George Clooney Hit By Floods

George Clooney and his family were caught in the devastating floods and mudslides that hit northern Italy Tuesday, as they vacationed in their picturesque Lake Como holiday home.  Clooney — who owns the 18th-century Villa Oleandra in idyllic Laglio — was photographed with Mayor Roberto Pozzi as he offered his support to locals amid the havoc.  More than 60 people have been rescued after Laglio and other towns surrounding Lake Como were swamped when extreme weather hit the country.  Tree trunks and rocks washed down a nearby mountainside and swept past the “Ocean’s Eleven” star’s home — but fortunately, Clooney, his wife Amal and their twins, 4, were unhurt and their property was not damaged, The Sun reported.  “It’s so much worse than anybody thinks. We were in Cernobbio and it was very bad, but here in Laglio it’s much worse,” Clooney told Italian media. “They think it could be years and millions of dollars before they fix it up.”

Animated Show About The Prince

HBO Max’s anticipated satirical animated comedy about the royal family, “The Prince,” has finally been released.  They dropped the first 12 episodes of the Gary Janetti created cartoon Thursday.  “The Prince” is a parodic twist about the imagined inner mechanics of the Firm through the lenses of an animated Prince George, who is the eldest son of Prince William and Kate Middleton. The youngster, 8, is third in the line of succession to the British crown.  The animated series features an all-star cast who lent their voices to characters living in Buckingham Palace.  Janetti, 55, stars in the series as the fictionalized George. Other stars who signed on as part of the voice cast include Orlando Bloom as Prince Harry, Alan Cumming as George’s butler Owen, Frances de la Tour as Queen Elizabeth, Lucy Punch as Kate Middleton, Condola Rashad as Meghan Markle, Iwan Rheon as Prince William, Dan Stevens as Prince Charles and Sophie Turner as Princess Charlotte.  Stevens will also be voicing Prince Phillip, who died in April at 99. The Duke of Edinburgh’s passing delayed the show’s premiere.

Marilyn Manson Wants Lawsuit Tossed

Marilyn Manson requested that a judge throw out Esmé Bianco’s sexual assault lawsuit against him.  Manson — born Brian Hugh Warner — called Bianco’s claims “untrue” and “meritless” and suggested they are “a key component of a coordinated attack” by women who want to “dishonestly seek to monetize and exploit the #MeToo movement,” per federal court documents.  He alleged that the “Game of Thrones” alum and other unnamed women “spent months plotting, workshopping and fine-tuning their stories to turn what were consensual friendships and relationships with [him] from more than a decade ago into twisted tales that bear no resemblance to reality.”  He then claimed that they are “desperately trying to conflate the imagery and artistry of [his] ‘shock rock’ stage persona, Marilyn Manson, with fabricated accounts of abuse.”  Manson argued that even if Bianco’s allegations were true, she is not within the seven-year statute of limitations from when the alleged incident took place.

Real Spongebob and Patrick Found

Marine scientists may have discovered the hidden location of SpongeBob SquarePants’ underwater Bikini Bottom home just 200 miles off the coast of New York.  Divers recently spotted a yellow sea sponge and a pink sea star — doppelgängers for SpongeBob and his doltish pal, Patrick Star — hanging out on a rock at the Retriever Seamount in the Atlantic Ocean.  National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) scientist Christopher Mah shared the news on Twitter: “I normally avoid these refs… but WOW. REAL LIFE SpongeBob and Patrick!”  A team of researchers from NOAA’s Okeanos Explorer ship found the aquatic allies — a Hertwigia sponge and Chondraster starfish — while surveying the seamount aboard remotely operated vehicles (ROVs).  See the pic HERE.

Wedding Dress Found On Highway

Tollway officials in Texas said they are trying to find the owner of an unusual piece of debris rescued from the side of a highway — a wedding dress.  The North Texas Tollway Authority said workers doing a cleanup project on the Dallas North Tollway in Frisco spotted a white box at the side of the road that contained the dress.  The tollway authority posted a photo of the white dress and train on Twitter in the hopes of finding the owner.  “This is not a Sally Field, Smokey and the Bandit deal, it didn’t go flying out of a vehicle per se. It’s boxed up. It’s clearly somebody’s memory somewhere along the way they lost track with it and we like to reunite them,” spokesman Michael Rey told KTVT-TV. Rey said documents inside the box indicate the dress was boxed more than 20 years ago, but the papers didn’t provide many other clues pointing at the identity of the owner.

