Ratings Crash On The Talk
“The Talk” suffered a significant dip in ratings among daytime programs following Sharon Osbourne’s exit from the show. The CBS talk show returned to its regular programming schedule on April 12, following a nearly month-long hiatus after an on-air spat between Osbourne and co-host Sheryl Underwood resulted in the former reality star leaving the show for good. The Soap Opera Network reports that the ratings for “The Talk” during the week of April 12-16 dipped to the No. 13 spot, the last place on the list, in both the Women 18-49 demographic (a 0.23 rating) and the Women 25-54 demographic (a 0.35 rating). But the outlet notes it had “sustained” this spot, meaning ratings already had plummeted prior to Osbourne’s departure.

Burning Man Cancelled
Burning Man organizers announced Tuesday this year’s annual arts festival held in Black Rock Desert, Nev., will be canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic with plans to hold the event again in 2022. The iconic countercultural event held for nine days yearly that attracts tens of thousands to the desert during summer was canceled last year because of the pandemic and organizers on the festival’s website said that they had hoped the makeshift city would be up and running this summer. “But, although here in the United States we may be feeling the weight lifting and the light at the end of the tunnel brightening, we are still in the pandemic, and the uncertainties that need to be resolved are impossible to resolve in the time we have,” they said. “We have decided to set our sights on Black Rock City 2022.” The organizers said this decision was made due to “a combination of problems that in an ever-changing world resist certainty to move forward.”

Logan Paul Gets His Next Opponent
Retired former boxing champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. will make another return to the ring to fight YouTube star Logan Paul in an exhibition bout June 6 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla. “Me and Logan Paul will be fighting at Hard Rock Stadium,” Mayweather wrote Tuesday night on Instagram. “[Mayweather Promotions, Fanmio and Showtime] have come together to bring an epic event!!!” Mayweather said tickets for the event will go on sale next week. The exhibition boxing match was initially scheduled for late February but was postponed indefinitely until Tuesday’s announcement. Back in February, the bout was billed as a “special exhibition.” Tuesday’s announcement didn’t specify how many rounds the fight will be or what glove sizes they will use. The 44-year-old Mayweather (50-0, 27 KOs) hasn’t fought professionally since 2017, when he defeated UFC star Conor McGregor via TKO in the 10th round of a boxing match at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Mayweather retired from boxing after that victory. He later fought Japanese kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa on New Year’s Eve in 2018, but that was an exhibition match. Mayweather won 15 major world championships in his career as a junior lightweight, lightweight, junior welterweight, welterweight and junior middleweight.

Jeff Lowe Accuses Carole Baskin Of Spying
Jeff Lowe claims Carole Baskin and her husband Howard Baskin have been snooping on him utilizing drone technology. The owner of the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park in Oklahoma alleged to TMZ on Tuesday that he called local police to report some activity at his plot in Thackerville after his son supposedly spotted a drone flying high above the property. He further claims that when he went to confront a film crew that appeared to be filming, Baskin and Howard bolted and Lowe ended up in a scuffle with one of his neighbors, who was allegedly with the film crew. Lowe’s neighbors – a couple – ran away when confronted but the neighbors’ son allegedly got in a tussle with Lowe, the gossip site reported Lowe told them of the incident on Tuesday. TMZ further reported, citing local law enforcement, that Baskin was in fact in the area but was not on Lowe’s property and thus, did not break any laws.

Randy Quaid may be joining the race for governor of California. After months of sharp criticism, the state’s current governor, Gavin Newsom, will face a recall election, as it was announced on Monday that the signature threshold to trigger such an election has been met. Reality star Caitlyn Jenner has already announced her own candidacy for the position, and now, Quaid has said that he’s interested in tossing his hat into the ring. He took to Twitter on Tuesday to share his thoughts on the matter. “I’m seriously considering running for governor,” he revealed. “The prosecutorial corruption in California (esp Santa Barbara & the Bell scandal) is rampant; and I promise that if elected I will clean up the District Attorney Offices throughout the state.” He concluded with a hashtag: “#RandyQuaid4CAGOV.”

