Star Jones To Host Divorce Court

Star Jones is joining the long-running series Divorce Court.  She will replace Faith Jenkins as host and judge on the show in September, People reported Monday.  As the new judge, Jones will preside over divorce proceedings, domestic disputes and other cases on Divorce Court.  “Before I was the legal correspondent for NBC News covering high-profile trials and conducting exclusive jailhouse interviews, I spent six years in a Brooklyn courtroom as a NYC homicide prosecutor and assistant district attorney,” Jones said in a statement.  “Since the beginning of my TV career, it’s been my mission to serve as a voice for the voiceless; and after more than 30 consecutive years on television and in people’s homes, that remains true,” she added.  Jones said she will offer viewers and the parties on Divorce Court “a no-nonsense approach to the law and a decision driven by my proven legal expertise, compassion and empathy, personal experiences and hard-earned common sense.”  Jones confirmed her casting on Twitter, saying she is “incredibly honored” to join the show.

Antonio Brown Hooks Up With Kanye West

Antonio Brown linked up with Kanye West on Monday in Los Angeles, just days after he was released by the Buccaneers on Jan. 6th.  They hung out at celeb hotspot Craig’s restaurant, where they shared laughs and handshakes in social media videos and photos shared by Brown.  “Ye + AB = SB,” he wrote on Twitter and Instagram.  Brown posted the photo after he attended the release party for his new song, “Pit Not The Palace,” at Sapphire strip club in New York.  He shared a video that showed West getting groomed by a barber in a back room at Craig’s. The pair, along with a few others, laughed while Brown filmed the rapper on his phone.  Just days prior, social media influencer Justin LaBoy said that Ye has expressed interest in working on music with Brown.  Before Brown jetted off to LA with Fashion Nova Men, he spent the week in New York City promoting his new song.  The Pro Bowl receiver shared videos dressed in a fur jacket while filming a music video in the Diamond District over the weekend.

ARod Has New Central Park Digs

Alex Rodriguez paid out $9.9 million for a Central Park West co-op — after initially being denied by the building’s board.  Sources say he “made a big fuss about it” and “begged” for the unit until he got it.  “He almost didn’t get accepted and begged the board to accept him,” one insider revealed.  “He had a tantrum and then they said ‘yes.’”  According to a separate source, the board did not want someone with A-Rod’s “reputation.”  “It is a typical white-glove Central Park West co-op,” the source said. “They don’t want anyone with celebrity status living here. That is not what they are going for.” However, he eventually did purchase the three-bedroom, five-and-a-half-bathroom unit from real estate developer Jordan Vogel.  Vogel, 42, had initially purchased the second-floor unit for $6.75 million, records show.  Images show the palatial building towering over Central Park’s western entrance, directly across the street from the Natural History Museum.  “It is the crown jewel of famed architect Emery Roth,” the listing states, “and one of the most prestigious addresses in the entire city.”

Bob Saget Death Update

An updated death investigation report for beloved comedian Bob Saget revealed there was no evidence of drug use or foul play in the Orlando hotel room where he was found.  He was in Florida for his new “I Don’t Do Negative Comedy Tour.” An audience member who attended Saget’s final stand-up show said the beloved comedian was “full of life” in the hours before his death.  “He just seemed so full of life and just really happy to be on stage with the audience,” said Amy West on “Morning in America”. “He was just trying out new material and he would just seem delighted to be telling stories about icons and people that had influenced him. Like Robin Williams and his friendship with John Stamos and his friendship with all the people on ‘Full House.’ He talked about how much he loved his wife, how much he loves his three daughters. You could tell this was a man who had a lot to live for who had a beautiful life who was so happy and really loved what he did.”  The death report details that Saget was expected to check out of the Ritz-Carlton in Orlando Sunday to continue his tour, but his family had been unable to get in touch with him.  Family members contacted the hotel, and security sent a team member to perform a welfare check. When the security team member entered the room, he noted all the lights were off. The room was “orderly” with Saget’s items throughout the room.  According to the report, Saget’s “left arm was across his chest while his right arm was resting on the bed. No signs of trauma were seen.” The team observed that Saget was on his bed and was “cold to the touch, yellow and clammy.” No pulse or breathing was detected.  According to deputies, Saget last used his room key to enter the room at 2:17 a.m. An initial autopsy found no evidence of drug use or foul play. The cause and manner of death are pending further studies and investigation, which may take up to 10-12 weeks to complete.

Wild and crazy comic Steve Martin earned a “Jeopardy!” invite for chiming in about his dapper quiz show doppelganger!  Smarty-pants Sam Buttery-an associate professor at the Naval postgraduate School-recently became the first “Jeopardy!” Professors Tournament champion and scored a $100,000 grand prize. But on social media, viewers crowed more about his uncanny resemblance to Martin!  The good-natured funnyman, 76, jokingly reacted to the hubbub by tweeting: “So great to split the prize money with Sam!”  And in response to his cheeky comment, the show’s official Twitter account gushed, “We would love to have you on ‘Jeopardy!’ anytime, in any capacity.”

