DWTS Gets New Co-Host

Julianne Hough is returning to Dancing with the Stars — in a new role!  ABC announced on Monday that the actress and professional dancer will be returning to the Disney+ competition series as a co-host alongside Alfonso Ribeiro. The announcement comes three days after Friday’s news that Tyra Banks would exit the series after three seasons.  Hough previously starred as a professional dancer throughout five seasons of DWTS from 2007 to 2009. She later returned as a judge for six seasons between 2014 and 2021.  Banks announced that she was leaving DWTS after three seasons as host while chatting with TMZ on March 16.  “I feel it’s really time for me to focus on my business and my entrepreneurship, and also producing more TV — but behind the scenes,” Banks said in an interview with the outlet. “I think it’s time to graduate from the dance floor to the stock market floor … from the ballroom to the boardroom!”  Season 32 of Dancing with the Stars is set to premiere this fall on Disney+.

Michael Jordon Wanted Viola Davis To Play His Mother

Among basketball star Michael Jordan’s various requests for the film “Air,” director Ben Affleck revealed the sports legend’s big ask: Viola Davis had to play his mother.   “[Michael Jordan] said, ‘None of this would have ever happened without my mother.’ I said, ‘Who would you like to play your mom?’ He said, ‘Well, it has to be Viola Davis,” Affleck revealed during the film’s premiere at South by Southwest Film & TV Festival in Austin, Texas, on Saturday. “That’s like saying, ‘Can I play basketball on your court?’ ‘Yeah, if you get Michael Jordan.’ “Viola Davis is the best actor I’ve ever seen,” Affleck said.   Affleck stated that if he ever became a director after his decades-long career as an actor, he would want to cast Davis in one of his films.   “[T]hat would really be something. That would mean the world to me. And it does,” Affleck said.  “This is the best night of my professional life, and I want to welcome the best actor in the world,” Affleck said as he wrapped up his comments at the premiere, before bringing Davis onstage.

Gwyneth Paltrow In Court From Past Skiing Accident

Gwyneth Paltrow is standing trial for an incident at a Utah ski resort that prompted a skier’s lawsuit.  The trial is happening in Third District Court in Park City at 9 a.m. today (Tuesday) and is expected to last just over a week.  The $3.9 million-dollar hit-and-run lawsuit was filed in 2019 by a Utah man who claimed he sustained a brain injury in addition to multiple broken bones after Paltrow crashed into him on the Deer Valley Resort slopes in 2016. The suit states he suffered ” “pain, suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, emotional distress and disfigurement.”  Attorney Robert Sykes, who is representing retired optometrist Terry Sanderson, said in a 2019 interview that Paltrow was skiing out of control and “accepted no responsibility” as she left the scene of the crash.  Sanderson’s original lawsuit listed Paltrow, ski instructor Eric Christiansen, Deer Valley Resort Company LLC, and two other Deer Valley employees who were unnamed. The complaint alleged the ski instructor berated the injured Sanderson for “taking out Gwyneth Paltrow” and accused the man of filing a false report and failing to provide aid.  Paltrow in a public statement denied the allegations against her in the lawsuit “completely without merit,” and filed a countersuit that claimed it was she who was struck by Sanderson, not the other way around.  The lawsuit sought $1 plus court and attorney fees from Sanderson.

William and Kate Concerned For Son’s Role In Coronation

Prince William and Kate Middleton are reportedly in an “argument” over their oldest son Prince George’s planned appearance at King Charles’ “more inclusive” coronation on May 6.  They’re “worried that it will be too much for” the 9-year-old, according to royal commentator Tom Quinn.  He gave his hot take to the UK’s Express on Sunday, alleging that “there is a bit of an argument going on about whether George should play a more formal role” in the official crowning of King Charles.  Quinn claimed that William and Middleton are anxious over George’s role, hoping that it won’t paint a negative picture of the child in the eyes of the public.  The writer also noted that the pair are uneasy about George’s role because they feel like their son could still be too young to take on more royal duties.  “It’s almost an echo of the way William and [Prince] Harry were sometimes made to attend formal occasions that they shouldn’t have been made to attend,” Quinn said, referencing how William and his younger brother undertook many royal engagements in their younger years.

