David Attenborough Breaks Instagram Record
David Attenborough set a new record after joining the social media app Instagram this week. He set a new record Thursday for the fastest time to reach one million followers on Instagram. As his first post, Attenborough explained his decision to join Instagram in a video Thursday morning. “I’m making this move and exploring this new way of communication to me, because as we all know, the world is in trouble,” Attenborough says. “Continents are on fire. Glaciers are melting. Coral reefs are dying. Fish are disappearing from our oceans. The list goes on and on.” “But we know that to do about it, and that’s why I’m tackling this new way, for me, of communication. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be recording messages to explain what the problems are and how we can deal with them,” he adds. Demi Lovato and Max Ehrich have ended their engagement. They announced their engagement in July. They were first rumored to be dating in March. Then, Lovato and Ehrich seemingly confirmed their relationship in May when they were featured in Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande’s “Stuck with U” music video together. “It was a tough decision, but Demi and Max have decided to go their separate ways to focus on their respective careers,” a source told People magazine. “They have respect and love for one another and will always cherish the time they spent together.” According to a video posted on his Instagram on Thursday, Ehrich is currently filming a movie, though it is unclear where the shoot is taking place. However, just this weekend, the star shared a post on Instagram and tagged a music studio located in Georgia.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s comments urging Americans to vote were a “violation” of their deal to leave the royal family, prompting talks about whether to strip the couple of their titles, according to a report. They irked the other royals when they called on American voters last week to “reject hate speech, misinformation and online negativity” in “the most important election of our lifetime,” the Sunday Times reported. Royals are supposed to remain politically neutral and the pair had pledged when they resigned from the family that “everything they do will uphold the values of Her Majesty,” the outlet reported. “The [royal] family are all wringing their hands, thinking: where is this going and does this abide by the deal to uphold the values of the Queen?” a royal aide told the outlet. “The feeling is it’s a violation of the agreement.” Buckingham Palace said last week that “any comments made by Prince Harry are made in a personal capacity.” But sources said the royal household was embarrassed by the comments, which were seen as a dig at President Trump. “If Trump is re-elected and makes another visit here, what is the Queen supposed to say when her grandson and his wife have effectively campaigned against him?” a source told the newspaper. Following the couple’s remarks, discussions were held among aides about how to further distance the royal household from them, the report said. Among the possibilities under consideration would be to take away their royal highness titles, which they were allowed to keep but not use when they hammered out their Megxit agreement.

Harrison Ford Cleared By The FAA
Harrison Ford has been cleared in his FAA investigation. In April, an investigation was reportedly launched after he made an error while operating a plane on a runway at the Hawthorne Airport in Southern California. “Mr. Ford crossed the airport’s only runway in his aircraft after he misheard a radio instruction from ATC. He immediately acknowledged the mistake and apologized to ATC for the error,” Ford’s rep said in a statement at the time. “The purpose of the flight was to maintain currency and proficiency in the aircraft.” No additional action was taken by the FAA, the statement said. According to airport audio obtained by TMZ from the incident, Ford failed to follow a tower operator’s direction to “hold short” on the runway due to “traffic” as he operated the aircraft from the runway to the taxiway.

Lori Loughlin’s Cushy Prison
Lori Loughlin will be serving out her prison sentence in a lap of luxury by incarceration standards when she begins her punishment for her role in the college admissions scandal. She was granted a request to handpick where she wanted to serve out her sentence and elected to do her time at FCI Victorville, a California medium-security federal correctional institution and the same facility where “Dance Moms” star Abby Lee Miller served her time. After Loughlin reports she’ll be housed in a cubicle-style open dormitory where she will have access to hobby classes such as Pilates, spinning, ceramics or crocheting, citing the facilities’ inmate handbook. Her prison garb will be of the green variety and she will have also have to wear the standard issued “safety shoes.” Wakeup call will come at 5:30 a.m. when the lights spring on while her lights-out curfew is strictly enforced at 9:30 p.m. Loughlin will be granted 300 minutes of phone time which she can use each month in 15-minute increments. She will also have full access to the prison’s commissary that will allow Loughlin to spend up to $360 per month on everyday essentials such as Colgate toothpaste, Jergens lotion, and other personal care products and snacks.

