Take A Course On Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift’s songwriting is to be the subject of a new literature course at a Texas university.  The course – The Taylor Swift Songbook – will fill a blank space in the line-up at the University of Texas at Austin (UTA) from this autumn.  It means her songs will be “read” alongside other UK and US literary giants such as Chaucer, Shakespeare, Coleridge, Keats, and other artists students will hope to know all too well by the end of their studies.  The course will use “the songwriting of pop music icon Taylor Swift to introduce literary critical reading and research methods-basic skills for work in English literature and other humanities disciplines,” according to a description on the UTA website.  “Focusing on Swift’s music and the cultural contexts in which it and her career are situated, we’ll consider frameworks for understanding her work, such as poetic form, style, and history among various matters and theoretical issues important to contextualisation as we practice close and in-depth reading, evaluating secondary sources, and building strong arguments,” it adds.

King Kong Live Action Coming

A live-action King Kong series is in the early stages of development for Disney+.  Deadline first reported on Tuesday that the project will be a serialized adventure saga exploring the origins of King Kong, and will be heavily based on the King Kong screenplay from Merian C. Cooper, who directed the original 1933 film.  The series will also reportedly take inspiration from a slate of new novelizations from artist Joe DeVito, produced in conjunction with Cooper’s estate.  “King Kong is a serialized action-adventure drama that brings the classic monster story into the modern age, with a return to Skull Island and the dawn of a new Kong,” Deadline said of the series.  Disney+ has not made any official comment on the show, although the news was corroborated by multiple other industry outlets, including Variety and The Hollywood Reporter.

HBO Bringing Back “Curb”

HBO announced Tuesday that it renewed Curb Your Enthusiasm for a 12th season. No production or release date was announced.  Larry David created and stars as himself. David joked about playing the role.  “He speaks six languages, brines his own pickles, and spearheads a national movement to install a bidet in every home,” David said in a statement. “I’ve also been told from numerous sources that he is the most generous of lovers.”  Season 11 aired in the fall of 2021. Storylines involved Larry launching a new TV show, but having to cast the inexperienced niece (Keyla Monterroso Mejia) of a dead burglar in a role.  The fictional Larry also battled a Santa Monica, Calif., ordinance that mandated a five foot fence around his pool. Tracey Ullman guest starred as a city council member.  Jeff Garlin, Susie Essman, J.B. Smoove, Cheryl Hines, Richard Lewis, Vince Vaughn, and Ted Danson remain listed as cast members. Garlin co-stars and executive produces, with Jeff Schaffer. Laura Streicher and Jennifer Corey are co-EPs.

Anne Heche Cremated

Anne Heche was cremated and her ashes were placed in a mausoleum at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery nearly two weeks after she was declared brain-dead at a Los Angeles-area hospital from injuries suffered in a fiery car crash on Aug. 5. She was 53 years old.   In a statement to the Associated Press, Heche’s son, Homer Laffoon, said he and his brother, Atlas Tupper, “are convinced our Mom would love the site we have chosen for her; it’s beautiful, serene and she will be among her Hollywood peers.”  The cemetery has in recent years become a cultural hub for film screenings, musical performances and festivals.  Her death was ruled an accident last week, according to a report released by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner.

Stallone and Flavin Divorcing

Sylvester Stallone and his wife, Jennifer Flavin, are headed for divorce.  Flavin filed for divorce Aug. 19 in West Palm Beach, Fla.  Stallone and Flavin married in May 1997 and have three children together, daughters Sophia, 25, Sistine, 24, and Scarlet, 20.  Stallone also has a son, Seargeoh, with his ex-wife Sasha Czack. Sage, his son with Starlin Wright, died at age 36 in 2012.  Us Weekly confirmed the split and said Stallone recently covered up his tattoo of Flavin’s face on his bicep.  “I love my family. We are amicably and privately addressing these personal issues,” Stallone said in a statement through his rep.  Court documents show that Flavin believes Stallone is hiding marital assets, according to TMZ. Flavin is seeking exclusive domain of the couple’s Palm Beach, Fla., home during the divorce proceedings and plans to restore her maiden name, Flavin.  Stallone and Flavin celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary in May.

Prince Harry May Delay Book Release

Prince Harry’s memoir may be pushed back to 2023, according to publishing sources.  The renegade prince’s book was due to be released in time for the holidays — the hottest time of the year for book sales — and would have gone head to head with Michelle Obama’s latest book, “The Light We Carry: Overcoming in Uncertain Times,” out November 15.  Now, one source in the know said that “things are up in the air” for the pub date.  Industry chatter has been heating up as Harry’s book is still not available on Amazon or elsewhere for all-important pre-sales.  While another publishing source confirmed there had been talk of a November publication date, they added: “I have heard that Harry has some truth bombs in his book that he is debating on whether to include or not.  “So this [push back is] no surprise if he needs more time to work on the book.”

One Last Thing-Keith Urban-(People)

The country star, 54, is currently on his world tour, “The Speed Of Now.”

Last moment of self-care-

My whole life is a perpetual road trip, but we just recently got a cold plunge [immersion tub], so I jumped into that.  Man, that’s a commitment!

Last time I felt like a kid-

I try to stay as loose as possible before I go onstage, even though I come out swinging.  During sound checks, I’ll go flying around the arena on my Razor Crazy Cart.  Those things are insane.

Last class I took-

We did a full CPR course that took five hours.  I learned that it’s now 30 compressions for every two breaths.  And that the song “Another One Bites the Dust” [by the band Queen] is the ideal tempo to do it to.  Just don’t sing it out loud..

