Royal Family Wishes Meghan A Happy Birthday
Queen Elizabeth II, Prince William and Kate Middleton and Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles have wished Megan Markle a happy 40th birthday on social media. “Wishing The Duchess of Sussex a very Happy Birthday today!” Elizabeth’s royal family Twitter account said alongside photos of Markle standing with the queen and holding her son Archie Harrison. William and Middleton posted a similar message on Twitter next to a photo of Markle sitting down and wearing a lei during her tour of Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific in 2018. Prince Harry can be seen attempting to juggle in the background of Meghan Markle’s 40th birthday video with Melissa McCarthy, during which they promote her new philanthropic venture with her and Harry’s foundation, Archewell. At first, Harry stumbles with the balls and appears to fall over in the backyard of the couple’s California home. But then, he succeeds in his attempt and runs off the screen in excitement. In her first appearance since giving birth to daughter Lilibet Diana in June, Markle asks McCarthy to enlist activists, athletes and celebrities from around the world to spend 40 minutes mentoring women re-entering the workforce amid the COVID-19 pandemic. “Because I’m turning 40, I’m asking 40 friends to donate 40 minutes of their time to help mentor a woman who is mobilizing back into the workforce,” she explains to McCarthy, who’s dressed like she’s going to a royal party and sipping tea, in the video.

Bo Derek Secretly Married
Actor John Corbett has revealed that he and partner Bo Derek married at a secret ceremony in December. “Around Christmas time we got married. Bo and I got married,” Corbett told Jerry O’Connell, host of CBS’ “The Talk,” on Tuesday. “I noticed your ring, and I was going to say something, but not on live television, but wow. Congratulations,” O’Connell responded. Corbett said the interview was the first time either he or Bo had mentioned their marriage in public. “We’re pretty private people, we didn’t make an announcement,” he said. The pair have been in a relationship for two decades but decided to marry in the pandemic year. “After 20 years, we decided to get married. We didn’t want 2020 to be that thing that everybody looks back at and hated,” said Corbett. “We thought let’s get one nice thing out of it.” Corbett is best known for his role as Aidan Shaw, Carrie’s furniture maker ex-fiancé on “Sex and the City.”

Ashton Kutcher In New Rom Com With Reese Witherspoon
Ashton Kutcher has joined the cast of the new film Your Place or Mine. Netflix confirmed Tuesday that he will star with Reese Witherspoon in the upcoming romantic comedy. It’s based on an original script by Aline Brosh McKenna, who will make her feature directorial debut with the film. The film follows two best friends (Kutcher and Witherspoon) living on opposite coasts, who swap homes for a week and see their whole lives change. Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine will co-produce the project with Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan’s Aggregate Films. Lauren Neustadter will also produce for Hello Sunshine, along with McKenna for Lean Machine. Kutcher most recently starred in the Netflix series The Ranch, which ended in January 2020 after four seasons. Witherspoon stars on the Apple TV+ series The Morning Show and will reprise the role of Elle Woods in Legally Blonde 3.

Many Bees Removed From Wall
A couple who recently purchased a Pennsylvania farmhouse said they had to pay $12,000 to have 450,000 bees removed from inside the walls. Sara Weaver said she and her husband bought the 1872 farmhouse in Skippack without conducting an inspection because they had been searching for a home in the area and wanted to move quickly when they saw the house on the market. Weaver said they bought the house in the winter, so the bees weren’t active at the time. “On the seller’s disclosure it said ‘bees in wall,’ and that was it and I think because one, we didn’t see them and two, we were just so floored that we actually found land in the [school] district that was within our price range that I didn’t really ask any questions about those bees,” she told CNN. The Weavers hired Allan Lattanzi, a general contractor and professional beekeeper, to get rid of the insects in the walls. The beekeeper said he removed an estimated 450,000 bees, comprising three colonies, from the walls of the home. He said the bees appear to have been living inside the house for about 35 years.

Bear Breaks Into Car
A California sheriff’s office shared security camera footage of the moment a black bear opened the door of an employee’s vehicle while it was parked in a courthouse parking lot. The Sierra County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post that an office communications-correction officer found a back door of her car was not fully latched when she was preparing to go home from the Sierra County Courthouse in Downville in the early morning. “Knowing the door had not been ajar when she went to work the previous evening, she took a look through the security footage and discovered the culprit,” the post said. The video shows a bear opening the door and peering inside the car in an apparent search for food. “Thankfully, this bear found nothing of interest,” the sheriff’s office said.

