Dennis Quaid Adopts Dennis Quaid

A Virginia animal shelter said a cat named Dennis Quaid will soon be on his way to a new happy home — with actor Dennis Quaid.  He said he happened to see a WSLS-TV story about a cat that shares his name at the Lynchburg Humane Society and decided he had to give the feline a home.  “It was really off the wall, but I just couldn’t resist. I had to,” Quaid told the TV station. “I’m out to save all the Dennis Quaids of the world.”  He said he recently launched a pet-themed podcast with Jimmy Jellinek and Dennis Quaid the cat will have a new home at the office they share.  “Maybe they should start naming animals in shelters after different celebrities and see who bites,” Quaid said.  Danielle Ulmer, the adoption center manager for the Lynchburg Humane Society, said staff were initially in disbelief.  “I was like there is no way this is real, like, someone is pranking us,” Ulmer said.

Michael Jordan Shoes Sell Big

A pair of shoes worn by Michael Jordan during a 1985 exhibition game broke a world record when they sold for $615,000 at an auction.  Auction house Christie’s said the Nike Air Jordan 1 High sneakers, worn by the basketball legend during an exhibition game in Trieste, Italy, were autographed by Jordan and described by the auctioneer as “a one-of-a-kind Michael Jordan artifact.”  The shoes were billed as especially unique due to a shard of glass embedded in the sole of the left shoe as a result of Jordan shattering a glass backboard with a forceful slam dunk.  The $615,000 final price for the shoes broke a record set by another pair of the player’s shoes, which sold for $560,000 earlier in 2020.  Christie’s said another pair of Jordan’s shoes, worn during a 1992 game, sold for $112,500 as part of the same auction.

Meghan and Harry Fired Their Nanny After 2 Days

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry allegedly fired their son Archie’s night nurse on her second shift for being “unprofessional and irresponsible.”  The claim is being made in the book “Finding Freedom,” written by royal reporters Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand. “Meghan and Harry felt they were forced to let the nurse go in the middle of her second night of work for being unprofessional and irresponsible,” wrote Scobie and Durand, as quoted by People magazine on Friday.  According to the authors, they hired a second night nurse who “did a fine job.” However, after their experience with the first nanny, “neither found themselves comfortable sleeping through the night without going to check on Archie regularly.”  The outlet reported Markle and Harry ultimately decided to take on the night duty themselves and hired a nanny just for during the day.

Kim and Kanye Rent Out Glamping Resort

In an attempt to fix their marriage, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian-West have rented out an entire 500-acre Colorado resort deep in the San Juan Mountains.  The Wests left Colorado’s Dunton River Camp earlier this week for the former cattle ranch along the Delores River, renting out the entire property for a whopping $43K per night. The high rate gave them exclusive access to the resort’s campfires, cabins, hot springs, hiking trails and everything else needed for a glamping getaway.  This latest family vacay follows a weeklong trip to the Dominican Republic where West was reunited with his four kids, North, 7, Saint, 4, Chicago, 2, and 15-month-old Psalm, after being holed up for weeks at his $14 million Wyoming ranch.  “They decided to travel together so they can be away in private,” a source told People, adding that the “focus is on their marriage.”

Ellen’s Break-In Was An Inside Job

A burglary that took place at Ellen Degeneres’ $27 million home in Montecito, California, last month was an “inside job,” according to information obtained by The Sun.  Police at the time said only that the home was burglarized on July 4 due to its “celebrity status.”  But a newsletter from the Montecito Association sent to residents Aug 12. quoted a local sheriff telling residents that the crime was an “inside job.”  As a result, the neighborhood association — which includes high-net-worth celebrities like Oprah Winfrey, Ariana Grande and recently, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry — told residents not to worry about more robberies taking place.  “If it had been a case of outsiders coming in and breaking and entering, I’d have alerted you to be on the lookout and lock up everything,” the newsletter read. “According to our very helpful Sheriff Lt. Arnoldi, that appears to be an inside job.”  An investigation is ongoing by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.

Old Stash Of Beer Found In Library

A Washington state library’s mystery section was found to contain a real-life enigma when removing a corner panel revealed a stash of beer and chewing gum from the 1980s.  The Walla Walla Public Library said employees have been performing renovations at the facility during the COVID-19 shutdown, and they recently removed a corner panel from the shelf housing the mystery book section and found a disintegrated paper bag containing five unopened cans of Hamm’s beer and an opened pack of Godzilla Heads gum.  Library officials said their research determined Godzilla Heads gum dates from the 1980s and the Hamm’s beer cans don’t include health warnings that were required from 1988 on, leading staff to believe the snack stash is more than 30 years old.  “It looked like somebody had just stashed it there and maybe thought they could get it later … but there was no way to get it out,” library director Erin Wells told CNN. “There were probably six beers that they bought and there was only five that we found so they might not have been thinking straight when they did it.”

Aggressive Turkey On The Loose

Officials in a California said they are attempting to capture and relocate a wild turkey that was a longtime beloved resident before becoming so aggressive he forced the closure of a local park.  Residents of the Grand Lake neighborhood of Oakland said Gerald the turkey has been a longtime resident of the area and was beloved by locals before he started becoming territorial and aggressive toward humans earlier in the summer — about the time turkey mating season began.  Gerald’s behavior became so aggressive that city officials ordered the closing of the neighborhood’s Morcom Rose Garden.  “He’s still there,” Ann Dunn, director of Oakland Animal Services, told the East Bay Times. “A Department of Fish and Wildlife officer tried to trap him and couldn’t, so he gave up.”  Officials said efforts are underway to capture and relocate the turkey.

