Video Game Raises Millions For Ukraine

Fortnite announced Monday that it has raised $144 million in humanitarian relief for Ukraine.  The online video game raised the $144 million over the past two weeks, March 20-April 3, during which developer Epic Games said it would donate all of its proceeds from the game to aid people in need due to the war in Ukraine. Microsoft also agreed to contribute net proceeds of all sales of Fortnite content.  Epic Games raised $36 million from the online game on the first day alone, The Verge reported.  The money raised will go toward organizations providing humanitarian aid to people devastated by the war in Ukraine, including clean water and food, medical aid, basic supplies, legal aid and shelter, according to Epic Games.  These humanitarian relief organizations include Direct Relief, which provides medical relief, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), U.N. World Food Programme, UNHCR — The U.N. Refugee Agency, and World Central Kitchen.

Cardi B Deactivates Twitter

Cardi B has deactivated her Twitter account after the rapper argued with fans about not attending the Grammys on Sunday.  Fans online expressed disappointment at Cardi B not attending the Grammys where she was nominated for Best Rap Performance for her track “Up.”  Cardi B did not win with the award, which went to Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar for “Family Ties.”  Cardi B responded to the disappointed fans in now-deleted tweets.  “I’m deleting my twitter but On God I hate this [expletive] dumb [expletive] fan base,” Cardi B said at the time.  Cardi B also mentioned how commentators tweeted about her two children, who she shares with husband Offset.  “You got the slow dumb [expletive] dragging my kids all cause y’all though I was going to the Grammys and I didn’t the [expletive]? When the [expletive] I hinted I was going? Just [expletive] stupid I can’t I needs to protect myself,” she said.  “I’m not going to a award if I don’t got a new song to perform Or my album ain’t out…Next year,” she said in another now-deleted tweet.

Kanye West Drops Out Of Coachella

Kanye West has dropped out of Coachella as he seeks treatment following his online tirades against ex-wife Kim Kardashian.  Sources say he has dropped out of the lineup for the festival, which takes place over two weekends in Indio.  It was planned he would be joined onstage by Travis Scott, but we’re told neither will appear.  Rumors say that The Weeknd may replace Kanye as the headliner.   The source says “Kanye has definitely pulled out of Coachella. He hasn’t been rehearsing or putting on a production. Travis Scott was supposed to be joining him onstage.  Now it would be virtually impossible for him to get it together. Look for The Weeknd to replace him. Kanye is backing out because he wants to stay out of the public eye after all the drama with Kim and Pete, he wants to get help.”  Kanye had told Kardashian he was going to remain quiet and get help after publicly dragging her and her boyfriend, Pete Davidson, on social media.  Sources say he would not be “making any public appearances or inflammatory social media statements.”  Coachella is set to take place from April 15 to April 24th.

Martha Stewart’s Dogs Kill Her Cat

Martha Stewart was in mourning after her four dogs tragically killed her “defenseless” cat, which they mistook for an intruder. “Burying the beautiful and unusual Princess Peony,” the lifestyle guru wrote in a post to Instagram Sunday. “the four dogs mistook her for an interloper and killed her defenseless little self.”  She added, “i will miss her very badly . RIP beauty.”  She included a photo of Princess Peony’s burial in which three men were seen digging a hole in her yard.  She later shared a close-up shot of the late ball of fur lounging on a fluffy rug, simply captioning the post, “this was the Princess Peony.”  Interestingly, Stewart posted about her cats fearing her dogs just last August.  “My cats feel liberated because the four dogs are away on vacation. Leaving the cats alone in the house to roam, relax, recover !!!” she captioned photos of her cats, one of which appeared to be Princess Peony, at the time.

Did Kim K Meet Pete Davidson’s Grandparents?

According to TMZ, Kim Kardashian went to visit Pete Davidson while he was filming a movie in Staten Island, NY, which happened to be close to where his grandparents live.  They reportedly paid them a visit when the comedian was done filming for the day.  It wasn’t immediately clear if any of Davidson’s other family members were present for the gathering.  Her relationship with Davidson, which began in October 2021, has been getting more serious.  He’s been spending time with several people in Kardashian’s world, including Kris Jenner and Scott Disick.  Davidson was seen hanging with Kris back in November and Disick, the father of Kourtney Kardashian’s kids, has been posting videos from his hangouts with Davidson.  Most recently, Disick shared a video on Sunday of Davidson driving the Moke car Jenner had gifted Kim for Christmas.  And Davidson’s mom has shown her approval for Kim, even sharing on social media last month that she wants them to have a baby together.  However, a source told the website that Davidson has yet to meet Kim’s kids out of respect for their dad, Kanye West.

