Queen Elizabeth II Dies
Queen Elizabeth II, the UK’s longest-serving monarch, has died at Balmoral aged 96, after reigning for 70 years. Her family gathered at her Scottish estate after concerns grew about her health earlier on Thursday. The Queen came to the throne in 1952 and witnessed enormous social change. With her death, her eldest son Charles, the former Prince of Wales, will lead the country in mourning as the new King and head of state for 14 Commonwealth realms. In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: “The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. “The King and the Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow.”

Dancing With The Stars Cast Revealed
ABC revealed the full cast of contestants for season 31 of Dancing With the Stars. The cast includes The Real Housewives of New Jersey star Teresa Giudice with partner Pasha Pashkov, actor and comedian Wayne Brady with partner Witney Carson, actress Selma Blair with partner Sasha Farber, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s son and fitness model Joseph Baena with partner Daniella Karagach, and Jersey Shore star Vinny Guadagnino with partner Koko Iwasaki. Also joining the cast is Coda star Daniel Durant with partner Britt Stewart, country singer Jessie James Decker with partner Alan Bersten, recent Bachelorette lead Gabby Windey with partner Val Chmerkovskiy and singer Jordin Sparks with partner Brandon Armstrong. Olivia Wilde is finally reacting to rumors that she left Jason Sudeikis for Harry Styles. “The complete horses–t idea that I left Jason for Harry is completely inaccurate,” she told Vanity Fair in her October cover story, published on Thursday. “Our relationship was over long before I met Harry,” Wilde continued. “Like any relationship that ends, it doesn’t end overnight.” She explained that she and the “Ted Lasso” star experienced a “very bumpy road” before officially dissolving their relationship “towards the beginning of the pandemic.” The former pair, who got engaged in 2013, co-parented their two kids during lockdown until they realized the dynamic “was no longer beneficial” for son Otis, 8, and daughter Daisy, 5. “We could be better parents as friends who live in different houses,” Wilde told the publication, bashing the “false narratives and drama” surrounding their breakup since news broke in November 2020. “Haven’t the kids been through enough?” she asked.

Ricky Martin Suing His Nephew
Ricky Martin is suing his nephew after he accused him of sexual abuse. In court documents obtained by NBC News on Sept. 7, the singer claims Dennis Yadiel Sánchez Martin, who he confirms is his nephew and “of legal age,” “persecuted, besieged, harassed, stalked and extorted” him in an effort to “assassinate” his reputation. In July, a restraining order was filed against Martin. At the time, NBC News confirmed that the person who filed the restraining order was the son of Martin’s half sister. The nephew alleged that he and Martin had had a sexual and romantic relationship that lasted for seven months, according to a court document obtained by Telemundo and shared with NBC News. He denied all allegations against him. During a hearing in Puerto Rico on July 21, a judge declined to extend a temporary order of protection against the singer after the nephew withdrew his case against Martin. In a statement obtained by TODAY following the hearing, Martin’s lawyers said they “had anticipated” that the temporary protection order would not be extended.

Netflix Settles Queen’s Gambit Lawsuit
Netflix has settled a lawsuit brought by a real chess champion over a “sexist and belittling” line about her in The Queen’s Gambit. Court papers showed the streamer settled the $5 million defamation lawsuit, which was brought by chess champion Nona Gaprindashvili, according to The New York Times. Terms of the settlement weren’t disclosed. Gaprindashvili sued Netflix last year over a reference to her in the miniseries The Queen’s Gambit, which revolves around a fictional female chess prodigy. A climatic scene depicts the main character, played by Anya Taylor-Joy, competing in a chess tournament, where the announcer says, “The only unusual thing about her, really, is her sex, and even that’s not unique in Russia. There’s Nona Gaprindashvili, but she’s the female world champion and has never faced men.” In reality, Gaprindashvili had faced men by the time the series took place. In the lawsuit, she described this as a “devastating falsehood, undermining and degrading her accomplishments before an audience of many millions.” Gaprindashvili also accused the streamer of “brazenly and deliberately” lying about her for the “cheap and cynical purpose of ‘heightening the drama.'” A judge in January rejected Netflix’s attempt to have the lawsuit dismissed after the streamer argued it was protected under the First Amendment, Variety reports.

Angelina Jolie Countersues Brad Pitt
Angelina Jolie is firing back with her own countersuit against ex Brad Pitt over the wine business they previously co-owned together. Jolie’s business Nouvel is seeking more than $250 million in damages, accusing Pitt of “waging a vindictive war against” Jolie ever since she filed for divorce back in 2016. “These counterclaims lay bare the true nature of Pitt’s egregious misconduct. To be clear, it is Pitt, and not Jolie, Nouvel or any of the other Defendants, who has acted in a hostile, destructive, and illegal manner. Pitt’s behavior has caused serious harm to Nouvel,” reads the documents, obtained by PEOPLE. The attorneys claim Pitt “masterminded a so-far-successful plan to seize control of” Château Miraval, the South of France vineyard and home that, back in 2008, the pair, who share six kids, bought a controlling stake in. They allege Pitt has now “frozen Nouvel out of Château Miraval and treats it as his personal fiefdom” and has “wasted its assets, spending millions on vanity projects, including more than $1 million on swimming pool renovations and other funds restoring a recording studio.”

Rainbow Highway
A stretch of highway in South Carolina was temporarily colored pink when clothing dye spilled from the back of a trailer involved in a crash. Spartanburg County Emergency Management said the trailer carrying clothing dye was involved in a crash Tuesday on Interstate 85, between Highway 129 and Highway 29. The crash caused the trailer to spill its load of dye, turning the roadway a bright purple or dark pink color. “There’s been a spill of organic textile/clothing dye in 2 of the 3 lanes,” emergency management said in a Facebook post. “Will be a while before a contractor cleans it up, and traffic is backed up. While the colors are pretty, we’re pretty sure you don’t want it on your car!” See the pics HERE.