Citizen Kane Loses Perfect Score
“Citizen Kane” has lost its edge. The 1941 movie directed by Orson Welles is known as one of the best films in history, and until very recently, held a 100% Fresh score on popular movie review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. However, the website recently added an 80-year-old review of the movie to its already-compiled collection that dropped the score to 99%. On May 7, 1941, Mae Tinee wrote a largely negative review of the movie for the Chicago Tribune Daily. “It’s interesting. It’s different. In fact, it’s bizarre enough to become a museum piece,” she wrote at the time. “But its sacrifice of simplicity to eccentricity robs it of distinction and general entertainment value.” Tinee continued: “Citizen Kane presents an almost clinical dissection of a complete egotist. It runs to gargantuan sets and arty photography – shadowy and spooky – which, however, according to our Eddie Johnson, is something for the books. I wouldn’t know about that. I only know it gives one the creeps and that I kept wishing they’d let a little sunshine in.” Additionally, she noted that she didn’t much “care for” Joseph Cotten’s performance. The only things that the critic praised were some of the acting, specifically that done by Welles, Ruth Warrick and Everett Sloane. Her piece is titled, “Citizen Kane Fails to Impress Critic as Greatest Ever Filmed.”

Lost Lottery Ticket Wins Big
A Maryland woman said a forgotten scratch-off ticket she found at the bottom of her purse turned out to be a $250,000 top prize winner. She told Maryland Lottery officials she was on her lunch break from work when a coworker’s purchase of a scratch-off lottery ticket from the Exxon station in Reisterstown inspired her to follow suit. The woman said she put the ticket in her purse, where it was forgotten for about a week. The player told officials she came across the ticket in her purse and scratched it, initially thinking it wasn’t a winner until she revealed the “win all” symbol, earning her a $250,000 jackpot. She said the win was difficult to believe. “I scanned the ticket with my lottery app for the final dose of reality,” the woman said. She said her husband required a bit of extra convincing.

Bomb Squad Called Over Sex Toy
Police in Germany said a bomb squad was summoned on a report of a grenade spotted by a jogger in the woods, but they arrived to find the object was a rubber sex toy. The Police Headquarters in Lower Bavaria said the bomb squad was called to a wooded area outside the city of Passau, near the Austrian border, on a report of a hand grenade in a plastic bag found by a jogger. The bomb squad arrived on the scene and discovered the grenade-shaped object was made of rubber and was accompanied by two condoms, an empty bottle of personal lubricant and a USB charging cord. Police said the bomb squad did an online search and confirmed the suspected explosive was a harmless sex toy.

Floating Swimming Pool
A development in London is preparing to open the world’s largest freestanding acrylic pool structure — a transparent-bottom pool suspended 115 feet over the ground. EcoWorld Ballymore said the Sky Pool connects the 10th stories of the Embassy Gardens skyscrapers in London’s Nine Elms neighborhood. The swimming pool, designed to be the world’s largest freestanding acrylic pool structure, was created by architects Arup Associates, engineers Eckersley O’Callaghan and aquarium designers Reynolds. The pool, scheduled to be officially unveiled in May, is 82 feet long and stretches from one building to the other, with a transparent bottom allowing swimmers to look all the way down to the ground. “Once you swim off, you can look right down. It will be like flying,” Brian Eckersley, director of Eckersley O’Callaghan, told CNN. The pool is 10 feet deep and contains nearly 415 tons of water. See the pic HERE.

Strangers Find Out They Knew Each Other
A pair of students at a Virginia university struck up a conversation on a bus and soon discovered they lived at the same orphanage in China 15 years earlier. Ally Cole, a sophomore at Liberty University in Lynchburg, sat down next to freshman Ruby Wierzbicki on a bus crossing the school’s campus and the two students struck up a conversation. The women discovered they had both been adopted from China, and got out their phones to compare pictures when they discovered they were from the same city, Jinan. The photos showed the same orphanage. “We held the photos side by side on our phones and we realized that everything matched, and we knew that it had to be the same place,” Wierzbicki said in a Liberty University news release. The students determined they had been adopted one week apart, at the ages of 6 and 4, and even had photos showing them together at the facility.

