Wally Cleaver Dies

Tony Dow, known for his role as Wally Cleaver on “Leave it to Beaver,” has died at the age of 77.  Dow died Tuesday morning, according to the actor’s management team.  “It is with an extremely heavy heart that we share with you the passing of our beloved Tony this morning,” Frank Bilotta and Renee James announced on Facebook.  “Tony was a beautiful soul – kind, compassionate, funny and humble. It was truly a joy to just be around him. His gentle voice and unpretentious manner was immediately comforting and you could not help but love him. The world has lost an amazing human being, but we are all richer for the memories that he has left us. From the warm reminiscences of Wally Cleaver to those of us fortunate enough to know him personally – thank you Tony. And thank you for the reflections of a simpler time, the laughter, the friendship and for the feeling that you were a big brother to us all. We will miss you.”  In May, Dow’s wife, Lauren Shulkind, announced his cancer had returned — just a month after he celebrated his 77th birthday.

Jeopardy Hosts Won’t Change

Current “Jeopardy!” hosts Mayim Bialik and Ken Jennings will reportedly keep their jobs as the permanent hosts of the beloved game show, according to multiple media reports. Bialik will stay on to host primetime editions of the show, as well as the upcoming “Celebrity Jeopardy!” expected to come to ABC, according to Variety. Jennings, meanwhile, will also stay on so that Bialik can continue to film her Fox sitcom “Call Me Kat,” according to the Daily Mail.  Sony is expected to make the official announcement soon.  The rumor comes weeks after executive producer Michael Davies told Variety that they would need “multiple hosts” for the “Jeopardy!” franchise as they launch “more versions” of the show.  Longtime host Alex Trebek died of pancreatic cancer on Nov. 8, 2020. He hosted the show for 37 seasons.

Adele and Springsteen Pricey Tickets

Concert tickets for Adele and Bruce Springsteen are reaching record-high prices, as fans were shocked to see the cost surge.  Adele, who revealed she has rescheduled her Las Vegas residency and canceled tour dates Monday, has concert tickets being sold for between $600 to more than $40,000 on StubHub.  On Monday evening, two tickets for her were priced at $41,280 each. Other ticket tiers were being sold for $20,000 each or more.   Ticket prices for the “Weekends with Adele” tour, which will run from Nov. 18, 2022 until March 25, 2023, start from more than $1,100 Tuesday. Tickets are not currently available at Ticketmaster.   Meanwhile, fans got another sticker shock last week when attempting to purchase concert tickets to see rock musician Bruce Springsteen.   Seats skyrocketed to $4,000 due to Ticketmaster’s “dynamic pricing program,” which raises prices based on demand.   Fans were stunned with Springsteen’s upcoming tour costs, as Ticketmaster addresses pricing backlash Sunday to release statistics about costs. Ticketmaster stood by its “dynamic pricing program” and said only 1.3% of total tickets across “The Boss” tour sold for more than $1,000, according to Variety.

Tom Hardy Is Hard To Understand

Half of Americans now watch TV with closed captioning or subtitles on because of muddled audio or hard-to-understand accents according to a recent survey by Preply, with Tom Hardy ranked as the hardest to follow.  British accents in general pose a problem for U.S. viewers, with shows like “Peaky Blinders” and “Game of Thrones” topping the list of series that are watched with subtitles.  Hardy is often delivering his lines from behind a mask, particularly in Christopher Nolan films “The Dark Knight Rises” and “Dunkirk,” but his manner of speaking has inspired articles like Vulture’s 2018 piece “Tom Hardy Needs to Learn How to Enunciate” and Dallas Observer’s 2020 list “Tom Hardy Movies Ranked by How Hard It Is to Understand What He’s Saying.”  The percentage of viewers using subtitles was much higher in younger demos (72% for Gen Z) than for Gen X or Boomers, which means it’s not just those who are hard of hearing using subtiles.  Other celebrities on the list include fellow Brits Sean Connery, Michael Caine, Benedict Cumberbatch, Idris Elba and James McAvoy, as well as non-native English speakers Sofia Vergara, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jackie Chan. The only two U.S. actors mentioned were Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt, likely for their respective roles as Jack Sparrow and incomprehensible Irish boxer Mickey O’Neil in “Snatch.”  The study found that 57% of Americans have used subtitles to better understand actors with an accent, with Scottish accents like those used in “Outlander” the hardest to comprehend, followed by Irish accents such as those on “Derry Girls,” and British accents of all backgrounds such as on “Downton Abbey,” “Bridgerton,” “Skins,” and “Doctor Who.”
**********It took us awhile to realize Robert Pattinson is saying “I’m Batman!!” We thought he said “I’m a black man!!!”
*****One other factor: actors who whisper their lines!! We’re thinking about YOU, Kiefer Sutherland!!
TOPIC: Do you keep the subtitles on ALL the time??