STUPID NEWS

Family Catches Great White Shark

A North Dakota family on a fishing trip in Florida reeled in a larger fish than they expected when they caught a great white shark.  While on a fishing trip in Fort Lauderdale this week, one of the members of the fishing party said that a big tug on his line alerted him that a larger-than-average fish had been hooked.  “All of a sudden. When it hit the one rod, it just hit it and it took off, so we knew it was something big,” Shaun Jacobson told WSVN.  He said that after 40 minutes of pulling, he and two other men in the party were able to pull in the great white. “We were alternating turns left and right, probably, what, 20 to 30 cranks, and then the next guy was on,” Jacobson said.  The men say they had hired Good Hit Sportsfishing hoping for an exciting time. But even the shop’s captain said catching a great white is a rarity.  “I’ve been doing this for 20 years full-time as a captain,” Capt. Adam Reckert told WSVN, “and that’s the second one that I’ve landed. The last one was about 15 years ago.”  The children on the boat named the big fish Cofax Crusher, one of the boys said.

Florida Man Answers Door and Gets Bit By Alligator

A Florida man answering a knock at his front door was promptly bitten by a 9ft long alligator when he opened it to see who was there.  Scot Hollingsworth, of Daytona Beach, told local TV station WKMG that he was watching TV with his wife when he heard a bump at the door and got up to investigate.  “I jumped up and headed over and opened the door, stepped out while trying to reach the lights and barely got out the door and got my leg clamped on and [it] started shaking really violently,” he said.  “It was just total surprise and shock,” he said. “I suspect I surprised the alligator as much as he surprised me.”   Hollingsworth was bitten in the upper thigh and taken to a hospital where he was treated for his injuries.  He is expected to make a full recovery.  The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission found the gator and later euthanised it.

Florida Woman Gets Revenge On McDonald’s

A woman was arrested Thursday night at a McDonald’s in Cocoa, accused of brandishing a gun in the drive-thru and pointing it at an employee due to an argument over a nonexistent menu item, according to the Cocoa Police Department.  An affidavit describes what responding officers were told by witnesses after arriving to find Quavi Young, 26, of Cocoa, behind the wheel with a gun in her passenger’s seat. The weapon was identified as an M&P Shield 9mm with a drum magazine capable of holding up to 50 rounds, according to the affidavit.  News 6 called the McDonald’s on Saturday, located at 927 Dixon Blvd., to ask what the fuss was about. We were informed that Young allegedly demanded a “cheeseburger bundle” — a sort of combo, similar to what can be done for McDoubles or McChickens — and refused an employee’s offer to sell her a cheeseburger and an à la carte order of small fries instead.  This occurred during the woman’s second appearance in the drive-thru lane that day, according to the employee on the phone and the affidavit. The employee described how things were “a little busy” in the drive-thru lane during the first encounter with Young.  The second time, the victim told police that Young pulled to the first drive-thru window after being told she couldn’t be served a meal that wasn’t on the menu. Once there, the victim asked Young what her problem was, to which Young brandished the pistol, police said.

6 Weather Apps That Professionals Actually Use

HUFFINGTON POST

  1. Weather.gov

Anthony Torres, a meteorologist and the director of science at Currently, a weather service, mainly relies on data and meteorologist-specific weather prediction models to prepare accurate weather forecasts and reports.  However, in a pinch, he uses the National Weather Service’s Weather.gov.  “If I haven’t put together a forecast, I use Weather.gov because I know that whoever put that forecast together is a meteorologist,” Torres said. “I don’t necessarily trust any particular model or computer output because there are things that computers can’t tell the difference yet with, and so having a meteorologist put together the forecast is usually my first step if I don’t have the time to do it myself.”

Although it’s technically a mobile site, rather than an app, you can similarly add Weather.gov to your phone’s home screen. iPhone users should navigate to mobile.weather.gov on their phone’s web browser, then click the “send” button at the bottom of the screen to choose “add to home screen.” Instructions for Android users are similar.

  1. RadarScope

Torres also likes RadarScope because it gives users access to satellite and radar so they can see where it’s cloudy or rainy or storming.  Though this app “tends to be a bit more on the technical side,” it’s helpful to meteorologists like Torres as it allows them to see exactly what the radar is seeing.

“I can do analysis on the data as soon as it comes in on my phone,” Torres said. “It’s really convenient.”

Gary Szatkowski, former meteorologist-in-charge at the National Weather Service and current Philadelphia forecaster at Currently, also uses RadarScope when he’s in a hurry.

