Kirstie Alley Died Of Colon Cancer

Kirstie Alley, who was best known for her popular role on “Cheers,” had colon cancer prior to her death at 71 years old. Her representative shared the news with People magazine.  Alley’s death was confirmed on Dec. 5 by her children, True and Lillie Parker, as they revealed their beloved mother had only “recently discovered” the cancer. A statement posted by her children on her official Twitter account read, “We are sad to inform you that our incredible, fierce and loving mother has passed away after a battle with cancer, only recently discovered.”  “She was surrounded by her closest family and fought with great strength, leaving us with a certainty of her never-ending joy of living and whatever adventures lie ahead.”  Alley earned an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe Award for her breakout role as Rebecca Howe in the late ’80s sitcom “Cheers,” which also starred Ted Danson, Shelley Long, Woody Harrelson, and Rhea Perlman.

Celebrities React To Kirstie Alley’s Death

Kirstie Alley’s former Cheers co-star Ted Danson says he learned of her death after watching an old episode of the sitcom on a plane Monday.  “It was the episode where Tom Berenger proposes to Kirstie, who keeps saying no, even though she desperately wants to say yes,” Danson told People.com.  “Kirstie was truly brilliant in it. Her ability to play a woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown was both moving and hysterically funny,” he said. “She made me laugh 30 years ago when she shot that scene, and she made me laugh today just as hard. As I got off the plane, I heard that Kirstie had died. I am so sad and so grateful for all the times she made me laugh. I send my love to her children. As they well know, their mother had a heart of gold. I will miss her.”  “Kirstie was a unique and wonderful person and friend. Her joy of being was boundless,” actress Rhea Perlman, Alley’s co-star on Cheers and Kirstie, said in a statement to Deadline.  Jamie Lee Curtis, who worked with her on Scream Queens, wrote on Instagram: “I’ve just heard the sad news that Kirstie Alley has died. She was a great comic foil in @tvscreamqueens and a beautiful mama bear in her very real life. She helped me buy onesies for my family that year for Christmas. We agreed to disagree about some things but had a mutual respect and connection. Sad news.”  “A sweet soul pass on in Kristie Alley. Sad, sad news. Prayers for all her family,” Tim Allen, he co-star in For Richer Or Poorer, tweeted. Kristin Chenoweth, who appeared with her on the sitcom Kirstie, tweeted: “I love you, Kirstie. I will see you again someday. I can’t believe you’re gone.”

Matthew Perry Avoids Watching Friends

Matthew Perry can’t bring himself to watch “Friends” because it causes him to relive his decades-long struggle with alcohol and drug addiction.  “I can’t watch the show, because I was brutally thin and being beaten down so badly by the disease,” he told CBC Radio’s Tom Power.  Perry, who played Chandler Bing on the beloved series for 10 years, explained that he’s able to pinpoint which substance he was using — whether alcohol, opiates or cocaine — in each episode.  “I could tell season by season by how I looked, and I don’t think anybody else can, but I certainly could,” the “Serving Sara” star said. “That’s why I don’t want to watch it because that’s what I see — that’s what I notice when I watch it.”  Despite his hesitation in the past, Perry said he’s now open to rewatching the iconic series because of the impact it’s had on so many people.  “I think I’m going to start to watch it, because it really has been — first of all, it was an incredible ride — but it’s been an incredible thing to watch it touch the hearts of different generations,” the “Three to Tango” star said, while the audience applauded.