STUPID NEWS

Sewer Maintenance Causes Toilets To Back Up

Residents of an Iowa city said maintenance being performed on the municipality’s sanitary sewers is having an unusual side-effect — causing their toilets to overflow.  Locals in Johnston said their toilets have been overflowing in recent days as a result of the work being performed on the city’s sewers.  “If I didn’t have the toilet seat down it probably would have shot out,” Amy Darling-Harding told KCCI-TV. “It was that much pressure and it was a humming noise.”  The city said on its website that residents should keep toilet lids closed while not in use.  “Have you experienced water splashing out of your toilets recently? The splashing water is caused by the water cleaning system used during sanitary sewer maintenance. The water cleaning system creates increased air pressure within the sewer piping, causing water to sputter out of toilets,” the city said.

Whale Lands On Top Of Fishing Boat

A whale breached in the middle of a group of fishing boats off the Massachusetts coast and was caught on camera landing on one of the vessels.  Video from the 10 a.m. Sunday incident off the coast of Plymouth shows the humpback whale breaching near multiple fishing boats and landing on one of the boats, causing its bow to dip below the water.  The operator of the boat said there were two people on board at the time of the whale encounter, but no one was injured. The boat sustained minor damage but was able to return to the boat ramp on its own power.  “The boat was in the right place at the wrong time. This could have been much worse for all involved,” Plymouth Harbormaster Chad Hunter told NBC Boston. “Children like to lean over the side of the boat to watch the fish so it is very lucky that nobody got hurt here. An incident like this is pretty rare but very dangerous to boaters.”  See the video HERE.

Chess Robot Breaks Opponent’s Finger

A chess-playing robot grabbed the finger of its 7-year-old opponent and broke it during last week’s Moscow Chess Open tournament, Russian media reported Monday.  “The robot broke the child’s finger,” Sergei Lazarev, President of the Moscow Chess Federation, told the Russian TASS agency. “Of course, this is bad.”  A video shared on social media shows the robot taking one of the boy’s pieces, and then grabbing his finger as he attempts to make a move.  Four adults then rush in, struggling to free the boy before leading him away from the chessboard.  Lazarev said the chess federation had rented the robot that appeared in many previous events without incident.

Taco Bell Sued Over Boiling Water

A Dallas Taco Bell is being sued by two customer who state an employee burned them with hot water.  Attorneys Ben Crump and Paul Grinke filed the lawsuit July 13 after the incident occurred on June 17 and seek $1,000,000 in damages.  The lawsuit alleges “Brittany Davis and C.T. (a minor), who both suffered severe burns and trauma when a Dallas (TX) Taco Bell manager poured boiling water on them as they tried to resolve an issue with their order.”  The victims entered the fast food place after their drive-thru order of $30 was made incorrectly twice where the employees allegedly became combative and the general manager came out with boiling hot water and threw it at the victims.  The women were able to escape before the manager was able to get a second bucket to throw at them.  According to the lawsuit, both suffered large and deep burns while Davis suffered through 10 seizures whole on the way to the hospital and airlifted to Parkland’s ICU unit.  See the video HERE.

5 Unspoken Job Interview Rules About What You Should Wear

HUFFINGTON POST

Rule #1: When in doubt about dress codes, look at social media photos or directly ask recruiters.