Thomas Markle Bashes Meghan and Harry

Thomas Markle has launched a blistering attack on Meghan and Harry for shunning Prince Philip‘s memorial service, calling the decision ‘unforgivable’ and a ‘slap in the face for the Queen’. They remained at their $14million mansion in Montecito while the rest of the Royal Family, including the Queen despite recent health issues, gathered in London for the event last week.  Thomas, speaking on his YouTube channel – said there was ‘no excuse’ for missing the service in Westminster Abbey.   ‘Attending and giving respect and giving God’s grace to Prince Philip for a lifetime of service was very important to the Queen, and for them to not show up was a slap in the face to the Queen,’ he said.  ‘It was unforgivable. The British people won’t forgive them for that, and they shouldn’t.  ‘I don’t know what the reason was, but there’s no excuse at all. It’s a slap in the face for the Queen and the British people.’  Harry’s failure to show up was also criticized by Richard Griffin, who spent 14 years as a royal protection officer for Prince Philip.  He said: ‘Prince Philip was their grandfather so William has obviously had a great training from him and is going to learn examples from him. I just hope Harry gets some of these things in his mind.  ‘It [Harry not being here] was a big disappointment for everybody. People were talking about it. Certainly around where I was people were saying he should have been here.  ‘All this nonsense about how he couldn’t get protection, as far as I’m concerned that was a pathetic excuse. He should’ve been here to honor his grandfather.”

Oldest Park Ranger Retires

The National Park Service announced the organization’s oldest active ranger has retired at age 100 in California.  The NPS said Betty Reid Soskin, who has served as a ranger at Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond for more than a decade and a half, officially retired at the close of her last day on the job Thursday.  “To be a part of helping to mark the place where that dramatic trajectory of my own life, combined with others of my generation, will influence the future by the footprints we’ve left behind has been incredible,” Soskin said in an NPS news release.  Soskin, marked her 100th birthday in September 2021, took a temporary position working with the NPS at age 84 and became a permanent employee in 2011, making her the oldest active National Parks ranger in the United States.  Soskin’s work at the park included hosting interpretive programs to highlight the histories of Black Americans and other people of color.

Library Book Returned After 50 Years

Officials at University College London said a library book recently mailed back to the school was nearly 50 years overdue.  Librarians said the book, an edition of the Latin-language play Querolus, was mailed back to UCL Libraries by an anonymous patron along with an unsigned note.  ‘Dear Librarian, I fear this book is some 50 years overdue! Please don’t just throw it out, now that I’ve taken the time and trouble to return it. It must be an ‘antique’ by now,” the note reads.  The book has originally been due back in the summer of 1974, officials said. The book would have accrued late fees totaling $1,648.56 at the rate of 13 cents per day.  Suzanne Traue, subject liaison librarian for UCL Libraries, said she returned to her office after 18 months of working from home to find the book among a stack of items that had been placed on her desk.

Man Gets 90 COVID Shots!!!

A 60-year-old man allegedly had himself vaccinated against COVID-19 dozens of times in Germany in order to sell forged vaccination cards with real vaccine batch numbers to people not wanting to get vaccinated themselves.  The man from the eastern Germany city of Magdeburg, whose name was not released in line with German privacy rules, is said to have received up to 90 shots against COVID-19 at vaccination centers in the eastern state of Saxony for months until criminal police caught him this month, the German news agency dpa reported Sunday.  The suspect was not detained but is under investigation for unauthorized issuance of vaccination cards and document forgery, dpa reported.  He was caught at a vaccination center in Eilenburg in Saxony when he showed up for a COVID-19 shot for the second day in a row. Police confiscated several blank vaccination cards from him and initiated criminal proceedings.  It was not immediately clear what impact the approximately 90 shots of COVID-19 vaccines, which were from different brands, had on the man’s personal health.  German police have conducted many raids in connection with forgery of vaccination passports in recent months. Many COVID-19 deniers refuse to get vaccinated in Germany, but at the same time want to have the coveted COVID-19 passports that make access to public life and venues such as restaurants, theaters, swimming pools or workplaces much easier.

