NBC Airing Betty White Special
NBC has announced plans to air the special Celebrating Betty White: America’s Golden Girl on Jan. 31. The program will be available to stream on Peacock the following day. “Friends and stars will pay tribute to America’s comedy sweetheart in the special. The hour will include clips that best capture White’s irreverent tone, spirit and impeccable comedic timing that are a hallmark of her decades-long career,” the network said in a press release Friday. She died Dec. 31 at the age of 99. She was best known for her iconic roles on Hot in Cleveland, The Mary Tyler Moore Show and The Golden Girls. She was also a tireless advocate for animals.

Tiffany Haddish Arrested For DUI
Tiffany Haddish was arrested for allegedly driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol, police in Georgia have confirmed. Peachtree City Assistant Police Chief Matt Myers said officers responded to a call about a driver asleep at the wheel on a highway at about 2:30 a.m. Friday, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Police pulled over Haddish because her vehicle matched the caller’s description. She was stopped as she drove into the yard of a residence. TMZ said the star posted $1,666 bond and was released a few hours later from the Fayette County Jail. Haddish has not publicly commented on her arrest. People.com said the charges of driving under the influence and improper stopping on a roadway come as Haddish has been mourning the deaths of her grandmother, her dog, and her friends Bob Saget and Carl Craig. She is known for her roles in Girls Trip, The Kitchen, Night School and Like A Boss. She is the author of the memoir, The Last Black Unicorn, and host of the television show, Kids Say The Darndest Things.

AFV Pays Tribute To Bob Saget
“America’s Funniest Home Videos” paid tribute to original host, Bob Saget, in its first broadcast after his death. He died unexpectedly last week while staying in a hotel room in Orlando, Fla. Days after his friends, family and “Full House” co-stars laid him to rest, his other popular TV show remembered his contribution to the world of comedy with a brief montage. Current host, Alfonso Ribeiro, took a somber moment in the broadcast to honor his predecessor and mourn what his loss means to comedy and “AFV” fans. “As you’ve heard, the world lost a legend last week and ‘AFV’ lost a family member,” he began. “Bob Saget is synonymous with ‘AFV’ to this day and this show wouldn’t be the same without his unique sense of humor. It’s been my honor to continue carrying the torch that Bob so brightly lit.” With that, Ribeiro introduced a minute-long clip of “Bob being Bob” throughout his years hosting the show from 1990 to 1997. The clips included Saget bursting through a window, driving a tiny car onto the “AFV” stage and briefly interacting with a small monkey on his shoulder. The clip also included an interview Saget did with fellow former host Tom Bergeron. “By now, pretty much the world has heard of Bob Saget’s passing Sunday morning,” the tribute’s description on YouTube reads. “Bob was the backbone of a TV show that has gone onto entertain not only America, but the world. Disgraced actress Lori Loughlin and husband Mossimo Giannulli were robbed of $1 million in jewelry during a brazen break-in at their Los Angeles-area home, according to a report. She spent two months in jail in 2020 after being convicted in a college-admission bribery scheme; her fashion-designer hubby was imprisoned for five months for his role in the scandal. Surveillance cameras captured the burglars smashing a bedroom window at the home on Jan. 3, dressed in black with their faces covered in masks, according to TMZ. The intruders made off with a box of Loughlin’s bling. The break-in and robbery were discovered by a housekeeper, the report states. They were not home at the time of the heist. Cops believe the theft was executed by a gang of South American criminals who hit locations around the US, then escape the country ahead of authorities, TMZ reported.

Alec Baldwin Surrenders Cellphone
Alec Baldwin turned his cellphone over to Long Island police Friday — nearly a month after authorities secured a warrant for the device following a fatal shooting on the set of the movie “Rust,” according to officials. He surrendered his phone — which is believed to contain information about the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins in October — to the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office Friday morning, a spokesman for the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office says. “They will conduct the extraction of the data, and then hand the phone over to us,” said Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office public information officer Juan Rios. But not everything on his phone will be up for grabs during the probe, Rios said. “There will be some exempt information that’s not considered pertinent to the investigation, such as attorney-client privilege material, communications between Mr. Baldwin and his attorney as well as spousal privileged information.” The handover comes one day after the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release, “to date, the cell phone has not been turned over to authorities.” Police in New Mexico got a warrant for the cellphone on Dec. 16 and the case’s lead detective quickly notified Baldwin’s attorney, police said. But Baldwin failed to turn it over for weeks, forcing Santa Fe authorities to team up with the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office on Long Island last week to get it. On Jan. 8, the actor posted an Instagram video claiming he simply wanted his private communications protected.

Prince Harry Suing For Protection
Prince Harry is challenging a government decision that doesn’t allow him to personally pay for police protection when he and his family visit the UK. A legal representative for Harry released a statement Saturday about his choice to seek a judicial review, in which a court will examine whether the decision to bar him from paying for police protection out of pocket was made lawfully and fairly. “In the absence of such protection, Prince Harry and his family are unable to return to his home,” the representative said. When the duke and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, announced that they would step back as working members of the royal family in January 2020, they lost the UK taxpayer-funded security granted to senior royals. At the time, according to the representative, Harry offered to pay for continued police protection, but that request was not approved by the UK Home Office. On a trip back to the UK in July 2021, Harry’s security was allegedly compromised as he left a charity event because he didn’t have police protection, which was what prompted him to take legal action. The duke is still “willing to cover the cost of security, as not to impose on the British taxpayer,” the representative said. The threat is particularly high against the Sussexes in the UK from extremist groups as well as others fixated on the controversy around their leaving, their spokesperson said.

