Alex Trebek’s Widow Thanks For Support

Jean Trebek is grateful for the support in the wake of her husband’s death.  Alex died Sunday after battling pancreatic cancer. She posted their wedding photo on Instagram and a message to her followers.  “My family and I sincerely thank you all for your compassionate messages and generosity,” she wrote. “Your expressions have truly touched our hearts. Thank you so very, very much.  They married in 1990 and had two children.  She told People magazine in 2019 that they began their relationship as friends.  “There was just this deep sensitivity about him with a gruffy exterior,” she said of her husband. “I kept thinking, he’s 24 years older than me … but there was something that just kept drawing me to him.”  Their love affair lasted for decades, and in 2019 the “Jeopardy!” host sang his wife’s praises to People.  “I’m pretty satisfied with my life,” he said. “But my wife Jean and I have been together almost 29 years, and I was thinking about President Bush when he died, and all the comments about his life about what a nice guy he is, and how he and his wife had been together 73 years. I thought, oh my gosh … if I’d just met Jean in my 20s we could have had a longer life together.”

Ellen Selling “Be Kind” Gift Boxes

Ellen DeGeneres released a new “Be Kind” subscription box valued at $270 just in time for the holiday season. DeGeneres said her box is “all about spreading kindness and highlights brands that do the same.” Among the items in the box are Wander Beauty eye masks and a BYCHARI “HOPE” necklace.  Because DeGeneres is being kind to her devoted fans, she’s temporarily offering the box for $54.99 plus an additional $15 off with a special code. If you’re one of DeGeneres’ celebrity pals, such as Kris Jenner, you’re receiving the box for free.  She aired an unboxing of DeGeneres’ gift on her Instagram Story, where she documented all of the goodies included in the package.  “So excited to get my new ‘Be Kind box by Ellen,’” Jenner narrated. “This is so great.”  She also noted the box included a “fabulous” picture of DeGeneres.  She has been revamping her show in light of the toxic workplace scandal that rocked her all summer long. Upon her return, DeGeneres recited an apology monologue and vowed she’s the “person that you see on TV.”

Meghan’s Half Sister Speaks Out

Meghan Markle’s half sister, Samantha Markle, has criticized the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s Remembrance Day photos.  Speaking with Dan Wootton on the UK’s talkRadio, Samantha Markle described her sister’s tribute to fallen soldiers at a California cemetery on Sunday as an “exploitative photo opportunity.”  Meghan and Prince Harry’s private visit to the gravesites of two Commonwealth soldiers at the Los Angeles National Cemetery was photographed by a preapproved photographer, Lee Morgan, on Remembrance Sunday.  “Well, don’t get me started on the concept of photo scandals, because allegedly that was the reason she disowned our father,” Samantha said, alluding to Thomas Markle’s staged paparazzi photos ahead of Meghan and Harry’s wedding in 2018, which he ultimately did not attend.   Samantha Markle also spoke about the couple’s son, Archie Harrison, saying she didn’t know whether she’d ever get to meet him.  “Archie has become somewhat of a phantom in the eyes of everybody, because he must be walking now and he wasn’t present at the memorial,” she said. “I think the world hopes for the best for him, but I can’t address it now because we haven’t seen him and I don’t know that we will sadly.”

Kate Beckinsale Sailing Solo After Goody Grace Goodbye-(National Enquirer)

Beck on the market!  “Pearl Harbor” stunner Kate Beckinsale, 47, has split from singer Goody Grace, 23, after nine months.  He moved into her L.A. home for lockdown, but he’s returned to his native Canada.  The actress has unfollowed him on Instagram and deleted images celebrating his June birthday.

Fallon Goes Soft On Wilting Lily-(Globe)

After getting caught on a shameful romantic rendezvous in Rome with married actor Dominic West, red-faced Brit beauty Lily James (of “Cinderella/Downton Abbey” fame) couldn’t face the music-and canceled a slew of interviews to plug her new Netflix flick, “Rebecca.”  Several days later, the disgraced actress finally came out of hiding for a virtual “Tonight Show” spot-where jolly Jimmy Fallon pitched his scandal-ridden guest such softball queries as, “You taught a Broadway Zoom class, what was that like?” and “Have you ever had any experience with ghosts?”  Seriously?!

