Al Michaels Moving To Amazon

Al Michaels is in agreement with Amazon Prime Video to lead its booth when it begins its exclusive coverage of “Thursday Night Football” in the fall.  Michaels’ partner will be ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit. An official announcement could come as early as this week.  He is expected to sign the contract shortly, after several months of negotiations. Michaels, whose contract is for three years, will be paid near the Joe Buck neighborhood, according to sources.  Buck signed a five-year, $75 million deal with ESPN to join his longtime partner at Fox, Troy Aikman, on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football.”  Herbstreit, who has two years remaining on his ESPN deal, will also continue on “College GameDay” and Saturday college games. The terms of Herbstreit’s Amazon contract are not yet fully known, but sources said it is for eight figures a year.  The 77-year-old Michaels was a free agent after he called his record tying 11th Super Bowl on TV for NBC last month. Michaels will still do a game or two for NBC, including its extra NFL playoff game, according to sources. NBC decided to replace Michaels with Mike Tirico as its “Sunday Night Football” play-by-player beginning next season.

Kid Rock Dares You To Cancel Him

Kid Rock discussed his recent album “Bad Reputation,” and revealed why he hasn’t been canceled Monday on “Tucker Carlson Tonight.”  “So if there was a message behind the album, what would it be?,” Tucker Carlson asked.  Kid Rock responded, “To my fans, I love you dearly. To [the] critics, haters and trolls – go f— yourself.”  “I love the trolls and the haters and the critics who’ve been trying to, you know, knock me down for 20, 30 years. And I just, I’m still standing, [and] still operate at the highest levels.”  Kid Rock, whose real name is Robert James Ritchie, has come under fire by critics for things he has said, and beliefs he holds.  “So why haven’t you been canceled?,” Carlson asked.  “I’m uncancelable,” Kid Rock said. “Because I don’t give a f—.”  “I’m not in bed with any big corporate things. At the end of the day, there’s nobody I’m beholden to. No record companies, no corporate interests, no nothing. And you can’t cancel me. I love it when they try.”

Beavers Return

Beavers haven’t roamed the streams and woods of London since the days of William Shakespeare. But after over 400 years of extinction, the rodents are being reintroduced to the United Kingdom capital in a “quite emotional” moment.  A pair of beavers, temporarily named Justin Beaver and Sigourney Beaver, were released into a designed enclosure on Forty Hall Farm in Enfield on March 17. The beavers are part of a two-year plan by Enfield Council to combat the increase in major flash floods that have plagued the city in recent years.  In February, Bob Ward, deputy chair of the London Climate Change Partnership, said the flood risks have turned life-threatening due to the city’s outdated drainage system.  “There is now a real risk of people drowning, particularly in basement flats if a major flash flood occurred in the middle of the night,” he told the Observer. “The problem is particularly worrying because we have no idea how many people live in basement properties in London.”  The hope for the introduction of the beavers is that the natural engineers will build dams and restore habitats that help slow down and filter water in the city’s wetlands. By cutting down trees and attracting other forms of wildlife, officials hope the restoration efforts lead to reduced downstream flooding.

Pong Prototype Auctioned

An original prototype for Atari’s Home Pong video game system was auctioned for more than $270,000 and came from the collection of the landmark game’s creator.  RR Auction, based in Boston, said the Home Pong prototype, which featured a finished Pong chip in a prototype circuit board in the base and a hand-carved wooden mockup of the Pong system on top, sold for $270,910.  The design was in the Sears Tele-Games version of Pong in 1975 and Atari Pong Model C-100 in 1976.  The prototype came from the collection of Allan Alcorn, who created Pong, one of the first video arcade games, in the 1970s. The auction included a letter of provenance signed by Alcorn.  “In 1975, Atari had managed to become dominant in the coin-operated entertainment business and moved on to build video games for the home market. We had to get Pong running on a single chip of silicon so a product could be built at a price a consumer could afford,” Alcorn wrote.

Mammoth Tooth Found At Construction Site

Construction work on a property owned by an Iowa college resulted in an unusual discovery — a tooth from a woolly mammoth believed to have lived more than 20,000 years ago.  Justin Blauwet of DGR Engineering said he was observing work on a lift station project for the city of Sheldon on a property owned by Northwest Iowa Community College when he spotted a massive tooth exposed by excavation.  Blauwet, who has long been interested in fossils, suspected the object was a woolly mammoth tooth, and his identification was confirmed by Tiffany Adrain, a paleontology repository instructor at the University of Iowa. “While discovery of mammoth remains is not uncommon in Iowa, once the bones and teeth are out in the open, they can fall apart and disappear quickly because they are not completely fossilized,” Adrian said in a DGR Engineering news release. “This was a lucky find.”  Adrian said the tooth has likely been underground since the last glacial maximum, which is believed to have happened over 20,000 years ago.
*****The big news: there was a Mammoth Dental Office on this site 20,000 years ago!!

