New Father Of The Bride Breaks Records

Father’s Day weekend was the ideal launch pad for Warner Bros’ Andy Garcia-Gloria Estefan romantic comedy Father of the Bride, which wound up being the biggest HBO Max movie premiere ever in its four days, specifically for a title that was exclusively made for the streaming service.  Father of the Bride was the No. 1 title across HBO Max around the world in its first four days since it launched on Thursday, June 16. The film also ranked among the top 10 most-watched title launches on HBO Max to date in Mexico, based on its first four days.  The fresh angle in this Latino take on Father of the Bride: The bride’s parents, played by Garcia and Estefan, are on the verge of a divorce.  Mexico ranks as the second-strongest country for Father of the Bride viewing on HBO Max to date, behind only the U.S.

Kim Kardashian Waited To Introduce Kids To Pete Davidson

Kim Kardashian consulted multiple therapists and big sister Kourtney Kardashian before introducing Pete Davidson to her four children.  Kim, who shares North, 9, Saint, 6, Chicago, 4, and Psalm, 3, with ex Kanye West – revealed on Tuesday that she dated Pete for six months before bringing him around the little ones.  “Luckily I have a sister that’s been through it all and we talked about it,” Kim said during a “Today” show appearance, referencing the three kids Kourtney shares with ex Scott Disick.  “I consulted with a few therapists and friends that have been through it. I definitely wanted to wait six months. That was the marker.”  She noted that “different things work for different people,” explaining, “You just have to do what’s right and try to be as respectful and cautious as possible.”  “I waited a good 10 months before I was ready to open myself up. I think you definitely need that time to yourself,” she said of dating again after filing for divorce from West in February 2021.  “But once you’re ready to get out there I felt like I just wanted new energy and something different. [The relationship] definitely took me by surprise.”  The interview came just days after Kim reunited with West to support North at a basketball game near Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Elon Musk’s Kid Changes Name and Gender Identity

Elon Musk’s 18-year-old child reportedly filed to change their name months ago in an ongoing effort to cut ties with him.  The teenager, who was given the name Xavier Musk at birth, legally requested their moniker be changed to Vivian Jenna Wilson, according to TMZ. The name Wilson is the maiden name of the teen’s mom, Justine Musk.  The documents were reportedly filed in April, shortly after their 18th birthday. An alleged screenshot has been circulating via Twitter.  The paperwork lists their reason for the name change as “gender identity and the fact that I no longer live with or wish to be related to my biological father in any way, shape or form.”  The hearing will take place on Friday, TMZ reports.  Elon, who has yet to comment on the filing, shares his child and her twin brother, Griffin, with ex-wife Justine.  The former couple are also the parents of triplets Kai, Saxon and Damian, 16.  He additionally has two children with ex-girlfriend Grimes — son X AE A-XII, 2, and daughter Exa Dark Sideræl, 6 months. Elon has remained relatively private about his kids’ lives over the years and has never publicly described his relationship with his eldest child.

Giant Stingray

A 661-pound giant stingray caught in a Cambodian river is believed to be the largest freshwater fish ever encountered by researchers.  Scientists with the Wonders of Mekong research project said they were installing underwater receivers to track migratory fish in the Mekong River in northern Cambodia and had asked local fishermen to get into contact if they made any significant catches.  The group was contacted by a 42-year-old fisherman who landed a 661-pound giant stingray in the Stung Treng area.  The scientists paid the fisherman for his catch and released the stingray after they weighed, measured and tagged the fish.  Wonders of Mekong researcher Zeb Hogan, a fish biologist at the University of Nevada and host of National Geographic’s Monster Fish TV series, said the massive fish could help researchers learn more about giant stingrays. See the video HERE.

Bears Battle In Carport

A California woman’s home security camera captured footage of two bears that chose her carport for the scene of their showdown.  Lisa Quick of South Lake Tahoe said she awoke to the sound of growling outside her home and her Ring security camera captured video of the cause: two bears fighting in her carport.  The footage shows the bears charging at each other from opposite sides of the carport.  Quick said she shouted and her dogs barked at the bears, scaring the wild animals away.  She said bears often visit her property and will usually flee when she chases them away.

