Lori Loughlin Returns To The Red Carpet

Lori Loughlin attended the DesignCare 2022 Gala in Los Angeles on Saturday, marking her first red carpet appearance since the college admissions scandal.  She wore a dark blue, long-sleeved dress for the occasion, accessorizing with a rose quartz box clutch and strappy silver sandals.  She and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, pleaded guilty in May 2020 to bribing daughters Olivia Jade Giannulli and Isabella “Bella” Giannulli into the University of Southern California as fake rowing recruits.  After both serving time in prison, Loughlin and Mossimo were released in December 2020 and April 2021, respectively.  Loughlin’s last red carpet appearance was in February 2019 at The Women’s Cancer Research Fund’s “An Unforgettable Evening” Gala in Beverly Hills, Calif.  She attended the event with daughters Olivia Jade, 22, and Bella, 23.  Like Loughlin, it appears Olivia Jade has also been loving her own return to the spotlight in recent years.

Filmmaker Paul Haggis Detained For Sexual Assault

Oscar-winning filmmaker Paul Haggis — who directed the hit 2005 film Crash and co-wrote two James Bond films — has been detained in Italy as prosecutors look into claims that he sexually assaulted a woman there.  He was under house arrest at a hotel in Ostuni in southern Italy on Monday, where he’d gone for an arts festival. The woman who accused Haggis said that he assaulted her in a hotel room for at least two days.  Haggis, 69, faces charges of sexual assault and aggravated personal injury. Police said that the woman made the accusations after she was dropped off in Brindisi, purportedly by Haggis, and was found there acting strange in a “confused state.”  Haggis’ attorney Priya Chaudhry said that Italian law prohibits her from discussing details of the case.  “I am confident that all allegations will be dismissed against Mr. Haggis. He is totally innocent and willing to fully cooperate,” she told the Hollywood Reporter.

Nick Cannon’s Baby Mommas Trolled Him On Father’s Day

Two of Nick Cannon’s babies’ mothers trolled him on Father’s Day for welcoming multiple children in a short period of time.  Abby De La Rosa, who shares 1-year-old twins Zillion and Zion with him and is expecting a third child, posted a video on her Instagram Stories of herself and Cannon at a club.  She pointed out in the clip that the bottle service girls had brought out a sign that read, “He don’t pull out.”  De La Rosa then panned the camera over to Cannon who appeared in awe, and said to him, “Happy Father’s Day, babe.”  Meanwhile, Brittany Bell, who also has two children, Golden, 5, and Powerful, 1, with Cannon, sent the actor a Cameo video from “counting master” Soytiet, a social media star known for sending messages in which he counts numbers for birthday wishes, anniversaries and more.  “Great dad, just slow down,” Soytiet shadily told him in the clip.  Bell captioned the video on Instagram, “I couldn’t let this go to waste. To a father who could use some help counting…Happy Father’s Day. @nickcannon.”  Cannon laughed off the jab in the comments section, writing, “Yoooooooooo!!!! You are hilarious!!!! Best Fathers Day gift ever!!!

JLo Introduces Daughter Using Pronouns

Jennifer Lopez referred to her child Emme with “they/them” pronouns while introducing the 14-year-old to a Los Angeles audience on Thursday.  “I ask them to sing with me all the time but they won’t, so this is a very special occasion, because they’re very, very busy and booked and pricey,” she said while performing at the Dodgers Foundation’s Blue Diamond Gala. “They cost me when they come out.”  She continued using gender-neutral pronouns, adding, “They’re worth every single penny because they’re my favorite duet partner of all time. So if you would indulge me.” Lopez and her child subsequently wowed fans with a duet of Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years.”  Jennifer shares the 14-year-old and son Maximilian with her ex-husband Marc Anthony.  The teenage twins celebrated their birthday in February, with JLo gushing via Instagram that she is “so grateful” to have them in her life.

STUPID NEWS

Crab Whiskey

A New Hampshire distillery unveiled a new whiskey with an unusual key ingredient — invasive green crabs.  Tamworth Distilling said it teamed up with the University of New Hampshire’s NH Green Crab Project to develop House of Tamworth Crab Trapper, which is billed as being “made with a bourbon base steeped with a custom crab, corn and spice blend mixture.”  Steven Grasse, owner of Tamworth Distilling, said the developers boiled more than 90 pounds of the tiny crabs into a crab stock that was then fortified with Tamworth-made neutral grain spirits and distilled on a rotary vacuum.  “It has crab on the nose, for certain,” Grasse told Forbes. He said the taste is like “a briny and better Fireball.”  The crabs used for the liquor came from a Seabrook, N.H., trapper. Green crabs are native to Europe and are considered an invasive threat to the New England ecosystem.

