Bobby Brown Jr. Death Investigation Launched

Los Angeles authorities have launched a criminal investigation into the death of Bobby Brown Jr.  According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s report the 28-year-old son of singer Bobby Brown Sr.’s death was due to the “combined effects of alcohol, cocaine and fentanyl.”  Brown Jr. was found dead in his Los Angeles home on Nov. 18. His death was ruled “accidental.”  TMZ reports that law enforcement began looking at the case as a criminal one from the get-go after it was determined narcotics were involved. The outlet reports that officers quickly caught wind of the drugs after talking to people close to Brown Jr. before his body was found.  The case is reportedly now in the hands of the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office, which will determine if criminal charges can be filed against anyone related to the drugs or if things will be kicked back to the police department in order for them to conduct a further investigation.

Jeopardy Fans Lash Out At Dr. Oz

Jeopardy!” viewers are calling for a boycott of the show for the two-week stretch in which Dr. Mehmet Oz will be acting as the popular game show’s guest host.   He has faced controversy in the past for allegedly dispensing questionable medical advice. As a result, many viewers were upset to see him take up hosting duties on the popular trivia show. In an open letter published to Medium following the announcement, a group of former “Jeopardy!” winners and contestants urged the show to rethink its decision to have Oz host.  When he began his two-week run anyway on Monday, many viewers took to Twitter to voice their outrage, prompting the hashtag “#BoycottJeopardy” to begin trending Monday.   “@Jeopardy Absolutely will not be watching for the next 2 weeks. Why would you pick someone like Dr. Oz?! #BoycottJeopardy,” one upset fan wrote.  “Have to add my voice to the crowd #BoycottJeopardy while Dr Oz is on. What a disrespectful gesture towards Alex Trebec and the show,” another user wrote.  “Dr. Oz is a schizer, a schill and a dangerous snake oil salesman. The biggest slap to the face of Alex Trebek’s memory  that I could imagine. I love Jeopardy but, this week? I’ll #BoycottJeopardy,” a third user wrote.  Despite many people deriding the choice to have Oz stand in for Trebek, the guest host opened his first episode with a heartfelt story about the late “Jeopardy!” host.

Gwyneth Paltrow Opens Up About Divorce

Gwyneth Paltrow is opening up about her divorce from Chris Martin.  Appearing on the “Anna Faris is Unqualified” podcast on Monday, she reflected on her split from Martin.  “I never wanted to get divorced,” Paltrow admitted on the podcast. “I never wanted to not be married to the father of my kids, theoretically. But I have learned more about myself through that process than I could have imagined.”  “And because I focused on accountability, I was then able to find the most amazing man and build something that I’ve never had before with Brad [Falchuk], my husband,” she continued.  Paltrow also spoke about her relationship with Falchuk.  “We were friends first for a long time and once I was like, ‘Are we going to date? Is this happening?'” the actress revealed. “I was scared because he is a person who demands presence and intimacy and communication in a way that I just didn’t know how to [do].”  “I like to fight by shutting down… I leave the room,” she continued. “And he’s like, ‘No,’ he’s like, ‘Absolutely not. We are sitting down and we are figuring this out.’ And he demands that I am honest with myself in a way that is hard for me but which really helps me grow.”

Kris Jenner Starts New Beauty Brand

It was always a priority … About four or five years ago, I decided to formulate a skincare line … I had some samples done up.”  Jenner continued, “So I do have a skincare line that I love that’s ready to go … When the time is right, a year from now, maybe two — I just think it’s really important for older women to realize that if they just take care of their skin, it’s not complicated.”

CEO Sells First Tweet

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has sold the first-ever tweet that he published in 2006 as a non-fungible token or NFT, for over $2.9 million.  An NFT is a digital asset that can include jpegs, video clips or tweets that run on blockchain, a digital ledger that verifies authenticity.  Dorsey sold a digitally autographed version of the the tweet, which he sent on March 21, 2006, and reads “just setting up my twttr.”  The sale was accomplished through digital platform Valuables, which platform allows tweets autographed by their creators to be bought and sold. Bridge Oracle CEO Sina Estavi bought the tweet after getting into a bidding war with tech entrepreneur Justin Sun.  “This is not just a tweet! I think years later people will realize the true value of this tweet, like the Mona Lisa painting,” Estavi said on Twitter.

Cougars Invade Doorstep

A Utah man captured home surveillance footage of four cougars near his basement door.  Rich Penman, of Millcreek, uploaded the video from his Ring camera to the KUTV website, the station reported Saturday. The video clearly shows the large cats wandering past the door. One appears to peek through a window.  Cougar sightings have become more common in the area, but the animals are reclusive and solitary. It is rare to see more than one at a time.  The dark rings noticeable on the cougars’ tails suggest they may be juveniles.  Home surveillance cameras have captured other encounters with wild animals.  Last year, a resident of a Chicago suburb captured a video of a large cat in her fenced-in backyard. A local expert said the animal could be a cougar, though the image wasn’t clear.  See the video HERE.