“If you’re really into radar data, particularly the Doppler part of it, which shows you the winds and stuff, not just rain or snow, but more details about what the atmosphere is doing, RadarScope is a good option.”

  1. Weather

Carly Ruff, a day-of wedding coordinator based in Florida, prefers Apple’s Weather app on her iPhone.

A reliable weather app is especially important to Ruff, as she often coordinates both outdoor and indoor weddings, and she needs to know what weather to expect long before the event. As a day-of wedding coordinator, couples go to Ruff when they’ve planned almost their entire wedding and need help sorting things out over the last few months leading up to the big event.  “These weather apps are super important for me because I need to know if I need to get my couples a tent or not,” Ruff said, laughing.

She also noted the weather is usually “unpredictable” in Florida, so Ruff likes being able to rely on an app. “I’ve had a lot of instances where it says it’s going to rain all day and then it doesn’t, or it says it’s going to be a beautiful day, and then at the last minute it does rain,” Ruff said.

She said she appreciates Weather’s interface and the hourly view, as it lets her know exactly when she can expect rain or some other weather event. The app also marks the time of sunset each day, so she can let photographers know to take pictures around that time.

“Weather tells me exactly what’s happening when, which is super important for me because I need to know if we need to delay the ceremony at all,” Ruff said. “Or a few days before the wedding, if [the chance of rain] is looking like it’s over 70%, then I know that I should recommend the couple rent a tent or find a plan B.”

Ruff also likes using the app to check humidity levels so she can let makeup artists and hairstylists know beforehand, so they can figure out how to adjust.

“If it’s extremely high humidity, the curls aren’t going to hold as well, so I let the hair team know how much hair spray they’re going to need,” she said, laughing. “That’s a fun little trick.”

  1. AccuWeather

Ruff also likes AccuWeather as a second resource for radar purposes, so she can properly track any unexpected weather patterns.  “You just don’t know if it’s raining literally two miles away, but it doesn’t hit you on the beach.”  She primarily uses the app on the actual day of the wedding.

“If the ceremony is at 3 p.m., and I see dark clouds, I will pull up the app to see where that weather and rain are traveling,” Ruff said. “I need to see which direction it’s going in and if it’s getting closer to us, because then that ultimately means we need to either delay the ceremony or quickly find a plan B.”

  1. Windy

Megan Montero, chief meteorologist at Currently, also heavily relies on meteorologist-specific data and models. However, she is fond of Windy, a professional weather app that provides weather radar and forecasts specifically for wind and water sports. She likes that Windy is part model data and appreciates its clean way of presenting weather information.

“It just looks better, so it’s good to look at for a quick glance,” Montero said. “With traditional forecast data, I have to open up one model at a time, so Windy is great to use alongside those. It doesn’t really help me get or interpret forecast information, but just provides an easy way to look at all the model data at once.”

Montero said Windy is particularly good for non-scientists, as it has everything users would see in a normal weather app, but has feature add-ons to customize weather information viewing experiences. For example, users can look at the skycams in their area, wind maps, wind compasses, and wave forecasts as well.

  1. What The Forecast?!!

Rukmini Kalamangalam, a community organizer for Atlanta’s chapter of Asian Americans Advancing Justice, likes using the voice-y What The Forecast app. Whether she’s canvassing or organizing an event or drive, Kalamangalam frequently has to be outdoors for her job and likes knowing what to expect.

She said she appreciates What The Forecast because it has accurate weather and precipitation forecasts and weather alerts, as well as thousands of non-jargon-y phrases to describe the current conditions. It lets you know whether you need to bring an umbrella, spend some time in the sun, or if you should just go back to bed. “The app tells you the weather by cussing at you, and I like it because I feel like most weather apps are really boring and stale, and I prefer for my weather news to be a little quirky,” Kalamangalam said.  She also appreciates how the app helps her prepare for the weather outside, rather than just inform her of it.  “If it’s, say, 30 degrees outside, the app will tell me to throw on a coat, or if it’s hot outside, it’ll tell me to get ready to sweat,” Kalamangalam said. “[Otherwise] sometimes I look at the weather, and I don’t really internalize it. Like if a forecast says it’s 56 degrees, I don’t really know what that means. Then I go outside and it’s cold or windy, and I’m unprepared. It’s nice to have a little reminder to do something about the weather.”
