Top Gun: Maverick Big Box Office Results

Top Gun: Maverick is Tom Cruise’s first film to break the $100 million mark on its opening weekend.  It took an estimated $124 million at the U.S. box office in its first three days and is projected to take around $151 million by the end of the Memorial Day holiday weekend. Adding that figure to takings around the world, Top Gun: Maverick has so far made around $248 million.  It also achieved the fourth-biggest opening of the Covid-19 era following Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and The Batman, and therefore, the biggest opening of a non-superhero movie since the pandemic began.  The film was originally scheduled to open in summer 2020 but Cruise and the filmmaking team delayed its release until it could be shown in theatres, with them reportedly rejecting offers to premiere it on a streaming service.

Johnny Depp Performs Over The Weekend

Johnny Depp was spotted in England on Sunday where he joined Jeff Beck on stage for a surprise performance as the jury deliberates in his defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard back in the United States.  Videos posted on social video show Depp, guitar in hand, rocking out on stage during Beck’s concert, which took place in Sheffield, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Depp and Beck performed their 2020 collaboration “Isolation,” the videos appeared to show.  According to the Hollywood Reporter, Depp and Beck also performed a cover of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing.”  Jurors began deliberations Friday about 3 p.m. after listening to summations for more than four hours. Jurors deliberated for two hours Friday without reaching a verdict.  The seven-member panel, composed of five men and two women, was sent home for the long weekend.  Jury deliberation is expected to resume at 9 a.m. this morning (Tuesday).

Top Gun: Maverick Actors Not Allowed To Control Planes

The U.S. Navy allowed the “Top Gun: Maverick” studio to use F/A-18 Super Hornets for more than $11,000 an hour for the upcoming film, but Tom Cruise and his fellow actors were not allowed to touch the planes’ controls.  Cruise wanted all the actors portraying pilots in the movie to fly in one of the fighter jets, so they could know what it feels like to operate an aircraft under the pressure of immense gravitational forces. Cruise also flew in a jet for the original “Top Gun” in 1986.  Cruise was able to fly in several sorties for the new movie, but the Pentagon prohibits non-military personnel from controlling Defense Department equipment other than small arms in training scenarios, Pentagon entertainment media office chief Glen Roberts said. The actors were, however able to ride behind pilots after completing required training on how to eject from the jets in the event of an emergency and how to survive in the sea.  Roberts said the Navy allowed the film to use planes, aircraft carriers and military bases despite the script portrayal of the Top Gun pilots.  He noted that the real Top Gun pilots are studious airmen who put in long hours in the classroom and participate in intense training flights, a drastic difference from the rule-bending pilots portrayed in the movie.  Roberts explained that a movie “does not have to be a love letter to the military” for the Pentagon to cooperate, but it does “need to uphold the integrity of the military.”  Paramount Pictures said in the movie’s production notes that Cruise established his own flight training program to prepare the film’s young actors for the nausea-inducing rigors of plane maneuvers, and so they could perform their roles with “real Navy pilots taking them on the ride of their lives.”
*********If you ever have the chance… go for the ride along!! It is the ride of a lifetime!!
********They didn’t allow a bunch of crazy actors to control the planes?? What could go wrong??

Thomas Markle Home From The Hospital

Meghan Markle’s estranged father, Thomas Markle, was discharged from the hospital Saturday night, five days after suffering a stroke.  “I feel hugely grateful and know how lucky I am to be alive,” Thomas, 77, told the Daily Mail Sunday.  “I want to thank everyone, especially the wonderful doctors and nurses who saved my life. They are angels.”  He said he was “deeply moved” by the “loving messages” he received “from all over the world,” adding, “People have been so kind.”  The stroke impacted Thomas’ speech, as the newspaper reported he shared the message by “writing on a whiteboard with a felt-tip pen.”  “I can’t speak right now, but I am working hard and will thank people properly when I can,” he further explained.  While Meghan has not publicly reacted to the news of her dad’s health scare, a source claimed to the Daily Mirror Saturday that she is “concerned” and “wants to know if there is any way to contact her father privately, without other family knowing about it or having to get involved.”

Kate Bush Running Up The Charts

Thanks to “Stranger Things” Season 4, Kate Bush’s hit song “Running Up That Hill (Deal With God)” has finally made its way to the top of the charts for the first time ever. After the new season dropped of Netflix this weekend, the track originally recorded in 1985 soared to the No. 1 spot on iTunes and landed on streaming charts for the first time. It currently sits at 106 on Spotify’s Top 200, with 1,099,174 plays. The “Stranger Things 4” soundtrack – which also features the Talking Heads, KISS, and the Beach Boys, among others – holds the No. 5 spot on iTunes’ Top 200 Albums. The song first comes into play during the season premiere, when Max (Sadie Sink) strolls through her school hallways listening to it on her Walkman. The song returns a few episodes later, taking on added significance as she mourns her brother’s death and struggles to escape meeting the same fate.
********SPOILER ALERT!!! Her brother DIES???

