Bob Odenkirk Suffered Minor Heart Attack
Better Call Saul star Bob Odenkirk announced on Twitter that he is recovering from a “small heart attack.” He collapsed earlier this week on the show’s New Mexico set. “Hi. It’s Bob. Thank you. To my family and friends who have surrounded me this week. And for the outpouring of love from everyone who expressed concern and care for me. It’s overwhelming. But I feel the love and it means so much,” Odenkirk tweeted Friday. “I had a small heart attack. But I’m going to be ok thanks to Rosa Estrada and the doctors who knew how to fix the blockage without surgery. Also, AMC and SONYs support and help throughout this has been next-level. I’m going to take a beat to recover but I’ll be back soon.”

Dolly Parton Invests Her Royalties In Black Neighborhood
Dolly Parton was so blown away the first time she heard Whitney Houston’s version of her 1973 song, “I Will Always Love You” in Houston’s 1992 movie, “The Bodyguard,” that she told Oprah Winfrey last year she had to pull over the car she was driving so she wouldn’t crash it. Houston’s version, which became one of the all-time biggest singles, also netted Parton, who’s a world-class songwriter in addition to being a singer, about $10 million in royalties in the 1990s and the checks keep coming. Parton had a great idea about how to spend that money: She used it to help a Black neighborhood in Nashville. “I bought my big office complex down in Nashville,” she told Andy Cohen on Thursday’s episode of “Watch What Happens Live” (via Yahoo). “So I thought, ‘well this is a wonderful place to be.’” “I bought a property down in what was the Black area of town, and it was mostly just Black families and people that lived around there,” she continued. “And it was off the beaten path from 16th Avenue and I thought, ‘Well I am going to buy this place, the whole strip mall.’ And thought, ‘This is the perfect place for me to be,’ considering it was Whitney.” “So I just thought this was great, I’m just gonna be down here with her people, who are my people as well,” Parton said. “And so I just love the fact that I spent that money on a complex. And I think, ‘This is the house that Whitney built.’”

Flip Or Flop Resumes Taping
“Flip or Flop” is back in production one week after Tarek El Moussa allegedly blew up on ex-wife and co-star Christina Haack. They started filming together again on Thursday, PEOPLE reports. Haack shared photos from the set that same day, revealing her “morning glam” with a selfie as well as some cabinet and tile samples from the show’s current flip. El Moussa’s fiancée, Heather Rae Young from Netflix’s “Selling Sunset,” also shared a selfie with her future hubby on Instagram revealing she would be joining him on set for the day. El Moussa allegedly lost it on his ex because he didn’t like the way she signaled it was time for them to get back to work. El Moussa allegedly launched into a verbal assault, going so far as to call the mother of his two children — daughter Taylor, 10, and son Brayden, 5 — a “washed-up loser.” As if that wasn’t bad enough, El Moussa also allegedly compared Haack to his current fiancée, Young, saying she was “hotter and wealthier.” Haack and El Moussa finalized their divorce in Jan. 2018 — just over a year after they officially split in Dec. 2016 following an incident involving a gun and a 911 call.

Kanye West Still Living In Stadium, Hires Private Chef
Kanye West, who’s been living in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium while he finishes his latest, delayed album “Donda”, now has a contract in place with the venue to stay there while he finishes up his music. West was essentially squatting at the stadium after hosting a massive listening party there, and then deciding to take up residence in the massive 71,000-seat arena to put the finishing touches on the recording. He shared an image on social media of the cinderblock room where he is presumably staying, which includes just a twin bed, a TV and a small closet. But sources say he has now also brought in a private chef. Reports have said West will now release the record on Aug. 6. We noticed that Atlanta’s NFL squad, the Falcons, has a ticketed practice at the stadium on Aug. 7. West has already been at the stadium during a pro soccer game. A rep for the stadium told The New York Post: “We aren’t at liberty to divulge any details as it relates to Mr. West’s stay at the stadium.”