Brendan Fraser’s Brain Almost Shutdown During Filming

Brendan Fraser and Adam Sandler reunited as part of Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series, but it was Fraser’s follow-up role in “George of the Jungle” that really piqued Sandler’s interest. Fraser got muscular to headline the in the 1997 comedy, based on the “Tarzan”-spoofing animated series of the same name.  “The wardrobe was there was no wardrobe,” Fraser said. “George wears a loincloth.”  Sandler said Fraser was so jacked and so good looking in “George of the Jungle” that he “was disappointed,” joking, “You weren’t supposed to do that to us. You did right by the character. But you did wrong by us, man. You made us feel bad about ourselves. Were you oiled up at all during ‘George’?”  “I was waxed. Starved of carbohydrates,” Fraser said. “I would drive home after work and stop to get something to eat. I needed some cash one day, and I went to the ATM, and I couldn’t remember my PIN number because my brain was misfiring. Banging on the thing. I didn’t eat that night.”   Fraser might’ve looked incredible in “George of the Jungle” but getting that muscular body screwed with his memory. The film, which also starred Leslie Mann and Thomas Hayden-Church, was a box office hit with over $170 million at the worldwide box office. “George of the Jungle” remains one of Fraser’s signature roles form the 1990s.

Joe Rogan Suspects The Rock Is On Steroids

Joe Rogan is seeking answers from Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.  He wondered on his popular podcast recently whether the former WWE superstar was “clean” given his incredible physique. Rogan’s question came after social media influencer “Liver King” admitted to steroid use to help his body look the way it does.  “The Rock should come clean right now,” Rogan said. “He should make a video in response to the ‘Liver King’ video. I need to talk to you because The Rock’s been lying. There’s not a f—ing chance in hell he’s clean. Not a chance in hell. As big as The Rock is, at 50? He’s so massive, and he’s so different than he was when he was 30.  “There’s a responsibility you have to people who are listening to you. If you don’t want to talk about it, that’s one thing. But if you do talk about it, there’s a responsibility you have to people listening to you and I think you have to be honest about it, which is why I’m honest about it. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with taking hormone replacement.”  Rogan’s guest, Derek from “More Plates More Dates,” said Johnson strongly implies he is clean.

Snake Hitches A Ride

A couple driving on an Australian highway had a scare when a snake suddenly slithered out from under the hood of their car.  Kerry Jenkins, who posted video of the incident on TikTok, said she was traveling home to Forster, New South Wales, from Darlington Beach, New South Wales, with her partner and her child when the snake came out.  Jenkins can be heard in the video panicking, while her partner reassures her that the animal is a harmless green tree snake.  Jenkins said in a follow-up post that the couple pulled over at their first opportunity and saw the snake slither from the front grille to the undercarriage of the car.  See the video HERE.

Bear Caught Stealing Avocados

A Florida woman captured video of a bear she caught in the act of eating avocados from the tree in her yard.  Lynn Wracan of Davanport said the bear has been seen wandering in the Thousand Oaks area for months, and she recently spotted the bear showing interest in one of her trees in the early morning hours.  Wracan said the bear initially appeared to be interested in her Christmas lights, but she soon realized the animal was stealing avocados from the tree.  “No, he’s eating our avocados,” Wracan is heard saying in the video. “No, that’s not a good idea, pumpkin. Oh, you’re gonna take a nap now? Seriously?”  She said the bear has been blamed for fruit disappearances from multiple trees in the neighborhood. She said authorities told her there is nothing they can do.

Woman Fined For Too Much Snow On The Window

A Washington State Patrol trooper issued a $533 ticket to a driver Sunday after the person drove more than 5 miles with their vehicle and windshield almost completely covered in snow.  Trooper Heather Weatherwax said the State Patrol received a report about the person driving erratically along SR 16 south of Bremerton. When pulled over, the driver reportedly told the trooper that their windshield wipers weren’t working, Weatherwax said.  The driver received the $553 ticket for second-degree negligent driving.  Weatherwax urged people to remove all snow from vehicles before hitting the road.