Teeth Found In Restaurant

A British restaurant is trying to find the owner of an unusual piece of lost and found property: a full set of teeth.  The Barclay Pizza & Prosecco, located in Royton, Oldham, England, said workers were cleaning in the early morning hours Sunday when they found a full set of dentures on the floor in the bar area of the eatery.  Emma Whelan, owner of the establishment, posted a photo to the business’ Facebook page showing a bag that employees labeled “Teeth – Saturday 19 March 2022.”  “We get a lot of things left behind after a night in the Barclay.. we’ve had house keys, phones, even a single shoe (she must have hopped home) but this is a new one,” the post said.  Whelan said the teeth were found at the end of a particularly busy night.

5 Mindless Habits That Are Making You More Irritable

HUFFINGTON POST

Not eating when you’re hungry

Hanger is a real thing. When blood sugar is low, it triggers a cascade of hormones including cortisol, which is associated with stress.

Heather Kent, an author, psychotherapist and trauma recovery specialist in Canada, said that shortage of energy makes us feel “irritable, tired, sluggish and annoyed. … We have less tolerance for things.” She added that it may impact your ability to concentrate and ultimately perform, which can add to the frustration.  Try setting an alarm for every few hours to check in with yourself on your hunger level, or scheduling meal breaks into your day like meetings.

Binge-watching emotionally-taxing TV at night

Right when you are supposed to be calming your mind and body for bedtime, you turn on your favorite bingeworthy crime series. While these shows are not bothersome for some of us, for others they can cause an irritated and even depressed mood, long after we finish an episode. This can be especially problematic at night, causing disrupted sleep.  “Staying up and being distracted by TV causes us to stay up later, and then we’re like, ‘Oh, crap, I have to get up in five hours,’” Kent said. “That happens way more frequently than I’d like to see. … If we are sleeping poorly, the next day you are feeling irritable.”

To solve this, intentionally choose more calming or neutral topics for shows in the evening, and save the high-emotion options for a rainy Saturday to preserve your sleep ― and your mood.

Staying inside all day

It can be easy to let the daylight hours go by ― especially when you’re working. If you are getting to the end of the day, or multiple days, and haven’t even stepped foot outside, this mindless habit might be causing irritation.

Zinn suggested a research-backed tool to improve your morning routine and reduce irritation levels: Within 30 minutes of waking up, go outside for a walk, getting direct exposure to natural light.  Additionally, she suggested pushing your morning cup of coffee back a few hours rather than drinking it first thing. Since caffeine is a stimulant, you might be causing jitters or stress right off the bat instead of allowing yourself some calm. Instead, get out of bed, get some vitamin D, get your day started, then get your coffee.

Checking your phone notifications when they come through

Zinn said people check their phones close to 50 times per day on average, adding that it can take a person around 20 minutes to fully regain focus on a task after looking at their device.

This can lead to time management problems and feeling overwhelmed, which then leads to overall irritability, said Timothy Jeider, a psychiatrist at Nevada Mental Health.  “After we have gone down the rabbit hole, we kick ourselves for getting distracted and wasting time, which frustrates us, undermines our focus and productivity, so we seek out a distraction from frustration, and the cycle of mini-frustrations repeats, building on the last,” he said.

The easiest solution ― and also the toughest ― is to move your phone to another room, Zinn said. You can also put your phone on “do not disturb” mode or remove your notifications from your lock screen.

Doomscrolling

Doomscrolling is inevitable with social media at this point. All the misinformation, conspiracy theories and pandemic-related warnings in the news can take a huge toll on our mental well-being, Kent said.

“All of it leads to increased feelings of irritability, aggression and anger, and we tend to be really addicted to that news cycle because of the pandemic,” she said.

Emotionally draining news might not come just from your phone, but also from the television or radio running in the background. Even Instagram stories or TikTok can bombard us with it.  To break the negative effects, limit news consumption to once or twice per day. The best approach, according to Kent, is to try to consume news in the morning and evening rather than throughout the day.
