Meghan and Harry Faced Big Threats

Meghan Markle faced “very real” threats during her time living in the U.K. with her husband Prince Harry.  On Tuesday, the former head of counterterrorism for the Metropolitan Police appeared on Channel 4 News and described how the Duchess of Sussex’s life was at risk before she left for her home state of California.  Neil Basu opened up about the alarming allegations his team had to address amid his resignation as assistant commissioner for specialist operations for the Met Police. He is leaving the force after 30 years and has earned the Queen’s Police Medal for his service.  He also served as the senior officer for the counterterrorism unit of the Met Police in March 2018, which was two months before the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s royal wedding.  “You were in charge of royal protection,” journalist Cathy Newman is heard saying in a clip shared by the network. “How would you characterize the threats that Meghan and Harry received?”  “Well, disgusting and very real,” Basu replied. He also called extreme right-wing terrorism a “fast-growing threat” to the country.  “But there were many serious, credible threats against Meghan, were there?” asked Newman. “Emanating from the far-right?”  “Absolutely,” said Basu. “And if you’d seen the stuff that was written and you were receiving it… the kind of rhetoric that’s online… you would feel under threat all the time.”

Sexy Drama At Good Morning America

Good Morning America’s Amy Robach and T.J. Holmes are sparking speculation about the nature of their relationship after being spotted together numerous times this month. The coworkers, who are both married to other people, can be seen holding hands in a car in one photo, published by the Daily Mail on Wednesday. In another snap, they are enjoying drinks and laughs at a bar in New York City. One picture even shows Holmes playfully touching Robach’s backside as she packed up the car. The outlet reports that the images are from various outings in November. Robach, 49, and Holmes, 45, have yet to publicly comment on the photos. Both members of the ABC morning show have been married to their respective partners for years. Robach, for her part, wed Andrew Shue in 2010. She was previously married to Tim McIntosh from 1996 to 2008 and shares daughter Ava and Analise with her former spouse. She’s also the stepmother of Shue’s kids — Nate, Aidan and Wyatt — from his previous union to Jennifer Hageney.

The Rock Gives Back From Where He Stole

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson confessed in a recent Instagram post that when he was young and “broke as hell,” he stole a Snickers bar from a Hawaii 7-Eleven store every day on the way to the gym for nearly a year. In the feel-good viral video, Johnson returns to his childhood convenience store to do what he called “righting his wrongs” ― and buy every Snickers bar on the shelf. He explained on Instagram that it was the “least he could do.” “When I was 14 years old, every day I used to stop here at this 7-Eleven and steal a king-sized Snickers bar because I couldn’t afford to buy one. I had to come back and buy every Snickers bar on these shelves,” he said.  He also took care of every purchase for the people who walked into the store, picking up the tab for shoppers in the store totaling $298.  He left the candy bars at the counter and asked the cashiers to give them to anyone else trying to steal a Snickers bar.  “After decades of me wanting to come back home to 7-Eleven and try to make good, that felt really, really good,” he said, at the end of the video.
*********Then he was arrested and forced to sign a confession!!!
********He got probation after promising to never do a “Tooth Fairy” sequel!!!

“Wednesday” Is A Big Hit

It looks like it was a good first week for the Netflix original series and “The Addams Family” reimagining “Wednesday.” The new series was so popular that its first week of viewership topped the previously held record by “Stranger Things 4” for the streaming service.  Per The Hollywood Reporter, “Wednesday,” starring Jenna Ortega as the titular Wednesday Addams, drew the biggest-ever audience for Netflix for an English-language series.  THR reports that the show drew 341.2 million viewing hours worldwide last week, based on Netflix’s own internal measurements. The figure surpasses the first week of “Strange Things 4” following that season’s debut earlier this year from the period of May 30-June 5. This is the best week ever for an English-language series on the streaming service. The Korean-language series, “Squid Game,” still holds the all-time record for its opening week on Netflix. The South Korean survival drama series drew 571.76 million viewers for its first week of release from September 27-October 3, 2021. Additionally, it later drew two weeks above 400 million hours as well.  The show has been generating a lot of buzz online, especially for an incredible dance sequence featuring Ortega’s Wednesday. Ortega choreographed the sequence herself. The YouTube clip of the sequence is now up to over 3.3 million views since it dropped just a few short days ago.

Hot Sauce Collection

A North Carolina man has what he believes to be the world’s largest collection of hot sauce, totaling about 11,000 bottles.  High Point resident Vic Clinco, who started collecting hot sauce about 26 years ago, said his collection now totals about 11,000 bottles, and is believed to be the largest collection of hot sauce in the world.  “It has turned into an obsession,” Clinco told WFMY-TV. “What started as a small collection has grown into me being at the center of a culture that surrounds hot sauces.”  Clinco, who documents his collecting on social media, said he has been in contact with Guinness World Records about making his collection officially the largest in the world. He said he hopes to organize tasting events in the future.  “I want it to be shared with anyone that has the love of the heat as I do,” Clinco said. “My end goal is to have so many bottles that there is no wall left in sight.”

Squirrel Knocks Out Power

Utility officials in a Tennessee town said nearly one-third of customers lost power when a squirrel came into contact with substation equipment.  Dickson Electric System in Dickson said in a Twitter post that many customers lost power for a brief time Tuesday when “a cute little squirrel” entered a substation and “created a whole lot of chaos.”  The company said the power was only out for a short time.  “We don’t always lose power to nearly a third of our customers all at the same time, but when we do, it’s usually related to an uninvited guest inside our substation,” the company tweeted.

