Angelina Jolie Slams Brad Pitt

Angelina Jolie claims she feared for the safety of her children and family during her marriage to Brad Pitt and was attacked by Harvey Weinstein early in her career.  In an interview with The Guardian, Jolie talked about her divorce from Pitt while pushing about her new book “Know Your Rights,” stammering “I … I’m still in my own legal situation,” including allegations of child abuse leveled at Pitt.  She claims she was scared for “my whole family” during the union. “I’m not the kind of person who makes decisions like the decisions I had to make lightly,” she told the paper. “It took a lot for me to be in a position where I felt I had to separate from the father of my children.”  When asked about the last five years, Jolie said the divorce had been “traumatic” and added: “I mean, in some ways it’s been the last decade. There’s a lot I can’t say … I think at the end of the day, even if you and a few people you love are the only people who know the truth of your life, what you fight for, or what you sacrifice, or what you’ve suffered, you come to be at peace with that, regardless of everything going on around you.”  Another issue she had with Pitt during their marriage was his willingness to work with rapist Harvey Weinstein whom, she claims, abused her.  “It was beyond a pass, it was something I had to escape,” said Jolie, who starred in Weinstein’s “Playing by Heart” when she was 21.  “I stayed away and warned people about him. I remember telling Jonny, my first husband, who was great about it, to spread the word to other guys – don’t let girls go alone with him. I was asked to do ‘The Aviator’, but I said no because he was involved. I never associated or worked with him again. It was hard for me when Brad did.”

Willard Scott Dies

Willard Scott, the “Today” show weatherman and famous birthday well-wisher died Saturday. He was 87.  Al Roker, Scott’s “Today” show successor, shared news of Scott’s death on Instagram.  “Willard Scott passed peacefully at the age of 87 surrounded by family, including his daughters Sally and Mary and his lovely wife, Paris,” Roker wrote. “He was truly my second dad and am where I am today because of his generous spirit. Willard was a man of his times, the ultimate broadcaster. There will never be anyone quite like him.”  The cause of death was not released.  Scott joined the “Today” show in 1980 and was a constant presence beamed into millions of American homes for 30 years.  His daily birthday wishes to viewers turning 100 become an endearing segment, with the images of the centenarians projected onto jars of Smucker’s jelly while Scott described them in glowing terms.  His career at NBC actually spanned 65 years, according to the “Today” show website, starting as a page for the network’s NBC affiliate in 1950.

Ex-Jeopardy Producer Ready To Fight

Mike Richards hired an attorney in what appears to be an upcoming legal battle against Sony following his ousting as executive producer of “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune.”  Los Angeles-based attorney Bryan J. Freedman of Freedman + Taitelman, LLP confirmed he’s now representing Richards.  Richards has dominated headlines in the past few weeks due to his short-lived hiring to fill the shoes of the late Alex Trebek as host of the long-running game show. However, his hiring soon became controversial after past derogatory comments he made about women, Asians and Jews from a 2013-14 podcast resurfaced, causing a public uproar.  The backlash caused Richards to step down from his new role as host and instead remain as executive producer of the game show as well as “Wheel of Fortune.”  However, Sony execs confirmed this week that he no longer holds either role.  Richards had signed an overall development deal with Sony in 2019, and became executive producer of “Jeopardy!” and “Wheel of Fortune” in May 2020.

Tom Brady Caught COVID After Drunken Super Bowl Parade

Tom Brady revealed he battled coronavirus in February and predicted the NFL will have a challenging time with players contracting the illness this season.  He confirmed to the Tampa Bay Times in an interview published Saturday he tested positive for the illness shortly after the Super Bowl boat parade. Brady partied hard during the celebration and even alluded to have too much avocado tequila.  When asked about whether he had it, Brady replied: “Yeah.”  “And I think it’s going to be challenging this year. I actually think it’s going to play more of a factor this year than last year, just because of the way what we’re doing now and what the stadium is going to look like and what the travel is going to look like and the people in the building and the fans,” he added.  “It’s not like last year, although we’re getting tested like last year. It’s going to be, I definitely think guys are going to be out at different points and we’ve just got to deal with it.”  Tampa Bay coach Bruce Arians had encouraged his players to get the coronavirus vaccine and revealed earlier in the week the entire team was 100% vaccinated.