Wild Boar Comes Out Of The Sea

A peaceful day on a German beach turned to chaos when a wild boar swam out of the Baltic Sea and ran loose through crowds of sunbathers.  A video shared by the Seebad Warnemunde resort on Facebook shows the boar coming out of the sea at a crowded beach in Schonagen, Schleswig-Holstein.  The footage shows a man attempt to ward the wild pig away from the crowds with a shovel, but the undeterred boar ran through the beach, sending sunbathers running for safety.  Witnesses said the boar eventually ran off down the coast.  The boar is believed to be the same animal earlier spotted swimming miles away, off the coast of Lower Saxony. Sailor Claus Schluter said he and his colleagues were unable to guide the boar out of the water and it was last seen swimming toward Schonagen.

Pumpkins Spell Out Message

A Michigan pumpkin farm awaiting its fall reopening remodeled its 13-acre corn maze with a timely message: “COVID GO AWAY.”  Johnson’s Giant Pumpkins in Saginaw said the corn maze was remodeled in anticipation of the business’ planned reopening Sept. 12. The farm said in a Facebook post that guests will be able to send a message to the coronavirus by visiting the maze when it opens.  “Stomp out ‘COVID GO AWAY’ as you wander through the 13-acre corn maze this fall,” the farm said in a Facebook post. Owner Gerald Johnson said the message should also serve as a reminder to be safe as the virus continues to spread.  See it HERE.

8 Stats That Show How Coronavirus Has Changed Our Spending Habits

Huffington Post

  1. A Third Of Americans Are Stress-Spending

With a global pandemic at hand, it’s no surprise that many people are feeling more stressed out than usual. There are many different coping strategies for stress, and for some, it’s spending money.

A recent survey by Credit Karma found that 35% of respondents made impulse buys to deal with stress during the coronavirus.

Among those who said they’ve made impulse purchases, close to half (45%) said they spend money because of stress at least once a week. Another 17% make impulse buys daily.

The survey also found that nearly one in five (18%) respondents are actually spending more now than they were before the pandemic.

  1. Entertainment And Alcohol Make Up Half Of All Nonessential Spending

Though you’re probably spending less money going out to bars and movies (like, none at all), there’s a good chance your spending on other escapist activities has increased.

Americans are spending the most nonessential money on entertainment (29%) and alcohol (23%) right now, according to a survey by WalletHub. Eighteen percent of respondents admitted that they’re actually overspending on nonessentials as well.

  1. Online Shopping Is Up 60% Over Last Year

With more time stuck at home and most nonessential stores closed down, Americans have taken their shopping online. Online sales of consumer packaged goods are up 60% over the same week last year, according to Nielsen data for the week ending April 25.

Of the items purchased online, food is up the most: 86% for the one-week period ending April 25 versus the same week in 2019. That’s followed by household care (up 51%), health and beauty care (up 49%), pet care (up 24%) and baby care (up 23%).

  1. Hand Sanitizer Sales Grew More Than Any Other Item In Stores

Though we’re forced to do more shopping online, essential businesses are still open to the public ― and the one item that’s seen the biggest surge in sales at physical stores is hand sanitizer.

Hand sanitizer takes the number one spot for in-store week-over-week sales growth. Last week, it held the third position but rose as people restocked their health and safety products. Sales of the stuff have also increased a whopping 420% over a year ago, according to Nielsen.

Behind hand sanitizer, the fastest-growing in-store purchases are oat milk (up 308% over the previous year), fresh meat alternatives (up 224%), baking powder (up 170%) and aerosol disinfectants (up 158%).

  1. Frozen Items Are The Most-Purchased Foods

As Americans worry about limiting their trips to the grocery store and potential disruptions to food supply chains, many are focused on buying foods that keep for a long time.

Not surprisingly, frozen foods are the top growing in-store purchases (up 47% year over year), according to Nielsen data. That’s followed by meat (up 41%) and dairy (up 32%) as consumers continue to load up on food staples.

  1. Spending On Transportation Is Way Down

Not only are we spending more time in isolation, but attitudes toward public transportation have also shifted considerably in the past month, according to a survey by IBM.

More than 20% of respondents who regularly relied on buses, subways or trains said they no longer will, while another 28% said they will likely use public transportation less often.

Ride-sharing apps are also suffering. More than half of those surveyed who had used ride-sharing apps and services said they will stop using them completely or use them less. Only 24% said they will stop using taxis and other traditional car services.

Just over 17% of respondents said they will rely on their personal vehicles to get around, with about one in four saying that that will be their exclusive mode of transportation going forward.

Many of those who were in the market for a new car are now waiting on the purchase, with about a quarter saying they plan to hold off for more than six months.

  1. 40% Of Spenders Rely On Contactless Payment

There have been concerns over physical cash and its potential to spread the coronavirus. In light of this, consumers are turning to technology to mitigate their risk.

Nearly 40% of respondents said they are likely to use contactless payment options via their mobile device or credit card when shopping, according to the IBM survey.

  1. A Quarter Of Shoppers Are Buying More From Local Businesses

With mandatory shutdown orders for nonessential businesses, even major retailers are feeling the pinch. Smaller mom and pop shops are especially hurting financially, which has prompted some people to prioritize shopping locally.

Some 25% of respondents in the IBM survey said they are now shopping more often at locally owned stores and buying more locally made, grown or sourced products.
