William and Harry Feud Began At Philip’s Funeral

Relations between Prince William and Prince Harry remain frosty over Meghan Markle, despite rumors that they had reconciled at the funeral of their grandfather in April, according to a report.  Although family and friends had hoped the funeral of Prince Philip would bring the brothers together, William seemed uncompromising, calling Markle “that bloody woman” in a conversation with friends, according to the Daily Mail.  “But look at the way that bloody woman treated my staff — merciless,” Prince William said, according to a royal source cited by the newspaper.  Relations between them have been distant since last year when Markle and Harry left the royal family, moving first to Canada and then to Los Angeles. They reportedly worsened after Harry participated in a bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey in March.

Michael Strahan’s ex-wife was arrested for allegedly harassing her former girlfriend in Manhattan, according to police and reports.  Jean Strahan allegedly appeared at the Upper West Side home of Marianne Ayer around 7 p.m. Friday — even though Ayer has an order of protection requiring Jean to stay away, cops said.  Jean was charged with criminal contempt for allegedly breaking the order of protection, the NYPD said.  Ayer has accused Jean of grand larceny, disorderly conduct, harassment and forcible touching, according to TMZ, which cited court documents filed earlier this month.  Ayer also alleged that Jean threatened her with a plastic gun and kicked her German Shepherd, the report said.  Jean Strahan is his second wife.

Queen Invites Harry and Meghan To Jubilee

Queen Elizabeth II extended an olive branch to grandson Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, inviting the couple to join the royal family for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations next summer.  They are expected to attend the Queen’s official birthday parade, Trooping the Colour, which is part of the four-day festivities to mark her 70 years on the throne.  It’s unclear if they will appear on the Buckingham Palace balcony beside the Queen and other senior royals for the traditional Royal Air Force flyover, the report said.  “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been invited and I’m sure the Queen is very much looking forward to seeing them there,” a royal source told the UK tabloid.  “The balcony moment will be decided much nearer the time but there’s a limit to how many family members should be on it, and I would have thought that working Royals who contribute to the family would be higher on the list than the Sussexes,” the source added.

Bruce Springsteen Opens Up Broadway

The 471-day shutdown of Broadway, the longest in its history, ended Saturday night with Bruce Springsteen.  He kicked off a 30-performance limited engagement of his solo show this weekend at the St. James Theatre.  “It’s great to be here,” Springsteen said to his excited audience, who had to prove they were vaccinated to take their seats and shout “Bruuuuuuuuuce!”  “No masks, sitting next to each other in one room.”  The crowd roared.  He ended the show with this zinger: “My case was, ‘The United States vs. Bruce Springsteen.’ That’s always comforting to hear — the entire nation is against you!” Referring to his DUI earlier this year.

He was so fortunate that he was able to do what he loved, and we know that he not once took it for granted.”  It was Trebek’s third straight victory and sixth overall in the category. He was nominated a record 32 times during his career.

Marilyn Manson To Surrender Himself

Marilyn Manson has agreed to turn himself in on an active arrest warrant over an alleged incident at a 2019 concert in which the rocker allegedly shot “snot” at a cameraperson, a New Hampshire police chief said.  He will turn himself in on the warrant in Los Angeles.   In May, it was revealed that a warrant for Manson, whose real name is Brian Hugh Warner, was issued in Gilford, New Hampshire, after the musician allegedly failed to answer to pending charges for a 2019 incident involving a videographer.   It was issued for two counts of Class A misdemeanor simple assault.  An arraignment could be scheduled by mid-August depending on when he turns himself in, authorities said. He does not have to be present for the appearance.

iPhone Found In River Still Beeping

A search and rescue dive team in Idaho recovered an iPhone that had been dropped into a river three days earlier — and the alarm was still sounding.  Tom Adams said he and his wife, Marlo, were kayaking on the Snake River when his boat overturned near the Tilden Bridge Boat Ramp, causing him to lose his phone, keys, wallet and fishing pole into the fast-moving waters.  Adams ended up contacting the Bingham County Search and Rescue Dive Team, which agreed to help look for his lost property as a training exercise.  “They use opportunities like this to practice and get more dive time in to prepare for the real calls, and more important events such as lifesaving,” Adams told the East Idaho News. Adams said it took about 20 minutes of searching before one of the divers surfaced with his keys and his iPhone — which was still sounding an alarm.  “It was still alarming from my Sunday morning wake-up call reminder,” Adams said.

Pancake Record

A grocery store chain broke a Guinness World Record at a Missouri location by preparing a serving of 13,000 pancakes.  Hy-Vee assembled a team of 13 chefs Thursday at the chain’s store in Blue Springs to spend 7 hours, 16 minutes cooking up 13,000 pancakes.  A Guinness adjudicator was on hand to verify that the serving of pancakes broke the record of 12,716, which was set in Russia in 2017.  The pancakes were donated to Harvesters-The Community Food Network, a regional food bank serving the greater Kansas City area in both Missouri and Kansas.  The record attempt was timed to coincide with the launch of Hy-Vee’s “Best Breakfast in America” menu.

Teen Rescued From Bank Vault

Firefighters broke through a wall in New York to rescue a 14-year-old girl who was trapped inside a clothing store dressing room that used to be a bank vault. The Port Jefferson Fire Department said crews responded alongside the Terryville Fire Department, the Suffolk County Police Department and Port Jefferson EMS when the teenager became trapped inside the dressing room at clothing store Kate & Hale in Port Jefferson Village.   The teenager, Smithtown resident Giavanna Diesso, said she had been shopping with her family when her 7-year-old brother pushed the propped steel vault door that leads to the changing area closed with her on the other side.  Giavanna, her family and the store’s employees soon discovered the door would not reopen.  Firefighters said it took about 90 minutes to break through the wall and free Giavanna, who was not injured.