Men Busted For Smuggling Drugs In Baked Beans
Two men who tried to smuggle cocaine into Britain in cans disguised as baked beans and condensed coconut milk have been sentenced to a total of 15 years in prison, authorities say. British nationals Daniel Kelly, 43, and Steven Gilhooly, also 43, drew the sentences Wednesday at Snaresbrook Crown Court following trials earlier this month, according to London’s Metropolitan Police Service. Kelly was arrested in January 2020 while imprisoned on another charge and Gilhooly was arrested two months later. Each were charged in April 2021 with evading Britain’s prohibition on the importation of a Class A drugs into the country in connection with the scheme, authorities said. Kelly was sentenced to more than six years after pleading guilty while Gilhooly drew more than eight years imprisonment after being found guilty at trial. An investigation carried out jointly by the Met Police and the National Crime Agency determined the pair orchestrated a plan to smuggle nearly 3 kilograms of cocaine from the Caribbean island of St. Lucia into Britain by packing the drugs into cans labeled as food items such as baked beans and coconut milk. The cans were seized by customs officials in December 2018, prompting a probe that led them to discover that Kelly and Gilhooly had flown to St. Lucia shortly before the cans were mailed from there to addresses in Charlton and Greenwich in southeast London.

Dog Gives Birth To 16 Puppies
A British service dog charity said officials were shocked when a German shepherd gave birth to a litter of 16 puppies. The Guide Dogs National Center, near Leamington Spa, England, said the 16-puppy litter is about twice the average number for the breed. The charity said the puppies, born to a German shepherd mother and a golden retriever father, will spend time in volunteer foster homes and will be trained as guide dogs. The Guide Dogs National Center said the litter is the largest seen in the 60-year history of the charity’s breeding program. Guinness World Records lists the largest litter in history as 24 puppies born in Cambridgeshire, England, in 2004.

Oldest Tortoise
A tortoise previously declared the world’s oldest living land animal by Guinness World Records has been awarded a second title — the oldest tortoise ever. Jonathan, a tortoise that lives on St. Helena, a British overseas territory in the Atlantic Ocean, is believed to be at least 190 years old, as the animal was fully mature — at least 50 years old — when he arrived on St. Helena in 1882. The tortoise’s latest Guinness World Records title is officially “oldest chelonian,” a category including all turtles, terrapins and tortoises. The previous record-holder was Tu’i Malila, a radiated tortoise that died at the estimated age of 188 in 1965. The St. Helena government said Jonathan is blind and has lost his sense of smell, but eats well when hand-fed by his veterinary team. Veterinarian Joe Hollins said Jonathan still is active, and often enjoys the company of fellow giant tortoises David, Emma and Fred.

Fake Prince Charming Draws Police
A pair of feet sticking out of a rolled-up carpet – believed to be a body – turned out to be a mannequin dressed as Prince Charming. The suspicious object, spotted on the M11 motorway, prompted a call to Cambridgeshire Police, who were deployed to track down the car. When they found the vehicle, they were told by the driver of the vehicle that he was taking the dummy to a themed birthday party. Cambridgeshire Police said: “When we received a call on Saturday lunchtime to reports a vehicle was travelling along the M11 with a pair of feet poking out the end of a rolled up piece of carpet, alarm bells were naturally ringing for the informant and our control room. “We managed to track the vehicle down in Angel Drove, Ely where our officers discovered there were indeed a pair of feet… belonging to a mannequin dressed as Prince Charming who was on his way to a themed birthday.” See the pic HERE.

Nature-Inspired Names
Experts at The Bump echoed an observation from the baby naming site Nameberry: All that time cooped up during the pandemic has reignited an appreciation for nature and the great outdoors ― which seems to be influencing baby name choices. They highlighted nature-inspired names such as Wren, Ivy, Jasper, Parker, Sienna, Willow, Clayton, Hazel, Ashton and Laurel.
Vintage Names
The Social Security Administration maintains baby naming data going back to the late 19th century. The Bump noticed that some popular names from the 1950s are getting a little more love again, including Nancy, Sharon, Kathleen, Pamela, Margaret, Dennis, Terry, Wayne, Eric and Martin.
Strong and Confident Names
“One thing every parent wants is to raise a self-assured child ― so it makes sense that expectant parents are looking for names with empowering and noble meanings,” Aggarwal said, adding that examples of strong and confident names include Aria, Alice, Sloane, Nora, Emmitt, Rami, Valencia, Emma, Xavier and Milo.
Uplifting Names
Just as the pandemic has upped our gratitude for nature, the past two years have also given many people a yearning for joy and positivity in the future. Thus, The Bump’s trends data includes “names that inspire cheerfulness and optimism,” such as Chloe, Claire, Finnley, Alvin, Elsie, Felix, Isaac, Mira, Winnifred and August.
