Golden Globe Ratings
The Golden Globe Awards on NBC, which signal the unofficial start of the awards season, attracted as many as 26.8 million viewers (in 2004, according to Nielsen Media Research). Of course, there were no streaming services or as many cable networks at the time. But the long-awaited return of The Golden Globe Awards on Tuesday after a one year absence fell below expectations. Based on the fast affiliate ratings from Nielsen (which are time period based and only approximate), the bloated 3+ hour live extravaganza averaged an estimated 5.36 million viewers. Keep in mind this was based on the 8-11 p.m. ET daypart only and does not include DVR usage or the stats from streaming partner Peacock.

Beyonce – Spears Collaboration Falls Through
Beyoncé asked Britney Spears to appear in a new music video, but the collaboration ultimately did not come to fruition. No reason was given. Beyoncé and Spears have worked together before. In 2004, the duo sang Queen’s hit “We Will Rock You” in a Pepsi commercial with fellow pop star Pink. Enrique Iglesias also appeared in the iconic gladiator-themed ad. The collab with Queen Bey would have been Spears’ second music-related project since her controversial 13-year conservatorship ended in November 2021. Spears made her highly anticipated comeback in August 2022 when she and Elton John released their duet, “Hold Me Closer.” The upbeat remake of the legendary Piano Man’s classic “Tiny Dancer” debuted at No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Spears’ first top 10 single in a decade.

Jeremy Renner’s Family Gives Update
Jeremy Renner is making major strides following a New Year’s Day snowplow accident on his property in Reno, Nevada. “We are so thrilled with his progress,” his sister, Kym Renner, says in the new issue of PEOPLE. “If anyone knows Jeremy, he is a fighter and doesn’t mess around. He is crushing all the progress goals. We couldn’t feel more positive about the road ahead.” He has been hospitalized since Jan. 1, when he was airlifted to a local medical center. He suffered “blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries,” according to a statement from his rep, and underwent emergency surgery the next day. Renner gave his first update to fans on Jan. 3, posting a hospital bed selfie to Instagram and thanking well-wishers for their support. “Thank you all for your kind words. Im too messed up now to type. But I send love to you all.” Two days later, he shared a video to his Instagram Story where his sister could be seen massaging his head and making her brother laugh as their mother looked on during what the actor wrote was a “spa moment to lift my spirits.”

Prince Harry Fact-Checks The Crown
Prince Harry admitted to watching the hit Netflix show “The Crown” and said he even makes sure to “fact-check” the show about the royal family. Appearing on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” in an episode that aired Tuesday, he discussed the series when asked if he’s “binged” anything on TV lately. After teasing he has, Colbert asked if “The Crown” was one of the shows, saying he “had to have watched some” of it since it’s based on Harry’s late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. “Yes, I have watched some of The Crown,” he revealed, before Colbert asked if he’s watched any of the recent episodes. “The older stuff and the more recent stuff,” Harry clarified. He was then asked if he did any “fact-checking” while watching the show. “Yes, I do actually,” the father-of-two revealed. “Which, by the way, is another reason why it’s so important that history has it right.” Harry first admitted to dabbling in the hit Netflix show, which is in its fifth season, in Feb. 2021 during an expansive interview with “The Late Late Show” host James Corden. Harry told Corden that he prefers watching the show to reading headlines about him and his wife, Meghan Markle. The most recent season centered around the tumultuous marriage — and divorce — of his parents, Diana Spencer (played by Elizabeth Debicki) and the now-monarch Charles (Dominic West).

Ben Affleck Takes Over Dunkin’ Donuts
Customers at a Dunkin’ Donuts in Medford, Massachusetts, were surprised to see Ben Affleck handing out their orders on Tuesday as he filmed an ad for his favorite brand. Customer Lisa Mackay snapped a photo of Affleck as he served up her iced coffee via the drive-through window. She told local NBC reporter Darren Botelho that the Batman star was “incredibly funny and quick-witted.” Mackay also told NBC10 Boston that film crew members on site told her they were making an ad. TMZ, which has additional photos from Ben’s drive-thru stint, speculated that it’s for the Super Bowl, which is Sunday, Feb. 12. Affleck, a Boston native, has frequently been snapped with his own orders from the Massachusetts-based coffee and donuts shop, so it’s not a big leap that he’d agree to promote the brand more directly. Last time my dog made me laugh-

King Cobra Invades Car
A man in Kerala, India, called environmental authorities for help when he returned to his car that had been parked for two days and discovered a king cobra had taken up residence inside. The man, identified by the surname Kunjumon, told local Forest Department officials his car had been parked for two days in Palakkad District before he returned to the vehicle and found the venomous snake inside. Forest Department rescuers arrived at the scene and removed the snake from the car. The king cobra was estimated to be about 10 years old. The snake was returned to the wild. See the video HERE.

Hibernating Bear Found Under Porch
A Connecticut family said they were shocked to discover something unexpected underneath their deck — a hibernating black bear. Vincent Dashukewich said he and his girlfriend were in the back yard of his parents’ Plainville home when their dog started barking at the back deck. “My dog started growling that’s when my girlfriend got scared and ran to the house and I turned my head and saw the bear and we were staring right at each other, it’s pretty crazy,” Dashukewich told WFSB-TV. The family contacted Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, which advised them to leave the bear to hibernate for the winter. “They said to just leave him alone, let him be, as long as he’s not creating a disturbance or, you know, bothering anybody,” Dashukewich told WMUR-TV. Boa Constrictor Goes Thru XRay Machine
Transportation Security Administration agents at a Florida airport noticed something shocking in an X-ray image of a traveler’s carry-on bag — a 4-foot boa constrictor. The TSA said in an Instagram post that a traveler at Tampa International Airport in Florida put her carry-on bag through the security checkpoint X-ray machine, and operators quickly identified the live snake. “Our officers at Tampa International Airport didn’t find this hyssssssterical,” the post said. “We really have no adder-ation for discovering any pet going through an x-ray machine.” A TSA spokeswoman said the woman told agents the boa was her emotional support pet. The spokeswoman said the airline was informed and the snake was not allowed to board the plane. See the pics HERE.

