Sumner Redstone Dies

Sumner Redstone, who turned a family-owned chain of drive-in movie theaters into a major U.S. media empire, has died at the age of 97, his company said Wednesday.  Redstone, who was formerly executive chairman of CBS and Viacom, died on Tuesday.  “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sumner M. Redstone, the self-made businessman, philanthropist and World War II veteran who built one of the largest collections of media assets in the world,” National Amusements said in a statement.  Through his company, Redstone controlled 80 percent of the voting stock of Viacom and CBS. His net worth was estimated at $3 billion in May.  “He was a force of nature and fierce competitor, who leaves behind a profound legacy in both business and philanthropy,” said ViacomCBS CEO and President Bob Bakish. “[We] will remember Sumner for his unparalleled passion to win, his endless intellectual curiosity, and his complete dedication to the company.”

Why Meghan Markle Pulled Out Of Pippa Middleton’s Wedding

Meghan Markle pulled out of Pippa Middleton and James Matthews’ wedding out of fear she would “create a media circus.”  The claim is being made in the book “Finding Freedom,” written by royal reporters Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand. Numerous palace insiders came forward to the two journalists and detailed what led to Meghan and Harry’s departure as senior members of the British royal family.  The U.K.’s DailyMail reported Middleton and her mother Carole Middleton “reluctantly” invited the her to the May 2017 celebration but “privately harbored concerns” that her appearance with Prince Harry would “overshadow the main event.”  “Meghan put careful thought into her outfit, leaning heavily on Jessica Mulroney to pull together an ensemble that was stylish without being splash when walking into church with Harry,” the authors wrote, as quoted by the outlet.  The authors alleged that she ultimately pulled out of attending “at the last minute” after a newspaper article published the headline: “It’s Meghan v Pippa in the…Wedding of the Rears.”
********That’s all it takes?? One snarky headline in the paper, and she runs for the hills??

Jon Bon Jovi Putting On Concert

Jon Bon Jovi is having a virtual concert tomorrow (Friday).  He also gave an update on loved ones who were diagnosed with the coronavirus.  He said of his son Jacob’s case, “It was really mild; it was really early on. It was an intestinal version of it.” He added that Jacob “fully recovered and quickly.”  His bandmates also contracted the disease. “David Bryan had it really bad… Everett Bradley — he, too, had it really bad,” Jon said. “We’ve seen a lot of people that we know, lives have been lost… This is nothing to mess around with… Wear your mask. Do the right thing, ’cause it’s real.”  Jon’s summer tour was canceled and his album is on hold. He insisted, “These are the sacrifices that have to be made right now… Eventually, we will get back to it. I don’t know when, to be honest. I don’t think so for some time… A rock show really can’t happen without a crowd.”  Explaining the premise behind his virtual show, he said, “I have been very involved throughout this COVID crisis,” by working at his community restaurant JBJ Soul Kitchen, opening a food bank, and encouraging others with the song “Do What You Can.”

Meghan and Harry Secretly Move

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have a new place in Santa Barbara, Calif., after stints of living in Los Angeles and Vancouver, Canada.  “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex moved into their family home in July of this year,” a spokesperson said. “They have settled into the quiet privacy of their community since their arrival and hope that this will be respected for their neighbors, as well as them as a family.”  A source says that they hope this is where their son, Archie can grow up and lead “as normal a life as possible.”   This is the third big move for the royal duo since 2019. After the couple bid farewell to senior royal duties and vowed to split their time living in the United Kingdom and North America, Meghan and Harry jumped across the pond to Vancouver, Canada.  In March, it was revealed that they relocated to the duchess’ hometown of Los Angeles where they reportedly were living in Tyler Perry’s $18 million mansion.

Ellen’s DJ Breaks Silence

Stephen “tWitch” Boss, the set DJ of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” broke his silence on widespread allegations of toxicity at the talk show, claiming there’s “love” behind the scenes.  “We can’t speak too much legally about it, but I’ll say this, there’s been love,” he told Us Weekly. “Obviously there’s some things to address, but from my standpoint and from countless others, there’s been love. I’ll just leave it at that until there’s a time where we can address more publicly.  “There’s been love and there will continue to be love.”  He is the latest celebrity to come forward and defend the host, joining Kevin Hart, Scooter Braun, Katy Perry and more. But stars such as Brad Garrett, Lea Thompson, Wayne Dupre and her former show DJ, Tony Okungbowa, have supported the claims that she created a toxic work environment.  DeGeneres’ wife, Portia de Rossi, claims she is “doing great” amid the backlash and show investigation. Perhaps it’s because in her apology statement she blamed her show’s producers.

Woman Pic Left Off Of Drivers License

A Tennessee woman was left surprised and confused when she received her new driver’s license in the mail and noticed something missing from the photo — herself.  Jade Dodd of Hickman County said she renewed her license online, but when the ID card arrived in the mail she quickly noticed it bore a photo of an empty chair where her face should be.  Dodd said she visited a Department of Motor Vehicles office to get the error corrected.  “The lady at the DMV did not really believe me when I was like ‘hey, I need my license fixed,'” Dodd told WKRN-TV. “Then, she looked it up in the system and goes, ‘Oh, I need my manager for this.'”   Wes Moster, a DMV spokesman, said the error resulted from the wrong photo being saved to Dodd’s profile.  “When the customer recently renewed her driver license online, she received an image of a chair because that was the last picture taken on file,” Moster told CNN. “When the Department was made aware of her situation, we immediately made things right with the customer and provided her with a license with her actual photo and have addressed this situation internally.”