Eva & Ryan:  Baby Talk-(Us Weekly)

Eva Mendes admits there was a time she thought motherhood wasn’t for her.  “I never wanted babies until I fell in love with Ryan [Gosling],” the actress, 46, said in a recent interview.  Today, she and the actor, 39, couldn’t be happier raising daughters Esmeralda, 6, and Amada, 4.  “They’re hands-on parents,” an insider says, noting that the duo of nine years like to “live a normal low-key life.”

Reese & Jim:  Marriage On the Brink?-(Star)

Rocked by the failure of her husband’s much-hyped venture, Reese Witherspoon questions their bond.  It was a risk.  But when Reese Witherspoon’s husband Jim Toth quit his job as a top-ranked agent a CAA to helm the new streaming service Quibi, he assured his famous wife that it was a risk worth taking.  As it turns out, he lost millions.  If Reese is contemplating divorce, she may want to file before the couple’s 10-year anniversary next March.  In California, a 10-year marriage is officially considered “of long duration,” explains legal expert Goldie Schon, which means the court could retain jurisdiction over alimony indefinitely.  For couples who split before hitting 10 years, “the judge has the authority to cut off alimony at the half-life of the marriage,” says Schon.  “It’s why a lot of celebrities divorce right before the 10-year mark.”

Meghan Slams Door On New Neighbor Katy!-(Life & Style)

Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom recently purchased a $14 million mansion in Montecito, Calif., not far from where Meghan Markle lives with husband Prince Harry and their 18-month-old son, Archie.  But while having the royals for neighbors certainly sounds like a perk, the former actress, 38, seemingly won’t be lending the pop star, 36, a cup of sugar anytime soon.  “Meghan has no interest in getting to know Katy whatsoever,” a source says.  The trouble began in 2018 when the “California Gurls” singer gave an interview, criticizing the Suits star’s wedding dress.  “I would have done one more fitting,” Katy said.

Johnny Depp Loses in Court over Abuse Claim-(People)

After an explosive courtroom battle, Johnny Depp has lost his libel lawsuit over a 2018 story that described him as a “wife beater” during his marriage to Amber Heard.  On Nov. 2 a London judge ruled that the article in the U.K.’s Sun newspaper was “substantially true,” citing 14 incidents of alleged violence against Heard that came to light during the trial in July.  “Domestic abuse victims must never be silenced,” said a spokesperson, while Depp’s lawyer called the decision “flawed” and “bewildering,” adding Depp plans to appeal.  The Pirates of the Caribbean star, 57, and the Aquaman actress, 34, married in 2015.  Heard accused him of domestic abuse in 2016; Depp denied the claims, and they settled their divorce in 2017.  Depp’s $50 million U.S. defamation suit against Heard is ongoing.

Invading Bear Captured

Wildlife officials in California said they have captured and relocated a black bear that became famous online for its repeated visits to a gas station convenience store.  The California Department of Fish and Wildlife said the bear, which became a viral celebrity after security cameras recorded it pilfering snacks from inside the Chevron gas station in Kings Beach on multiple occasions, was safely captured and revealed to be a 16-year-old male.  Officials said the bear has been relocated to “a large expanse of wild, suitable bear habitat.”  Anne Bryant with the BEAR League said she is concerned the bear’s relocation could put its life at risk due to a leg injury from a broken bone that did not heal correctly.

Statue Gets Bad Makeover

A carved figure in the facade of a Spanish building is going viral on social media after an apparent botched restoration left the figure’s face unrecognizable.  The carving, which adorns an early 20th century building in Palencia, formerly featured a woman smiling next to some livestock, but a recent restoration effort left the woman’s face severely deformed.  The result of the restoration has drawn comparisons to the botched “Monkey Christ” fresco restoration in the town of Borja, as well as comparisons to the faces of a Tusken Raider from Star Wars and U.S. President Donald Trump.  Before and after photos of the restoration went viral after being shared on Facebook by artist Antonio Guzman Capel.  “It looks like the head of a cartoon character,” Capel wrote.  Spain’s Professional Association of Restorers and Conservators sharply criticized the restoration on Twitter.  “THIS #IsNotARestoration,” the group tweeted. “It’s NOT a professional intervention.”  See the video HERE.

