Garth Brooks Hosting Drive-In Concert!

Garth Brooks announced on “Good Morning America” Thursday he will host a concert event at 300 drive-in theaters across America beginning June 27th.  Tickets go on sale on June 19 and will cost $100, which accounts for one passenger car or SUV. There will only be 250-300 tickets available per drive-in.  “I am so excited to get to play again,” the 58-year-old said in a statement. “This drive-in concert allows us all to get back to playing live music without the uncertainty of what would be the result to us as a community. This is old school, new school, and perfect for the time we are in.”  Encore Live, the production company behind Brooks’ event, has partnered with health experts to ensure safety protocol amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the outlet shared. This will include maintaining at least six feet of distance between vehicles, the use of personal protective equipment by employees, contactless payment and ticketing systems, as well as limited capacity in restrooms.  Due to social distancing guidelines mandated by health experts during the COVID-19 crisis that has impacted the country, drive-in theaters have become increasingly popular for both artists and fans.  “Families need safe entertainment options that they can enjoy together this summer,” Walter Kinzie, Encore Live’s founder and chief executive officer, told the outlet.
********And if the concert’s not that good, you can slip a Garth CD into the car stereo!!

Top Gun: Maverick Uses No CGI

Top Gun: Maverick” teased fans with a brief behind-the-scenes video showing the power of the movie’s use of real aerial effects rather than any CGI.  Both Tom Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have previously said that the movie will employ never-before-seen techniques to film practical aerial scenes rather than relying on CGI to do the visual work for them.  In a new video shared by Skydance captioned “No CGI here,” the crew films in the desert as a very low-flying jet skims over the tops of their heads. The nine-second teaser shows the crew reacting in slow motion as the plane blows their hair back, hurts their ears a bit and kicks up a fair amount of dust.  Speaking to Empire in January about his decision to return for the highly anticipated sequel to “Top Gun,” Cruise noted that he told the producer he was “not going to do the CGI stuff.”  “I said to the studio, ‘You don’t know how hard this movie’s going to be. No-one’s ever done this before,’” Cruise explained. “There’s never been an aerial sequence shot this way. I don’t know if there ever will be again, to be honest.”  See the clip HERE.

Jerry Seinfeld Explored Scientology

Jerry Seinfeld recently paid a visit to Marc Maron’s podcast “WTF,” where he addressed rumors that he once was a Scientologist.  According to Uproxx, rumors of Seinfeld belonging to the religion have surrounded him since the 1990s, when fellow comedian Bobcat Goldthwait accused him of participating in the religion.  While Seinfeld said he was never directly a member of the church, he did dabble in it decades ago.  “I did do a course in Scientology in like ’75,” he said. “I found it very interesting, never pursued it.”  Seinfeld noted that he appreciated the religion’s “emphasis on ethical behavior,” but found no interest in “avoiding negative people,” as Maron put it.  Nowadays, Seinfeld said that he celebrates the “big” holidays within the Jewish faith.

Barber Makes COVID Shield

A New Jersey barber preparing to reopen his shop invented a shield designed to keep salon workers and their customers safe amid the COVID-19 pandemic.  Edwin Ramirez, owner of 201 Stylez in Union City, said he is awaiting approval from the state before reopening his shop, but in the meantime he has been installing “Shields on Wheels” inside the business.  The invention is a movable plexiglass shield with a cutout large enough for barbers to fit their hands and tools through while cutting or styling a customer’s hair.  “I started putting pieces together, and I said, you know what this can be? The thing that’s essential for barbers,” Ramirez told WPVI-TV.  See the video HERE.

Woman Attacked Trying To Save Squirrel

A Texas woman attempting to rescue a squirrel from a backyard kiddie pool received a caught-on-camera fright when the animal jumped and climbed up her body.  The Lumberton woman who recorded the footage said she spotted the squirrel stranded in her granddaughter’s inflatable pool, so she summoned her daughter outside to assess the situation.  “Of course, being the animal lover she is, she had to attempt a rescue,” the filmer wrote.  The video shows the filmer warning the younger woman not to touch the squirrel, so the rescuer attempts to use a chair to scoop the small animal out of the water.  The squirrel initially dodges the chair, but finally gets scooped up. It appears that the squirrel is about to return to dry land, but it abruptly leaps off the chair and climbs up the woman’s body.  The woman panics and flees, and the squirrel falls back into the water.  See the video HERE.

Giant Python Found In Florida

A python hunter in Florida said he might have a new record on his hands after bagging a 17-foot snake that put up a fierce fight.  Martin County Trapping & Wildlife Rescue owner Mike Kimmel, known as the Python Cowboy, posted photos and videos to his Instagram showing his struggle with the python, and his injuries following the successful capture.  Kimmel said the snake left him bleeding from his arm.  “This ain’t good. I think she got an artery,” he said.  The hunter’s injury was treated and the Burmese python, captured on an Everglades spoil island in the Francis S. Taylor Wildlife Management Area, was humanely euthanized.  The snake, measuring more than 17 feet long and weighing about 150 pounds, might be a new record, Kimmel said. He said he is waiting to hear back from state officials.  See the video HERE.

Escaped Inmates Promise To Return

Two inmates who escaped from a prison in Rome last week left guards a courtesy note, saying they had business to take care of but would be back shortly, a newspaper reported Tuesday.  The two cousins, Davad Zukanovic, 40, and Lil Ahmetovic, 46, broke out of Rebibbia prison overnight on June 2 by scaling a wall using a water hose left in a courtyard.  But before they escaped, they left a note in their cell explaining they had personal reasons for needing to flee, said the Repubblica daily.  They were driven by “the need to protect their children from a nasty business they had got themselves into,” the daily said, paraphrasing the contents of the letter. The inmates specified that only they could make things right, as their wives were also both in jail.  At the end of the signed note, Zukanovic and Ahmetovic promised to return in about 15 days once everything was sorted, the paper said.
******In the U.S., we call that “prison reform!!”