Opossum Hitches A Ride On Semi

Animal control officials in Wyoming said a non-native opossum found hiding under a house likely hitched a ride on a semi truck from another state.  The Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release that Animal Control Officer Chris Thomas responded to the Western Hills neighborhood, west of Rock Springs, after a resident reported spotting an opossum under his house.  Opossums, the only marsupial native to the United States, are not generally found as far northwest as Wyoming, the sheriff’s office said.  Thomas, who nicknamed the opossum George, said she does not believe the male opossum to be an escaped pet.  “Rather, possums often seek refuge in dark, tight spaces, and she believes it most likely that George hitched a ride on a semi on the interstate and probably went looking for food when the rig’s driver stopped to rest or for fuel,” the news release said.

Viral TikTok Drink May Not Be Healthy

A viral drink trend that combines balsamic vinegar and soda water is being tested by curious foodies because some people claim it tastes like a “healthy Coke,” but dentists and dietitians are warning that it might not be as healthy as it seems.  TikTok user Amanda Jones brought attention to the unusual drink combo when she shared a video of herself making it on Tuesday, June 6. Jones tells viewers it’s a trusty recipe her Pilates instructor uses to stay away from traditional soda.  “It’s a healthy alternative to a Coke,” Jones said in her video. “I’m not joking with you, it tastes just like a Coke, and you’re going to think I’m insane.”  Jones used a guava-flavored sparkling water in her video, but she said the balsamic vinegar can be mixed with any flavor or sparkling water brand.  The video has since been viewed more than 6.4 million times and has led many others to try the recipe. TikTok users have conducted taste tests and have documented their reactions to the video-sharing app. Some agree with Jones that the recipe tastes like Coke or that it tastes delicious while others don’t seem to agree.  In a follow-up video, Jones clarified that she’s been making the drink for about two years, and she only uses a splash of balsamic vinegar, which is equivalent to about half a shot glass. While Jones’ viral drink recipe appears to have received approval from Italian American celebrity Chef Giada Pamela De Laurentiis, experts who care for teeth and balanced diets are sounding the alarm on the potential risks associated with vinegar and soda water.

Bus Driver High On Pot Gummies

A commercial bus driver has been charged with 38 counts of reckless endangerment after blacking out behind the steering wheel while snacking on gummies he says he didn’t know were infused with THC.  Jinhuan Chen appeared Tuesday in Bridgeport Superior Court after being arrested at his home in Boston.  He was driving 38 passengers from the Mohegan Sun Casino on March 13 when he stopped the bus on the side of Interstate 95 in Stratford. Police said they found Chen slumped unconscious in the driver’s seat, next to an open package of Smokies Edibles Cannabis Infused Fruit Chews.  Toxicology tests showed Chen had a high level of THC, the active ingredient in cannabis, in his bloodstream, prosecutors said.  Chen told Judge Ndidi Moses on Tuesday that he had no idea he had been snacking on anything but regular candy.  “I didn’t know it was marijuana,” Chen said through a Chinese interpreter, according to Hearst Connecticut Media. “I didn’t know.”

10 Foods You Should Never Cook On A Grill, According To Experts

HUFFINGTON POST

Flaky fish

Grilled fish is a summer staple for excellent reason, but certain types of fish work better on a hot grill than others. Joonas Jokiniemi, a former pro chef who runs grilling-advice site Grill Smoke Love, told us that “dry and flaky fish are not good for grilling. They are very delicate and easily stick to the grill grates and fall apart. In addition, they usually end up being dry and tasteless when grilled.”

Hank Shaw, a cookbook author and James Beard Award winner behind the podcast ”Hunt Gather Cook,” also pointed out that skinless fish fillets can be problematic on the grill. “Fish is so delicate that you need the skin to hold things together ― if you lose that, the meat flakes apart and will fall through the grill grates.”  Shaw explained that most freshwater fish ― including walleye, perch and bass ― fall into this category, as would black seabass, flounder, snapper and Pacific rockfish.

“All do work well if you have the skin on the fish, but even then, the trick is to not flip the fish,” Shaw advised. “Simply cover the grill and let the ambient heat finish cooking.” To be on the safe side, stick with fattier and more oily fish (like tuna and salmon) when cooking on the grill.

Brisket

A dense cut of beef from the chest and pectorals of the cow, brisket does best when it’s “braised or cooked slow,” said Ryan Cade, co-owner of the R-C Ranch digital butcher shop. Brisket tends to take on a tough texture when it isn’t given the time to break down its connective tissue and release its juices, which is why it’s best prepared Texas-style, or “slow and low on a smoker that regulates heat well,” Cade said.