Cow Escapes After Accident

A cow escaped from a cattle trailer on a California highway when it was sideswiped and ripped open by a second tractor-trailer, authorities said.  The California Highway Patrol said the tractor-trailer hauling a load of cattle was side-swiped by another truck Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 80, just east of Highway 65, causing the trailer to tear open.  One of the cattle — variously reported as a bull or a cow — escaped from the hole in the trailer.  A CHP vehicle blocked the hole in the trailer to prevent further cattle escapes.  No injuries were reported from the crash, but the roadway was partially closed while authorities worked to clean up from the crash and search for the missing bovine.  See the video HERE.

Alligator Visits Front Porch

A South Carolina woman whose dogs made a ruckus at her front door looked outside to discover an unusual visitor on the porch — an alligator.  Robyn Schnessel said she was working from her home office in the Grand Oaks Plantation area of Charleston when her dogs, Savannah the great Pyrenees and Bruce the Saint Pyrenees, started barking enthusiastically at her front door.  Schnessel said she looked outside and was shocked to see an alligator at her front door. She said doorbell camera footage showed her the reptile had been there for some time.  “He was on camera for almost 20 minutes before the dog saw him,” Schnessel told WCBD-TV. “I froze, honestly, and then freaked out.”  Schnessel called the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, but she decided not to request a trapper when she was told that the alligator would be killed.  She said she decided to just wait, and eventually the gator left on its own after more than an hour on her porch.  See the video HERE.

17 Surprising Items You Should Clean In The Dishwasher (That Aren’t Dishes)

Huffington Post

  1. Children’s toys

From plastic blocks to bath toys, it’s a good idea to sanitize your kids’ playthings regularly. “Think about all the places your kid’s toys have been: in their mouth, on the floor, in the garden,” said Joanne Archer, an editor at Expert Home Tips. “As long as they don’t have any electrical components or places where water might get stuck, pop those plastic toys in the dishwasher.”

  1. Toothbrushes, holders and soap dishes

Toothbrushes accumulate bacteria, while other bathroom accessories such as toothbrush holders and soap dishes can end up riddled with soap scum and mold. “Luckily, they’re typically made of plastic, porcelain or ceramic, so it’s safe to blast the grime away in the dishwasher,” Archer said.

  1. Nail clippers and tools

Dead skin cells build up on your nail clippers, files and other manicure and pedicure tools, making your personal grooming kit less than sanitary. Archer suggested putting your tools in the cutlery basket, and they’ll be good as new.

  1. Dog bowls, toys, leashes and collars

The dishwasher isn’t just for human dishes. If you have dogs (or any other pets, for that matter), you should be cleaning their bowls regularly. “Most pet owners don’t know that they can be the fourth germiest item in your home,” said Matt Clayton, founder and chief editor at Pet Hair Patrol. “A quick daily rinse with soap and water is often enough, but it’s even better if you can use your dishwasher for that purpose. Washing the bowl thoroughly in the dishwasher will remove any nasty bacteria like E. coli, MRSA, listeria and salmonella ― even mold and yeast.”

In addition to their bowls, you can also clean your pet’s rubber and plastic toys, as well as nonleather leashes and collars in the dishwasher. Just be sure to wash these items separately from your own dishes to prevent cross-contamination with bacteria from Fido’s mouth.

  1. Pacifiers and teething rings

You want to keep your little ones healthy, which means sanitizing their pacifiers, teethers and anything else that goes in their mouths regularly. “Bacteria die in high temperatures, but neither can the tap provide such heat, nor will your hands be able to withstand it,” Fink said. “Your baby’s paraphernalia will get better cleaning in the dishwasher where the water can also come in contact with the various hard-to-reach places.”

  1. Keys

Just think about all the grime and germs your keys probably collect throughout the day ― not to mention how often you touch them. The dishwasher is great for sanitizing keys (plain metal ones, not electronic key fobs), according to Fink. “Don’t be afraid of rust since most keys are made of brass, which means that they will not suffer any corrosion,” he said.

  1. Humidifier parts

Humidifiers need regular maintenance and cleaning to remove the scale and mold that builds up inside the water tank and around the components, according to Albert Lee, founder of Home Living Lab. “The conventional way is to soak these components and water tanks in white vinegar or hot water before scrubbing them away. It is time-consuming, takes a lot of effort and just inefficient in general,” he said.