A LIST FOR FRIDAY

How To Use All The Food In Your Refrigerator To Prevent Waste

Huffington Post

Choose A Theme Instead Of A Specific Recipe

When it comes to using up tidbits from your refrigerator, Clare Langan, a home-cooking expert who was a producer on the A&E cooking show “Scraps,” recommends loosely planning meals by theme instead of adhering to specific recipes.

“Each week, or a couple of times a week, roughly plan out your meals for the next few days based on what you have in the house,” Langan tells HuffPost. “Right now, especially, it’s unrealistic to assume you have everything in your house to whip up a specific recipe. I recommend opting for a looser approach: Meatless Mondays, Taco Tuesdays, Pasta Sundays. Putting a little intention behind how you plan and shop can be helpful if you have trouble deciding what to make and end up wasting food. Plus, theme nights make dinner feel a little more special.”

Adam Stevenson, executive chef of the Copperleaf Restaurant at Seattle’s Cedarbrook Lodge, seconds a taco theme as a great way to use up the odds and ends from your fridge. When we have tacos, we use lots of different vegetables as toppings, keeping them raw for the best nutrients and crunch,” he says. “Vegetables we like are kale, cabbage, carrots and radish. These, tossed with apple cider vinegar, olive oil and lemon, add that nice crunch to the taco.”

Incorporate Leftovers Into Your Meal Plan

When Stevenson is at home, he looks forward to eating leftovers, he says. “We look at this as an opportunity to make something else great. For instance, from a roasted or smoked chicken, we will pick the remaining meat and have tacos the next day. From the carcass, we make a wonderful stock. One that comes to mind is pho. It’s great paired with that leftover pork roast from a few nights ago. The same broth is fantastic for making soups or pasta dishes.”

Langan also loves cooking with leftover broth or stock, especially when cooking grains such as rice or quinoa or simmering dried or canned beans. “This is a great trick to make canned beans taste more like those from scratch,” she says.

Langan calls pizzas, vegetable soups, grain bowls, tacos, frittatas and grilled cheese sandwiches “use-it-up meals” and recommends using them as blank slates to fill up with all the leftovers and random items from your fridge.

Master The ‘Fridge Dive Frittata’

Langan suggests purging your fridge before you head to the store. “Once a week, before going to the grocery store, make a Fridge Dive Frittata. Cook any vegetable odds and ends in your fridge ― the remaining half of an onion, a handful of wilted spinach, the last of a bag of frozen peas ― in an oven-proof skillet. Add six to eight whisked eggs in a small to medium skillet and any other bits from your fridge. This is a great place for cheese and herbs. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for about 30 to 40 minutes until set. This is particularly good for brunch, but you can eat it any time of the day!”

Don’t Throw Away Your Stems

It pains Stevenson when you throw away the lesser parts of vegetables. “One way to get more out of your vegetables and preserve them is to use the entire vegetable,” he says. “One of my favorite things to eat are the stems and stalks of broccoli and romaine. These are wonderful pickled, roasted or simply sauteed. There is no reason to get rid of them ― this is where all the flavor and nutrients are.” Here are five delicious uses for broccoli stems.

Save Your Stale Bread

It may be tempting to throw away stale pieces of bread, but they can actually be frozen until you’re ready to put them to use.

Langan has some terrific tips for this. “Another catch-all dish is panzanella, also known as bread salad. Tear pieces of bread (fresh or stale) into bite-size pieces and toast lightly in the oven. Toss with your favorite vinaigrette and any odds and ends ― vegetables, cheese, herbs or cooked protein or beans. Tomatoes, basil and mozzarella are classic, but use what you have! I like doing a version with cucumber, dill, feta and red onion for a Greek vibe.” Click here for more panzanella salad recipes.

She also suggests blitzing leftover bread into crumbs and toasting them in a skillet with olive oil, garlic and herbs to make a crunchy topping for pasta, salads and soups.

Get Creative With Fruit And Berries

Anyone who has ever purchased a banana knows that some foods, especially fruits and berries, have a short shelf life.

A lot of vintage baking recipes were created as a way to use up fruit before it went bad, Langan says. “Crumbles, crisps, buckles and pandowdy are all great ways to use up berries, stone fruit, apples and pears. You can also simmer about-to-turn fruit with a bit of sweetener like sugar, honey or maple syrup in a saucepan until thickened for a quick compote to top ice cream, cakes, yogurt or oatmeal.”  If you’re freezing fruit to use later in smoothies or other recipes, Langan says to cut the fruit into 2-inch pieces, place on a parchment or waxed paper-lined sheet tray and freeze until solid. Then transfer the fruit to an airtight container or zip-top bag. “Freezing the fruit this way allows it to become like little ice cubes rather than freezing into one big clump,” she says. She also suggests peeling bananas first, since it can be difficult to remove the skins once they’re frozen.

You shouldn’t neglect ripening avocados, Stevenson says. “These turn ripe so fast, especially during hot days,” he says. “Get them into your salads. If they’re too soft, make a mayonnaise or a green goddess dressing.” These green goddess recipes will remind you of its greatness.

Learning how to use all the odds and ends in your kitchen will save you money, and the results are nothing short of delicious.