Should A Toddler Be Allowed In First Class

After an airline passenger allegedly accosted a woman because she had her toddler in the plane’s first-class section, the anonymous mom took to Reddit to ask others if it was wrong of her to book first-class plane tickets for her young child — and people chimed in.    The Reddit user, One-Criticism5777, turned to the “Am I the A******” subreddit on Saturday, Nov. 26. She said a male passenger accused her of sitting in the wrong boarding class on purpose — and that he went on to call her a derogatory term.  The mother said she and her husband had “decided to splurge” on their cross-country flight for Thanksgiving. They booked a first-class ticket for their nearly 3-year-old daughter, who was traveling with them.  “We boarded early since my husband is disabled and when another 1st class passenger saw us he started glaring,” One-Criticism5777 wrote. “Shortly after he sat down, a flight attendant came up and asked to see our boarding passes to make sure we were seated correctly. We showed her our boarding passes and she was like, ‘Cool, y’all are good.’” A second flight attendant reportedly checked the family’s boarding passes before takeoff — and determined they were in their correct seats.  Yet shortly after takeoff, One-Criticism5777 said the man who glared at her family tapped her on the shoulder and claimed that children were not allowed to be seated in first class.

How Sleep Experts Get Through The Day When They’re Sleep-Deprived

HUFFINGTON POST

Don’t stress about it

This is easier said than done, but it’s helpful not to get fixated on the fact that you’re sleep-deprived.

When Fiona Barwick, the director of the sleep and circadian health program at Stanford Health Care, is low on sleep, she reminds herself not to worry about it because she knows her body will do what it takes to get back on track.  Our sleep drive is a self-correcting system that naturally tries to keep the sleep-wake cycle in balance. “If we don’t sleep well one night, we’ll sleep better the next night. If we worry about it, however, our sleep will be worse,” Barwick said.

Expose yourself to light

Barwick also makes a point to expose herself to some bright light first thing in the morning. Our sleep-wake cycle is heavily dependent on light — daylight sends a signal to our brain that it’s time to get up and be active, while darkness sends the cue that it’s almost time to go to bed.

Exposing yourself to light when you first wake up “suppresses melatonin, which increases alertness and boosts mood,” Barwick said. It’ll also help keep your circadian rhythm in check, which should help you sleep more soundly at night.

Have some caffeine (but not too much)

It might seem obvious, but yes: Coffee helps. This is because caffeine blocks adenosine, a chemical in our body that increases the need for sleep. As a result, caffeine makes us feel less sleepy and improves learning and decision-making if you’re sleep-deprived, according to Dr. Andrey Zinchuk, a sleep medicine doctor with Yale Medicine.  But while it may be tempting to keep refilling your mug, it’s important to be mindful of how much caffeine you consume.  “I don’t have too much caffeine, as I want to avoid the crash that occurs when its alerting effects eventually subside,” Barwick said.

Dr. Wissam Chatila, a pulmonologist at Temple Lung Center and professor of thoracic medicine and surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University, advises against having that late-afternoon cup of coffee.

“If taken at the wrong time — e.g. late in evening — then they will interfere with sleep later on,” he said.

Take a catnap

If you’re able to squeeze in a 30- to 60-minute catnap, go for it. A short nap can improve alertness, sleepiness, memory and exercise capacity.  On the flip side, a lengthier midday snooze can actually impair cognitive function, Chatila said, and potentially make it even harder to complete tasks. Make sure to set an alarm so you don’t overdo it.  “I keep the nap relatively short so that I don’t use up too much sleep drive, as I want to save most of it for the coming night,” Barwick said.

If you’re not a napper, even getting some deep rest can be beneficial, Barwick said. Ten to 30 minutes of yoga nidra, a meditative yoga practice that involves deep relaxation, can help you feel refreshed and more attentive.

Go for a walk

When Barwick can’t nap, she tries to go for a walk outside. Even a 10-minute walk can significantly reduce stress, boost your mood and increase alertness, research shows.

Plus, it can build up your sleep drive, which should help you doze off at night.

“That helps to further ensure I will get better sleep the coming night,” Barwick said.

Know that your body is resilient

Lastly, don’t beat yourself up. Our bodies are incredibly resilient, which is why we’re still able to function even when we’re sleep-deprived. (Think about all you’ve been able to accomplish on those days when you didn’t get enough sleep.)  Don’t assume the day will be a wash just because you didn’t get the sleep you needed, Barwick said. Go easy on yourself, and listen to your body.

“I don’t cut back on what I planned to do, but I also don’t beat myself up if I get less done than I wanted,” she said.
