Ellen Begins Her Apology Tour

Ellen DeGeneres issued a public apology while addressing allegations that The Ellen DeGeneres Show was a toxic workplace.  She said in a monologue during the Season 18 premiere Monday that the show is “starting a new chapter” in the wake of the reports.  “As you may have heard, this summer there were allegations of a toxic work environment at our show, and then there was an investigation. I learned that things happened here that never should have happened,” DeGeneres said.  “I take that very seriously, and I wanna say I am so sorry to the people who were affected,” she added. “I know that I’m in a position of privilege and power and I realize that with that comes responsibility, and I take responsibility for what happens at my show.”  She said The Ellen DeGeneres Show has made “the necessary changes” after weeks of conversations with the show’s 270 staff members.  “Today, we are starting a new chapter,” she said.  See the whole thing HERE.

Cardi B’s Daughter Gains Many Instagram Followers

Cardi B and Offset’s daughter, Kulture, is on her way to being Instagram-famous at only 2 years old.  On Saturday, the “WAP” rapper announced that she created an account for her child on the social media app.  “Follow @Kulturekiari new IG…soo much cool bute baby stuff coming up,” Cardi B wrote.  Within 24 hours, Kulture amassed half a million Instagram followers.  As of this writing, the 2-year-old has over 680,000 followers, with the numbers growing by the hour.  In the bio for the toddler, it was revealed that the account is managed by Cardi, that Kulture likes “everything pink” and that she is “spoiled.”  The 2-year-old only follows her mother and father, Offset.  Cardi’s sister, Hennessey Carolina, joked in the comments of one of Kulture’s photos, writing, “Excuse me miss ummm you look soooo cute but umm…. why you not following your aunt? you think you grown?  Some of the toddler’s posts include her showing off her “swag” wardrobe, diamond jewelry and a video of Kulture scrolling on phone “making sure my mommy don’t post nothing embarrassing on my page.”

Lowest Emmy Ratings

Sunday’s virtual 2020 Emmy Awards were also a virtual loser for ABC.  An average audience of 5.1 million viewers watched the socially distant ceremony, down from last year’s already record low of 6.9 million, according to TV Line. With few surprises — save for “Euphoria’s” Zendaya’s shocking upset in the Best Actress in a Drama category — and an uneven array of best and worst moments, returning host Jimmy Kimmel and the pandemic-sidelined virtual victors were unable to stop the ratings slide from 2019. It seems the cardboard cutouts on hand for Kimmel’s opening monologue may have been paying more attention than the folks who actually tuned in.
*******The audience is now HALF what it was in 2016!! Not good!!

Meghan Markle Calling People To Vote

Meghan Markle has been cold-calling Americans urging them to vote in November, Gloria Steinem has revealed.  Steinem said Meghan and the family moved to Los Angeles so she could participate in November’s presidential election — and has been active both in front of and behind the cameras to help elect Democrat Joe Biden and his vice-presidential running mate, Kamala Harris.  “[Markle] came home to vote,’’ Steinem told TV’s “Access Hollywood’’ in an online video posted Sunday, noting that the pair have met up at the women’s rights leader’s house.  “And the first thing we did, and why she came to see me, was we sat at the dining room table here, where I am right now, and cold-called voters. And said, ‘Hello, I’m Meg,’ and, ‘Hello, I’m Gloria,’ and, ‘Are you going to vote?’  “That was her initiative,’’ Steinem said.  “She is such an inspiration to me.’’

Wendy Williams Shows Off Weight Loss

Wendy Williams revealed she lost 25 pounds over the course of quarantine and showed off her fit figure during her eponymous talk show’s 12th season premiere on Monday.  “Food became disgusting to me,” she explained. “I was cooking at first and it was all good, I was shoveling stuff in my mouth.”  Williams documented her elaborate meals on Instagram, but admitted it became too much after a while.  “Everything from hot dogs to lobster,” she explained, “but then it became I’m done with food.”  Earlier this year, when Williams attempted to film her show from home, she taped herself eating lollipop lamb chops in a bizarrely sexual way.  “Watch me eat. Watch me eat,” she said at the time, licking her lips. “You know you want to watch.”  At some point, she decided to put down the lamb chops because ahead of a routine colonoscopy, Williams had to be weighed by her doctor and realized how much weight she had lost over the past few months.  “‘I haven’t weighed this little since high school,’” she recalled. “I feel really good, but I’m just alone in my romance.”

Get Paid To Drink Beer

Beer brand Michelob Ultra said it is seeking a “Chief Exploration Officer” to get paid $50,000 to explore U.S. national parks while drinking beer.  The company said the “Chief Exploration Officer,” or “CEO,” will spend six months traveling through national parks in a camper van equipped with a bathroom, shower and a fridge filled with Michelob Ulta Pure Gold Organic Light Lager.  The company said the camper van and gas money will be provided for the CEO, as well as a salary of $50,000 plus expenses.  “We know some people prefer to enjoy the outdoors alone, but if it helps improve the trip, our CEO is more than welcome to bring along a friend, spouse, partner, or even a dog,” Michelob said in the posting.  The posting said the company is seeking someone with a love of the outdoors and a strong sense of direction.  The parks to be visited by the CEO include Yosemite, Sequoia, Joshua Tree, Big Bend and Saguaro.  Applications are being accepted through Sept. 30.