Seal Captured In Long Island Town

The Southampton Town Police Department of Long Island, N.Y., apprehended a wayward seal that initially evaded capture.  The seal was captured Sunday morning after police received a call about a loose seal that was roaming the parking lot of a beverage store.  The mammal, identified as a juvenile harbor seal, fled southwest towards the Budget Host Inn after police arrived.  Authorities were then able to detain and capture the seal until it was taken into custody by the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation, the Southampton Town Police Department said on Facebook.  Police uploaded photos of the seal laying in the middle of the road and near a police car.

What You Need To Know About Aphasia

Aphasia is a condition that affects communication.

Aphasia is a disorder that stems from damage to parts of the brain responsible for speaking, writing and understanding language, the Mayo Clinic explains.

It often occurs after a sudden emergency, like a stroke (when the blood supply to the brain is disrupted) or head injury. But aphasia can also come on more slowly over time. It can affect people of any age, but is most common in those middle-aged and older. Estimates say roughly 180,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with aphasia every year.

 

The specific communication challenges people face can vary.

With aphasia, some people may speak in short or incomplete sentences or longer sentences that don’t make any sense. Other times, they might use unrecognizable words or seem unable to follow a conversation. All of that may extend to writing, too.

In general, people with aphasia tend to fall into one of three different patterns, according to the Mayo Clinic:

• Expressive aphasia (sometimes called Broca’s or nonfluent aphasia) in which people are better at understanding others than they are at speaking. They often struggle to get words out or speak in phrases, rather than complete sentences. For example, they might say things like: “Walk park today,” the Mayo Clinic explains.
• Comprehensive aphasia (sometimes called fluent or Wernicke’s aphasia) in which people tend to speak in long, complex sentences that don’t make sense. They may have difficulty understanding spoken language, and do not always realize that others can’t understand them.
• Global aphasia.People with this pattern tend to have poor comprehension and difficulty forming words and sentences, the Mayo clinic says.

 

Aphasia is usually the result of a serious brain issue, like a stroke, injury or tumor.

Aphasia is not something that just happens on its own; it is caused by damage to one (or more) of the areas of the brain responsible for language. Stroke is a common culprit. When the blood supply to part of the brain is stopped or greatly reduced, that prevents brain tissue from getting the oxygen and nutrients it needs to function — which can have an immediate, and sometimes lasting, impact on communication.  Serious head injuries are another possible cause of aphasia, as are brain infections.

But the condition can also develop over time, particularly if a person has a brain tumor or a progressive neurological condition, like Alzheimer’s.  Willis’ family has not provided any details beyond his aphasia diagnosis.

 

If you have any concerns, talk to a doctor ASAP.

Because aphasia is linked to extremely serious underlying brain issues, it is important to see a doctor right away if you (or a loved one) notices any changes in speech or cognition.

If you suddenly develop any of the following symptoms, you should seek emergency medical care immediately, the Mayo Clinic says, as they may be a sign of a stroke:

• Difficulty speaking
• Trouble understanding speech
• Difficulty with word recall
• Problems with reading or writing

Depending on a person’s condition, doctors may run tests like a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) scan to better understand what is happening. They may also run tests to gauge a person’s ability to answer questions and hold a conversation.

 

There are ways to treat aphasia.

Treating aphasia depends a lot on the root cause. For example, after a brain injury like a stroke, some people are able to recover significant function — including language skills — depending on what parts of the brain were affected and how extensive the damage was. Many people go to rehabilitation programs, which often include a speech pathologist (in addition to a team of medical providers) who can help with recovery.

In general, doctors will attempt to deal with whatever the underlying causes of aphasia are, and then help people regain communication skills to the extent it is possible.

“Aphasia therapy aims to improve a person’s ability to communicate by helping him or her to use remaining language abilities, restore language abilities as much as possible, and learn other ways of communicating, such as gestures, pictures, or use of electronic devices,” explains the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders. There are individual and group therapy options, as well as speech-generating technologies that can help people communicate throughout their days.