6 Gaslighting Phrases People Say To Manipulate You

- “That never happened.”
Gaslighters will do or say something abusive and then deny it ever happened to sow seeds of self-doubt in the victim, said licensed clinical social worker Lisa Ferentz, who specializes in treating trauma.
“The victim starts questioning her instincts and relies more and more on the ‘reality’ that gets created and manipulated by the abuser,” she said. “It also heightens a sense of dependency on the abuser.”
- “You’re too sensitive.”
If you try to express your hurt or disappointment over something the abusive person said — perhaps a cruel remark they made about your appearance in front of your friends that they insist everyone knew was just a funny “joke” — they’ll minimize your feelings by telling you you’re overly sensitive or making a big deal out of nothing. The intent is to make you feel stupid for even trying to stand up for yourself.
“Once an abusive partner has broken down the victim’s ability to trust their own perceptions, the victim is more likely to put up with the abusive behavior and stay in the relationship,” Engel said.
- “You’re crazy — and other people think so, too.”
Over time, a gaslighter’s lies and distortions of reality make the victim legitimately question their own sanity. The abusive person uses this to their advantage.
“Once their confidence has been shaken, the gaslighter ‘confirms’ the victim’s worst fear: They really must be crazy,” Ferentz said.
An abuser may also try to convince your friends and family that you’re mentally unstable in order to discredit you and create distance between you and your loved ones.
“Gaslighters also deliberately spread that propaganda to the victim’s friends and family in an attempt to further isolate them and get others to align with the abuser,” Ferentz said. “This decreases the likelihood that the victim’s stories will be believed and disconnects them from the resources that would make it possible for them to leave.”
- “You have a terrible memory.”
“We all have moments with a lapse of recalling details of a particular conversation,” Thomas said. “That’s normal. However, a gaslighter will focus on making the victim doubt their memory about a multitude of situations. They do this because getting a victim to question themselves is at the core of gaslighting. When a victim no longer trusts their assessments, the abuser is in complete control.”
- “I’m sorry you think that I hurt you.”
On its face, this might appear to be an apology, but it’s not. Rather, it’s a way for the abuser to deflect responsibility for any pain they’ve caused and instead blame you for misinterpreting the situation, said clinical psychologist B. Nilaja Green.
“This can result in one partner distrusting their own judgment and their own reactions,” she said. “They may really begin to believe that they are ‘too sensitive,’ or ‘irrational,’ which can lead to them relying on the other person’s interpretation of events as more accurate or reasonable.”
- “You should have known how I would react.”
This is another case of the gaslighter trying to shift responsibility off of themselves and onto the victim. Instead of being accountable for their own behavior, they’ll pin it on you.
“Gaslighting involves twisting facts so they can avoid personal ownership of their behaviors,” Thomas said. “By telling the victim they should have known better, the gaslighter places the blame on the victim for not only speaking up but also the abuser’s response.”
What To Do If Someone Is Gaslighting You
Therapists offer advice on what to do if you suspect you’re being gaslit.
Depending how long you’ve been trapped in this toxic dynamic, it may be “excruciatingly difficult” to pull yourself out, psychoanalyst Robin Stern previously wrote for Vice. That said, it is possible.
“The antidote to gaslighting is becoming more self-aware,” Engel said. “The better you know yourself, the better you will be at fending off inaccurate statements about yourself.”
Keep paying attention to your gut.
Gaslighting erodes your confidence to the point that you no longer trust your instincts about a situation. But try to stay in touch with whatever you’re feeling; those emotional signals offer important clues that you don’t want to ignore.
“When you feel that tension in the pit of your stomach, or a sense of unease with a situation, don’t immediately dismiss that feeling because someone else thinks you should,” Green said. “Investigate what this sensation could be telling you and get more information before making your next move.”
Hold on to texts and emails.
That way you have a tangible record of their behavior, which “is helpful when combating the confusion created by a gaslighter,” Thomas said.
You can also write down notes from your conversations to help you separate fact from fiction.
“Where is the conversation veering off from reality into the other person’s view?” Stern wrote. “Then after you look at the dialogue, write down how you felt. Look for signs of repeated denial of your experience.”
Consider calling out their behavior.
“Let the other person know you see the manipulation game,” Thomas said.
For example, if your partner accuses you of being overly sensitive, you can say, “No, I’m not too sensitive. I’m reacting the way anyone would to the way you treat me or the way you act,” Engel suggested. Or, “No, I’m not too sensitive, the problem is you are not sensitive enough.”
But know that even in doing so, their behavior isn’t likely to change.
Just because you call them out doesn’t mean they’re going to validate your point of view or suddenly see the error in their ways. For this reason, Ferentz said she doesn’t recommend trying to reason with a gaslighter.
“[They] typically have no intention of changing, so waiting for them to take ownership, genuinely apologize and change their ways will probably only lead to more abuse and make it less likely that the victim will be able to leave,” she said.
Check in with a trusted friend, family member or a therapist.
Ask a close friend or relative how they would feel if their partner treated or spoke to them the way yours does. See if they’ve noticed you behaving differently since you’ve been with this person.