Wedding Dress Reunion
Two Ontario, Canada, women were reunited with their wedding dresses 31 years after a mix-up at the cleaners that was discovered only recently. Cathy Prior said she hadn’t looked at her wedding dress since it was cleaned and boxed at Cascade Cleaners in St. Marys, Ontario, after her wedding in 1989. Prior said in a Facebook post that she recently opened the box and realized she had the wrong dress. The post came to the attention of Kayla Hotson, who had recently attempted to procure the dress worn by her mother, Janet Hotson, for her own wedding, but opened the box to find it was the wrong dress. Prior and Hotson exchanged photos and soon realized they had one another’s dresses. The women met up at Cascade Cleaners, where the mix-up happened 31 years ago, to exchange gowns.

Expensive Teapot
A small “teapot” found by a British man while cleaning out a garage filled with family relics nearly ended up at a thrift store before being auctioned for nearly $500,000. Hansons Auctioneers said the anonymous 51-year-old seller was cleaning out boxes from a family-owned garage in Church Gresley, Derbyshire, England, when he came across the “teapot” his mother used to display at his childhood home. “We believe it was brought back to England by my grandfather who was stationed in the Far East during the Second World War and was awarded a Burma Star,” the seller said. The man said the item was nearly donated to a thrift store, but he decided to have it appraised and was surprised to learn it was an 18th century Chinese wine ewer that may have been used in the palace of Emperor Qianlong. Hansons said there are two “nearly identical” items known to exist and they are housed at museums in China and Taiwan.

Tree Hugging Record
A Tennessee woman broke a Guinness World Record by hugging a tree in a Chattanooga park for 10 hours and 5 minutes. Adrienne Long spent 10 hours and 5 minutes with her arms wrapped around a walnut tree at Heritage Park in Chattanooga’s Brainerd neighborhood to break the previous tree-hugging record, which stood at 8 hours, 15 minutes. Long’s friend Sarah Medley, owner of Studio 59 Aveda Salon and Spa, organized activities for Long and spectators including dance, yoga and guided meditation during the attempt. The attempt was live-streamed on the World Record Tree Hug page on Facebook. See the video HERE.

Qantas Selling Fully Stocked Beverage Carts
Australian airline Qantas, which recently retired its fleet of Boeing 747 jets, is giving aviation fans the chance to bring a piece of the airline home by selling 1,000 fully stocked bar carts. The airline said the carts, which were removed from the planes before they were flown to California for their retirement, are stocked with goods including champagne, Australian wines, Tim Tam cookies, pajamas and Qantas First Class Sheridan throw pillows. The carts are being sold for $685 each — or 169,000 Qantas Points. The airline’s 747s were in service for nearly 50 years before being retired six months earlier than planned due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “There has been huge demand for Qantas 747 memorabilia and Frequent Flyers have expressed keen interest to convert the bespoke in-flight trolley into everything from lamp stands to storage units. The fact they come fully stocked with some of Qantas’ most popular on-board service items will hopefully inspire some high-flying fun at home,” said Phil Capps, Qantas’ executive manager of product and service.