Opossum Tangled In Telephone Cables
Police in Colombia climbed to the roof of a building to rescue an opossum spotted tangled in cables at the top of a utility pole. The National Police of Colombia said officers were called to a utility pole in Narino on a report of a tangled opossum dangling from the telephone cables at the top of the pole. Police climbed to the roof of an adjacent building, where they were able to reach the marsupial and disentangle it from the cables. “Once it was confirmed to be out of danger, it was released in its natural habitat,” police wrote in a Facebook post. Cat Invades Yankees Game
A cat provided some eighth-inning entertainment during the Yankees-Orioles game in New York when it ran out onto the field and evaded capture by the grounds crew. The crowd at the Monday night game at Yankee Stadium erupted into cheers during the eighth inning when the cat darted out onto the warning track with crew members in hot pursuit. The cat led the workers on a chase through the outfield, at one point jumping onto the outfield wall to escape its pursuers. Orioles outfielder Cedric Mullins said the cat had been spotted earlier in the visiting team’s dugout. “We saw [the cat] in the dugout earlier in the game, just chilling there, so we let him be. Next thing I know, I heard all the fans cheering. I didn’t know what was going on,” Mullins told MLB.com. The chase came to a close when the cat ran through an open gate into the stands. 9 Tips on Working Multiple Jobs

- Make Friends at All Your Jobs
Avoid the temptation to punch in, do your job, punch out and repeat.
Brandner: “I was pretty surprised to learn that there are actually a few hidden perks to having more than one place of work. The major one is having more than one new circle of friends. Obviously you’re not going to be best friends with everyone, but making an effort to develop and maintain friendships is a good idea. If you feel you have a support system, or at least someone you can laugh with, your shifts seem shorter and more enjoyable.”
- Location is Everything
When you look for a full-time job, one of the first things you keep in mind is proximity to your home. Of course, if you have a work from home job, you are always close to your work space.
Depending on your schedule and if you are working outside the home, your second job should be physically near your first job. (Two work from home jobs? You’ve got this covered.)
If you bust your gas budget because you’re driving all around town, your second income becomes pointless. If you are in a city where you use public transit, make a point to check if the job you have in mind is on your same bus or train route.
- Let Your Employers Know About One Another
Brandner: “When I first got my second job I felt awkward telling both my managers that I was also working somewhere else. I felt like they would feel like I wasn’t able to give them both 100%. For a while it almost felt like I was cheating on both of them. When I eventually did let them know, they both actually admired my hustle, and ended up being much more receptive and understanding when I had to make slight schedule changes.”
- When You’re Sick, Do NOT Power Through It
While this tip applies to people with one job, it is especially important for people who deal with twice the same amount of interaction.
If the past year and a half has taught us anything, it is that we need to stay the hell away from other people when we are sick. In the long run, it will not be worth ignoring your symptoms in exchange for that day’s wages, when you are risking exacerbating your own health as well as others’.
If you are working two jobs, you are putting in twice the amount of energy, which will wear you down even more. Be honest with your employers, and they will probably be grateful. Remember, it is illegal for someone to fire you for calling in sick.
- Normalize Power Napping
Tuverson: “I copied this from the kids I look after. If they get home from school at 1:15 and we need to leave the house for swim lessons at 2:10, it is crucial that they get some rest or lest they be grumpy and lethargic for their poor teacher.
“Sometimes I have similar amounts of time before I need to get going for my next job. I used to think that this only allowed me to scroll through my phone and watch half of a ‘Law and Order’ episode. When I still couldn’t stop yawning, I Googled some tips and started power napping between shifts. It’s been a game changer.”
Tuverson says the key is napping between 10 and 20 minutes. She swears by a little caffeine before the nap which will kick in after you wake up, providing you stick to the short nap.
- Plan and Prep Your Meals
If you are in your car several times throughout the day, rushing to make it to your next job and then also rushing to finally get home, there is the inevitable temptation to pull over for fast food.
While this is okay once in a while, the initial comfort and convenience of not having to cook will soon backfire, making you (and your wallet) feel worse. Set aside time to prep and prepare meals (and snacks for those 15 minute breaks!) that are easy, cheap, and delicious.
- Remember the Reason for Working a Second Job
Tuverson: “Even with two jobs, it’s not exactly like I’m living in the lap of luxury. But, I am now able to afford a mini-vacation that I would not have been able to otherwise. When I’m on the bus for the third time that day and I have spit up on my blouse (and I’ve forgotten if it’s from a human or animal), I open my wallet and see some pictures I’ve printed out of things I’ll experience on my trip.”
She says that her coworkers look at photos of apartments, cars, even engagement rings to keep their eyes on the prize. The aspirational photos are a good pick-me-up, she says, that reminds them why they are working a second job.
- Commit to Something That Brings You Joy
Even when you have one job, it may seem like all you have the energy to do after work is eat and go to sleep. On a good day, you could summon the chutzpah to grab a drink or some dinner, but even this can seem like a stretch sometimes.
Still, it is important to have other consistent things in your schedule besides just working.
For example, you could join a book group dedicated to your favorite genre. Read on your lunch breaks and on your transit commute, then spend an hour a month chatting with new friends about your thoughts.
Not only does this increase your social circle and offer an escape, but it also exercises your brain. The Penny Hoarder actually has our own book club, and you can find dozens of others online or in person through your Meetup.com, Goodreads, or your local independent bookstores and libraries.
- Don’t Get Discouraged
It can take anywhere from 18 to 254 days for a person to form a new habit and an average of 66 days for a new behavior to become automatic.
Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t immediately get in the groove of working two jobs with differing protocols, expectations and managerial styles.
Any half-decent supervisor will cut you some slack when you start. If you find that you are still having trouble adjusting to a new routine after a couple months or so, let Human Resources know and they can give you some more specific tips.
