Nirvana Wins Naked Baby Lawsuit

Nirvana has won a final dismissal of the child pornography lawsuit over the cover of the grunge band’s 1991 album Nevermind, which depicts a four-month-old naked baby.  The lawsuit was filed by Spencer Elden, who was depicted on the album cover, in a California federal court last year and named the band’s surviving members, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic, as well as Courtney Love — the widow of late lead singer Kurt Cobain and executor of his estate.  Elden, 31, argued in the lawsuit that the infamous image amounted to child pornography, that his parents never signed a release for the use of his image and that he never received any compensation. His lawsuit sought $150,000 in damages.  Rick Elden, his father, told NPR in 2008 that Kirk Weddle, a friend of his who took the photo, paid him $200 to throw his son into the pool for the shot.  The band’s motion to dismiss then had said Elden profited from being on the album cover, that the statute of limitations had already passed and that the image is not sexually exploitative.

Details Of Anne Hache’s Death

Anne Heche was trapped in the Los Angeles home she crashed her Mini Cooper into for 45 minutes as it burned, records reveal.  NBC4 published timestamped audio files on Thursday of the Los Angeles Fire Department’s response to the crash.  “Given the heavy fire and smoke conditions, it wasn’t that you could clearly see into the vehicle or clearly be able to access it,” Deputy Chief Richard Fields told the outlet of the scene.  According to the recordings, the LAFD arrived at 11:01 a.m. that day and realized within seconds that a person was “stuck inside the vehicle” — although Fields clarified that the dispatcher was referring to Lynne Mishele, the owner of the home, at the time.  While the firefighters believed at 11:18 a.m. that there were no other victims, Heche was spotted at 11:25 “pushed up against the floorboard” and “inaccessible” in her car.  “Where the person was in the vehicle was not in the driver’s seat, but on the floorboard of the passenger seat,” Fields said Thursday.

Chris Rock Responds To Will Smith’s Apology

During a show at London’s O2 Arena, Chris Rock publicly addressed Will Smith’s recent YouTube video where he apologized to Rock for slapping him onstage at the Oscars.  Rock brushed off the YouTube upload, saying “f*ck your hostage video.” Rock’s set was followed by comedian Dave Chappelle, who was also attacked on stage back in May by an audience member. “That was some scary sh*t,” he said.  In the nearly six-minute YouTube video, Smith said that he had encouraged Rock to reach out to him to discuss the slap, which took place in March. “The message that came back is that he’s not ready to talk and when he is he will reach out,” explained Smith, who then directly apologized to Rock. “My behavior was unacceptable and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk,” he said.

Promotion Brings Fans Back To The Movies

A $3 movie ticket promotion meant to boost sales across cinemas during a typically sleepy weekend for the business has drawn in 8.1 million customers, according to the National Association of Theater Owners.  By those numbers, Saturday was the best day of the year for movie theater attendance, the group said.  Movie theaters pulled in $24.3 million in ticket sales from the National Cinema Day promotion, according to Comscore. The media analytics company said that was a 9% increase from the previous week.  More than 3,000 cinemas and 30,000 screens in the U.S. participated in the initiative, including major chains like AMC Entertainment and Regal Cinemas as well as independent theaters. Featured films included Paramount’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” Warner Bros Discovery’s “DC League of Super-Pets” and Sony’s “Bullet Train.”

Thomas Markle Says Meghan “Dumped Me”

Thomas Markle has slammed his estranged daughter Meghan after the former actress claimed she has “lost” him since marrying into the Royal Family, firing back with: “she didn’t ‘lose’ me, she dumped me.”  It comes after the Duchess of Sussex discussed her non-existent relationship with her dad in a candid interview with New York magazine’s The Cut which published last week.  “When I ask about it, Meghan doesn’t stay in her sadness for long; instead, she uses it to discuss how toxic tabloid culture has torn two families apart,” Allison P. David wrote.  “Harry said to me, ‘I lost my dad in this process.’ It doesn’t have to be the same for them as it was for me, but that’s his decision.'”  Speaking to the Daily Mail on Saturday, he hit back saying: “She didn’t ‘lose’ me, she dumped me.  “I am not lost. She knows where to find me. My number hasn’t changed. I would love to hear from my daughter and meet my son-in-law and my grandkids for the first time.”
*******When he can write her a check for $100 million, she’ll think about it!!!
*******What she means is: “I don’t want people to remember that my father is a fat white guy!!!”

Police in Texas captured an alligator found lurking next to an ATM and hissing at customers making withdrawals.  The Lake Worth Police Department said in a Facebook post that a woman who used the ATM reported hearing a “hissing” sound while withdrawing money, and officers arrived to find a 3 1/2-foot alligator lurking next to the machine.  A Texas Parks and Wildlife game warden was summoned to the scene and helped the officers subdue the alligator.  The gator was relocated “to an appropriate habitat nearby.”