Bear Attacks Rudolph!

A Nevada man’s home security camera captured footage of an apparently confused bear that attempted to make a meal out of an inflatable Rudolph holiday decoration.  Dave Lester of Zephyr Cove, in the South Lake Tahoe area, said in a Facebook post that he woke Saturday morning to find the inflatable Rudolph he had put out for Christmas had been shredded by an early-morning visitor.  “Sad news,” Lester wrote, “Woke up this morning to Rudolph laying on the ground unresponsive. No amount of CPR or duct tape could revive him.”  Lester shared security camera footage showing the decoration being mauled by a bear that visited his yard about 5 a.m. He said the animal showed no interest in any of his other decorations.  The homeowner said a group of bears are known to frequent the area and are usually spotted about once a week.  See the pics and video HERE.

Police Hire Killer Robot Dogs

Supervisors in San Francisco voted Tuesday to give city police the ability to use potentially lethal, remote-controlled robots in emergency situations — following an emotionally charged debate that reflected divisions on the politically liberal board over support for law enforcement.  The vote was 8-3, with the majority agreeing to grant police the option despite strong objections from civil liberties and other police oversight groups. Opponents said the authority would lead to the further militarization of a police force already too aggressive with poor and minority communities.    Supervisor Connie Chan, a member of the committee that forwarded the proposal to the full board, said she understood concerns over use of force but that “according to state law, we are required to approve the use of these equipments. So here we are, and it’s definitely not a easy discussion.”  The San Francisco Police Department said it does not have pre-armed robots and has no plans to arm robots with guns. But the department could deploy robots equipped with explosive charges “to contact, incapacitate, or disorient violent, armed, or dangerous suspect” when lives are at stake, SFPD spokesperson Allison Maxie said in a statement.

What First-Time Managers Should Never Say

HUFFINGTON POST

  1. ‘Message me anytime something comes up.’

Having an open-door policy sounds wonderful in theory, but in reality saying you are always available is “setting yourself up to be constantly interrupted, which will impact your ability to do your work,” Brown said. “Because you are at the center of how everything gets done, you’ll never feel like you can go away.”

In this way, telling your team you are constantly available holds back your career development and it holds back your team’s as well. In worst-case scenarios, you are teaching your team to become dependent on you for getting their work done if they do not get a response from you, Brown said.

A better way is for managers to be upfront about their boundaries of when it’s best to communicate and how to do it based on the urgency of a question, Brown said.

  1. ‘I’ll tell you everything.’

“In an effort to demonstrate their authenticity and likability, a pitfall of new managers is to promise, or set a precedent, with their new teams that they will share everything with them,” said Angela Karachristos, a career coach who has worked in human resources.

While sharing can be instrumental in creating trust and cohesion on a team, Karachristos said, there may be times when complete transparency is neither possible nor appropriate.  “Transitioning from an individual contributor to a manager of others means the days of oversharing, having a vocal opinion about leadership’s decisions and speculating on team members’ motives are over,” she said. “New managers have to find ways to bring the team together, and there are times when there may be things better left unsaid.”  It’s better for managers to promise they will be honest and open with their team to every extent possible, and their actions should back that up, Karachristos said.

As a boss, you also have to be careful about how casual you are when sharing details, too. “First-time managers may also try to treat their direct reports as friends, and be overly familiar with them,” said career coach Anne Genduso. “This includes sharing intimate details, personal information, or informally addressing them like ‘Bro’ or ‘Hey, girl.’”

  1. ‘I’ll get the ball rolling on this.’

Brown said open-ended promises like “I’ll get the ball rolling on this” are not effective because they can give false hope that the request will definitely happen and implies “eventually we’ll get to the destination.”

Brown gave the example of raise requests: If you’re a first-time manager, you likely do not oversee the budget, so promising to put a raise request in motion is not something you can guarantee, she said.

This desire commonly comes from a good place of wanting to be the boss you did not have. “We’ve all had a bad manager,” Brown said. “We didn’t feel like they were our champions and I think all of this is what we go in wanting to be without realizing what the process is.”

But in reality, it’s better to explain the expectations with language like, “I’ll talk to my supervisor and give you feedback,” than to make a vague reassurance and later disappoint your direct report, Brown said.

  1. ‘Let’s get in the weeds of this minor detail.’

As an individual contributor, focusing so much on technical aspects of the job, or “getting into the weeds,” may have made you a star employee, but it can be your downfall as a new manager.  When a new manager reaches the level of leadership where others are looking for direction, team members want to hear about how their work connects to the bigger picture or plan, Karachristos said. Employees do not want to go down rabbit holes.

“New managers that bog down their team with details about how to get work done run the risk of being labeled a micromanager or short-sighted,” Karachristos said. “That’s not to say that technical expertise isn’t important, but new managers need to demonstrate both operational and strategic thinking.”

  1. ‘It’s not that big of a deal.’

First-time managers are often uncomfortable with offering corrections and feedback, so they commonly use phrases like “It’s not that big of a deal” to come off less harsh, Brown said.

But instead of reassuring direct reports, these kind of statements just confuse them further.

“If it’s not that big of a deal, then why are you mentioning it?” Brown said. “That whole statement minimizes everything you just said. Even if it was a serious conversation, the person then is confused. … ‘So then I’m not supposed to act on this?’”

Instead of minimizing their feedback, Brown said, it’s better for managers to be upfront about why they are offering it in the first place and what they are trying to correct with language like, “I don’t want you to panic, I don’t want you to feel like you’re not doing a good job, but I do want to highlight this to you.”