Bear Breaks In And Steals Cake
Police in California shared body camera footage from an unusual call involving a bear that stole a freshly baked cake from a resident’s kitchen. The Simi Valley Police Department posted a video to Facebook showing what happened when a resident called 911 to report she and her son were locked in upstairs bedrooms while a bear rummaged through the ground floor of their home. Police said the resident threw keys to the officers from an opened window so they could enter through the front door. “As the officers entered the residence, they observed the bear in the kitchen,” the Facebook post said. “It appeared the bear ate a freshly baked cake and rummaged through the refrigerator.” Police said the bear was startled by the officers’ entrance and fled out the back door. The bear climbed a nearby tree, but descended after about 10 minutes and left the area. See the video HERE.

Florida Man Loses Arm In Gator Attack
A Florida man lost his arm in a grizzly alligator attack, only to spend the next three days wandering the swamp looking for help. Eric Merda, 43, of Sarasota, was visiting the Lake Manatee Fish Camp in Myakka City on July 17 when he got lost in the woods. When he arrived back at the lake, he opted to swim across it as opposed to walking around. “Not the smartest decision a Florida boy could make,” Merda admitted during an interview with 10 Tampa Bay that aired Monday. Not long into his swim, he told reporters, “I look over and there’s a gator on my right-hand side.” “She got my forearm so I grabbed her like this, she was trying to roll by she snapped her head so my arm with backwards like this completely.” Merda said the gator dragged him underwater three times before doing the death roll and taking off with his right arm. After swimming back to shore, Merda started walking and screaming for help. “Bones poking out, muscles, if I try to move my fingers, you could see it twitching,” Merda said. After three days of wandering, Merda came upon a fence with a man on the other side.

5 Signs You Are Being ‘Quiet Fired’ From Your Job

- Your boss is MIA for much-needed conversations.
A potential indication of quiet firing is when you get the sense that your boss is avoiding conversations with you, according to Ng. “They might have been busy, sure, but they could also be thinking, ‘I know this will get very awkward, very quickly, so let me just hide my face,’” he said. In a popular LinkedIn post, Dilber said that reshuffling or canceling an employee’s meetings is common in quiet firing.
“You manager’s No. 1 job is to ensure that the people on their teams are happy, successful and thriving, and to remove obstacles and blockers from their way. If your manager is not taking the time to understand your work … then there’s a problem,” she told HuffPost. “Whether it’s because your manager doesn’t believe in you or whether it’s because it’s a place that doesn’t support managers and leaders to be able to take care of their people … this is not an environment where you can grow and thrive,” she added.
- Your boss assigns opportunities you wanted to other team members.
Another sign of quiet firing is when your boss entrusts preferred projects to other team members instead of you, Ng said.
“Diversion is when your manager, who had previously promised to give you a certain assignment, all of a sudden redirects the work to someone else,” he said. “They might have changed their mind, sure, but they could also be thinking: ‘I don’t trust you. Let me give this high-profile project to someone I know will do this job and do it well.’” Ng suggests asking a co-worker if they’ve experienced a similar behavior change from your manager. Then, you can set up a meeting to talk with your boss about how you can get those choice assignments.
“The first step to solving the situation is to diagnose the situation. Is your manager’s behavior change really due to them quietly firing you?” he said. “Or might you be reading too much into the situation and interpreting their every action with doom and gloom in mind?”
- Your boss can’t provide clarity on why your co-workers are getting raises and promotions while you aren’t.
Even if your manager is physically present for career conversations, they may be quiet firing you if the discussions leave you confused about what you need to be more successful.
You may only get small raises while others receive much more, or you might be consistently passed over for promotions even though you’re working as hard as your peers, Dilber said. She recommends having a direct conversation with your manager about what they need to see from you to get that bigger raise or title. “If they’re not able to tell you, then to me that’s not a place where you have a trajectory or are going to have opportunities for growth,” Dilber said. “It’s your employer’s job to tell you that proactively.”
- You are placed on an unreasonable performance improvement plan.
Sometimes, performance improvement plans are genuine opportunities for employees to grow. However, if you are competent and the PIP is only based on subjective feedback, it’s actually just code for “we want you to quit.” Being placed on a PIP is perhaps the least quiet sign that you’re being managed out, but even when explaining your goals for improvement, an employer may not be honest about its true intent.
As Nadia De Ala, the founder of group coaching program Real You Leadership, previously told HuffPost, “if the action items are literally unachievable and highly improbable to deliver in the expected time frame, or if your boss and stakeholders aren’t offering any support for you to succeed in hitting all your to-do’s,” then the PIP might actually aim to just push you out the door.
- Your job expectations or workload changes without any input from you.
Another clue that you’re being quiet fired is when your employer’s expectations change without input from you and without any adjustment in title or pay, said career coach Jasmine Escalera.
Escalera said she saw this happen to a colleague who got her workload reduced and her job moved to another state. “They told her if she wanted to keep her job, she would have to move all the way across the country to California from New York, and that’s the only way she would be able to keep her position,” Escalera said. “They weren’t offering any additional relocation or any additional pay. It was for the same job, downgraded, in a completely different state.” When there is no renegotiation of terms with employees after a big change, the message being sent is “accept the way it is or just leave,” she said. “Organizations count on the fact that we are shackled to the money and to the salary, so they believe they can do this. And they also feel like they have the upper hand in that if you leave, they will find someone else.”