Justin Timberlake Sells Off Music Catalog

Justin Timberlake recently sold the entire music catalog from his 20-year career to London-based firm Hipgnosis Song Management, per a company announcement Thursday.  The purchase includes all copyrights on tracks Timberlake has written or co-written. The deal also encompasses any music the “Suit & Tie” singer released in association with movies, television, streaming, cover music or performances.  The agreement, which includes the rights to around 200 songs, is worth $100 million.  The acquisition was made on behalf of Hipgnosis Songs Capital, a partnership between Hipgnosis Song Management and funds managed by private equity firm Blackstone.  The management company now holds the reins of his chart-topping hits like “Cry Me a River,” “SexyBack” and “Mirrors.”  “I am excited to be partnering with [Hipgnosis founder and CEO Merck Mercuriadis],” Timberlake said in a statement. “He values artists and their creative work and has always been a strong supporter of songwriters and storytelling. I look forward to entering this next chapter.”  He now joins the ranks of other entertainers like Bob Dylan, Shakira and Neil Young, who have all recently sold the rights to their music.

Reaper Chili Pepper Record

A California man put his love of spicy food to the limit when he broke a Guinness World Record by downing three Carolina Reaper chili peppers in 8.72 seconds. Gregory Foster took on the record for fastest time to eat three Carolina Reaper chilies at the Seaport Shopping Center in Downtown San Diego and ended up eating six of the super-hot peppers when his first attempt was disqualified.  Foster’s second attempt ended in 8.72 seconds, successfully taking the record from Canadian pepper fan Mike Jack, who ate three Carolina Reapers in 9.72 seconds.  The Carolina Reaper pepper has an average of 1,641,183 Scoville Heat Units, compared to 2,500-8,000 SHU for the average jalapeno.  “In practicing for an attempt like this it is more about mechanics and muscle memory, so I time myself eating small sweet peppers to get the chewing and swallowing down to automatic responses,” Foster told Guinness World Records.  See the video HERE.

Smallest Remote Controlled Crab

A team of Northwestern University engineers announced the invention of the world’s smallest remote-controlled walking robot, which measures only one-half millimeter wide.  The engineers said in research published in the journal Science Robotics that their crab-like robot is smaller than the thickness of a penny.  John A. Rogers, an engineering professor at the Evanston, Ill., school and co-author of the research study, said it took his team a year and a half to develop the tiny robots.  The robots can walk, twist, turn and jump. They are made of a malleable shape-memory alloy, which moves by changing shape when heat is applied. Rogers said the necessary heat comes from lasers.  “A laser is a convenient way to do it because we can focus the light to a very tiny spot, and we can scan that spot around to illuminate different parts of the robot’s body in a time sequence,” Rogers told CNN.  See them HERE.

Mona Lisa Attacked

A man seemingly disguised as an old woman in a wheelchair threw a piece of cake at the glass protecting the Mona Lisa at the Louvre Museum and shouted at people to think of planet Earth.  The Paris prosecutor’s office said Monday that the 36-year-old man was detained following Sunday’s incident and sent to a police psychiatric unit. An investigation has been opened into the damage of cultural artifacts.  Videos posted on social media showed a young man in a wig and lipstick who had arrived in a wheelchair. The man, whose identity was unknown, was also seen throwing roses in the museum gallery to guests.  The cake attack left a white creamy smear on the glass but the famous work by Leonardo da Vinci wasn’t damaged.  Security guards were filmed escorting the wig-wearing man away as he called out to the surprised visitors in the gallery: “Think of the Earth! There are people who are destroying the Earth! Think about it. Artists tell you: think of the Earth. That’s why I did this.”  The 16th-century Renaissance masterpiece has seen a lot in its over-500 years in existence.  The painting was stolen in 1911 by a museum employee, an event which increased the painting’s international fame. It was also damaged in an acid attack perpetrated by a vandal in the 1950s, and has since been kept behind glass.

The Most Common Grilling Mistakes And How To Avoid Them

Huffington Post

Mistake #1: Not cleaning your grill well or often enough

Like with any kind of cooking, cleaning up is the least fun part of grilling. But to ensure that the food you pull off your grill is safe to eat — and to protect the investment of your grill and the ingredients you put on it — it’s key to keep it well maintained.

A dirty grill invites a many unappetizing issues, including layers of unhealthy carcinogens, mold and bacteria, rust and other debris that affect the taste, quality and safety of your food — and can also attract pests. Letting excess grease build up can cause dangerous flare-ups and fires, which also affect flavor. “Nobody wants to have a flare-up when they’ve got $150 worth of gorgeous rib-eye on the grates,” Denton said. “Then it tastes like a toxic chemical fire, and smoke … but not the good kind.”