Lottery Winner Had No Idea!

A German woman who won a lottery jackpot of about $39 million said she carried the ticket in her purse for nearly six weeks before discovering it was a winner.  She told officials she bought a ticket for the June 9 Lotto 6aus49 drawing and stowed it in her purse, forgetting to check it until she decided to play the lottery again nearly a month later.  The woman discovered she was the sole jackpot winner from the drawing, matching all seven numbers. She won a nearly $39 million jackpot.  “I still get dizzy at the thought that I carelessly carried almost [$39 million] around in my purse for several weeks,” the winner told lottery officials. Officials said the jackpot was the second highest in the 75-year history of Lotto Bayern.

Bull Moose Trapped In Parking Garage

Wildlife officials in Colorado said a large bull moose was tranquilized and relocated after wandering into the ground floor of a parking garage.  Colorado Parks and Wildlife said officers responded to the parking garage in the Lionshead Village area of Vail on Tuesday morning when the 2-to-3-year-old moose was spotted inside the garage.  Wildlife officials said the moose had been spotted frequently inside area parking garages during the preceding 10 days, likely drawn in by residual salt from de-icing agents used on the upper floors.  “He was pretty regularly coming into the parking structure first thing in the morning and then would kind of clear out before it got too busy,” wildlife officer Devin Duval said in the agency release. “This is the primary parking place for the folks accessing Lionshead Village as well as the Vail Health hospital.” Duval said the decision to relocate the moose came after officials determined it was becoming accustomed to the area and seemed unlikely to leave on its own.  See the video HERE.

Giant Sapphire Cluster Found

Authorities in Sri Lanka said workers in a man’s back yard made a stunning discovery — the world’s largest star sapphire cluster.  Local authorities in the Ratnapura area said the stone, known as the Serendipity Sapphire, was found by workers digging a well in the back yard of a man identified only by the surname Gamage.  “The person who was digging the well alerted us about some rare stones. Later, we stumbled upon this huge specimen,” Gamage told the BBC.  The cluster weighs in at about 1,124 pounds — or 2.5 million carats.  Gamage, a gem trader, said some stones that came loose from the cluster were tested and confirmed to be high-quality star sapphires.  Ratnapura translates to “city of gems” in Sinhalese. The city is known as the gem capital of Sri Lanka.  Experts said the cluster could be worth up to $100 million on the international market.

8 Lasting Changes Experts Think We’ll See In Kids After This ‘Lost’ Year

Huffington Post

Understanding Of Loss

With the current COVID-19 death toll at more than 4 million worldwide, countless children have been exposed to loss and grief during the pandemic. For many, this may have been their first experience with death.

“For the thousands who lost parents, grandparents and other loved ones, the loss is immeasurable, and grief and bereavement can take many forms,” said Dr. Ilisse Perlmutter, director of child and adolescent psychiatry at Talkiatry.

Even those who haven’t lost a loved one may have felt grief over lost experiences or opportunities. Parents should be prepared to help their children cope with grief and understand that it’s all part of the human experience.

“While it is easier said than done, it is best not to overthink the possible losses that children have experienced during the pandemic,” said Wight. “They have lived through a profoundly unique and powerful experience. They have gained skills as well as understanding during this time.”

Vulnerability To Mental Health Disorders

“Through the pandemic, there were significant increases in children and adolescents reporting anxiety and depressive symptoms, and this will likely continue trending upwards,” Tewari said.

The data doesn’t look great. A report from Save the Children found that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a “devastating” impact on American families’ and children’s emotional health.

“We will see on the negative side increased vulnerability to anxiety-based disorders such as eating disorders and pressure on children and adolescent mental health services,” said psychotherapist Noel McDermott. “Investment in mental well-being needs to increase and the whole needs of our kids considered.”

While many parents are anxious about their children catching up academically, McDermott believes kids have gained the perspective to recognize the other important issues in life ― which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

“We have a lot of choice about how to frame this for ourselves and for our kids,” he said. “Whilst we have seen an increase in anxiety disorders and depressive disorders during this time in kids, if we respond well to this with effective support, positive skills can be learned by kids about how to manage challenge and there can be improved resilience going forwards.”

Social Anxiety

“Many children may continue to struggle with social anxiety due to the isolation of the past 1.5 years, so gradual exposure to social situations and redeveloping social skills will be essential in helping them in reacclimating,” Tewari said.

