Beloved Harry Potter Star Dies

Harry Potter and James Bond actor Robbie Coltrane has died.  He was 72.  Coltrane died at a hospital near his home in Larbert, Scotland, according to Deadline. He was reportedly in poor health for the past two years.  Coltrane was known for playing Rubeus Hagrid, the groundskeeper at Hogwarts School and a friend and ally of Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe), in the Harry Potter films.  He also portrayed Valentin Dmitrovich Zukovsky in the James Bond movies GoldenEye (1995) and The World is Not Enough (1999).  The actor was made an OBE in 2006 for his contributions to drama.

Mel Gibson To Testify In Weinstein Trial

Mel Gibson can testify about what he learned from one of Harvey Weinstein’s accusers, a judge ruled Friday in the rape and sexual assault trial.  He was one of many witnesses, and by far the best known, whose identities were revealed in Los Angeles Superior Court.  The judge and attorneys had taken a break from jury selection for motions on what evidence will be allowed at the trial, and who can testify. The witness list for the trial is sealed.  Judge Lisa B. Lench ruled that Gibson can testify in support of his masseuse and friend, who will be known as Jane Doe #3 at the trial.  Weinstein is accused of committing sexual battery by restraint against the woman, one of 11 rape and sexual assault counts in the trial against the 70-year-old.  Prosecutors said that after getting a massage from the woman at a California hotel in Beverly Hills in May of 2010, a naked Weinstein followed her into the bathroom and masturbated. Weinstein has pleaded not guilty, and denied any non-consensual sexual activity.

Will Prince Harry Be Banned From The Coronation?

King Charles III will reportedly ban Prince Harry from his coronation if his upcoming memoir attacks Queen Consort Camilla.  “It is one thing for Harry to attack Charles, he can take it on the chin, but if Harry forces him to choose, by laying into Camilla in his book, I have no doubt he will choose Camilla,” a source told the Daily Beast on Thursday, adding that the new monarch is “incredibly protective” of his second wife. Another insider told the outlet that Harry and Meghan are on a tentative list for the 2023 ceremony, “leaving the door open for [them] to get the call up — or be excluded.”  The memoir was initially slated for publication in November, but the date was pushed back over the summer.  Earlier this month, royal biographer Tom Bower said that Charles and his family members are “hugely nervous” about the book, calling it a “time bomb.”  Bower believes the book will come out “around Easter,” noting that it will feature a chapter about Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral last month.

Halloween costumes modeled after Jeffery Dahmer are expected to be hugely popular.  The trend follows Netflix’s release of “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” which has become the second-biggest English-speaking series in Netflix history.  But the inspiration has the internet outraged — with many social media users begging the public to forget about Halloween and the festivities around it and to instead think about the families of Jeffrey Dahmer’s victims.  “I think that the Jeffrey Dahmer costumes are a step too far,” Twitter user @swifteves tweeted.  “These things actually happened. Families have trauma from these events,” the person wrote.   “This is gonna be a hard Halloween for some, and I feel truly sad that’s the case.”

Scarlett Johansson Recalls Awkward Orgasm Recording

According to Scarlett Johansson, who voiced Samantha, the AI who Joaquin Phoenix’s character Theodore falls in love with in the movie HER, filming a simulated sex scene between them was “so gross” that Phoenix fled the set.  During a conversation with Dax Shepard and Monica Padman’s “Armchair Expert” podcast, Johansson recalls Phoenix struggling to keep it together after an initial take of the scene, which involves Samantha virtually orgasming while Theodore has intercourse with a sex surrogate. It’s an uncomfortable scene to watch—and apparently, even more uncomfortable to shoot.  “We tried to get through one take, and he was, like, losing it,” Johansson says of her co-star. “He left the studio. He needed a break.”  Phoenix’s discomfort proved more than worthwhile— in 2013, Her won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and was nominated for Best Picture. Patient Plays Sax During Brain Surgery

Doctors in Italy shared details of a recent, delicate brain surgery during which patient remained awake and playing the saxophone.  Paideia International Hospital in Rome said in a news release that the 35-year-old patient, identified as G.Z., was kept awake and played his saxophone during the 9-hour surgery to remove a tumor from his brain.  Doctors said the musical performance allowed the surgeons to map the different functions of his brain as they operated.  “Awake surgery makes it possible to map with extreme precision during surgery the neuronal networks that underlie the various brain functions such as playing, speaking, moving, remembering, counting,” Dr. Christian Brogna, who led the surgery team, said in the release.

Bakery Makes Giant Hans Solo Creation

A California bakery’s entry in the local scarecrow contest is going viral after taking inspiration from actor Harrison Ford and a galaxy far, far away to create “Pan Solo.”  Catherine Pervan and daughter Hannalee Pervan, the owners of One House Bakery in Benicia, used dough to sculpt Han Solo frozen in carbonite from the end of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.  The creation, dubbed “Pan Solo,” is the duo’s entry in Benicia’s 15th annual Scarecrow Contest.  “People are just super excited,” Hannalee Pervan told The San Francisco Examiner. “We see people, like, smelling the sculpture and poking it. They’re trying to figure out how it’s made.”  Photos of Pan Solo were posted to the bakery’s Facebook and Instagram accounts and quickly went viral. See the pics HERE.

Old Doctor Has No Plans To Retire

A 100-year-old Ohio man who holds the Guinness World Record for being the world’s oldest practicing doctor said he has no plans to retire anytime soon.  Dr. Howard Tucker of Cleveland was initially certified as the world’s oldest practicing doctor in February 2021, when he was 98 years and 231 days old.  Tucker, now 100, said he continues to work full time, with his typical day lasting from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.  The doctor said he caught COVID-19 shortly after his 100th birthday in July, but he continued to teach his residents via Zoom while recovering.  “I regard this Guinness World Records title as a singular honor and look upon it as another achievement in a long, satisfying and happy life,” Tucker told Guinness World Records.

If time is money, you’ll be saving a bundle when that Christmas cheer lands on your doorstep the day after Thanksgiving.

Pre-ordering for Christmas trees tends to open in early October. That means you can cross that purchase off your to-do list long before the bustle of the holiday season. Just remember to calculate shipping costs into the price.  Some options to buy a real, 5-foot Christmas tree online include:

However, it’s not as simple as rolling up on a national or state forest in your SUV and sawing down a 10-footer. You’ll need to secure a permit first from the US Forest Service or the appropriate state or local agency.

Be aware that cutting down a tree might be more work than you bargained for. Bring extra hands to help, the right tools for the job and dress warmly.

 

4. Wait Until Later in the Season

If you’re not the type to do much holiday planning or entertaining, waiting to buy a Christmas tree is your best bet. The week before Christmas, tree farm stock will have dwindled, but the pricing may be much easier on your pocketbook.

Just be sure that the tree you pick is still healthy, especially if it’s been hanging around the lot for a few weeks and is starting to drop needles.

 

5. Choose a Smaller or Different Variety of Christmas Tree

Charlie Brown Christmas trees deserve love, too. If the tree is spindly or oddly shaped, chances are you can score some savings compared to fuller trees.Find tree types that balance what you want with what costs less per foot.

And if you don’t need a towering behemoth for your vaulted ceilings, stick with a live Christmas tree on the shorter side or consider artificial, pre-lit tabletop trees. Taller isn’t always better when it comes to trees. Gotta leave room for the tree topper!

 

6. Make Your Own DIY Christmas Tree

If a real or artificial Christmas tree isn’t in your holiday budget this year, don’t stress. You can make beautiful holiday displays that double as trees from a plethora of cheap household goods like books, balloons and even cacti.