Mysterious Creature Turns Out To Be A Toy

Officials at a Welsh zoo said a “mysterious creature” spotted swimming in the banded mongoose enclosure was retrieved by keepers and identified as a toy crocodile.  The Folly Farm Adventure Park & Zoo in Kilgetty, Wales, said in a Facebook post that a weekend visitor to the facility alerted staff to a “mysterious creature” in the banded mongoose exhibit.  “Was it a miniature Loch Ness Monster?” the Facebook post said. “A mysterious water lizard?”  Zookeepers were sent to capture the unidentified enclosure invader and “breathed a little sigh of relief” when they identified the animal as a toy crocodile that apparently had been dropped by a zoo visitor.  “It did give us all a laugh this gray Monday morning,” the post said.

Ostrich Stampede

Drivers in a Chinese city captured video when they came upon an unusual traffic hazard — a flock of more than 80 ostriches racing through the streets late at night.  Videos captured early Saturday morning in Chongzuo City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, show dozens of the large, flightless birds running through urban roads.  Local police said the ostriches escaped from a local farm through a gate that had been left unlocked. Police said most of the ostriches were rounded up and returned to the farm.  No injuries were reported from the ostriches’ time on the loose.  See the video HERE.

Bachelor Takes Out Billboard To Find Love

A British bachelor is taking an unorthodox approach to his search for the right mate: putting up billboards with his photo.  Muhammad Malik, 29, had multiple billboards put up in the Birmingham, England, area bearing the phrase, “Save me from an arranged marriage.”  The billboards direct interested women to his website, findmalikawife.com.  Malik wrote on the website that a friend suggested he try advertising after he struck out on dating apps.  “I just haven’t found the right girl yet. It’s tough out there. I had to get a billboard to get seen,” he wrote.  Malik said his ideal mate would be a woman in her 20s who shares his Muslim faith.  “I’m open to any ethnicity, but I’ve got a loud Punjabi family — so you’d need to keep with the bants,” he wrote. The bachelor said that despite the slogan on his billboard, he isn’t against arranged marriages.  “I think arranged marriages have a place and tradition in many Islamic cultures. In fact, there are many studies that show that arranged marriages have many advantages,” he wrote. “I just want to try and find someone on my own first.”  Malik told the BBC his billboards, which are scheduled to remain up through Jan. 14, have resulted in a flood of responses.  See the video HERE.

Man Climbs Electrical Tower… Causes Power Outage

A North Carolina man who climbed nearly 90 feet up an energized electrical tower on Sunday caused power outages in the area during his rescue, authorities said.  Officers responded to the 1300 block of Nations Crossing Road in Charlotte after receiving reports of a man who scaled a large high-tension electrical tower and began a four-hour long effort to get the man down, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said in a news release.  “That tower was energized with six lines, each carrying about 115,000 volts,” Major Brian Foley told FOX46 Charlotte. “I don’t know what your faith is, but I think God was watching over him today.”  In order to rescue the man safely, police said they contacted Duke Energy to redirect the high-voltage power from the tower, creating limited power outages for businesses and residents in the area.  While Duke Energy was able to re-route power through other stations to return, the station reported that there were still widespread outages during the interim.  “This is about saving someone’s life,” Foley told the station. “I know some people were upset about their power being cut off, but truly his is about trying to protect an individual and keep them from dying.”  While officers were trying to talk the man down, police said bystanders complicated the effort.

6 Sneaky Habits That Are Hurting Your Friendships

HUFFINGTON POST

  1. You give unsolicited advice when your friend just wants to vent.

When a friend is dealing with an issue — say a disagreement with their partner or feeling unappreciated work — sometimes they’re looking for solutions and other times they just want a supportive listening ear. Though you mean well, giving advice when they’re looking to vent can backfire and lead to more frustration.

“If your friend asks for advice, that’s one thing. But if you always volunteer it, especially if you make your friend feel like you know what the right thing is for your friend to do, you may find your friend sharing less and less with you,” sociologist and friendship expert Jan Yager — author of ”Friendgevity: Making and Keeping the Friends Who Enhance and Even Extend Your Life” — told HuffPost. “This can undermine your friend not just because your friend may feel like you think you ‘know it all’ when there are circumstances or issues that you do not understand completely, but it also takes away from your friend the responsibility of solving their issues on their own.”

Before you tell them how to fix their problems, ask them point blank: Do you want my opinion here? (Or, phrased another way, “Do you want comfort or solutions?”)