Florida Man Attracts Cops During Kidnapping

A Florida dog breeder who was kidnapped purposefully got police to pull over a car so he could get some help.  22-year-old Tsdekiel Sellers of Atlanta, 25-year-old Benyahveen Radcliffe of Buffalo, and 22-year-old Kashaveeyah Bragdon of Tallahassee, were arrested on multiple charges, including kidnapping, carjacking, armed burglary and home invasion after posing as interested dog buyers.  The three men are accused of robbing the victim and demanded he hand over cash.  After nearly two days, they forced the man to drive to another location.  On the way, he spotted a deputy and purposely broke the rules of the road.  He was pulled over and gave a hand signal to the deputy in hopes he’d notice he was in danger.  The deputy got the hint and the other men were arrested.

Bees Invade Home

About 6,000 bees were recently removed from inside the walls of an Omaha couple’s 100-year-old home.  Thomas and Marylu Gouttierre told the Omaha World-Herald they have been planting bee-friendly flowers outside their midtown home, but they never expected the bees to move in.  The bees likely infiltrated through a hole in the mortar of its brick exterior. The Gouttierres discovered them after noticing many bees flying outside their kitchen window and found about 30 in a second-floor bedroom.  “If you put your ears to the wall you could hear the buzzing,” said Thomas Gouttierre, who is a retired dean at the University of Nebraska at Omaha who used to lead the Center for Afghanistan Studies there.  Gouttierre said their first thought was to call an exterminator, “but we’ve been reading and there are a lot of great shows on PBS ‘Nature’ about how important bees are to pollinating the world in which we live.”  The couple contacted two members of the Omaha Bee Club who charged $600 to safely relocate the bees. Gilligan said he has removed bees from a number of homes, apartments, barns and trees in the past seven years. The last home he did before the Gouttierres’ had 15,000 bees.

10 Common Behaviors That Are Making You More Forgetful

HUFFINGTON POST

Not getting enough sleep

Sleep has many health benefits, including improving memory. Not sleeping enough can affect your ability to learn new things by up to 40%, and it can affect the hippocampus part of your brain, which is responsible for making new memories.  “Sleep allows our brains to restore,” Goldman said. “Certain stages of sleep, including REM sleep, are specifically associated with memory consolidation or the process of newly learned information being transformed into long-term memory.”

The Sleep Foundation recommends adults get about seven to nine hours of quality sleep a night. Not getting enough sleep or having poor quality sleep can make us more forgetful because “the new information we learn is not being stored in our long-term memory and is more likely to be forgotten or lost,” Goldman said.  Julia Kogan, a health psychologist in Florida and creator of the Master Stress Method, said sleep is related to attention and focus — two things that are critical when it comes to memory.

“If we are skipping on sleep, we are less likely to be attentive, focused and energetic,” she said. “If we are lacking attention, then we are unlikely to be able to retain information well. Therefore, those who regularly skip sleep are more likely to be forgetful since the attention parts of their brain, especially in the prefrontal cortex, are not going to be as sharp.”

Multitasking

Kogan said forgetfulness is often “an attention problem.” She explained that being attentive and focused is an important part of remembering information.  “If we did not fully pay attention, are distracted, or we are not in a mental state to retain information, then we are not going to fully attend to the information, resulting in what looks like forgetfulness,” Kogan added.

Distraction can also happen when you multitask. “Working on various tasks at the same time can actually lead to less productivity and more forgetfulness,” Kogan said.

She recommends focusing on one thing at a time. One way to do this is by time-blocking at work by splitting tasks into manageable activities with small breaks.

“This might look like 45 minutes of a specific task with no interruptions or other tasks, followed by a 5-to-10-minute break,” Kogan said.

Not exercising or moving your body

“Exercise is important for your overall health, including your memory,” said Valentina Dragomir, a psychotherapist and founder of PsihoSensus Therapy and PsihoSensus Academy. “Exercise increases blood flow to the brain and helps to protect brain cells. Also, there is [research] that shows sedentary habits are linked to thinning in some brain regions that are important for memory.”

“Regular exercise ― not necessarily strenuous exercise ― helps reduce the risk of a number of common illnesses that are linked to memory loss, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes to name a few,” Goldman added.

Taking certain medications

Have you recently started taking a new medication? This could be affecting your memory, too.

“Medicines like antidepressants, allergy medications, blood pressure stabilizers, and more can affect memory due to their sedative properties,” said Sanam Hafeez, a neuropsychologist, teaching faculty member at Columbia University, and founder and director of Comprehensive Consultation Psychological Services, P.C.