While nobody has time to clean their grill just as they’re pulling hot food off and serving, it’s important to give it a basic cleaning soon after every use (ideally later the same day but definitely by the next one). Hot grills are easier to clean than cold ones, and high heat also helps kill bacteria. So fire your grill back up, close the lid, wait for it to get hot and then scrape any debris off the grates using a wire grill brush. Denton says to look for a wide wire brush with a metal scraper at the tip and a sturdy, angled handle so it allows you to put some force into it as an extension of your entire arm — not just your wrist. To avoid flare-ups, you also want to empty the grease trap every few uses.

For seasonal grillers, Denton also recommends doing a deep clean a couple times a year (more often if you use yours year-round). He fills a large, heavy-duty bucket with degreaser, soaks the grates and gives them a good scrub. “You want to do it outside instead of in your kitchen sink. You’ll have grease and jagged, charred bits flying all over the place, and you don’t want them going down your kitchen drain.”

For a gas grill, the next step is to break it down to remove and soak smaller components like the burner covers in degreaser. Charcoal grills should get emptied of ash and other debris. For both types, you also want to wipe down the interior and exterior with a mild soap-and-water solution.

It’s a messy job, but it will keep your grill in top shape for a few months.

Mistake #2: Not knowing your hot spots

Learning which parts of your grill burn hotter than others is key to successful grilling, but figuring it out can be tricky.

Martinez recommends this simple but clever test for a gas grill: Lay slices of inexpensive sandwich bread on the grates of a cold grill, “tiling” the surface until it’s completely covered in a single layer. Close the lid and turn all the burners to medium: You want the temperature to reach about 350 degrees.

Once you smell toasty bread, turn all of the burners off. Using tongs, flip each slice of bread over ― you’ll notice where the hot spots are based on what slices are more burnt (the same test works on charcoal grills and ovens). Take a photo so you have a record of your grill’s heat map.

Mistake #3: Anxiously poking, pressing, over-flipping and opening the lid too often

It’s all too tempting to check on the progress of your food while you’re standing idle at the grill, but those impatient habits only hamper the results.

Poking, prodding and over-flipping prevent food from getting a good sear or crust and increase the chances of breaking and sticking. Opening the lid too often causes heat loss and temperature fluctuations, which delay how quickly and consistently your food cooks.

An even worse sin, if you ask Martinez, is pressing food into the grates for the thrill of the sizzle. “It hurts my heart to see someone pressing meat on the grill, or even vegetables for that matter,” he said. “All those juices that you see dripping out are what would have been that succulent, tender, juicy interior that you’ve now cast off into the flames.”

Instead, leave food undisturbed until it’s ready to flip or take off the heat. Set a timer and don’t touch your ingredients until it goes off. In the meanwhile, distract yourself by tidying up your cookspace or sipping on a drink until you hear the buzzer.

Mistake #4: Forgetting to create heat zones

It’s essential to have a zone with less heat so you can move ingredients that are done or are cooking more quickly than the others, to a cooler spot. For gas grills, that simply means setting some burners to medium or high heat, and turning others off or to low heat.

For round charcoal grills, Denton advises that instead of positioning hot coals in the middle like in the shape of a sun, push them to one side in the shape of a half-moon so that you have a cooler zone with indirect heat at one side.

Mistake #5: Not keeping everything you need within arm’s reach

We’ve all had that moment while manning the grill where we realize we’ve left the tongs, a clean platter or the barbecue sauce inside — usually at a very inconvenient time.

Ensure you won’t have to step away from the fire by doing a quick equipment check before you get started. Denton likes to gather everything on a sheet tray.

“Before you start cooking, make sure you’ve got your spatula and other tools, a towel and your glass of wine … which might be the most important,” he said. “And if you need to wash the platter you brought the raw chicken out on for serving, grab a wingman so you don’t have to step away from the fire.”

Mistake #6: Losing food through the grates

Who hasn’t lost a pricey sea scallop or perfectly grilled mushroom through the grates? Insure yourself against food loss by investing in skewers and a grill basket.

Martinez likes using grill baskets to perfectly char whole fish without tearing the delicate skin and flesh. When cooking shrimp, he uses two skewers (one positioned at the tail end, the other at the head), which both stabilizes the shrimp and minimizes the work. “That way, instead of flipping 40 individual shrimp, with just one turn and a couple minutes, you’ve got a pound of perfectly cooked shrimp that won’t fall into the fire. And, you’re done with dinner.”

Mistake #7: Prizing grill marks over doneness

Somewhere along the way, we came to think of cross-hatched grill marks as the pinnacle of grilling success. But the truth is that those elusive marks often come at the price of doneness and flavor.

“Getting that cross-hatching on both sides of burgers or steaks means flipping them four times, and you lose flavorful juices every turn,” points out Martinez. ”Plus, no one is going to be impressed by those marks if, when they cut into their steak, it’s overcooked. They’re going to be looking at the interior. And if you have a beautiful, pink, medium-rare interior ― that’s the money shot.”

If you can’t give up dark grill marks, you’re better off going for a single set on each side and doing what Denton does at home and in his restaurants: He cooks nearly everything 70% of the way on the first side, finishes it on the second and then plates it with the first “presentation side” with darker marks facing up.