Dr. Dyan Hes, founder of Gramercy Pediatrics, said she’s concerned about childhood development, particularly with the littlest of little ones, as the most rapid brain growth occurs from birth until age 3. Missing out on interactions with others may have fostered a sense of social isolation that will need to be overcome.

“These children have not seen many facial expressions behind masks, they have not learned to navigate the social skills needed to play with other toddlers or even the motor skills to run on a playground,” she explained. “As a pediatrician, I wholeheartedly encourage families to send their children to school, camp or day care. The benefits far outweigh the risks, unless their child has a medical condition that would make COVID life threatening. … We need our children to reemerge into society and we need all adults to be vaccinated for this to happen.”

Health Anxiety

All of the mania around sanitizing and disinfecting may also have a long-term impact on some children.

“There could be increases in illness anxiety disorder due to fears of catching the virus and having to maintain the strict hygiene protocols that have been necessary through the pandemic,” Tewari said.

“Most people’s nervous systems are dysregulated due to the pandemic’s threat to our safety and health, so it will take time for our brains and bodies to recover after the pandemic ends,” she added. “As a result, we may feel disoriented, and have a hard time believing that life can ever be ‘normal’ again.”

Anxiety around illness may also mean some children feel a fear or discomfort around going outside.

“I have noticed many kids who have never climbed up the playground ladder, learned how to ride a scooter or a bike,” Hes said. “These kids have been kept indoors for fear of COVID because they are too young to be vaccinated. I try to encourage parents to take kids out to get fresh air, run and play.”

Widening Inequality

Although we can’t yet fully know the extent of the pandemic’s lasting impact on children’s academic performance or development, there are certain trends that are already very clear.

“We do know that kids from already stressed and underresourced communities were more adversely affected during the pandemic,” said Dr. Helen Egger, a child psychiatrist and co-founder of Little Otter. “Widening inequality for children may be one of the worst impacts of the pandemic.”

From economic challenges to mental health struggles, many existing gaps between populations have worsened during the pandemic, and children are bearing much of the brunt.

“Children who were struggling before the pandemic may lag further behind,” Perlmutter said. “Youngsters who are homeless, have disabilities, subjected to racial violence are especially at risk.”

Positive Memories

The impact of the pandemic isn’t entirely terrible. Wight pointed out a silver lining of living through such “unprecedented times” unlike anything kids have experienced before.

“It’s important not to overlook that children will also have special or positive memories related back to the pandemic,” Wight said. “They might remember having more quality family time, a slower pace of life, FaceTiming with family members across the country and new hobbies they developed while at home.”

McDermott highlighted other positive aspects ― like spending more time with family and the refreshing old routines.

“The ‘interruption’ to the treadmill of school, university and jobs can also be viewed positively as it has allowed time to focus on important relationships in our lives,” he said.

Connection To Others

Although the pandemic brought social isolation, it also fostered a sense of global community. There’s also a universality to the experience, which creates common ground for children growing up with the trauma of COVID-19.

“As a global event, there is a shared experience for all the world’s children,” McDermott said. “As has been shown around issues such as climate change, kids are truly amazing at seeing their connections and joining together. Is this the global generation? Some of us hope so.”

He also emphasized the power of the internet in allowing children to connect to each other even amid their isolation.

“The hegemony of online experience has moved forward and we will see this generation more connected to that and connected to global voices and experiences,” McDermott said.

Resilience

“Despite the horror of this devastating year, understanding that in the face of trauma and this public health disaster we have the capacity for resilience has been comforting and grounding,” Perlmutter said. “Marking life events and celebrations in the usual ways was disappointing but not out of the question. Watching the grace and enthusiasm of high school seniors’ graduation ceremonies in living rooms, drive-by birthday celebrations, Zoom visits with grandparents, and bar and bat mitzvahs and confirmations on Zoom was humbling. It gives me hope.”

Throughout the pandemic, children have learned to cope with many unforeseen changes and challenges. While the experience wasn’t always positive, it fostered major growth and resilience.

Wight encouraged parents to keep this bright side in mind as we continue to work through the evolving situation.

“It is critical for parents to manage their own distress and worries, as it directly impacts their children’s well-being,” she said. “It is most helpful to focus on the resilience of children and to give them many opportunities to return to play and the work of being children.”