Peeled shrimp

When cooked on the grill, shrimp takes on a beautiful level of smokiness that highlights its natural sweet and briny notes, making for an ideal warm-weather meal. However, the key to top-quality grilled shrimp is to keep the peels on.

Peeled shrimp doesn’t fare nearly as well on a grill, because “they tend to dry out too easily. They literally take one to two minutes on each side, and it’s easy to overcook them,” explained Mareya Ibrahim, a Los Angeles-based chef and cookbook author. Ibrahim said the best way to cook shrimp on the grill is to “keep the peels on and watch them closely, basting them to keep them from turning into little pieces of rubber.”

Scallops

Like shrimp, scallops are a challenge (and not always a justifiable one) on the grill, which is why Nathan Voorhees, chef de cuisine of Epping’s on Eastside in Lexington, Kentucky, doesn’t recommend them for this style of cooking.

“There are so many grilling taboos, but scallops come to mind first,” he said. “They are such a lean protein and cook so quickly. They tend to dry out on the grill, potentially ruining a beautiful ingredient.” Instead, get the most out of your scallops by pan-searing them while basting with butter, “which will yield that beautiful caramel crust and juicy interior.” Voorhees said.

Tofu

Meat-free grilling has never felt more possible or more exciting than it does right now, with plant-based patties reaching unprecedented levels of popularity. Unfortunately, not all vegan proteins are as well-suited for the grill as Beyond Meat and Impossible Meat.

“I see a lot of people try to grill tofu, but it falls apart and doesn’t turn out great,” Josh Healy, chef de cuisine of Loro Asian Smokehouse & Bar in Dallas, said. Instead, he prefers to “fry tofu, get it crunchy, and toss it with your sauce of choice.”

Leafy greens

When you select the right veggies for grilling, the end product is charred on the outside, juicy on the inside, and a delicious addition to a summer entree. Leafy greens, however, don’t fall into that category, despite many home cooks’ attempts to make grilled Caesar salads.

“If your grill is not ripping hot, the greens will wilt. In addition, you risk the greens falling through the grill grates,” said Brian Jupiter, the executive chef of Frontier Chicago and Ina Mae Tavern, both in Chicago. He said another way to char greens is to “use a cast iron pan on the highest heat on your stovetop. Or, if you’re set on using the grill, crank the grill up to its highest heat for 20 minutes, then place the cast iron pan filled with your greens on the grill grates to begin cooking.”

Melty cheese

Any cheese that’s capable of melting will create a huge mess on your grill, as Morgan Bolling, executive chef of cooking magazine and recipe database Cook’s Country, explained. “Cheeses that melt aren’t great for grilling, like halloumi or an aged provolone. But if it’s a melting cheese, it will melt right through the grill grates.”

Instead of grilling those melty cheeses on their own, go with a classic technique and put a slice of cheddar or American cheese on top of your hamburger as it sizzles on the grill.

Pork chops

Pork shoulder and pork ribs are grilling MVPs, but you might be surprised to learn that pork chops aren’t quite as grill-friendly as their tasty compatriots. “Contrary to popular belief, pork chops are not great on the grill because they have a lower fat content than the pork shoulder. Therefore, they can easily dry out,” said Jakob Esko, the resort executive chef of Gaylord Hotels. Searing your pork chops on a hot skillet and then transferring them to the oven to cook through is the best way to keep this cut moist and tender.

Bacon

Bacon already has a smoky flavor, so it should really come into its own on the grill, right? Well, the truth isn’t quite so simple, as Chris Riley, the recipe developer of barbecue blog Smoked Meat Sunday told us.

“Tossing bacon on the grill will most likely cause a fire, as the grease is easily flammable,” Riley said. “This can burn the bacon and ruin its taste before you can even react. Furthermore, a sudden fire can be quite dangerous. It’d be best to keep the bacon away from the grill. Simply cooking it in the oven or in a nonsticking frying pan will be easy, keep the bacon’s juices, and guarantee the best taste.”

Tomatoes

A tomato’s juiciness is among its most appealing characteristics, but it’s also a major source of dysfunction when grilling is involved.

“Tomatoes are rich and delicious when roasted alongside meat and veggies, but may fall apart or not hold their structure well when cooked over direct flame,” said Josh Aslanian, owner of Fireside BBQ and Appliances in California. “The mess and the dried-out effect won’t do you or your guests any favors.”
