Prince Estate Wins Trademark Lawsuit

A panel of judges in the US Patent and Trademark Office has ruled in favor of Prince’s estate in energy drink company Bang’s attempt to trademark the phrase “Purple Rain” for a line of energy drinks. Bang’s attempt to trademark the term began in 2020.  The energy drink company is known for its TikTok and YouTube collaborations, with the hashtag #BangEnergy boasting 18 billion views on TikTok. At the height of its popularity, Bang was called the energy drink of internet stars, with users on TikTok and YouTube ranking the wide range of flavors.  But the company’s attempts to trademark “Purple Rain” for a flavor of energy drinks and dietary supplements were denied. The trademark was rejected at the August 23 Trademark Trial and Appeal Board ruling because “Purple Rain” is still widely associated with Prince.

Jeff Garlin Is Getting “Killed Off” The Goldbergs

The Goldbergs” are killing off comedian Jeff Garlin’s character following on-set misconduct allegations and his departure from the show.  The co-showrunners, Chris Bishop and Alex Barnow, confirmed the news in a recent interview. “This is going to be a family that has not reconciled the fact that their father’s gone but has sort of moved on and has dealt with a lot of that,” Barnow told with Entertainment Weekly of Garlin’s characters departure.  Garlin left the hit sitcom in December after he was accused of misconduct.  Bishop and Barnow said his character will have been dead for “multiple months” when the 10th season airs on September 21. They shared that Murray Goldberg’s family members will have already grieved his death when the season kicks off.  “I’ve had a conversation with Jeff, and he’s aware that he’s not being replaced. The truth is, I don’t know if he knows what his fate is, but I’m assuming he knows, would be the answer to that question,” Barnow told the outlet.  In December, Garlin defended himself from being canceled over allegations that he creates an unsafe working environment on-set.  “No, I was not fired from ‘The Goldbergs,’” he told a Vanity Fair reporter. “I have not been fired from ‘The Goldbergs.’”  “It’s always the same thing. It’s about me and my silliness on set. They don’t think it’s appropriate. I do. That’s where we’re at. I’ve not been fired because of it. We just think differently,” he explained.

Leonardo DiCaprio Already Looking For New Model!

It looks like Leonardo DiCaprio is chasing another young one following his split from model Camila Morrone this week.  He kept a low profile as he arrived at NYC’s exclusive nightclub The Ned NoMad Tuesday night for some mid-week fun.  He partied with a “squad” of models, including some 21 and 23-year-olds.  He was dressed in all black as he arrived at Manhattan’s members-only club owned by nightlife mogul Richie Akiva.  He was spotted making a quick entrance with a few pals just days after news of his split came to light.  Sources say that DiCaprio has been partying every night while his now-ex-girlfriend has been on vacation in St. Tropez with her mom.
****Here’s the problem: when he hooks up with a 21-year-old, she still has the “new car smell!!!”

Princess Diana Would Not Have Liked Meghan

Princess Diana would not have been “a great fan” of Meghan Markle, according to one of her former friends.  Tina Brown, author of both The Diana Chronicles and The Palace Papers, told the Daily Beast that while Diana would have been “thrilled” her son, Prince Harry, had met someone who made him happy, she doesn’t think she would be pleased with the direction his life has taken.  “I don’t think Diana would have been the great fan of Meghan that Meghan herself might perhaps imagine,” Brown said. She added Diana would have seen Meghan as someone “steering Harry in a direction that was not good”.  Brown has previously been vocal about the effect Harry and Meghan’s decision to permanently quit royal duties has had.  “Harry has become a disruptive force in the [royal] family. For them, it’s like Diana’s son is continuing the campaign to disrupt Charles’ future reign, and the ‘War of the Wales’ continues. It’s a very destabilising factor,” she told Marie Claire while promoting one of her books.  “Meghan got angry so fast, and that’s what’s rocked the family. They’re still reeling and just baffled why it seemed to go wrong so quickly.”
********It’s almost like she had a plan!!! But… that couldn’t be right, could it???