News Anchor Swallows Fly

A Canadian news anchor swallowed a fly during a recent TV broadcast, but still continued with her reporting.  Global News anchor Farah Nasser revealed Monday on her Twitter page that the insect had flown into her mouth, and included a now-viral clip of the incident.  “Sharing because we all need a laugh these days. Turns out it’s not just @fordnation, I swallowed a fly on air today,” she wrote, referring to a recent instance in which Ontario Premier Doug Ford swallowed a bee while on camera.  After swallowing the fly, Nasser paused, scrunched her face, gulped and then resumed her news story.  The anchor noted in her social media post that the situation was “Very much a first world problem given the story I’m introducing.”  Nasser said during a recent TV interview that she could feel the fly “fluttering in the back of my throat” and that it “wasn’t going down — it was just stuck!”  See the video HERE.

Florida Man In Boxers Breaks Into Pizza Joint

A Florida man was arrested after breaking into a Little Caesars wearing nothing but boxer shorts and socks. Prior to being arrested he added an employee apron to his look.  Chad Corn, 35, entered a Little Caesars near Pensacola after hours through an “unsecured” front door. He was wearing only boxer shorts and socks when he entered the empty restaurant. Once inside he grabbed two bottles of water, a brownie, and an employee apron.  According to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, who shared a light-hearted breakdown of the events on Facebook, the door locked behind Corn after he entered the restaurant.  “With his collection of stolen items, he makes his way to the door. This is where the poorly planned escapade begins to unravel,” the post read.  After being locked inside of the Little Caesars, Corn tried and failed to escape through the ceiling. He eventually fell through the tiles to the floor below. This setoff the security alarm.

7 Ways to Get Expensive College Application Fees Waived or Reduced

THE PENNY HOARDER

3 Ways to Get a College Application Fee Waiver

If the cost of applying to college isn’t in your budget, there are options. Many schools offer college application fee waivers to low-income families and those who may need financial aid.

Here are just a few ways you can snag a waiver for college fees and details on how to apply.

  1. Qualify for a College Board Fee Waiver

If you qualified for the College Board SAT or ACT fee waiver, chances are you also qualify for fee waivers to over 2,000 schools nationwide. The process is straightforward, said Tobi Kinsell, senior executive director for College Advising Corps.

“A student with financial need may request an ACT or SAT test fee waiver before signing up to take the SAT or ACT,” Kinsell said. “When the student requests a test fee waiver, they are also eligible to receive college application fee waivers from participating colleges.”

There’s no limit to how many College Board application fee waivers you can use. Simply print the waivers at home or school and include them with the application to a qualifying school.

  1. Get a Guidance Counselor to Sign Off on a Fee Waiver

In addition to the SAT and ACT college application fee waivers, ACT (American College Testing) provides a form to request a fee waiver or deferral that high school guidance counselors sign and students submit to colleges.

Just keep in mind filling out the form is not a guarantee the school will honor it. Students should follow up with the college admissions office to confirm the application fee has been waived.

  1. Just Ask for a College Application Fee Waiver

Sometimes all you have to do is ask. Most schools don’t want application fees to stand in the way of students applying. So call the college admissions office and ask if they’ll extend an application fee waiver as a courtesy.

Many colleges automatically qualify certain students for fee waivers, such as veterans and those in good academic standing. Students who live in federally subsidized housing or those who are wards of the state also usually qualify for fee waivers.

4 Ways to Save Money on College Application Fees

Even if you don’t qualify for waived application fees, there are other ways to cut costs when applying to colleges. These tips can help you save a little money now to put toward that college tuition bill later.

  1. Apply Through the Common App or Coalition Application

Common App and the Coalition Application are two different apps that remove barriers to college applications for all students. These application processes save time and, in some cases, money by enabling students to apply to several schools at once.

When you fill out a FAFSA (the application for federal student aid), the Common App and Coalition App platforms automatically waive the application fees if your income qualifies.

It’s also worth checking out the Common App for HBCUs (historically Black colleges and universities), which charges a flat $20 application fee for the 67 colleges within their national association.

  1. Do Your Research

There are many colleges that don’t charge application fees. That’s right — you can apply for free to many community and state colleges. And most colleges have a period of time during the early admissions window where application fees are waived for everyone.

For instance, at least two schools on my senior’s college list offer free application windows. We marked the dates so we’d remember to take advantage of those opportunities for a savings of roughly $100.

Simply by doing our research, our student will save a third of the anticipated cost of applying to college.

  1. Trim Your College List

The best way to budget for college application expenses is to spend on what you need and leave the rest. Narrow down the college list and apply to schools with reasonable acceptance rates.

Michelle McAnaney, college admissions consultant and founder of The College Spy, tells students not to apply to colleges they clearly won’t get accepted to.

“Many times, it is difficult for students to determine if a ‘reach college’ is actually very much within the student’s reach!” she said. “Therefore, I highly recommend students consult with a professional such as their school counselor to determine which reach colleges make sense to apply to.”

  1. Take a Tour or Attend a College Fair

College admissions experts recommend stopping by local schools and taking a tour or checking out a local college fair. You’ll get the inside scoop on how to get a fee waiver and be able to talk to admissions counselors directly about college application costs.

By attending tours and info sessions, you can also get other valuable info to address your family’s specific financial need. For instance, some state universities actively help out-of-state students apply for residency after their first year to reduce their tuition costs.

While applying to college may put up a lot of financial roadblocks for students, it doesn’t have to be that way. Taking advantage of free application windows, budgeting for the more expensive fees and asking for a fee waiver can cut costs and make a stressful senior year a little less cash-strapped.

You might even teach your college-bound student some budgeting skills in the bargain.
