Ellen To Have Live Audience Soon

The Ellen DeGeneres Show” is taking another step toward normalcy amid the coronavirus pandemic by bringing back part of its live studio audience.   Like many talk show hosts, she taped her show remotely from her home at the onset of the pandemic in March before finally returning to her studio on Sept. 21 for the premiere of Season 18. However, until now the show has operated without her traditional live studio audience.   According to Variety, her show will air on Oct. 28 with 40 fans in the studio to cheer her on while 70 virtual attendees will fill out the remaining seats to help maintain social distancing. All of the guests who attend will reportedly be subject to strict health and safety protocols to help ensure that no one contracts or spreads COVID-19.  The return of the live audience comes just in time for Halloween.  She typically goes all out for holiday, dressing up in past years as various pop culture icons such as Cardi B, Sia, The Kardashians and Snooki. In addition, her audience will be in place as she kicks off the holiday season with her 12 Days of Giveaways that typically sees her shower her studio audiences with prizes and gifts over the course of 12 episodes.

Matthew McConaughey’s Alternative Career Ideas

Matthew McConaughey sat down with Oprah Winfrey for an episode of the Apple TV+ series “The Oprah Conversation” and revealed that there were several other careers on his mind back in the day.  “I dabbled with thinking about other careers,” he admitted in a clip exclusively obtained by Entertainment Weekly. “I dabbled with thinking about being a high school football coach, I dabbled with being a symphony orchestra leader, I dabbled with being a wildlife guide, being a school teacher.”  He added: “I was not going back.”  However, he stuck with acting, feeling that he was determined to make it work.  “I was starting to get that feeling like even though the harder this gets, this means there’s more reward on the other side,” he remembered. “‘Stick with it. Stay in it. Don’t pull the parachute, McConaughey.’”

Lori Loughlin Preparing For Prison

Lori Loughlin was sentenced to two months in prison after pleading guilty to participating in the college admissions scandal.  She  is closing in on her time behind bars, as she and her husband Mossimo Giannulli, who also pleaded guilty, to turn themselves into federal prison facilities.  She is taking some time to prepare herself.  “She’s mentally preparing for this. She wants to go in, do her time, and get out,” a source close to Loughlin told People magazine. “She wants it to be as uneventful as possible, and she wants this to be a distant memory by 2021.” Her plea deal also required her to pay a $150,000 fine, undergo two years of supervised release and serve 100 hours of community service.  The fine was presumably paid, as she was given 60 days to do so after her Aug. 21 sentencing, 67 days ago.

Kim Kardashian Blasted For B-Day Celebration

Kim Kardashian was blasted for posting photos from her 40th birthday party in which she flew her friends and family to a private island amid the COVID-19 pandemic.  “After 2 weeks of multiple health screens and asking everyone to quarantine, I surprised my closest inner circle with a trip to a private island where we could pretend things were normal just for a brief moment in time,” she tweeted on Tuesday alongside photos from the lavish event.  The tweet quickly inspired hundreds of memes poking fun at Kardashian’s tone-deaf post.  Zach Braff quoted Kardashian’s tweet with a photo of Ja Rule and Billy McFarland, the organizers of the Fyre Festival scam.  Netflix re-posted the same message with a screenshot of Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo in the 2010 thriller “Shutter Island.”  “The Hunger Games” official account posted the meme with a photo of the movie’s cast.  And Ronan Farrow posted Kardashian’s words attached to Hieronymus Bosch’s painting “The Garden of Earthly Delights.”  Despite the backlash, Kardashian continued to post videos from her birthday excursion to her Instagram Story, writing, “Best Trip Ever.” She also shared a photo from the trip with Kourtney and Khloé with the caption, “Girls just wanna have sun” on Wednesday.

Strip Club Skeletons Removed

A Texas woman said her strip club-inspired Halloween display featuring seductively posed skeletons has raised the ire of her local homeowner’s association.  Angela Nava of Richmond said she received a letter from her homeowner’s association Sunday saying there had been complaints filed about her “inappropriate” and “offensively positioned” Halloween decorations.  “It’s modeled after an adult club,” she told KTRK-TV. “We just really had a good time changing the scene up every night. Every night, we change the positions of the skeletons, and it’s really been just a great creative outlet for me.”  The display features skeletons in colorful wigs pole dancing and striking other suggestive poses.  “We’ve all been cooped up and it’s been just a terrible year,” Nava said. “We’ve just decided if this brings a little bit of joy and a little bit of smiles to someone, then we’re doing everything right.”  Nava said she doesn’t plan to fight the letter from the HOA, since it gives her 30 days from Sunday to remove the display — well after Halloween.  See the video HERE.