Anne Heche Had No Will

Anne Heche’s older son has filed for control of her estate.  Homer Laffoon filed paperwork asking that he be awarded control of Heche’s assets in light of the fact his mother had not written a will before her death at age 53 earlier this month.  The paperwork mentions both Homer and Heche’s other son, Atlas Tupper, 13, as rightful heirs to Heche’s estate.  “The Estate consists of two (2) intestate heirs—Homer Heche Laffoon and Atlas Heche Tupper,” the papers say. “Homer Heche Laffoon is an adult and the proposed Administrator. Atlas Heche Tupper is a minor.” She was declared legally dead by the state of California on Aug. 12, despite remaining on life support in order to donate her organs. On Aug. 14, the actress’s rep confirmed she had been taken off of life support.  Heche’s death certificate confirmed that she’ll be buried at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles.

STUPID NEWS

Unusual Smell Delays Flight

An “unusual smell” that prompted five fire trucks to respond to a plane at a North Carolina airport turned out to be a bottle of nail polish, officials said.  American Airlines Flight 563 arrived at Charlotte Douglas International Airport from Philadelphia at 7:50 a.m. Wednesday, and an airline representative said passengers were off-boarded as normal.  The spokesperson told Queen City News the ground crew members opened the luggage compartment about 8:15 a.m. and immediately noticed an “unusual smell.”  The Charlotte Fire Department dispatched five trucks to investigate the odor. “Firefighters arrived, checked out the hold and discovered one of the containers inside the hold contained a bottle of nail polish that had broken,” the spokesperson said. “The smell was from the broken bottle of polish. No one was injured, and the plane is back in service.”
*********Tragically, one of the passengers was stuck with unpolished nails!! She plans to sue!!

Alfredo Highway

A stretch of highway near downtown Memphis, Tenn., was closed for hours after a truck hit a retaining wall and spilled its load of alfredo sauce across the roadway.  Memphis police said the truck crashed into a retaining wall about 4:43 p.m. Tuesday in the southbound lanes of Interstate 55, near McLemore Avenue, and spilled its load of alfredo sauce.  Images from the scene show broken jars of Bertolli alfredo sauce scattered around the roadway.  All southbound lanes were closed for clean-up and northbound traffic was reduced to one lane when some of the sauce spilled into the other side of the highway.

Crypto Company Makes Huge Mistake

Crypto.com accidentally transferred $10.5 million AUD (~$7.2 million USD) to an Australian customer instead of issuing a standard $100 AUD (~$68 USD) due to a pretty unfortunate typo. According to Australian news outlet 7News, the exchange didn’t even notice the error until seven months later, and by that time, a portion of the money was already gone.  The initial transfer occurred in May 2021 after an employee accidentally typed an account number in the payment amount field. Crypto.com only realized the mistake when conducting an audit in December 2021.  Instead of reporting the incorrect refund to Crypto.com, the customer, Thevamanogari Manivel, reportedly transferred the cash to a joint account and spent $1.3 million AUD (~$890,526 USD) on a luxurious, five-bedroom home for her sister. Now the company’s fighting to get its cash back with a lawsuit filed in the Victoria Supreme Court. As noted by The Guardian, Crypto.com successfully put a freeze on Manivel’s account in February. The court has also ordered Manivel to sell the home and return the money (with interest) to the exchange. The case will resume in court this October, and Crypto.com declined to comment on the situation.

Ketchup Stained Clothes For Sale

Heinz has partnered with a thrift store to sell ketchup-stained clothes online.  It’s called the “Heinz Vintage Drip” collection, and there are “157 secondhand pieces, each with a unique Heinz ketchup stain.” And it IS ketchup … so it will fade away over time.  They’re even using the tag-line:  “Because when it’s Heinz, it’s not a stain, it’s a statement.”  In addition to all the clothes being used, they were picked to be “inclusive” with sizes ranging from extra-extra-small to extra-extra-large, for both men and women.  They also range from cheap T-shirts to designer labels.  The stained clothes are available to buy online in the U.S. and Canada, exclusively on ThredUP.com/HEINZ through two “drops.  100% of the proceeds from this collaboration will go to Rise Against Hunger in support of global hunger relief.

