Box Office Results

Jurassic World Dominion” was at the top of box office charts, scoring a massive $143 million in its domestic debut.  It’s only the third time in the pandemic era that ticket sales have collectively eclipsed the $200 million mark, according to Comscore. That’s also thanks to the enduring popularity of “Top Gun: Maverick,” which is still flying high in second place.  “Top Gun: Maverick” stayed strong, adding $50 million from 4,262 North American cinemas in its third weekend in theaters. That’s a huge turnout for any film at this point in its theatrical run, but it’s even more impressive to pull in those numbers at a time in which “Dominion” is also packing a major punch in cinemas.  Overseas, the latest “Jurassic” adventure has generated a promising $245 million, bringing its worldwide tally to $389.17 million.

Justin Bieber Catches Rare Virus

Justin Bieber announced on Instagram on Friday that he has Ramsay Hunt Syndrome, which is causing facial paralysis. Bieber cancelled tour dates Tuesday due to a then undisclosed illness.  In the three minute video, Bieber demonstrated the paralysis. His right eye could not blink and when he smiled, only the left side of his mouth moved.  Bieber said he expects to make a full recovery after taking time to rest.  “My body’s telling me I gotta slow down,” Bieber said. ” I gotta go get my rest on so that I can get my face back to where it’s supposed to be.”  According to the Mayo Clinic, Ramsay Hunt comes from the virus that causes chickenpox. The virus remains in your body for the rest of your life and can cause flare-ups.  Ramsay Hunt can be treated with medications and steroids. Bieber said he is doing facial exercises to recover.  See the video HERE.

JLo Wasn’t Happy About Sharing Halftime Show

Jennifer Lopez was not happy about the NFL’s decision to have her share the Super Bowl LIV halftime show stage with Shakira.  Her frustrations with the NFL were documented in her upcoming Netflix documentary, “Halftime.”  “This is the worst idea in the world to have two people do the Super Bowl,” Lopez told her music director, (via Sports Illustrated). “It was the worst idea in the world.”  She was particularly frustrated with the time constraints that came with having two headliners.  “We have six f—ing minutes. We have 30 seconds of a song, and if we take a minute, that’s it, we’ve got five left,” Lopez said in the documentary. “But, there’s got to be certain songs that we sing, though. We have to have our singing moments. It’s not going to be a dance f—ing revue. We have to sing our message.”  The NFL also attempted to have Lopez’ performance with the children in cages removed from the show.  “We left rehearsal and I noticed everybody was freaking out, but I don’t know why,” Lopez said. “I get a call from Benny, and he’s like, ‘They want to pull the cages.’ That night, the higher-ups at the NFL saw it for the first time, and they’re like, ‘Hey, you can’t do that.'”  However, Lopez went through with the idea anyway.

Harrison Ford Was Cut From E.T.

Harrison Ford was supposed to be in Steven Spielberg’s 1982 blockbuster E.T., but his scene ended up on the cutting-room floor.  Fresh from the success of Spielberg’s 1981 “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” Ford had agreed to a cameo as Elliott’s school principal. Played by Henry Thomas, Elliott is the young boy who befriends E.T. before trying to help him get back home.  In the deleted footage, Ford admonishes Elliott for freeing frogs in class.  “Elliot is in the principal’s office after the frog incident,” Spielberg told Entertainment Weekly. “We don’t ever see Harrison’s face. We just hear his voice, see his body.”  The darkly lit scene was an “odd sequence,” reporter Anthony Breznican noted.  “I see the pot, the pills, the angel wings,” Ford, as the school principal, drones on in the cut footage, lecturing Elliott on drug use.  In the film, Elliott and E.T. are psychically linked. “So as E.T. is lifting all of the communicator paraphernalia up the stairs, Henry starts rising off the ground in the chair until his head hits the ceiling,” Spielberg said.  Harrison’s back is turned so this feat remains unnoticed.  Ultimately, Spielberg dropped the scene because much of the movie was shot from a child’s perspective and no adult faces — except for Elliott’s mom, Mary, played by Dee Wallace — are seen until the last part of the movie.  See the scene HERE.
*********Now we know… that Harrison was probably higher than “ET!!!”

Paris Hilton Blows Off Presidential Gig

Paris Hilton chose to attend Britney Spears’ wedding over DJing for President Biden Thursday since both events were scheduled on the same night, according to the heiress.  “I was actually asked to DJ for the President and all of the other presidents around the world for the dinner, but this was more important to me,” Hilton, 41, shared on her “This Is Paris” podcast Friday.  “And I’m not going to go into any details because it was the princess bride’s night and that’s her story to tell, but all I can say is that I’m so incredibly happy for her. She looked stunning and it just made me so happy to see that she found her fairytale.”  Biden was in Los Angeles Thursday for the Summit of the Americas, where Western Hemisphere world leaders gathered to promote a “prosperous and inclusive future” between their represented countries.

Huge Dog Goes To The Store

Police in Florida were summoned to a store when a “giant dog” wandered into the business, browsed for a few hours and refused to leave at closing time.  The Bradenton Police Department said the “giant dog,” a 135-pound canine, wandered into the Dollar General store in Bradenton and employees initially decided to let the animal go about his business, as he wasn’t disturbing any merchandise or other customers.  The employees called police at closing time because the dog had been inside the store for several hours and was showing no sign of leaving.  Police shared body camera footage on Facebook showing police escorting the dog out of the store.  The department said police were able to identify the dog as a canine named Bentley and reunited the pet with his owner.  See the video HERE.