Shang-Chi Smashes Box Office

Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings smashed box office expectations over the Labor Day weekend, landing it at the top spot.  The Marvel film took home a massive $71.4 million (and a four-day estimate of $83.5 million), in its theaters-only release, exceeding its first week predictions.  “[It] just absolutely obliterated that,” Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore’s Senior Media Analyst, told EW on Sunday.  In a non-pandemic time, Marvel films tend to open over $100 million in North America, Dergarabedian noted. But, for a film dropping in an ever-changing pandemic marketplace, Shang-Chi’s box office totals are impressive.  “This is a knock it out of the park hit,” Dergarabedian said of the film’s success in its first weekend of release, adding that globally, the film “has done extraordinarily well.”  Worldwide, Shang-Chi took in more than $56 million, for a global total of $127 million. It’s four-day total is predicted to be $139.7M, according to Comscore.

No Major Zoo Escape

Officials in a New Jersey county are reassuring residents that no lions, gorillas or penguins escaped from a local zoo during Tropical Storm Ida, despite rumors to the contrary on social media.  Photos of an official-looking text message appeared on social media this week, claiming animals including penguins, lions, bears, otters, gorillas and reptiles escaped from the Turtle Back Zoo in Essex County when the remnants of Ida swept through the area last week.  Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr. released an official statement Thursday on Facebook saying the message is “unequivocally false.”  The zoo said in a Facebook post that animals were secured indoors before the storm and staff remained on site all night to make sure there were no issues.

Smell Blamed On Lake Erie

Firefighters and utility officials in Ohio said a mysterious, natural gas-like odor reported in several communities Thursday was the result of an inversion from Lake Erie’s waters.  The Willowick Fire Department said it and other departments in lakeside communities received about 60 calls Thursday morning from residents reporting an odor that some callers compared to the smell of natural gas.  Fire departments in Eastlake, Willoughby, Mentor and Mentor-on-the-Lake received similar calls.  Mentor firefighters responded alongside crews from Dominion Energy, and determined that no natural gas leaks had occurred in the affected areas.  Mentor spokesperson Ante Logarusic said investigators determined the odor was likely the result of lake inversion, which results from strong winds causing gunk from the bottom of Lake Erie to be swept to the surface.

Lost Ring Found After Pipe Burst

A burst pipe in the mechanical room of an Alberta, Canada, couple’s home led to the discovery of a ring lost by a previous resident about 25 years earlier.  Rob and Shannon Pape, who moved into their home in the Southeast Hill neighborhood of Medicine Hat about a year ago, said they were giving a tour to visiting family members when they discovered the leaking pipe.  “We got down to the mechanical room, and everything was wet. I had no clue what was going on,” Rob Pape told the Medicine Hat News. “We quickly saw that the last piece of horizontal cast iron pipe in the house had split.”  Pape said he removed the pipe to check.  “I looked in, and I swore I could faintly see a ring. I grabbed my flathead screwdriver and scooped it out,” he said.  The ring was indeed a 10-carat gold peridot ring.  Rob Pape said Joel Chambers, the grandson of the couple who previously purchased their house 70 years earlier, now lives across the street from their home, so they contacted him.  “I sent Joel photos and he sent them to a family group chat,” he said. “They were able to describe the ring perfectly, without even seeing it clean.”  The ring is now safely back in the possession of its owner, a Chambers family member who did not want to be identified.

Man Arrested Over Demons

A West Virginia man was arrested last week after he allegedly chased his parents while wielding an ax and a bow and arrow, telling deputies that he “had to kill them to get the demons out,” according to a local report.  Johnny Carson York Jr. tried to hurt his family members on Friday at their home in Bramwell, a small town near the state’s southern border with Virginia, FOX59 in West Virginia reported.  As deputies with the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department were responding to the call, an emergency dispatcher alerted them that the situation escalated and York was now trying to shoot them with a bow and arrow, according to the station.  Deputies arrived and reportedly learned from a family member that York had been asked to put away some items in a shed before it started to rain. York then allegedly threw a lighter at the family member and chased both.  The parents were able to hide and call 911, which is when they said York tried to shoot them with the bow and arrow.

10 Things That Frustrate Doctors The Most During Appointments

Huffington Post

  1. When patients reveal a problem as the visit is ending.

You typically have three opportunities to state the purpose of your visit: when you make the appointment and the receptionist asks, when the nurse who checks you in asks, and when the doctor comes into the room and asks what concerns you have.

“It never fails, someone will mention they have chest pain as I’m about to walk out the door,” said Alicia Shelly, an internal medicine physician with Wellstar Medical Group in Douglasville, Georgia. “I believe people either get nervous and forget about the symptom or have too many problems they want to discuss and end up waiting until the last minute to mention a major symptom.”

Unfortunately, doctor’s appointments are usually only 15 to 30 minutes in length — and that includes checking you in, the nurse taking your vitals and the actual doctor’s visit.