Running With Stroller

A Colorado man broke a Guinness World Record when he ran a mile in under 5 minutes — while pushing his 1-year-old son in a stroller.  Andrew Vos of Broomfield, took to the track at Broomfield Heights Middle School while his son, Bodhi, rode in the stroller in front of him.  Vos said he became interested in the record after learning it was 5 minutes.  “[I] contacted the Guinness World Records, and they alluded to it was 5 minutes. And I’m like, ‘that’s doable,'” Vos told KUSA-TV.  Vos finished his single mile run with a time of 4 minutes, 57.1 seconds, enough to take the record.  “It feels good, it was a good accomplishment,” Vos said after his run. “It’ll be fun to look back and be in there with a kid of mine, our youngest kid.”  See the video HERE.

Cows Destroy Pumpkin Patch

Officials at a North Carolina elementary school said they checked security footage and identified the culprits behind the destruction of the school’s fall harvest display — some pumpkin-loving cows.  Edneyville Elementary School posted a photo to Facebook in early October showing the fall harvest display donated by The Nix Pumpkin Patch, but weeks later a follow-up post showed the display in disarray following an apparent act of vandalism.  Principal Marsha Justice said she reviewed security camera footage from outside the school and identified the perpetrators as a group of 11 cows rummaging around the pumpkins and gourds for snacks.  “Thank goodness the damage was repairable, and that we were able to check security footage and get pictures of the 11 perpetrators! If you recognize any of these hooved hoodlums, let us know,” the school said in a Facebook post.

Pet Tortoise Goes On Adventure

An Alabama family said their pet tortoise is safely back at home after escaping from his fenced enclosure, catching a ride to the other side of the county and wandering through soybean fields.  Ty Harris said Sparkplug, a 200-pound African spurred tortoise, escaped from his fenced-in enclosure on the family’s Sardis City property on Thursday morning and went wandering down the road.  The family later learned that a man had found Sparkplug at the side of the road and transported the tortoise to his property in South Sauty, on the other side of Marshall County, and released him onto his 200-acre property.  The man who found Sparkplug later learned from social media that the tortoise was an escaped pet and contacted the Harris family.  Ty Harris said multiple area farmers reported spotting the tortoise wandering through their soybean fields.

A LIST FOR THURSDAY

What To Eat First Thing In The Morning To Reduce Anxiety

Huffington Post

  1. Avocado

“Avocados are deliciously versatile and loaded with a bit of everything,” registered dietitian Maya Feller of Maya Feller Nutrition told HuffPost. Not only do they contain healthy fat and fiber, but they also contain micronutrients like vitamin B6 (which helps create neurotransmitters like serotonin that stabilize our mood) and magnesium (which helps regulate the body’s stress response).

If you’re in a hurry, Feller recommends mashing avocado slices on rustic bread with a dash of cumin, black pepper and kosher salt. If you have more time, she suggests filling half an avocado with an egg, baking until the whites are firm and topping it with hot sauce for an added kick.

  1. Eggs

When eating eggs, don’t ditch the yolks: that yellowy-orange center contains minerals like choline and zinc, which have been associated with lower anxiety levels. Conversely, a zinc deficiency has been “shown to induce depression-like and anxiety-like behaviors,” according to a 2010 scientific review.

Two eggs contain 12 grams of protein, which helps stabilize blood sugar. Avoiding a blood sugar spike and crash is key, as it causes the body to pump out hormones like adrenaline and cortisol, which can exacerbate anxiety symptoms.

Scrambled or sunny-side-up eggs may be your go-tos, but Feller suggests changing things up by making a breakfast quesadilla.

“[Use] a stone-ground corn tortilla, spinach, cheese, onion and tomato sprinkled with a touch of smoked paprika,” she said.

Another option? Shakshuka — a Mediterranean baked egg dish with tomato, herbs and vegetables.