Oprah Sells Off Washington Estate
Oprah Winfrey has quietly sold her 43-acre waterfront estate on Orcas Island for $14 million in an off-market deal. Located in Washington state and known as Madroneagle, the media, business and philanthropic mogul scored big after initially purchasing the home in 2018 for $8.3 million, property records show. The deal marks the highest price ever paid for an Orcas Island property, located north of Seattle, sources familiar with the sale told the Biz Journal. The main home, which is made up of four bedrooms and three baths, spans over 10,200 square feet, all of which was essentially gutted by Oprah in a remodel. The compound includes several other houses, a half-mile of waterfront and beach views, a greenhouse, an expansive shop and a mother-in-law apartment. Amenities include an entertainment room, wine cellar, library, large office, sauna and an Asian garden. Winfrey sold the property because she wasn’t there often. “They just figured she’s too busy and never going to really use it, and that’s why they were willing to sell it,” Sources said.

Orlando Bloom Defends Royal Cartoon
Orlando Bloom slammed claims HBO Max’s The Prince was created with “malicious” intent nearly one year before the series sparked backlash for its portrayal of the royal family. “[It’s not] intended to be,” Bloom told the Hollywood Reporter in August 2020, defending creator Gary Janetti. “He’s really got his finger on the pulse, Gary. He’s so smart and so zeitgeisty. I rolled the dice on it, but I’m going to have to mention it to Prince Harry when I next see him, because I’m not going to be able to not. Oddly, I’m sure I’m going to see him at some point, just because of the nature of the universe, it always throws people together.” He voices the character of Prince Harry in the animated TV show, which premiered on HBO Max on Thursday. It was originally slated for a late spring 2021 debut, but the streaming service announced it would delay the launch in the wake of Prince Philip’s death in April. Shortly after its debut, The Prince received backlash on social media for parodying Prince George, 8. “There are obviously much worse things going on in the world right now, I know this. But the fact not one of these grown-ass adults took issue with playing a part in bullying a real-life 8-year-old kid (via HBO’s ‘The Prince’) is rank and I’ve lost all respect for them, tbh,” one fan tweeted.

Mysterious Bug Bites
Virginia health officials and insect experts are trying to determine the origins of mysterious bug bites being reported by residents of one county. Locals in Arlington County said they have received what initially appear to be mosquito bites, but the bumps quickly swelled to much larger than what would normally be expected. “It started to grow and it swelled, and then I was at work one day and I noticed that it was blistering,” Morgan Dailey told WRC-TV. The Arlington County Health Department said officials have been unable to identify the source of the bites, but department experts are looking into at least one suspect. “The leading suspect at this point is something called a pyemote, which is a type of mite that likes to feed on cicada eggs, so they must be very happy with their food supply at the moment,” health department spokesman Kurt Larrick says. Some of the reported swellings could be from mosquitoes, skin infections or allergic reactions.

Another Jetpack Man Spotted In Los Angeles
Pilots flying in and out of Los Angeles International Airport were given a warning after a possible sighting of a man flying a jetpack in the area. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed a pilot contacted aid traffic control on Wednesday evening to report a possible sighting of a man wearing a jetpack flying in the area. “A Boeing 747 pilot reported seeing an object that might have resembled a jetpack 15 miles east of LAX at 5,000 feet altitude,” a Federal Aviation Administration representative told KABC-TV. “Out of an abundance of caution, air traffic controllers alerted other pilots in the vicinity.” The FAA said there were no unusual objects spotted on radar in the area Wednesday evening. The possible sighting comes after a number of similar sightings in late 2020. A video captured in December shows something resembling a man wearing a jetpack in the sky over Los Angeles. Investigators have suggested the object in the video could be a drone made to resemble a man.

Swordfish Took 8 Hours To Reel In!
A Maryland man participating in a fishing tournament said it took him eight hours to reel in the 301-pound swordfish that earned him a state record. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources said Peter Schultz was participating in the Big Fish Classic Tournament in Ocean City when he hooked a swordfish on his line about 50 miles offshore at Washington Canyon. Schultz told the department that he reeled in the massive swordfish with help from fishing companions. He said it was the “fish of a lifetime.” The agency said Schultz is the first record holder for catching a swordfish in the Atlantic division, one of the state’s four divisions for sport fishing records.