Sex Toy Found Inside Fish

An Indiana man who noticed some unusual lumps in a catfish reeled in by his friend said he was cleaning the catch at home when he discovered the contents of its stomach included an adult toy.  Richard Kesar said he and his friend Jon Hoop went fishing on his boat in the Lawrenceburg area when Hoop reeled in his first-ever blue catfish.  “We noticed when we got it in the boat that its stomach was huge,” Kesar told WTTV-TV.  Kesar said he initially thought the fish may have swallowed some eggs or smaller creatures, but he later pushed on the catfish’s belly and felt two hard objects that did not feel like normal fish food.  Kesar said he and Hoop took the fish back to his house for cleaning.  “We decided to cut it open, and we found the foam ball, part of a fish, and the other object,” he said.  The “other object” was a phallic sex toy, Kesar said. He posted photos of the fish’s unusual snack on Facebook.  “I have no idea how or why it ended up in the river,” Kesar said.  Kesar said his 3-year-old daughter was helping clean the fish, and he and his wife had to quickly avert her look.  See the video HERE.

Sleep Tips For When The News Cycle Is Bad And Your Brain Won’t Shut Off

HUFFINGTON POST

First, rule out other health conditions

While the bad things going on around you and in the news might be affecting your sleep, there could also be underlying medical conditions that you’ll want to rule out first.

“Anxiety and depression are commonly associated with difficulty sleeping and thus should always be part of an evaluation,” said Dr. Kristin Gill, a board-certified psychiatrist and faculty member at New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine. “Other medical conditions that can cause difficulty sleeping that your doctor may want to evaluate you for include (but are not limited to) heart failure, hyperthyroidism, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma.”

Wake up at the same time each day

Casey recommended developing a consistent sleep routine to keep your circadian rhythm on track.

“Focus on a wake time rather than a bedtime because we have more control over waking up to an alarm rather than hoping to be tired by a certain time each night,” she said. “This is helpful because when our body has a consistent cycle, then it helps with melatonin secretion at the same time each day. Then we naturally become tired and know what to expect from our bodies day to day.”

Practice realistic habits that may help reduce stress

When bad things are going on around us, that can increase anxiety symptoms and keep you up at night.

“This is probably the most important factor in treating chronic insomnia because anxiety will keep us up all night even if we are physically exhausted,” Casey said. “Try practicing stress management techniques during the day at neutral times, such as diaphragmatic breathing or progressive muscle relaxation, which will help us manage this anxiety if it pops up at night.”

Apps like Real, Calm and Headspace have guided meditations available if that sounds more helpful.

If that doesn’t help you, then create a designated “worry time.” It might sound weird, but it can help you compartmentalize your stress. Choose a time each day to worry, long before bed. This way it’ll help prevent worry and anxiety from creeping back up when you want to go to sleep.

Don’t use the bed for anything other than sleep and sex

Whether you’re working from home or watching television on your bed, it’s time to change the location. Try sitting on the couch, at the kitchen table or at a coffee shop.

“By doing several other activities in your bed, a negative association can be created between being awake (and often feeling stressed out) and your usual place for sleep,” said Sarah Silverman, a holistic sleep doctor and behavioral sleep medicine specialist. “In other words, instead of your bed being a place for peaceful slumber, it becomes a cue for being awake.”

Turn off your phone notifications an hour before bed

It’s natural to want to stay informed. Tuning out completely can also come with its own set of guilt or mental health struggles. However, your brain isn’t meant to absorb this much traumatic information.

Set boundaries by turning off your push notifications or news alerts at least an hour before bed. This can help you mentally unwind so you’re not focusing on the news right as you crawl between the sheets. It also is a reasonable amount of time to step away from the doom and gloom. The information will be there when you get up.

Move your body during the day

Exercise is important to overall health and can also help you sleep. You don’t have to do a vigorous fitness routine to benefit from it ― walking, dancing, running, hula hooping, etc. will suffice.

“Increasing your overall level of physical activity has been shown to improve the quality of sleep,” Silverman said. “Not to mention, exercise reduces stress and muscle tension, which can influence how you fall asleep, too.”

Take stock of what you’re eating, drinking or taking right before bed

You may also be decreasing your chances of getting a good night’s sleep by what you put into your body, such as food or medication, so it’s a good idea to evaluate those.

“The most common medications and substances that could be keeping you up at night include caffeine, alcohol, glucocorticoids (“steroid” medications), stimulants, diuretics and bronchodilators (used to treat asthma and COPD),” Gill said.

If medication is the culprit, talk to your doctor about the best time to take it or if you can switch to something that doesn’t influence your sleep.

Don’t stay in bed if you can’t sleep

You might think that lying in bed will help you fall asleep, but it’ll actually do the opposite.

“If you are in bed, and you cannot sleep, get up and reset. Staying in bed awake may actually program your bed to send a ‘wake’ signal instead of the desired ‘sleep’ signal you want,” said Michael A. Grandner, an instructor in the department of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania and a sleep expert at Oura.

Grandner suggested getting up after about 20 to 30 minutes, but if you start to feel frustrated about not sleeping, that is also a cue to get up and try to go back to sleep again in a little while.

If you adjusted your lifestyle and still can’t sleep, then it might be worth it to visit a sleep doctor or insomnia expert for professional guidance and counsel.

“General sleep advice is great if you already have good sleep habits and want to optimize your sleep, but if you have insomnia or a primary sleep problem, general sleep tips may not be helpful, and it’s important to talk with your doctor or see a sleep specialist if you’re struggling to sleep well on a regular basis,” Silverman said.