Researching what staff members look like in photos during company hours can give you a sense of how you should dress for the interview.

“I work for a technology company and we are business-casual. I tell candidates to wear business casual and something they are comfortable in,” Woody said.

“If they are really stuck, then I advise them to check out our corporate careers page and social media where our employees are shown. This activity gives candidates a better idea of what is acceptable to wear. Clothing recommendations definitely vary by industry and company because some could be more formal and require a suit.”

Rule #2: Don’t wear pajamas or sweatpants to a video interview, even if you think the interviewer can only see your upper half.

Even if the interview is happening on a computer screen, try to dress as if the interview is happening physically in front of you. Match the upper half of your wardrobe to the bottom half –– you never know what a hiring manager might see.

“If your interview is over video, you should still be thoughtful about your pants or skirt even if they are not going to be visible on camera,” advised Sarah Johnston, co-founder of Job Search Journey. “I heard a horror story from a client where they got interrupted during a video interview and had to stand up. They had on a nice top, but pajama pants on the bottom. This really threw them off, and they were unable to recover.”

Ashley Watkins, a job search coach with corporate recruiting experience, said that she has seen some job-seekers shift to a more relaxed wardrobe as a result of the pandemic, but “this doesn’t give you pass to wear PJs or skip pants altogether because it’s a video interview,” she said.

“Be prepared for mishaps. If an emergency happens during your interview and you have to immediately run away, you don’t want your interview panel to catch a glimpse of your undies.”

Rule #3: Your clothes can signal how seriously you are taking the interview.

If you dress too casually, you are going to invite assumptions that you are not super excited about the opportunity, even if you really do care about it.

“Anything too revealing or casual –– T-shirts, crop tops, etcetera –– could set the wrong tone and may come off as the candidate not being too serious about the opportunity,” said Jackie Cuevas, a nonprofit human resource administrator.

Anyelis Cordero, founder of Propel on Purpose Coaching, a career coaching service designed for first-generation professionals, finds that regardless of what industry you are vying for, you should dress to impress since humans can make snap judgments in the blink of an eye.

“How you physically show up matters and will be either consciously or subconsciously considered when they’re evaluating you as a candidate,” she said.

Rule #4: It’s better to be safe than sorry and err on the side of on dressing more professionally.

Carmen Rosas, an estate planning attorney, said that she has noticed that the pandemic has definitely relaxed workplace dress codes, but she still believes it’s best to choose interview attire that is true to your personality while being safe for work — no cleavage-baring tops, short skirts, wrinkled shirts or pants that are too tight. “While you’re interviewing, it’s better to be safe than sorry,” she said.

“As a business owner who does all the hiring for my team, I’m always keeping in mind that my employees are my brand, and while I want individuals to be true to themselves, they are also representing my firm and my brand,” Rosas said. “Our wealthy clients don’t want their attorney’s team showing up in sweatpants, and they also don’t expect it. As you’re preparing for interviews, keep that in mind. ‘How can you dress according to the brand of the organization or business you’re interviewing with?’”

Of course, buying new professional clothes can get expensive if you want to dress to impress. Jails To Jobs maintains a directory of organizations in different states that give away professional outfits to those who qualify, such as 100 Suits for 100 Men and Dress For Success.

Rule #5: If the dress code really bothers you, that’s a sign that this job may not be right for you.

It’s important to remember that a job interview is a two-way street: A hiring manager gets to see if you are the right fit for their team, but you get to see if they are right for you, too. If your future team’s ideal uniform feels oppressive and constricting, that’s something to consider before accepting an offer.

“If you find that you have to ‘dress a part’ that doesn’t suit you, that likely isn’t the right company culture for you,” Cordero said. “My life partner used to work in banking and had to wear what he calls a ‘monkey suit’: [a] suit and tie. He hated that part of the job. He’s more of a jeans, T-shirt and blazer, sneakers type of guy. When he transitioned into the tech start-up world, he felt more comfortable and was able to show up authentically himself in all ways.”