“The tomatoes and herbs also provide fiber that’s great for the health of your microbiome and additional nutrients,” said Samantha Elkrief, a therapist, holistic health coach and chef.

  1. Yogurt

Researchers in a 2015 study found a link between the consumption of fermented probiotic foods — such as yogurt — and a reduction in social anxiety.

“There is a link between the gut and the brain that continues to be researched,” Feller said. “Consuming foods that promote beneficial bacteria is thought to be supportive of both gut and brain health.”

For example, the vast majority of serotonin receptors are located in the lining of the gut. A deficiency in serotonin may lead to anxiety, depression or other mental health conditions, underscoring the importance of the gut-brain connection.

Opt for strained yogurt — i.e., the thicker kind, like Greek or Icelandic yogurt — that contains fat and more protein than regular yogurt to keep you satiated. Check the ingredients label for “live active cultures” — and “lactobacillus acidophilus” specifically — to ensure you’re getting those probiotic benefits.

“Try topping your bowl of yogurt with hulled hemp seeds, bee pollen, and pistachios, all of which are excellent sources of fiber and heart-healthy fats,” Feller said.

  1. Salmon

Fatty fish like salmon contain omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to reduce anxiety symptoms and surges of stress hormones like cortisol and adrenaline.

You could enjoy a savory breakfast of baked salmon and scrambled eggs, but if you like smoked salmon, that’s an option that’s available at most bagel shops.

“Salmon is anti-inflammatory and a good source of protein, too,” Elkrief said. “Pair with eggs for a healthy, hearty, nutrient-dense meal.”

  1. Oatmeal

Complex carbohydrates, like oats, are digested more slowly than simple carbohydrates, like pastries. They’ll keep you full while also helping you maintain that steady blood sugar curve.

“Not only are you starting your day with a hefty dose of micronutrients like calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium and B6, but this fiber-rich dish will also help to keep you satiated longer and support level blood sugars throughout the day,” Feller said.

You can enjoy your oatmeal hot or cold, depending on what you’re in the mood for.

“Opt for chilled overnight oats with two tablespoons of chia seeds, cinnamon and choice of plant-based milk,” Feller said. “Or cozy up with a warm bowl of oats topped with almond butter, banana, cocoa nibs, and a soft dusting of cardamom.”

  1. Berries

Blueberries, raspberries and strawberries are all rich in vitamin C, an antioxidant that may help reduce anxiety levels and improve mood, some small studies have indicated.

One way to get your vitamin C boost and a nutrient-dense meal to boot: Whip up a smoothie with berries, leafy greens (which contain magnesium), nut butter (for protein) and pumpkin seeds (for zinc), Elkrief recommended.

“The smoothie is rich in fiber and protein to help with maintaining steady blood sugar, all the ingredients are anti-inflammatory and you can add unsweetened yogurt or kefir for the additional benefits fermented foods provide to the microbiome and mood,” she said.

Foods That Could Make Anxiety Worse

You don’t have to banish these foods from your diet altogether. Enjoying them from time to time is just fine, but consider minimizing your intake.

Refined carbohydrates

Again, foods that cause that sharp blood sugar spike and subsequent crash are ones to avoid if you have anxiety. These include cereals and beverages high in added sugar and baked goods made from refined grains.

“Drastic drops in glucose levels often mirror symptoms of anxiety, so be mindful of the foods that cause these symptoms,” Feller said.

Plus, diets high in sugar tend to be less nutrient-dense, Elkrief said, “which means folks are missing out on the opportunity to eat foods that can support their brain health and mood.”

Coffee and energy drinks

The caffeine in these beverages can lead to restlessness and increased heart rate, which are also symptoms of anxiety. So they’re best consumed in moderation.

“Folks with anxiety are also more vulnerable to worsening symptoms from caffeine consumption,” Elkrief said. “Caffeine and energy drinks can also have a negative impact on sleep, which can worsen symptoms of anxiety.”

We all tolerate what we eat and drink differently, so some people may be more or less sensitive to the effects of caffeine or sugar. Figure out what works best for you.

“It’s important to remember that our experiences are unique and nothing happens in a vacuum, especially when it comes to nutrition,” Feller said. “We want to get to know our bodies so we can make choices that support our individual health.”
