The Queen’s Inner Circle

Queen Elizabeth II may be largely confined to Windsor Castle, but palace sources insist the reigning monarch isn’t lonely.   She lost Prince Philip, in April – just short of his 100th birthday. Several close friends have also passed away in recent months.  In the latest issue of PEOPLE Royals, out on Friday, a source revealed that the queen has an intimate “bubble” of people that she’s closely connected to.  “The queen can go from being magisterial to chatty with those she trusts,” said the royal source. “She has good judgment once she trusts people – and once she does, it is very easy.”  According to the outlet, Elizabeth began having friends over in Windsor during the summer for lunches and dinners. They also enjoyed watching TV late into the evening. Lady Susan Hussey, Lady Annabel Whitehead, Lady Elizabeth Leeming, Prince Charles’s former nanny Mabel Anderson and Susan Rhodes are all reported to be part of the queen’s inner circle.  The source also shared that Elizabeth is rarely alone and is often accompanied by close aide Angela Kelly and footman Paul Whybrew. Palace staffers also work tirelessly to ensure the palace is “a cheerful place” for the queen.  In addition, she receives regular visits from her son Prince Edward and his wife Sophie, Countess of Wessex as the couple lives a short drive away. Her youngest son Prince Andrew also lives nearby and reportedly makes frequent visits.

Holly Madison Dishes On First Night With Hugh Hefner

Holly Madison is getting candid about what it was really like being one of Hugh Hefner’s many girlfriends.  She recently appeared on the “Power: Hugh Hefner” podcast where she recalled being invited to spend a night out with the magazine publisher. According to her, she was hoping to be invited to live in the Playboy Mansion because one of Hefner’s girlfriends had recently left.  “I didn’t really know what went on with them sexually,” she claimed. “I knew there must be something and I was prepared for that. I wasn’t prepared for what would eventually happen.” Madison claimed that after spending some time in a club that night, she went back to the mansion with Hefner, along with some other women they were with.  “I wasn’t necessarily expecting to have sex that night,” she said. “I thought it would be more of a first date – even though obviously it’s not a very traditional first date. I thought it would be more the type of thing where I saw what happened, saw what was going on. If I wasn’t comfortable with it, I wouldn’t have to do anything and I could make my decision on whether I wanted to come back for date no. 2 or not.” She says that the night didn’t go as she imagined. Instead, Madison claim she and Hefner did have sex.  “I definitely was not expecting to be the first one to go that night, but I was wasted,” said Madison. “He was literally pushed on top of me. And after it happened, I was just mortified and embarrassed and it had way more of an emotional impact on me than I thought it would.”  Madison said she was “horrified” by the idea that the others knew what happened between them.  “I thought he was really smart, I really looked up to him, so I liked him and it wasn’t that the idea of possibly having sex with him repelled me so much – I know that’s not relatable to a lot of people because they’re like, ‘Oh, he’s an old man, gross.’”  “It was more the group aspect that was really out of my comfort zone and just the feeling of, ‘Wow, OK, that happened. Everybody knows it happened,’” she continued. “I kind of all of a sudden felt like everybody was going to know about me, and I was horrified by it.”  Madison also noted that she felt like she had to stay after that “traumatic experience.” The next morning, Madison asked Hefner if she could move into the mansion and he agreed.

Flavor Flav Escapes Boulder

Flavor Flav narrowly escaped death on Tuesday when a boulder struck the side of his car while he was driving from Las Vegas to Los Angeles.  His rep says that he was making the journey in his white Audi when heavy rain caused a large boulder to tumble down a cliff in La Tuna Canyon. The massive rock flew over his windshield and slammed onto the right side of his vehicle before continuing its tumble down the cliff.  He briefly lost control of his car. Fortunately, he managed to regain control of the vehicle despite the rainy conditions and quickly pulled over to assess the damage. Pictures show damage at the impact site, which crushed his headlight. It dented his hood so much that it nearly popped off and twisted the metal surrounding the car’s right-front tire.  “God is good. I came very close to death, but I am super grateful to be alive,” Flavor Flav, whose real name is William Jonathan Drayton Jr., said in a statement.

Jennifer Garner Seen After Affleck Interview

Jennifer Garner was seen in good spirits less than 24 hours after her ex-husband, Ben Affleck, aired their dirty laundry in an interview.  She was photographed Wednesday going for a stroll in Santa Monica, Calif., holding a cup of coffee and flashing a big smile.  Affleck, who went to rehab for alcoholism in 2018, told Howard Stern on Tuesday that he “still would’ve been drinking” had he remained married to Garner.  “I was like, ‘I can’t leave because of my kids, but I’m not happy, what do I do?’” he added in the revealing interview. “And what I did was [I] drank a bottle of scotch and fell asleep on the couch, which turned out not to be the solution.”  They were married from 2005 to 2018 and share three children: Violet, 16, Seraphina, 12, and 9-year-old Samuel. Ben also told Stern that the exes had moments of tension, disagreements over custody, but ultimately split “amicably.”  Affleck was slammed over his remarks because it appeared to many that he had just publicly humiliated the mother of his three children, and placed a big part of the blame for his alcoholism on her.  “When you can’t accept that your drinking problem is because of you, you still have a drinking problem,” one person pointed out on Twitter. “Jennifer Garner didn’t drive Ben Affleck to drink, she did however drive him to rehab probably saving his life.”