How To Make Your Weekends Feel Longer

HUFFINGTON POST

Plan out some of your time.

“You can make the most out of your weekend by planning to do activities that you enjoy,” said Alayna L. Park, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Oregon.

She noted that creating a specific schedule for your weekend can help you follow through with the activities you want to do. This way, you don’t go into Sunday night feeling disappointed with the activities you did (or didn’t do).

Think about it: You’re much more likely to go on that long bike ride if you rent a bike in advance or coordinate a ride with a friend. And while planning things out may not physically make your weekend longer, having set things to do (that you’re looking forward to) can make you feel like you’ve maximized your time.

And, there’s another bonus of making plans ahead of time: “Making enjoyable plans in advance can also give you something to look forward to during a hectic workweek,” Park said.

Curb your screen use and find a hobby.

It’s pretty common to feel like time flies when you sit down to watch an hour-long show or scroll Instagram. Studies show that people who spend a lot of time on social media can experience a distorted sense of time, often wondering how it passed so quickly.

Looking at social media or watching TV over the weekend is OK, of course, but you should try to limit it. According to Sevilla, taking a break from watching TV or scrolling social media is a good way to reconnect with things that make you happy on your days off.

“Consider returning to a previous hobby that you were doing before the pandemic, such as walking or reading,” Sevilla said. “Or, better yet, challenge yourself to try out something new.”

Do activities that are different from your day-to-day work.

“Engage in activities that draw on a completely different set of resources than your work,” Dumas said.

In other words, if your 9-to-5 job is highly technical, spend the weekend doing an activity that builds on different skills, she advised. This could mean playing a musical instrument or trying out kickball.

On the other hand, if you work in the arts industry, you may want to stay away from activities like writing or creating on your days off and try something completely different. This way, you won’t be reminded of work when you’re trying to enjoy your weekend.

Put work away.

Let work be something that takes place on the weekdays, not your time off.  According to Sevilla, furthering the distance between you and work during the weekend is important. Worrying about work wastes those valuable weekend minutes that could be spent with friends or family. “Keeping work out of sight and out of mind can help make the weekend feel a little longer,” Sevilla said.

This can mean turning off your work phone, disabling your work email and even putting your work laptop away so you aren’t reminded of a looming deadline while you cuddle up on the couch.  According to Dumas, “rest is important, but staying on the couch or in bed all weekend isn’t as helpful.” If you spend too much time resting all weekend, time truly will fly by —when’s the last time you laid down for a quick nap and woke up two hours later?  You’ll feel at your peak when you combine that much-needed rest with an activity that you find enjoyable or stimulating, Dumas explained. Specifically, engaging in mastery activities, in which you learn something new, will help you gain more energy.

What’s more, if you find these activities enriching, you’ll head into work on Monday with that energy and in a better mood because of your great experience over the weekend, Dumas said.

Stay in the moment.

It may be easier said than done, but if you stay in the moment during your treasured days off, you’ll have a more enjoyable weekend. In fact, studies show that some people who practice ongoing mindfulness and meditation experience time at a slower rate.

If your mind starts wandering to an email you sent last week or to an upcoming meeting, Park suggested that you ground yourself in the present moment.

“You can ground yourself anywhere and anytime using your senses,” she said. To do so, start by naming five things that you can see, four things that you can touch, three things that you can hear, two things that you can smell and one thing that you can taste, she said.  “Once you are back in the present moment, then you can intentionally move forward with things that bring you a sense of joy,” Park said.

And who doesn’t want to experience a sense of joy all throughout a slow-moving weekend?