“You may be surprised that your friend replies, ‘Sure, thanks for offering,’ or ‘No, I just wanted to share about what’s going on,’” Yager said.

  1. You don’t ask questions about their life.

Your friend checks in with you every so often to see how your new job is going, if your anxiety has been OK lately and what’s going on with your family. You fill them in but rarely leave enough time in the conversation to ask about how they’ve been.

“One of the biggest complaints people have about friendships is feeling like a friend is not interested in them. Specifically, a friend who does not ask them questions about themselves and their experiences can be a dealbreaker,” said Anna Poss, a therapist based in Chicago. “It leaves people feeling insecure and ignored.”

To remedy this, start making a conscious commitment to check in with your friend and steer the conversation back to them when you do talk. If you struggle in this area, Poss recommends setting a goal of asking a certain number of questions before talking about yourself again until the habit becomes ingrained.

  1. You avoid confrontation at all costs.

Even the smoothest friendships hit a bump in the road occasionally. At some point, your friend is going to say something that hurts your feelings or do something to piss you off. When it happens, do you tell this person what bothered you? Or do you complain about it to your other friends instead?

“Too often if a friend has wronged us, we avoid talking to them,” said Adam Smiley Poswolsky, workplace belonging expert and author of “Friendship in the Age of Loneliness.” “Instead, we go and vent to our other friends about what’s going on. This might feel good in the short term, but it avoids the issue at hand.”

Confrontation may feel tense or uncomfortable in the moment but it doesn’t have to turn into a screaming match. These honest discussions are vital to the long-term health and closeness of the relationship. Plus, stifling your emotions only works for so long — those icky feelings are bound to seep out one way or another.

“Sure, take the time you need before approaching [your friend],” Poswolsky said. “But when you’re ready, reach out and have the conversation. True friendship means repairing what isn’t working.”

  1. You impose the expectations you have for yourself on to your friend.

You may have a lot in common with your friends but that doesn’t mean you’re always going to see eye-to-eye. You have different preferences, priorities and points of view and that’s perfectly healthy. Resist the temptation to tell your friend how to live their life based on what you would do.

“Your friends may want to live their lives differently than you do,” said psychologist and friendship expert Marisa G. Franco. “As a friend, you should guide them to live out their values and not yours. So, even if you think it’s a wild decision for them to quit their job and move to Italy, support them because it’s what they want.”

However, if you fear your friend is making a decision that could be legitimately harmful, it’s OK to voice your concerns.

“If you offer feedback, make sure you can answer affirmatively when you ask yourself: Is my feedback based on what’s best for my friend, rather than what I want for them?” Franco added.

  1. You get competitive when things are going well for them.

Life sure has been treating your friend well as of late: They got a promotion at work, paid off a big chunk of their student loans and went on an Insta-worthy tropical vacation to boot. You want to be happy for their success, but inside you’re seething with envy — and it’s starting to show. When your pal mentions their new role or talks about the trip, you can’t help but pipe in with some brag about how you’re on track to get a huge raise, too, or gush about the luxe accommodations on the last vacation you took.

“It’s OK to consider what your friends are doing or accomplishing because that is human nature,” Yager said. “But you want to avoid being so competitive that you get labeled a ‘one-up’ kind of person. Friends should be cheering each other on and proud of each other’s accomplishments rather than jealous and envious.”

“Some envy is normal; it even shows you what you value and might want for yourself,” Yager continued. “But you want to avoid begrudging your friend their achievements.”

You can’t just get rid of your competitive streak in an instant, but you can lessen its intensity with practice. First, acknowledge and validate your own feelings; remember that envy is something all humans deal with from time to time. Do some gratitude exercises to help you zero in on the stuff you appreciate about your own life. Then use envy as a motivator to improve the parts of your own life you’re dissatisfied with.

“Channeled this way, envy is actually kind of adaptive; it’s a compass that can keep us on track, as long as we are willing to listen,” psychologist Miriam Kirmayer wrote in a blog post for Psychology Today.

  1. You’re always waiting for your turn to speak instead of really listening.

Are you thinking about what you want to add to the conversation when you should be listening to what your friend is actually saying? Then you may need to sharpen your active listening skills.

“It’s normal to be excited to share something with your friend, but as a habit, it can cause strain in a relationship,” Poss said. “Your friend may feel resentful that you are not returning the close attention they give you.”

If they don’t feel heard, it may make them less likely to open up to you in the future. To improve your active listening skills, stay present (rather than formulating your response in your head), withhold interruptions, summarize what’s been said and show interest by asking follow-up questions.

Body language is also a key part of active listening. Turn toward your friend as they’re speaking, make eye contact and nod occasionally.

“You are signaling to your friend that you are in tune with them and paying attention,” Poss said. “Paying attention to your friends body language will also clue you in to how they are feeling and help you stay focused.”