Last Blockbuster Put On Airbnb

The world’s last Blockbuster video store in Oregon is being listed on Airbnb for a series of 1990s-themed movie sleepover parties.  Sandi Harding, who has been store manager at the 20-year-old store since 2004, listed the Blockbuster in Bend on the accommodation-finding site for up to four people to stay on three available dates in September.  Harding had a living room set up inside the store, complete with a large 1990s-era TV, a VCR and a plethora of tapes.  “It’s our 20th year as a Blockbuster, we were hoping to celebrate that this year, but with Covid throwing a wrench into everybody’s plans, we were really excited to be able to pull this off,” Harding said.  She said the Airbnb listing is a way to give back to the community that has kept the video store in business while all of the other Blockbusters have gone bust. “It’s only $4 for the night, a penny more than what you would spend for a new release,” Harding said.

Escaped Monkey

A monkey escaped its enclosure at a zoo in Ireland and led zookeepers riding golf carts on a chase through the facility before being recaptured.  Visitors to the Fota Wildlife Park in Cork said the zoo was put on temporary lockdown Tuesday when a monkey escaped from its closure and ran through crowds of onlookers while being pursued by zookeepers in golf carts.  A zoo spokesman confirmed the exits were blocked while staff pursued the primate, a male roloway monkey named Valentino.  “Valentino was continually under observation by the animal rangers and was quickly coaxed into a secure holding pen and returned safely to his island habitat. At no time was he in danger, or a threat to any visitors or members of the public,” the spokesman told CorkBeo.com.

A LIST FOR THURSDAY

7 Of The Weirdest Products People Have Been Buying During The Pandemic

Huffington Post

  1. Roller skates

With lockdown orders in effect around the country, antsy Americans have been looking for new hobbies to occupy their time and excuses to go outside. For many, roller skating turned out to be a perfect solution.

Google searches for ”roller skates″ spiked considerably in May and retailers suddenly struggled to keep up with the demand, The Washington Post reported. California-based Moxi Roller Skates faced 12 times its usual sales and developed a massive backlog of orders, prompting its manufacturer to open a second factory to fulfill them all, according to founder Michelle Steilen. Impala Rollerskates’ pastel fade skates sold out the same day they were released during the lockdown, chief executive Matt Hill told the Post.

Because skates became just about impossible to find in stock, many consumers turned to secondhand markets. Online marketplace Mercari, for example, has seen an average of more than 21,000 searches for roller skates per week over the last six weeks ― an 892% volume increase since the pandemic ― with more than 300 new listings for roller skates added weekly.

  1. RVs

As the pandemic raged into summer, Americans with a travel bug were desperate for a way to sightsee while maintaining social distancing. Recreational vehicles have been selling like crazy (even yours truly bought a used one). In fact, RV dealers saw as much as a 170% increase in sales for the month of May compared with the same time last year, according to the RV Industry Association.

Travelers who don’t have the money to buy haven’t let that stop them. RV rentals also surged, especially ahead of Memorial Day weekend. RV rental site RVshare reported a 1,000% increase in nationwide bookings since April 1.

  1. Guns

Pandemic spending hasn’t been all fun and games. The number of firearms background checks compiled by the FBI ticked upward beginning in March and reached a record 3.9 million in June.

There are a few reasons for this heightened interest in gun ownership. It’s typical for gun sales to increase around election time. And, considering that Democratic hopeful Joe Biden supports greater restrictions on firearms, some opponents of gun control may want to stock up on firepower while they still can. Add in civil unrest around the country and a general sense of fear as the coronavirus remains uncontained and many people are feeling the need for heat.

  1. Yeast

For those doing their best to avoid busy public spaces, the grocery store is one of the top places to steer clear of. But grocery delivery services can be pricey, and sending an Instacart or GrubHub worker to do your dirty work may feel unethical.

It’s one reason why so many Americans have picked up bread-making during the pandemic. Sales of baking ingredients in general have soared, but dry yeast has been especially hard to come by. Yeast sales were up by 647% at the end of March, compared with the same week last year, according to Nielsen. In fact, yeast experienced the fastest sales growth over a seven-day period than any other grocery product tracked by Nielsen.

  1. Bidets

In many homes outside of the U.S., a bidet in the bathroom is commonplace. But here, bidets are finding newfound popularity following the toilet paper shortages that marked the beginning of the pandemic.

Google searches for bidets spiked in mid-March, while companies that sell bidets experienced a boom. Jason Ojalvo, CEO of Tushy, told Yahoo in April that sales were 10 times higher than they were pre-pandemic.

  1. Sweatpants

All dressed up with nowhere to go? If you’ve been working from home, avoiding bars and concerts, and generally lounging around the house all day, there’s no need to go out and buy new outfits. Not surprisingly, U.S. clothing sales dropped 79% in April. Sweatpants, on the other hand, are having their day. Purchases were up 80% over the same period the previous year, according to The New York Times. No doubt, many of those comfy clothes purchases were the subject of equally trendy tie-dye projects.

  1. Scented candles

If after months of stay-at-home orders your home is starting to smell extra lived-in, you’re not the only one in search of smell-good products. Candle sales have shot up during the pandemic. Net-a-Porter, for instance, reported a 130% year-over-year increase in mid-March.