Kelly Clarkson Wants To Stay Single

Kelly Clarkson joked this week that she’ll be “single forever” and has trouble seeing the “red flags” in bad dates, as she talked about relationships amid her ongoing divorce from husband Brandon Blackstock.  “I’m always that person that’s like, ‘Oh, I don’t know. Maybe they were having an off day,’” she said of her dating woes during a segment with Andy Cohen on Monday’s episode of “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”  When Cohen admitted he tends to “cut and run” after seeing a red flag on a date, “The Voice” coach quipped, “We should hang out so that rubs off [on me].”  Andy also revealed he enjoys getting cocktails on a date, but Clarkson didn’t necessarily agree.  “I don’t know. I might be more of a coffee person. I don’t know if I’m willing to invest in an evening with you yet,” she said. “I’ll be single forever.”  She filed for divorce from Blackstock in June 2020 after nearly seven years of marriage.

Tortoise Prompts 911 Calls

Wildlife officials in Pennsylvania said an escaped African tortoise went for a walk down the middle of a road, prompting 911 calls from concerned residents who feared the animal could be a snapping turtle.  The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission said 911 calls came in on Sunday reporting a large turtle walking down the middle of a street in Washington County.  “The original caller said it was a huge snapper and didn’t know what to do with it, so he called 911,” Waterways Conservation Officer Jon Stark wrote in a post on the commission’s Facebook page.  Stark said he rushed to the scene to confirm the creature’s species.  “If it was as big as they said it was, that’s a giant snapping turtle,” he wrote.  Stark said he arrived to find the 100-pound creature was not dangerous at all — it was an African tortoise.  “This big old turtle just wanted to go for a walk and be free. Still not sure where he got loose from, but now he has a new home and a large area to roam,” Stark wrote.  See the pic HERE.

Santa Breaks Chimney Record

A British strongman with multiple Guinness World Records for balancing heavy objects on his head got into the Christmas spirit by balancing a chimney pot — complete with smoke.  John Evans, 74, of Ilkeston, England, donned a Santa suit and balanced the chimney on his head for a Tuesday morning appearance on ITV’s This Morning.  Evans said he used discarded pieces from demolished buildings to build the chimney for his balancing act.  “I’ve always been a builder so I understand about flues and things like that, I wanted to do something really special in the run-up to Christmas, I’ve done Christmas trees for a few years and that’s very good,” Evans told Derbyshire Live.  “I got the idea of doing the funnel from seeing the rubbish chutes on building sites.”  Evans tossed a pair of smoke grenades into the 8-foot chute to give the effect of a functioning chimney during his balancing act.  Evans holds dozens of Guinness World Records for balancing objects on his head, including 13 kegs of beer, two girls on bikes and 300 loaves of bread.  See the video HERE.

Lions Escape Shipping Containers

Two lions were safely tranquilized and taken to a secure facility after escaping from a container at a Singapore airport.  Singapore Airlines confirmed the lions escaped at Changi Airport, but remained contained by safety netting until being shot with a tranquilizer gun by a team from the Mandai Wildlife Group.  The group took the two lions, and five others in the same shipment, to a facility to recover from sedation.  The lions arrived at the airport from another country and had been due to depart the hub for a destination overseas. The lions’ country of origin and intended destination were not released.  Singapore Airlines said an investigation is underway to determine how the lions escaped from the container.

Florida Woman Breaks Sink During Intimate Encounter

A Seminole, Florida, woman was charged with criminal mischief after an intimate encounter in a pub bathroom ended up breaking the sink off the wall Tuesday, according to an affidavit.  The affidavit said Kathryn Trammel, 37, and a “friend” were in the bathroom of the Irish 31 Pub in Seminole together when staff members asked them to leave.  The pair then sat at the bar before entering the bathroom again and leaving a short time later, police said. However, the pub staff noticed after the second bathroom visit that the sink was broken off the wall, according to the affidavit.  This prompted the pub’s owner to press charges.  Police said Trammel admitted to getting physical with her friend in the bathroom and breaking the sink off the wall, causing $500 in damage. She did not elaborate on exactly how the sink was damaged.

10 Realistic Ways To Set Boundaries With Others During The Holidays

HUFFINGTON POST

  1. Decide on your boundaries in advance.

First, decide what your boundaries will be. Ernesto Lira de la Rosa, a psychologist and media advisor for the Hope for Depression Research Foundation, suggested asking yourself:

  • What things are important for me to do during this holiday season?
  • How do I want to feel after the holidays are over?
  • Do I need some time for myself during the holiday season?
  • What will help me feel happy during the holiday season?
  • Am I saying yes to a lot of things because I feel guilty?

“This is a process, and it may take us some time to determine what boundaries we want to set with ourselves and with our loved ones,” Lira de la Rosa said.