Neighbor Cuts Tree In Half

The couple, in Sheffield, U.K., called in an arborist to cut down half of the branches of a 16-foot-tall fir tree that were hanging over their driveway, according to reports. The rest of the tree is in their neighbor’s yard.   Their neighbor, Bharat Mistry, said that the tree has been in his front yard for 25 years. However, during the coronavirus pandemic lockdown last March, Mistry’s neighbors reportedly asked to have the tree removed, BBC reported.   More recently, the neighbors complained about birds in the tree making too much noise and pooping on their driveway, so Mistry told SWNS that he tried to work on a solution.   “We had asked if we could get it trimmed back and put a net in it so it would stop birds getting in, but there was no compromise with them,” Mistry told SWNS. See the pic HERE.

4 Easy Steps to Setting Up an Emergency Fund so You’re Ready for Anything

The Penny Hoarder

How to Start an Emergency Fund

Follow these steps to get started building an emergency fund today, so you can handle your next unexpected predicament without maxing out credit cards, taking out a loan or tapping into your home equity.

  1. Determine How Much Money You Need Saved for Emergencies

The general rule of thumb touted by many personal finance professionals is to have between three to six months’ worth of expenses stored up in your emergency fund.

That doesn’t necessarily mean you need a minimum of triple your monthly household income. But ideally you’d have at least three times the amount of money it takes to keep your household running for a month.

Look at your budget — or the past few months’ worth of bank statements — to figure out the amount of money it takes for you to live. This doesn’t include what you spend dining out or on clothes or on cable. Those things can be easily eliminated if you had to drop down to a bare-bones budget after a job loss.

Even when considering only your essential monthly expenses, it can feel intimidating to try to save three to six times that amount. Start by breaking your savings goal into smaller chunks. Focus on saving $500 and build from there to eventually reach your emergency fund goal.

You’ll hear some financial experts, like Dave Ramsey, talk about having an emergency fund with just $1,000. (Ramsey’s famous money management plan — known as “baby steps” — does urge followers to save three to six months of living expenses, but not until after paying off all non-mortgage debt.)

However, keep in mind that your emergency fund is all about giving you peace of mind that you’d be able to weather a crisis and cover unexpected expenses. Accredited financial counselor Kumiko Love told The Penny Hoarder she tried Dave Ramsey’s plan but didn’t stick to it because as a single mom she thought $1,000 wouldn’t be enough to get through a true emergency.

“I was up at night worried that I didn’t have enough for safety in my emergency fund,” Love said.

Also, consider that if your car insurance deductible is $1,000, and you got into a serious fender bender, you wouldn’t have enough money saved to cover car repairs plus medical expenses and any other costs.

Though three to six months of expenses is the standard, your goal for your emergency fund may vary depending on your situation. If you’re the sole breadwinner of your family or you work in a field where it’d be tough to quickly get another job in the event of a layoff, you might want to save up more than six months of living expenses.

  1. Figure Out Where You’ll Keep Your Emergency Fund

It’s important to keep your emergency savings liquid and easy to access. Avoid locking your money in a savings vehicle where you’d encounter penalty fees by withdrawing it in an emergency, such as a 401(k) account or a five-year certificate of deposit. Also, although investing your savings could help it grow, you don’t want to risk losing your emergency funds.

Michael Gerstman of Gerstman Financial Group recommends you keep your emergency fund in a no-risk account, like an FDIC-insured savings account or money market account.

Stashing your cash in a checking account is another option, though most won’t earn you as much interest.

Make sure you store your emergency fund in an account where you won’t be tempted to spend the money. Consider an online bank or a bank account without a debit card if you feel you might be enticed to make unnecessary withdrawals. Putting your savings in a different bank or credit union than where your main checking account is will add another layer of separation.

  1. Find Ways to Add to Your Emergency Fund

A mixture of regular savings contributions and lump-sum deposits will build the balance quickly.

Have your employer split your direct deposit so a portion of each paycheck goes to your emergency fund, or set up automatic transfers to your savings account after each pay day. When you don’t see the money in your main checking account, you won’t be tempted to spend it.

If your budget is tight, you could cut your spending by switching over to the cash envelope system, cancelling monthly subscriptions, joining a Buy Nothing group or switching to less expensive service providers. Or you could increase your income by taking on a side hustle or working a second, part-time job.

You can also increase the amount of money in your emergency savings account by depositing any extra cash you receive from one-time windfalls. Sell items around your house that you don’t use or could part with. Crash with friends for a week and rent out your home on Airbnb. Transfer work bonuses and your income tax refund over to your rainy day fund before you spend a dime.

  1. Know When (and When Not) to Tap Into Your Savings

It’s not enough to know how to start an emergency fund. You must also understand what qualifies as a good reason to take money out — and when you should leave it alone.

It can be tempting to see thousands of dollars in your account, but avoid using that cash unless you have unexpected expenses due to true emergencies.

A good rule of thumb is to avoid spending your emergency cash on expenses that can be predicted, like routine car maintenance, a large annual insurance bill or summer camp enrollment. You don’t want to build an emergency fund only to spend that money on expenses you could have prepared for. Set up separate sinking funds for those savings goals instead.

And keep in mind, once you’ve spent money from your emergency fund, be sure to replenish it so you’re prepared for the next big thing that comes your way.