Other medications that can make you more forgetful include benzodiazepines, cholesterol-lowering drugs, antiepileptic agents, narcotic painkillers, antihypertensive drugs, incontinence medications, antihistamines and more.

“Some medications only impair your memory when you are taking them, and others can have more long-lasting effects,” she noted. Talking to your doctor and finding the best medication for you and your lifestyle will help.

Drinking alcohol

“Alcohol can damage brain cells and lead to memory problems,” Dragomir said. “According to research, long-term drinking causes the brain to decrease in size.”

Kogan said those with an alcohol use disorder or those who binge drink are more likely to experience short- and long-term memory loss.

“When drinking, alcohol impacts the hippocampus, which is largely responsible for learning and memory,” Kogan explained. “Alcohol can impact how the nerves in the hippocampus communicate, leading to forgetfulness.”

She added, “People who drink heavily tend to be deficient in certain vitamins and other nutrients, which can also lead to forgetfulness.”

Smoking

Smoking is another habit to kick if you want to improve your memory. “Smoking damages brain cells and stops new ones forming in the hippocampus, which leads to forgetfulness,” Dragomir said.

She also cited a study in the Journal of Neuroscience that shows “chronic exposure to nicotine might impair brain mechanisms related to learning and memory.”

“Smoking can impair lung and heart function, which slows oxygen transport to the brain,” Hafeez added. “Less oxygen in your brain can lead to less brain function, causing memory loss.”

The THC in marijuana may also impact learning and memory.

“Marijuana has been shown to produce short-term issues with working memory specifically, as well as attention,” Kogan said. The problem is worse the more you smoke. “In heavy users, it has been shown that marijuana can cause issues with learning and memory for weeks after cannabis consumption.”

Not eating certain foods

Food can impact our brain as well. “What we ingest impacts how we feel physically, mentally and emotionally,” Goldman said. “A diet that is lacking balance can impact the body in a negative way.”

If you are looking for foods to boost brain function, Harvard Medical School suggests opting for leafy vegetables, fatty fish, berries, tea and coffee, and walnuts. Hafeez recommends also “consuming a diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods.” These include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and healthy fats, among others.

Being disorganized

Organization is important when it comes to memory.

“We are much more likely to forget things when our external environment is in disarray,” Goldman said. “A chaotic, cluttered, or disorganized environment works for some, but not for most individuals.”

She recommends finding a system that works for you. “Keep a notebook, create a schedule, get a calendar — whatever the system, be consistent and follow through.”

Part of being organized is finding a placed for everything, including those often-misplaced keys. “Set specific places for items to decrease the chance you will lose them; for example, the keys go on a hook by the door, they are not placed down absentmindedly when we walk in and drop our belongings,” Goldman added.

Having an untreated mental health issue

“Both anxiety and depression can impair concentration, making it more difficult to attend to small details,” Goldman said. “It can be challenging to remain organized; we might be easily overwhelmed and lack focus.”

Trauma survivors in particular “tend to have impaired memory,” according to Goldman. “The nervous system is in overdrive trying to ensure safety and protection, which means non-life-threatening details are more likely to be forgotten.”

“Because stress, anxiety, and depression can impact attention, learning, and memory, it is very important to address these concerns in order to sharpen our memory,” Kogan added. “Those struggling with anxiety and depression should seek evidence-based treatments, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or acceptance and commitment therapy.”

Not sharpening your mind

One of the best things you can do to combat forgetfulness is to stimulate your brain. “Keeping your brain active by learning new things, playing games, reading, or other stimulating activities is a way to keep the ‘muscles’ of your brain in shape,” Goldman said.

The American Psychological Association recommends taking “mental snapshots” of things in life, like where you parked, to pull up in your brain when you forget. It also suggests training your brain through mnemonic devices and vanishing cues or using technology to help you remember things.

“Think of your brain and memory as something that must be used and exercised like any other part of the body or it will atrophy,” Hafeez said.

When to see a doctor for memory issues

Call your health care provider if your forgetfulness doesn’t improve after these changes or if you have these symptoms:

  • Asking the same questions over and over again.
  • Getting lost in places you know well.
  • Having trouble following recipes or directions.
  • Becoming confused about time, people and places.
  • Not taking care of oneself, eating poorly, not bathing or behaving unsafely.

Being forgetful can be annoying, but it doesn’t have to define your life. With a few lifestyle changes and some mental exercises, you can improve your memory in no time.