D and D Game Lasts Almost 40 Years

A lifelong Dungeons & Dragons fan in Canada is celebrating a big anniversary — 38 years of running the same ongoing game.  Robert Wardhaugh said he started running his campaign of the fantasy role-playing game — which relies on dice, characters created by players and a lot of imagination to advance — in 1982, when only four players participated in the group.  “The players control their character, but that’s all they control,” Wardhaugh told CNN. “I control all the other aspects, whether it’s the weather, whether it’s the setting, anything they’re facing.”  Wardhaugh said he now runs two to four sessions each week over Zoom for his nearly 60 active players.  The Dungeon Master said the game started out by following the original 1982 version of the Dungeons & Dragons rules, but has since developed its own set of rules as the campaign evolved.  He said his 38-year-long game is likely a record for Dungeons & Dragons, as he hasn’t heard of another game that’s come close to the same length.  “One of the things that sets my game apart from all other games is that the only thing that’s going to limit it, I suppose, is my lifespan,” he said.
********Wow…. a great use of a life!! Just sayin’!!!

Alpaca Interrupts Soccer Match

An alpaca escaped from a farm in Britain and traveled to a local soccer field, where it interrupted a game just before halftime.  The game between Carlton Athletic and Ilkley Town in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, England, was paused about five minutes before halftime Saturday when the loose animal made a 20-minute visit to the field.  Claire Armstrong, wife of Ilkley’s first team coach and the team’s COVID-19 officer, captured video of the alpaca being chased around the field by players, coaches and officials.  Witnesses said the alpaca, named Oscar, was eventually escorted off the field by its owner and play resumed.  Ilkley went on to win the game 2-0. The team said it is now considering making an alpaca its mascot.  See the video HERE.

Man Trapped With Handcuffs

Police in Britain responded to an early morning call from a man who became trapped in a pair of handcuffs in an apparent case of romance gone awry.  The Greater Manchester Police’s Rochdale station said officers responded to a home at 4:30 a.m. Friday to help a couple having difficulty with a pair of handcuffs.  “Male phoned requesting help as his girlfriend had locked him in some handcuffs and they couldn’t now find the key,” the department’s tweet said. “Wanted police as he feared the fire brigade would cut them and they were expensive.”  Police said the man was “released” from the cuffs, but the department did not say whether the expensive restraints were damaged in the rescue.

How Not To Be A Jerk During Your Kid’s Remote Learning

Huffington Post

  1. Don’t micromanage.

In non-COVID times, parents and caregivers drop our kids off at school, leave them there for a stretch, then reconvene without a crystal clear accounting of every minute or activity. With remote learning, of course, it is all going down at your kitchen table or in your living room. It can be easy to hover.

But fight the urge to micromanage. Your child’s teacher is their teacher. Let them do their job. Fiske noted that when parents go into classrooms and volunteer during non-COVID times, their child’s behavior often changes. You have to give them space to be who they are without you around.

“Some parents are definitely sitting there, trying to make their kid pay attention the whole time,” she said. (Instead, here are some tips that can actually help.)

Of course, how hands-on you have to be depends a lot on your child’s age. A kindergartner may need someone there in a way a 5th grader doesn’t. Fiske said it’s helpful to just ask your child’s teacher how hands-on they’d like you to be — so long as that teacher understands it may not happen, because you also have your own work to deal with, other children to watch, etc.

  1. Mute.

It’s so basic, but so important: Kids need to be muted when they’re supposed to be, and they need to be able to un-mute at the right time, as well. Depending on the platform, teachers have a lot of control in this regard.

But it is also on parents to make sure they’re practicing with their kids so that muting/un-muting becomes as second-nature as raising a hand.

Bigger picture, it is important to make sure your child understands how to use the technology. (Although there have definitely been big problems with glitches, delays, passwords… and so on.)

  1. Think before you act.

Fiske told the story of a teacher who was working with a student to do an informal assessment of where his current math skills are, using materials that said “second grade” on them. The student, who is in third grade, got upset and told his mother. She promptly began texting the teacher — in the middle of a lesson.

“She started, like, blowing up the teacher’s phone… then the mom started blowing up my phone,” Fiske said.

“If the kid was in school, he would have been upset for a minute or two, and still made it through,” she added. “Parents need to have perspective on how many people are in the ‘room’ and what is really worth disrupting an entire lesson for.”

So ask yourself: Does this rise to the level of being something I’d actually go in to discuss with my kid’s teacher during non-COVID times? If so, do it — but at the right time. Don’t interrupt teachers while they are busy doing their job.

  1. Don’t get in your kids’ way.

“There have been all these articles written about how hard it is for parents to work with their kids at home, and it is. But what I’ve been sensing is that it can be hard for the kids to learn because the parents are in the way,” Fiske said.

Just walking through the frame in the background a lot can be distracting. And not just for your learner, but for their classmates. Be mindful of what’s happening in the frame.

Of course, this is just one reason why giving your child a dedicated learning spot — one that they use consistently — is important, if you can swing it.

  1. Be patient with teachers — and respectful of how hard they’re working.

Whether they are hybrid or fully remote, teachers are flat-out right now. They’re putting in extremely long hours and dealing with never-ending changes. We parents need to be mindful of that.

Communication is important this year, but not at all hours. Being hands-on is great, but not so hands-on that we are unintentionally making an already impossible year worse.

“Parents [who are] communicating a lot more about things they would never communicate about if we were learning in-person is eating up a lot of teachers’ time,” Fiske said. “They’re exhausted. They’ve been online all day, then they’ve got 100 emails.”

“Obviously talk to the teacher and communicate,” she added, “but also know: when is it something the kid needs to talk to the teacher about — and navigate — on their own?”
