Christopher Plummer Dies

Christopher Plummer, an Oscar, Tony and Emmy-award winning actor best known for his role in The Sound of Music, has died at the age of 91.  He died peacefully at his home in Connecticut with his wife Elaine Taylor by his side, his family confirmed to Deadline.  Plummer’s friend and manager Lou Pitt also confirmed his death to Variety.  “Chris was an extraordinary man who deeply loved and respected his profession with great old fashion manners, self deprecating humor and the music of words. He was a national treasure who deeply relished his Canadian roots. Through his art and humanity, he touched all of our hearts and his legendary life will endure for all generations to come. He will forever be with us,” Pitt said in a statement.  No cause of death has been disclosed.
****Very sad. So, that’s him and Hal Holbrooke. Is there a third?? We hope not!!
*****By the way, we had two legendary women pass: Cloris Leachman and Cicely Tyyson. Still holding our breath on THAT one!!!

Nick Cannon Gets His Job Back

Nick Cannon has resumed working with ViacomCBS following his firing in summer 2020.  Nick and VH1, a network owned by ViacomCBS, will restart production on Cannon’s long-running series Wild ‘N Out.  ViacomCBS cut ties with Cannon in July after the actor and television personality made anti-Semitic remarks on his podcast.  “ViacomCBS condemns bigotry of any kind and we categorically denounce all forms of anti-Semitism,” ViacomCBS said at the time. “We have spoken with Nick Cannon about an episode of his podcast Cannon’s Class on YouTube, which promoted hateful speech and spread anti-Semitic conspiracy theories.”  Cannon subsequently apologized to the Jewish community for his “hurtful” remarks. Cannon has since taken steps to educate himself and with worked with Jewish groups, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  “Nick has not only apologized and taken responsibility for his comment, but he has also worked to educate himself and others through engagement with Jewish leaders and on his platforms,” a rep for ViacomCBS’ MTV Entertainment Group said. “Those efforts are of the utmost importance and that’s why we have invited him to rejoin our team.”

Jennifer Lawrence was injured after a controlled glass explosion went wrong in Boston, according to multiple reports.  She is there to film “Don’t Look Up” for Netflix, a comedy co-starring Leonardo DiCaprioTimothée Chalamet also stars in the pic, and he was present for the explosion, according to The Hollywood Reporter.  Production was temporarily suspended on the flick but Lawrence is expected to be back on set on Monday, the outlet reports.  TMZ first reported the news and said that the scene was being filmed at 1 a.m. when a shard of glass cut the actress’ eyelid.  The injury “wasn’t that bad,” though other details on the mishap are scarce.

Stars Make Big Donation To Bartenders

The alcohol brands of Ryan Reynolds, Sean “Diddy” Combs, and David Beckham have joined together to donate $1 million towards organizations that benefit bartenders.  In a hilarious video posted Friday, Aviation American Gin owner Reynolds, DeLeón Tequila owner Diddy and Haig Whisky owner Beckham are seen taking a sip of a cocktail made with each of their alcohol brands, only to spit it out in disgust.  “This is why we need mixologists and why we’re donating $1 million to their causes,” the ad stated.  Beverage company Diageo, who owns all three brands, will donate the funds to Another Round, Another Rally, a nonprofit for the hospitality industry in the U.S. providing reimbursement grants and immersive educational scholarships.  Funds will also go to the Bartender’s Benevolent Fund, a non-profit for hospitality professionals in Canada, as well as Drinks Trust UK, an organization that has been providing support, care and assistance to the drinks industry workforce since 1886, according to a press release.

Olivia Wilde Bans A-Holes From Her Set

Olivia Wilde is being strict on the rules of her set: “No a–holes” allowed.  In the wake of Shia LaBeouf’s abrupt exit from her sophomore directorial endeavor, “Don’t Worry Darling,” she implemented a “no a–holes policy” on the set of her forthcoming film, in order to cancel out pesky pecking order problems during production.  “Someone, who’s a very established actor and director in this industry, gave me really terrible advice that was helpful, because I just knew I had to do the opposite,” she explained to director Emerald Fennell for Variety’s Directors on Directors.  “The no a–holes policy. It puts everybody on the same level,” Wilde said. “I also noticed as an actress for years how the hierarchy of the set separated the actors from the crew in this very strange way that serves no one.  “I think actors would actually like to know more about what’s happening there, when you’re pulling my focus? What is that lens change?,” she said. “But the idea of, don’t bother the actors and keep them separate, and don’t look at them. I think it makes everyone quite anxious.”
********We watched someone being fired for actually speaking to Eddie Murphy one time, so we know it’s true!!!
********If you eliminate all the a-holes from a Hollywood set, there won’t be anyone there!!!
*******Does her banning a-holes.. make her the a-hole???