6 Psychologically Damaging Things People Say At Work
Huffington Post
- “No offense but …” or “No disrespect but …”
Mary Abbajay, president of the leadership development consultancy Careerstone Group, was once hired by a company to conduct team building. When she met the manager of the team she would work with, he told her, “With all due respect, I’ve forgotten more about team building than you’ll ever know.”
Abbajay ended up turning down the job as a result. “This was 15 years ago, and it stills sticks with me,” she said. “If he hadn’t said ‘with all due respect,’ I might’ve taken it differently. That’s just the icing on the cake that shows ‘I do not respect you, I think you’re wrong.’”
Along with the similar phrase “No offense …,” she said, these condescending words signal that the speaker does not respect the other person’s point of view.
- “I don’t have time for this.”
Psychological safety is key to keeping teams together. Researchers describe it as the mental space in which employees are free to speak up, share bad news, and ask for help when they are in over their heads.
If your pattern in responding to colleagues’ requests is telling them that you are too busy or don’t have enough time, it sends a signal that the other person is not a priority and that they shouldn’t go to you when they need help.
“That person is going to be reluctant to come back to you again if there’s a problem or situation, and it may throw them off so much that they’re worried too much about taking your time and annoying you than getting what they need,” Abbajay said.
When managers say this, it can silence their team and make members less likely to own up to mistakes, she added.
- “What X is trying to say is …”
If you’ve been in a meeting with a colleague who feels the need to reframe what you just said in their own words, then you understand the frustration of hearing this phrase. Abbajay said this is the one she dislikes the most, because it doesn’t move the conversation productively forward even if that’s the speaker’s intent.
When someone does this to you, you may jump to a conclusion like “I’m inarticulate, I’m stupid, people aren’t understanding me, people aren’t respecting it out of my mouth, so you feel like you have to say it out of your mouth,” she said. “It’s very diminishing. It lowers the other person’s status.”
Rather than rephrasing colleagues’ words, Abbajay said colleagues could simply request when they need more of an explanation in a conversation.
- “You seem young for …” or “You’re so articulate for a …”
Lawrese Brown, the founder of C-Track Training, a workplace education company, cited the type of undermining comments that you can sometimes be the recipient of when you go against a colleague’s assumptions and expectations of how you should present yourself at work. These comments can range from microaggressions about your identity to questions about your leadership potential.
Brown said she has heard from clients who have been told they were being a “weak” leader or “seemed young.” One client was advised to change her hairstyle.
“Her manager told her people would take her more seriously if she straightened her hair,” she said. “These all fall under the umbrella of, ‘You’re being perceived as not appropriate; something about your self-presentation or the way you’re being perceived causes people to question your ability to do the job.’”
These kind of comments can get under employees’ skin and make them feel inadequate at work. “We start to feel the way we’re operating is not appropriate or effective, or we’re just conscious that it could be a knock against us,” Brown said.
- “I didn’t mean it like that.”
Brown said it’s OK to note that words can be interpreted differently, but that you should be careful not to be dismissive when others disagree. “I didn’t mean it like that” is a common defensive comment that does not acknowledge how your words can be received, she said.
The goal is to recognize that your words carry weight, and can do harm. Remind yourself someone is on the receiving end of your comment, and first ask yourself, “Is it productive?” before you say it, she said.
- “Nobody else has brought this up to me” or “You’re taking this personally.”
Brown said managers commonly make the mistake of using invalidating comments such as, “Nobody else has brought this up to me” when a team or employee raises a concern. According to Brown, that can send the message: “If this is only important to you, is this worth taking seriously?”
When colleagues invalidate your feelings like this, or you do it to others, it can stop much-needed conversations from happening.
″‘You’re too emotional about this, you’re taking this personally. Other people haven’t said this.’ What you’re missing by saying this is you’re undermining the other person,” Brown said. “These are phrases, that once said, very few people have the tools to have the difficult conversation to unpack that. People just don’t say anything.“
And ultimately, when co-workers stop talking to each other, communication breaks down, mistakes are more likely to happen, tensions run higher and everyone is more on edge.
Your colleagues will “tend to be more people-pleasing, because they no longer trust their own voice, or perception of an experience, or it inhibits their ability to trust their colleagues,” Brown said. “When we don’t trust, we put more rigid processes in place, and it’s because we don’t believe that our word will be acknowledged or that our needs in environments will be met.”