Brussels Sprouts
If you want to make vegetables with crispy exteriors and warm, tender interiors without compromising their nutrition by frying them in oil, the air fryer is the perfect tool. One hearty veggie that air fries especially well is the Brussels sprout.
“As long as the sprouts are seasoned accordingly and prepped well before they’re placed in the air fryer, you can make them work,” said Mike Sheerin, the executive chef of François Frankie in Chicago.
The “seasoning and prepping” process that Sheerin mentions can be done by drizzling the sprouts with olive oil, adding a hefty pinch of kosher salt and a few grinds of black pepper, and using your hands to toss the sprouts until they’re fully coated. That will allow you to maintain the interior moisture while also getting a crunchy outside. “The crunchiness is so satisfying,” said Monica Lynn, a recipe developer and the author of “5 Square Low-Carb Meals.”

Crispy Roasted Potatoes
Like Brussels sprouts, potatoes excel in the air fryer because this cooking method gives them a “crispy outside and tender inside,” said Yankel Polak, the head chef and culinary director of ButcherBox. He added that the starch content of potatoes “works really well with this appliance.” The air frying method offers impressive potato-cooking versatility, working for French fries, home fries, potato skins, “roasted” potatoes and hash browns.

Plantains
Plantains are also starchy plants, which gives them an edge where air frying is concerned. “Plantains easily dry and cook in air fryers because they are more solid with less external moisture content,” said Michael Haas, the owner and recipe developer behind Angry BBQ.

Falafel
Now we come to this writer’s personal favorite air fryer dish: the fried chickpea fritters known as falafel. The air fryer does a masterful job of “building a quick external crust while warming the interior,” said Olivia Roszkowski, a chef-instructor of health-supportive culinary arts at the Institute of Culinary Education. The process is as efficient as it is effective; in less than 15 minutes, you can air fry a dozen falafel to perfection.

Breaded Chicken
When it comes to air-fried meats, our experts largely agreed that chicken lends itself especially well to this form of cooking. “The fat content in the meat and the skin of the chicken allows the meat to stay juicy while the skin gets nice and crispy,” said Trisha Pérez Kennealy, a culinary educator and owner of the Inn at Hastings Park in Lexington, Massachusetts. When cooking “chicken tenders with a crunchy coating like panko, the air circulation in the air fryer ensures even cooking, crispiness and a beautiful color,” Kennealy said.
Polak also likes to cook breaded chicken in the air fryer, and he recommended the following preparation steps: “To ensure [that] breading stays on the chicken, make sure to moisten each piece with a swipe of olive oil or mustard. Additionally, don’t put TOO much breading on ― this can lead it to being blown off by the airflow of the appliance.”

Foods That Shouldn’t Be Air Fried
Burgers
Some air fryer ads and sponsored influencer posts insist that the air fryer can be used to cook absolutely anything without a drop in quality. As much as we’d love to believe that, the facts don’t support that claim. Case in point: the classic hamburger.
“Unless you like your burgers well done, leave them out of the air fryer,” said Anna Vocino, the cookbook author and recipe developer behind Eat Happy Kitchen. “Air fryers are not ideal for grilling red meat. You’d be able to get the inside of a burger to medium rare, but the outside wouldn’t get that ‘char’ that you want on a burger. Plus, it’s really messy.”
Wet Batters
Several of our experts reminded us that air fryers and deep fryers are not the same thing, and some items that work beautifully in a deep fryer aren’t suitable for air frying. “Foods that have wet batters, like onion rings” are a key example, Kennealy said, explaining that air frying “makes it harder to get the batter to set and become crispy.” In most cases, the result is a texturally-unsatisfying bite that leaves a sticky mess of batter all over your air fryer.
Fresh Greens
It stands to reason that placing fresh greens like kale in an air fryer would produce crisp “chips” ideal for snacking, but Polak said the convection oven-style air circulation in these fryers will cause “greens like kale or spinach to fly all over the place and cook unevenly.” For that reason, Polak advised us to “stick with a normal oven” when making kale chips.
Cheese
Cheese, like wet batter, can’t be its best self when cooked in an air fryer. “An air fryer is actually NOT a deep fryer. When you make something like a mozzarella stick in a deep fryer, an instant outer crust is formed,” Polak said. “In an air fryer, this does not happen, and you’ll instead end up with a gooey, cheesy mess.”
Bacon
The trouble with cooking bacon strips in an air fryer lies in both their fattiness and their size. “Bacon is a fatty food, and when it is cooked in an air fryer, the fat can drip down and cause smoke or splatter,” said Brenda Peralta, a recipe developer for FeastGood.com. “This can make the bacon difficult to cook evenly, and it can also produce a lot of smoke and odors.”
Peralta also told us that “a bacon strip is a small and delicate food, and it can be difficult to flip or remove from the air fryer basket without breaking it.” If you like to cook bacon in batches, then Peralta also has some bad news on that front: “The air fryer basket may not be large enough to accommodate a large quantity of bacon. This can make it difficult to cook a lot of bacon at once, which can be inconvenient if you are cooking for a group.”