Suzanne Somers Interrupted By Home Invader

Actress Suzanne Somers had a most unusual encounter Friday evening while broadcasting her Facebook Live makeup tutorial and sale.  She was livestreaming from her iconic Palm Springs home when she was interrupted by an intruder who suddenly walked into the house.  No one was hurt in the incident and the man, who Somers briefly spoke with, left after he was informed he had entered a private residence.    The encounter, which lasted about four minutes, was captured toward the end of Somers’ 49-minute broadcast.  In the video, Somers begins to talk about how she applies her favorite lipstick, when she abruptly stops.  “Is somebody here?” she asks her husband Alan Hamel, a former talk show host and television producer. Hamel, who joined Somers on camera early in the livestream, has stepped out of the picture but is still nearby as the two have continued to talk during the broadcast.  “I just heard a person,” Somers says as she looks around.  Another man’s voice is then heard off-camera saying, “I’m here. Hi!”  She looks to the side then calmly tells the man, “Come here.”  The man who sounds as if he has stepped closer, apologizes and says he’s terrified because ghosts were following him.  See the video HERE (:40 minute Mark)
**********There ARE a lot of ghosts in Palm Springs!!! Sinatra, etc.
*****In fact, some of those ghosts are still walking around in human bodies!!!

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry had an hour-long video meeting with California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Oct. 19, less than a month before the presidential election, The Sun reported.  It’s unknown what Harry and Meghan discussed during the meeting, which came as Newsom was in the midst of deciding who would fill Vice President Kamala Harris’ spot in the U.S. Senate.  The governor ultimately selected Alex Padilla to succeed Harris.  Royals are expected to stay out of politics.  They already upset the Royals by urging Americans to vote in the Presidential election.

Stolen Handcuffs Returned With Apology Note

The Los Angeles Police Department said a pair of handcuffs taken from an officer more than 60 years ago arrived in a package along with a letter of apology from the now-grandfather who walked off with them.  The LAPD tweeted photos Thursday showing the handcuffs and letter that arrived along with a $100 payment recently.  The letter was authored by a 74-year-old grandfather from Vista who wrote he had taken the handcuffs off the ground when an officer dropped them during an altercation at a local Bob’s Big Boy restaurant more than 60 years ago.  “I have felt a little guilty each time I saw the handcuffs over the years, but did nothing about it,” the man wrote.  The man said he decided to finally return the handcuffs to set a good example for his grandsons, ages 6 and 9.  “They were aghast and asked me why I stole the handcuffs from a policeman. I, of course, had no good explanation and I told them it was the wrong thing to do and I wasn’t proud of it and then I danced around the subject,” the letter states.  See the pic HERE.

Town Offers Money To Stay

A small California town with a tourism industry hard-hit by the COVID-19 pandemic is offering visitors $100 to come and stay.  The Visit Santa Maria Valley program is providing $100 vouchers, which can be used at the town’s wineries, breweries and restaurants, to tourists who stay for at least two nights at hotels there.  The promotion, which launched Thursday, runs through March 31.  “Santa Maria Valley has so much to offer,” Jennifer Harrison, director of the Santa Maria Valley Visitors Bureau, told CNN. “We have beautiful beaches, hotels and wineries that are such a great option for budget-conscious travelers during a time of economic rebound.”  Harrison said the town is a safer travel location than many other California destinations, as the area is less crowded and social distancing can be more easily enforced.  “Visit Santa Maria Valley is calling on visitors to discover the region in a safe, responsible way,” Harrison said.

TikTok Used To Find Owner Of Lost Package

A California man used video-sharing app TikTok to find the rightful owner of a package that mistakenly was delivered to his house.  Scotty Trujillo, of Fresno, said he received a Walmart package that was damaged and had mold on it, and he saw it was addressed to Rosalind Freye.  Trujillo said he went to the address listed for Freye on the package’s label, but there was no answer at the door, so he decided to try using TikTok to get her attention.  “I just said ‘Hey can you help me find this person?'” Trujillo told KMPH-TV. “It’s a TikTok thing, almost exclusive to TikTok. I said I’d put this out in the atmosphere out in the environment and see what happens.”  Trujillo said he hoped the video would spread, but he was shocked to discover the next day that it had gone viral.  “The next thing you know, we get almost a million views the next morning. I woke up to 15,000 followers. It just started growing and growing and I’m like, she is going to have to see this,” he said.  One of the comments on the video came from a woman who identified herself as Freye’s niece.

7 Of The Most Annoying Things People Say To Nondrinkers

Huffington Post

  1. ‘Why aren’t you drinking?’

If someone tells you they aren’t drinking, don’t demand a reason. You also shouldn’t blurt out guesses (“OMG are you pregnant?” “Are you in AA?”). You don’t want to put someone on the spot. You simply don’t know their reasons and it’s not your place to probe.