Fortunately, some humidifier manufacturers have made their parts and water tank dishwasher-safe to save time and energy cleaning them. Run these parts through a routine wash to rid them of any mold or gunk that has built up. “The hot cycle would also neutralize any bacteria or viruses that may be lurking inside the humidifier,” Lee said. Just keep in mind that not all humidifiers are dishwasher safe, so read the user manual first.

  1. Baseball caps

One household item that can be cleaned very effectively in the dishwasher is hats, said Mindy Jones, a home and parenting blogger. “You can toss in your hats for a quick refresh, or an intense cleaning for those muddy kids sports hats.”

Place them in the top rack by themselves without any other dishes and hook the back strap to one of the pegs. You should use only a tiny amount of dish detergent or non-bleach cleaner such as Borax. Depending on the soil level, you can do a normal to heavy wash. “Let them air-dry and you have a fresh, new looking (and smelling) hat,” Jones said.

  1. Fridge shelves and bins

“Something I have been doing for a long while, but was surprised to hear that almost no one else was doing, was putting fridge shelves and bins in the dishwasher,” said Karen Lee, editor and researcher at Things Around the House.

The shelves and bins in your fridge can easily come out and the dishwasher can give them a deep clean. The glass shelves, plastic bins on the door and vegetable crispers can usually all fit into the dishwasher in one load, though you may need to remove the top rack to make room. “After I start the dishwasher, I then give the rest of my fridge a good scrubbing,” Lee said.

  1. Trash cans

Over time, trash cans collect germs, grime and an unpleasant smell that’s difficult to get rid of. Thankfully, the dishwasher can help. “If your trash bins and cans are plastic or metal and they fit in the dishwasher, place them on the lower rack facing downwards,” said Natalie Barrett, service quality supervisor at Nifty Cleaning Services based in Sydney, Australia. For larger bins that don’t fit, you can still clean their germy lids in the dishwasher.

  1. Silicone oven mitts

Oven mitts get a lot of use in the kitchen, which means they collect all types of filth and leftover food. Barrett said the dishwasher is great for getting silicone oven mitts sparkling clean again: “All you have to do is leave them on the top rack and let the magic happen.”

  1. Showerheads

There are few things as frustrating as trying to clean clogged shower heads. Rather than wasting your time, Barrett suggested unscrewing the shower head and placing it on the top rack of your dishwasher, then running a regular cycle that you would normally use to wash your pots and pans. “There’s no problem to mix showerheads with other dishes as well,” she noted.

  1. Shoes

Shoes in the dishwasher? As long as they’re the only item being cleaned, the dishwasher is a great method for killing the dirt and bacteria lurking in rubber boots, Crocs and flip flops. “Simply place them on the upper shelf facing downwards to ensure that they remain protected and the water is safely removed from them during the washing,” Barrett said.

  1. Hair brushes and accessories

Considering that combs and brushes regularly touch our heads, Fink said it’s a good idea to put them through the most effective cleaning method: a dishwasher cycle. Strip as much hair from the brush as possible, then place it in the silverware holder. If it’s made of plastic, you can place it in top rack to be safe. Don’t put anything with a wood handle in the dishwasher, however, as the hot water will damage it.

You can clean other hair accessories such as barrettes, headbands and hair ties in the dishwasher as well, as long as they’re made of dishwasher-safe materials. Keep them secure in the utensil holder or another container.

  1. Microwave turntables

Between bubbling leftovers and the occasional spill, your microwave can get pretty grimy. But at least you don’t need to spend time washing its glass turntable by hand. “Normally, these glass plates are durable enough to be put on the bottom rack of the dishwasher,” Fink said. Go ahead and clean the turntable along with a regular load of dishes.

  1. Home decor

Plenty of decor items in your home, such as vases and desk accessories, can go into the dishwasher too. “They gather dust easily, and a regular cycle can give them a good cleaning by removing the dust and any sticky grime,” said David Cusick, chief strategy officer for House Method. Again, stick to plain plastic, glass and metal, and avoid anything that’s delicate or could be harmed by the high heat and harsh detergents.

  1. Fans

Your fans recycle the air around you, collecting dirt and bacteria. You can place any removable, plastic parts of your fans in the dishwasher, according to Owen Mosser, a home repair expert and editor at The Golden. Just be sure not to put any electrical items in the dishwasher, as they will get damaged.