  1. Don’t feel obligated to travel.

If you don’t want to travel right now, that’s OK.

“Holiday travel this year is complicated,” Kaufman said. “Perhaps you don’t feel comfortable traveling to see family because it feels uncertain or unsafe. This is an opportunity to set a boundary.”

She suggests telling family members, “I don’t feel safe enough to travel. I wish I could see you, and I’m sad that I can’t.”

  1. Say “yes” only to the events you truly want to attend.

“If we recognize that we tend to overfill our schedule with holiday parties (usually out of the desire to please others), and then feel emotionally exhausted, then maybe the thing we are needing is self-preservation,” said Kaitlin Soule, a licensed marriage and family therapist and author of “A Little Less of a Hot Mess.”

“This might look like committing to saying ‘yes’ to just your top two or three holiday-related events and building in more time to cozy up at home with a good book or a loved one,” she added.

  1. Establish your COVID requirements ahead of time.

Anisha Patel-Dunn , a practicing psychiatrist and chief medical officer of LifeStance Health, suggested also setting COVID-19 boundaries, especially with people who are unvaccinated.

If you don’t want to expand your circle this year, try saying something like “to keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible this season, I’m comfortable hosting our immediate family at home, and will plan to celebrate with friends and neighbors that we typically see this time of the year in different ways.”

Try to keep the discussion focused on you and your concerns, Patel-Dunn said. For example, you could say, “I would feel uncomfortable hosting you and putting you at risk knowing that you’re unvaccinated,” or “out of respect for everyone attending this year, here are the guidelines ― let me know if you need me to send a list of places to get PCR tested.”

  1. Set a budget for gifts that won’t cause you anxiety.

“It is common for people to feel particularly stressed about monetary issues around the holiday time,” Hoffman said.

She suggests communicating ahead of time in whatever way feels right for you. “That might look like texting your friends that you would prefer to set a $20 cap for the gift exchange or simply opting out of that part of the party this year,” Hoffman explained.

  1. Excuse yourself from triggering conversations.

“Some find it very difficult to engage in conversations with those with extreme opposing opinions on matters such as politics, religion, culture or current events,” said Lori Ryland, a clinical psychologist and chief clinical officer of Pinnacle Treatment Centers. “Remember that those with strong opinions are very rarely convinced of an opposing view. If your goal is to get through to him/her and align them with your views, it is unlikely to happen.”

Avoid those triggering situations if you can ― sometimes that means not going if you know someone will be there who disrespects you. If not, Ryland recommended saying, “We will just have to agree to disagree” or “I am here to enjoy family and the holiday, not debate.”

And, if someone is commenting on your weight, body or eating habits, you don’t have to listen. “If you are on the receiving end of comments like these — which are rooted in the false belief that we are only good when our bodies are a different shape, size, or weight — set the boundary that makes you feel most safe,” Kaufman said. “Perhaps you assertively say, ‘I feel uncomfortable and hurt when I hear your words.’ Or maybe you leave the room.”

  1. Set time limits at parties.

“Time is limited and precious during the holiday season,” said Laura Bokar, a licensed marriage and family therapist, chief executive officer at Fox Valley Institute and author of “We Need to Talk – 24 Simple Insights for Relationships.” “Planning will be very important. Set a schedule and let family and friends know ahead of time when and how much time you will be able to spend with them.”

She added that if some are disappointed, remember it’s not your responsibility to take care of those feelings.

  1. Set consequences for your boundaries.

Boundaries without a consequence are just a suggestion,” said Divya Robin, a psychotherapist in New York City.

“Let people know if a boundary of yours is crossed what will happen — whether that means you will leave the room for a few minutes, get some fresh air, or entirely leave — as this lets people know you are serious about your boundaries,” Robin explained.

  1. Practice self-care throughout the holiday season.

Amira Johnson, a therapist at Berman Psychotherapy in Atlanta, suggested continuing self-care practices during the holidays. Try bringing your journal with you while traveling or allotting times to meditate throughout the day.

“Keeping yourself grounded and still feeling connected with yourself will keep you from feeling overwhelmed and out of alignment,” she said.

  1. Take care of your overall health.

Ronit Levy, director of Bucks County Anxiety Center in Newton, Pennsylvania, said to also focus on sleep and nutrition this holiday season. “When your body feels depleted, you’re more likely to be cranky and make decisions that don’t protect your health,” Levy said. “It’s also harder to think clearly and stay calm.”

Levy also recommended taking breaks throughout the day, as “overwhelming your brain and body makes it harder to stick to your boundaries, manage tough feelings, and handle stressful situations.”

“Focus on what matters to you and what you want to get out of the holidays,” Levy added. “Remember that the holidays aren’t about pleasing everyone. Focus on the traditions and people that really matter to you as well as the memories you want to create. This will help decrease how much you have on your plate and the resentment that comes from being overwhelmed.”

Setting boundaries may seem difficult, but they can actually make the holidays more enjoyable. Don’t be afraid to give them a try.