Laundry Chore Turns Into Lottery Win

A North Carolina man who won a $250,000 prize from a scratch-off lottery ticket said he only bought the $5 ticket because he needed quarters to do laundry.  Juan Garcia, 22, of Durham, told North Carolina Education Lottery officials he stopped at University Market in Durham because he needed quarters to do laundry.  Garcia bought a $5 Mega Bucks Limited Edition ticket to receive his change, and ended up scratching off a $250,000 prize.  “I was in disbelief,” Garcia said. “I kept seeing zeros.”  Garcia said his winnings will help him care for his 6-month-old daughter.  “This is definitely a huge step toward our one-day dream home,” he said.

Message In A Bottle Found After Many Years

Workers restoring a school in Australia discovered a message in a bottle stashed in the school’s spire by one of the carpenters who originally constructed the structure in 1935.  Junction Park State School in Annerley, a suburb of Brisbane, Queensland, said Queensland Heritage Restorations workers found the bottle while working on restoring the spire.  The note, dated Oct. 12, 1935, was authored by then-16-year-old apprentice carpenter Gordon Benson.  Benson wrote he hoped the note would find its way to his children or grandchildren.   The school hosted a ceremony Tuesday where Transport Minister Mark Bailey presented the note to Geoffrey Benson and Marilyn Blundell, two of Benson’s five children.  “Once realizing it was written by my father, it wasn’t a surprise,” Geoffrey Benson told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. “Dad always thought about his family, and his children, and the future of his children.

7 Red Flags To Watch Out For When Hiring A Babysitter

HUFFINGTON POST

  1. They reschedule their interview several times.

Life happens: Something comes up unexpectedly and plans need to be changed. But if a potential sitter cancels and reschedules your interviews again and again, it shows a lack of reliability, said child care expert Cady Henry, who is also a former nanny and babysitter.

“You want a responsible babysitter who knows the importance of managing their time and priorities. If they aren’t doing that for the interview, there’s a high likelihood they won’t be doing it once they’re hired,” she told HuffPost.

  1. Their communication is spotty.

Strong communication is key in any partnership — including the one you have with your child care provider. If they are flaky or unresponsive during the interview process, it could be a sign of communication issues moving forward.

“You’re bestowing your trust in an individual to care for your child while you are away,” child care expert Hassanatou Barry, founder of The Babysitter Guru and a former babysitter herself, told HuffPost. “Therefore, the communication must be consistent from the start.”

During the outreach stage, she recommends paying attention to things like how fast the candidate responds to your inquiry about their availability, what their preferred mode of communication is (e.g. email, phone or text) and whether or not they follow up with you after the initial interview.

“You can tell a lot from a candidate’s work style based on their communication,” Barry said. “If they lack the above and you have an odd pit in your stomach that this may lead to a bigger issue down the line, be cordial and politely inform the candidate you will not continue with their application.”

  1. They seem checked out during the interview.

The babysitter doesn’t necessarily have to be the chattiest Cathy on the block. But they should still be engaged in the conversation, Henry said.

You want someone who answers your questions thoughtfully and has some questions of their own, too, that show they’re interested in getting to know your family.

“You want to hire someone who can effectively communicate with you — who can tell you what happened while you were away, feel comfortable bringing up any concerns or questions, and staying in touch overall,” Henry added. “Open communication with your babysitter will give you peace of mind while you’re away.”

  1. They lack basic child care skills.

Changing diapers, consoling a crying baby, identifying choking hazards (and, ideally, knowing basic first aid and CPR) are all skills a babysitter should possess.

“Sure, you may need to teach a babysitter a few things specific to your family’s lifestyle or home. But you want a babysitter with some level of experience and basic child care skills,” Henry said. “Otherwise, you will spend a lot of time worrying about the well-being of your child while you’re gone. A babysitter should provide peace of mind, not add more worry to your life.”

  1. Your child doesn’t seem to get along with this person.

When you’re meeting a candidate in person, be sure your kid is there, too. That way you can watch them interact and gauge your child’s reaction.

“I encourage all parents during the interview process to allow an in-person 30 minutes to an hour session with the candidate and your child,” Barry said.

Pay close attention to your child’s behavior around the prospective sitter, as kids may pick up on things adults do not. Is your child acting out more than usual? Do they seem uncharacteristically shy or avoidant? Those could be signs that it’s not the right fit.

“If your child becomes temper tantrum-y when the candidate arrives, hides behind furniture to avoid eye contact with them or suddenly begins throwing objects to hurt the candidate — then you should further evaluate your decision in hiring them,” Barry said.

  1. They’re evasive when you ask about their references — or their references don’t check out.

A sitter should be willing to provide you with a few references, including a couple of families they’ve worked with in a caregiving capacity in the recent past.

If they give you written reference letters, you should also request phone numbers so you do a follow-up call to get more information.

“For each reference you speak with, please have a list of questions written in advance to ask,” Barry said. Asking some situational questions about how the sitter handled real-life incidents or circumstances “is always a plus,” she added.

Consider it a red flag if the babysitter avoids questions about their former employers, won’t provide their contact information or if their references seem confused as to why you’re calling or don’t have much to say.

Barry also recommends doing an additional layer of vetting with anyone you’re strongly considering hiring — like getting a background check from a reputable company.

According to Care.com, you should tell the sitter you’re planning to run a routine background check on final candidates so they can authorize the screening. If they refuse, then this probably isn’t the right person to care for your kids.

  1. You have a bad gut feeling about them.

When you think about leaving your child with this person, do you get a pit in your stomach? Even if the sitter looks good on paper, don’t ignore that sensation — it may be your parental intuition trying to tell you something’s amiss.

“In addition to properly screening a caregiver and monitoring the quality of care children receive, parents should never disregard their gut feeling about a provider,” Michelle LaRowe, founder of NannyTraining.com, told Care.com. “If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t.”