“It’s important to remember that asking ‘why’ or applying any pressure is a boundary violation,” said Hannah Wertz, a licensed psychologist in New York. “In general, an attitude of acceptance and non-judgment is the most important thing. If someone says no to a drink, try to refrain from dwelling on this decision or asking a second or third time.”

You actually don’t have to weigh in at all. “I would rather people say nothing,” said Sarah, 32, who is four years sober from alcohol and asked to withhold her last name for privacy. “Hoping for a non-comment in any social situation is ridiculous, I know, but it’s just like not commenting on someone’s appearance: Don’t comment on someone’s appearance.”

Instead, take into consideration that not every person is drinking in any given social environment ― for a range of reasons ― and create an environment that’s accepting of that.

  1. ‘Can’t you have just one?’

Again, you don’t know someone’s relationship with alcohol. “No matter whether it’s an abstinence or a moderation approach, they’re looking to reduce harm, which means harm has been caused,” Rozen said.

Putting pressure on someone to drink when you don’t know the context of why they stopped can be hurtful.

“The act of continually pressuring someone who doesn’t drink in a ‘just this once’ way shows a lack of respect for a choice someone has made for themselves for what are likely personal and sometimes delicate or painful reasons,” said Kelly Murphy, 32, who is four years sober from alcohol. “Would you trip someone who was running a marathon?”

  1. ‘I guess we can’t hang out then!’

“Someone who’s in recovery is already fearful about what to do with their friends,” said Rachel Schwartz, a New York-based alcohol and substance abuse counselor. They don’t want to feel like they’ve been shut out or abandoned.

Instead of making assumptions about how this newly sober person wants to approach different scenarios, ask them what they’re comfortable with. Are they OK being in social settings that involve drinking?

Schwartz suggested continuing to make the invitation, but “giving a heads-up so they know what they’re getting into and they can prepare their coping skills.” Or offer alternatives, like doing something separately one-on-one. Find ways to let them know you still value the friendship without relying on alcohol to facilitate it.

  1. ‘We used to have so much fun together when we drank.’

People who give up alcohol might worry how the relationship dynamics will shift once you’ve removed that bonding element. In general, it can bring up anxiety about connecting with others without that social lubricant.

Hearing that sobriety makes you “not fun” confirms and exacerbates these fears while also undermining the difficult choice that person has made.

“I think the primary reason this comment is hurtful is because there’s an implication that what made you fun when you drank was the alcohol, not your personality,” Murphy said. “It implies that your value as a person has been diminished somehow now that you don’t drink.”

It’s worth considering, “if someone you care about makes a shift in their drinking patterns and it feels at all upsetting or threatening, you might also benefit from similar practices,” Rozen said.

  1. ‘Oh cool, yeah, I did Dry January once.’

Sober-ish culture has made not drinking somewhat more socially acceptable. But on the flipside, approaching sobriety as a wellness trend without acknowledging what the struggle of recovery might look like for others may sound insensitive and dismissive.

“I think if you want to try a dry month, go for it. That’s a great goal,” said Megan Johnson, 36, who is nine years sober from alcohol and drugs. “But when you’re trying to live a sober life on a daily basis because the alternative could kill you, the stakes are a little bit higher.”

Recognize that the decision not to drink is different for everyone.

  1. ‘I had no idea!’

With this, it’s not just what you say but the way you say it. Your tone of voice matters.

“Don’t act surprised: ‘Oh shit, you’re sober?’” Schwartz said. “Think about how you can be kind in how you speak to someone. You don’t want them to feel like they’re on the spot, or like an animal on display, or a spokesperson.”

And while you might have the best intentions in telling someone that they don’t “seem” like they have a problem, you’re actually adding to the stigma of addiction by putting them in a box of what society says an addict looks like. In reality, there’s a spectrum of substance use disorders and they can affect anyone.

  1. Going silent.

It also matters what you don’t say. If someone tells you they’ve quit drinking and your response is to stop talking to them or stop inviting them to things, that can be as hurtful as openly expressing judgment.

Sure, it might come from a sense of awkwardness over how to handle the situation, but that kind of distancing response is “just as loud to the individual,” according to Rozen.

“Someone in recovery or making a conscious shift about a relationship with a substance — if they share that with you, it’s really a kind of coming out experience for them every time they do it,” Rozen said. “The level of support they receive in that moment is memorable and important.”

If you’re at a loss as to how to respond, don’t be afraid to straight up ask someone how you can best support them. Schwartz recommended open-ended questions instead of yes-no questions. For example: “How’s it going?” “Do you want to talk about it?”

Bottom line, the most important sentiment you can convey is that you care and you’re here for them, even if you might fumble your words along the way.