7 Ways to Finance Home Improvements

- Pay Cash
If you have the cash to spend on a project, this one probably seems like an easy choice.
But how much should you shell out for a renovation — and when should you hang onto the cash instead?
Right now, most financial advisers say hold onto your cash, given the current economic uncertainty.
If you do use cash, ideally, you should put off the project until you can pay for it in full — you can often get a discount from a contractor by paying for the project in cash.
That’s Emanuel’s advice to her clients, but she noted that she found out firsthand that sometimes a project can’t be put off until you’re financially prepared.
“We could have waited until we had all the money to pay cash for [the air conditioner],” she said. “But that would likely be a year down the road, and when we had inspections done on our AC, they said it probably won’t make it through the summer.”
- Dip Into Your Savings
Gathering the cash for a specific project is ideal, but what about dipping into your savings?
Again, in an ideal world, you should have a specific savings account for the inevitable home repairs and projects.
“If we can be in the habit of putting even a couple hundred dollars in the savings every single month, label that account for home repairs and projects,” Emanuel said.
- Apply for a HELOC
Regardless of whether you have the cash, you potentially have another source for funding: the equity in your home. There are three options: a home equity line of credit (HELOC), a home equity loan and cash-out refinancing.
And if you’re like a growing number of Americans, you may have built up a sizable nest egg in your home. Home equity has climbed from $7 trillion in 2011 to $15.5 trillion in 2018, according to Harvard’s Joint Center for Housing Studies.
So which form of financing should you choose?
A HELOC is more like applying for a credit card — you’ll receive a line of credit that you can use at your discretion.
If your project is an ongoing one — or you want to pay for it in phases — a HELOC may be the better choice, according to Emanuel.
“Maybe they want to be able to pull out $5,000, get some of the work done and pay down some of the balance,” she said. “Then they go to the next part — they pull out $10,000.
“Or there are multiple contractors that they’re going to have to access the line of credit for at different periods of time. It can work pretty well for that.”
You can typically get a much better interest rate on equity lines of credit compared to credit cards, but they’re adjustable rates — which means your interest rate could increase suddenly.
But beware of what you’re signing up for, Emanuel warned. An interest-only HELOC could offer an enticing monthly payment during the draw period — that’s when you can withdraw funds and make interest-only payments.
- Use a Home Equity Loan
Another choice for tapping the money you have invested in your home is a home equity loan, also known as a second mortgage.
For home equity loans, the lender gives you your money all at once, and you repay it at a fixed interest rate over a set period of time.
- Use Cash-out Refinancing
In a cash-out refinance, you’re replacing your existing mortgage with a new one for a larger amount. You can withdraw the difference between your new mortgage and the old one — lenders typically limit the loan amount to 80% of your home’s value.
If you can snag a substantially lower interest rate than your current mortgage rate, the savings could potentially allow you to get the money you need for the renovation, enjoy lower monthly payments and still be on track to pay off your mortgage in the same timeframe as your old mortgage.
But you’ll need to factor in all the fees associated with refinancing — like closing costs, appraisals and title searches — before deciding if you’ll save on this option.
The option is best for those who want to stay in their home for several years to recoup the costs.
And you’ll need the discipline to spend the money on only a project that adds value to your home — think completely renovating a kitchen or adding square footage to the home — to make a cash-out option worth tapping the equity in your home.
- Apply for a Home Improvement Personal Loan
The good news is that it’s typically a lot easier and faster to get a personal loan compared to a home equity loan — there’s a lot less paperwork involved because it’s an unsecured loan. If you apply for an online personal loan, you could potentially be approved and have the money in your account in less than a week.
But to qualify for the low interest rates that online banks advertise, you’ll need a credit score of 600 or better. And you may not be able to borrow nearly as much with a personal loan compared to home-equity lending options if you have substantial equity in your home.
If you have less than stellar credit, you could be facing double-digit interest rates on the loan, so read the terms and conditions carefully before you sign.
- Accept a 0% Financing Offer
So what did Emanuel end up choosing to finance her air-conditioner replacement project?
“The last option was that we could get financing through the company that was going to install the AC units,” she said, adding that big-box retailers like Lowe’s and Home Depot often run specials for similar offers for financing projects.
“They had a partnership with Wells Fargo that was doing 18 months of 0% financing for home improvements. Ultimately, that’s the route we took.”
And while her family is enjoying their air-conditioned comfort without paying any interest until 2021, she warned that this is not the best option for everyone.
That’s because the 0% financing offers aren’t actually interest free — they’re interest deferred, meaning you’re still accruing the interest. But that interest will be waived so long as you pay the full amount by the introductory period’s deadline.