“It’s important to tell your provider the most important problems right away so they can ask the right questions and order the correct tests within the timeframe allowed,” Shelly said.

  1. When patients are on the phone during their appointment.

A doctor’s time with each patient is already so limited and gets backed up even more by emergencies or administrative tasks. Even one appointment running long because you’re on the phone further adds to the scheduling pileup.

“We need your undivided attention so we can stay on schedule and provide the rest of our patients with the amount of time and attention they deserve,” said Dagny Zhu, an opthamologist and medical director of Hyperspeed LASIK in Rowland Heights, California.

  1. When patients suggest they already know everything about a health topic because they’ve Googled it.

It’s important to be your own advocate — but it’s just as important to keep an open mind during a consult with your doctor.

“I’ve had patients come in who demand LASIK when cataract surgery would be the better option,” Zhu said. “The practice of medicine is very complex — we consider a multitude of tests, clinical findings and other patient-specific factors in order to come up with a final diagnosis and treatment plan.”

Ask questions and challenge your doctor to clear up topics that you’re genuinely confused about, but also trust their expertise. If all it took to diagnose and treat patients were a few Google searches, “I would never have undergone 13 years of post-high school training,” Zhu said.

  1. When patients try to squeeze multiple appointments into one visit.

An annual physical is about how your doctor can help you prevent future illness; follow-up visits are when you should address specific problems.

“Physicals focus on what preventative tests you need at this age and what your cancer risk is,” Shelly said.

Don’t try to get a physical when you’re visiting a doctor for a particular concern. That can throw a wrench in your doctor’s schedule — plus, insurance policies might mean you can’t actually get a physical that day.

“You need to know what type of business you’re here for so I can focus on why you’re here and address your specific concerns,” Shelly said. “If you’re here for a physical and there’s also a problem you have, make a separate follow-up appointment to discuss and look into it.”

  1. When patients don’t prioritize what problems they want to bring up.

If you have too many concerns, your doctor might have difficulty evaluating any or all of them.

“When you have over three problems, it’s harder to focus and sometimes things get missed,” Shelly said. “As a result, your care is less effective.”

Instead, streamline your list of concerns to no more than three things you’d like to discuss. If you’re not sure what to prioritize and what can wait, make a list and show it to your doctor so they can assess what needs to be evaluated right away.

  1. When patients aren’t truthful about their medications or health habits.

You might be holding back out of shame, but that missing information can impact the care you receive.

“When patients aren’t using their glaucoma drops because of redness or burning, for instance, we may think their glaucoma is uncontrolled and recommend surgery, instead of simply switching medications,” Zhu said.

The same goes for sharing information like how much you drink or any other medications or substances you used.

The bottom line? Always be truthful. “There’s no shame,” Zhu said. “Our goal is always to ensure you receive the best treatment possible.”

  1. When patients are late for appointments.

When you’re late, it throws off the schedule. Not only could you end up waiting longer, but your doctor will probably have to rush through your visit, because multiple people might be ready to be seen.

“I’ll have the first patient come right before the 15-minute cutoff, then the second patient comes right on time and the third patient comes 15 minutes early, so now I’ve got three people waiting to be seen at the same time,” Shelly said.

  1. When patients switch from one doctor to the next without reason.

Some people hop from doctor to doctor when they don’t notice any improvement in the condition being treated.

“The problem with this is each doctor is seeing the patient for the first time,” Zhu said. “Much of our ability to diagnose and treat comes from seeing the patient’s course of illness and response to certain medications over time.”

If something isn’t working, a doctor you’ve seen before can try something new and take a step based on whether you’re doing better or worse.

“It’s always best to stick to one doctor for the duration of the treatment, if possible,” Zhu said.

Of course, there’s a big exception to this: If you feel like you’re not getting adequate care or you’re not being heard, you should definitely find someone who makes you feel seen and comfortable.

  1. When patients don’t bring a list of the medications they’re taking.

Not telling your doctor exactly what you’re taking and how much can lead to them prescribing the wrong dose of a medication, and that can lead to adverse reactions.

Come to your appointments as organized and prepared as possible, with an up-to-date list of all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you take and their dosages.

“If you’re a new patient and I don’t know exactly what you’re on and how much you’re taking, I can’t accurately put together a new treatment plan for you,” Kelley said.

  1. When patients don’t communicate outside of appointments.

This is particularly true when it comes to addressing ongoing health problems you may have.

“It’s unfortunate when we don’t have enough time to address every question that a patient may have,” Zhu said. “The rest can be sent over email or continued at a second visit where we’ve allocated more time. We’re always happy to help.”