A foul ball shot into a fan’s beer during spring training at Diablo Stadium in Tempe, Ariz., showering the section with beer.  Oakland Athletics catcher Sean Murphy drilled a foul ball into the stands, where it smashed a fan’s beer, sending a spray of liquid over the section.  The Los Angeles Angels posted a replay on Twitter. The fan received more beer and a bat autographed by center fielder Mike Trout.  Photographer Mark Rebilas captured images at the moment of impact and the resulting spray.  “Felt bad for his 12 dollar loss until #angels delivered more beer and @MikeTrout signed bat!” Rebilas posted on Twitter.  See the video HERE.

Odd Church Arrest

A former Louisiana priest and two dominatrices were slapped with vandalism charges for having sex atop a church altar in September of last year.  Travis Clark and the two women were initially charged by police with obscenity following the alleged tryst last September inside Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Pearl River.  But the St. Tammany Parish District Attorney’s Office on Friday announced lesser charges for the unholy trinity, who were busted after a passerby saw them through a church window and reported them to police, according to court records obtained by the news publication.  The two dominatrices — Mindy Dixon, 41, and 28-year-old Melissa Cheng — were wearing corsets and high heels during the threesome, which was being recorded, according to the court documents.  Sex toys and stage lights were recovered at the scene by police, along with recording devices.  The women told cops at the time that they were at the church to film “roleplay” with the priest. Cops determined everything that went on that night was consensual, but initially arrested the trio on the obscenity charges because they were in view of the public.

The Rudest Things You Can Do During A Work Zoom Meeting

Huffington Post

Not Using The Mute Button

“The number one Zoom etiquette complaint we hear: People who don’t mute themselves when they’re not talking,” said Nick Leighton, an etiquette expert and co-host of the “Were you raised by wolves?” podcast. “This is the equivalent of making distracting noises during an in-person meeting, which we hopefully all agree would be rude, so please don’t do it on Zoom, either.”

If you’ve been using video conferencing over the past year, you should be familiar with the mute button. When you aren’t speaking, make use of it to reduce background sounds, particularly if you’re in a noisy environment.

“Distractions such as barking dogs, buzzing kitchen blenders, flushing toilets and people talking in the background all make for unwelcome distractions,” said Diane Gottsman, a national etiquette expert, author of “Modern Etiquette for a Better Life” and founder of the Protocol School of Texas. “Know where the mute button is so you aren’t scrambling for it at the last minute.”

Talking about your colleagues in the chat is both rude and potentially detrimental to your career. Leighton said he believes it happens more often than he’d hope, based on questions he’s received on the topic.

One listener shared the following: “I just conducted a virtual training session at work using a new videoconference system. During the session, a chat box popped up on everyone’s screen where one of my colleagues was gossiping about a presenter while they were presenting.”

They added: “Their first few words of the chat read, ‘Not to be rude, but she …’ and it was visible for about three seconds to everyone. It was a rude comment about this presenter’s speech pattern, and three of the 20 attendees brought it up on their evaluation forms, and one even called me to complain directly. For the future, I have a plan to keep this from happening again, but I’m just not sure about how or if to address this widely, or if I should just leave it alone.”

It’s important to be mindful of the platform where you say certain things, but as Leighton noted, this situation can be clearly avoided by simply refraining from gossiping about colleagues or presenters.

“In general, if you wouldn’t do it in an in-person meeting, you probably shouldn’t do it on Zoom,” Leighton said.

Showing Up Late

This includes showing up late. In a Zoom context, being on time means having your camera, connection and microphone all set when you join.

“Your punctuality will be appreciated, and it demonstrates your professionalism and your respect towards everyone else,” Rossi said. “Ideally, be ready a few minutes before the scheduled time so that you can check your internet connection and settings. This gives you some technical peace of mind.”

Talking Over Others

“Give other people a chance to talk,” said Gottsman.

Monopolizing the conversation and talking over others is obnoxious in social settings, but it’s actually counterproductive in work meetings. Zoom meetings can be difficult enough to navigate as it is, so do your best to keep things running smoothly.

“Make use of the ‘raise hand’ function,” Rossi advised. “This way you avoid that people are talking over each other, which might be highly likely the bigger the group is.”

Appearing Too Casual

“Pay attention to your appearance,” Rossi said. “Conducting meetings via Zoom doesn’t mean you should neglect your appearance. Give it the same level of importance as you would in a normal business setting. Thus, dress well, be well-groomed as usual and be in a positive mood.”

We may be spending a lot more time in our PJs, but it’s still important to dress professionally for Zoom meetings (at least from the waist up).

“We know when we are too casual or when we ‘really don’t care’ about our appearance, it matters,” said life etiquette expert Juliet Mitchell, aka Ms. J. “You need to be ready for a meeting at any time. Just like we are expected to be ‘ready’ in the in-person world, we need to be ready in the virtual world.”

Eating On Camera

“It’s best not to eat on camera if it’s avoidable,” Leighton said. “However, there are some companies that purposefully schedule Zoom meetings over the lunch hour. And often these are the same companies that have a philosophy of ‘if your camera isn’t on, are you even here?’”

If you’re meeting during lunchtime, try to avoid needlessly messy or overly distracting foods, said Leighton.

“This isn’t the time for Renaissance fair turkey drumsticks, cotton candy, corn on the cob, or cheese fondue,” he said.

Dragging It Out

It’s important to be respectful of people’s time during the workday and try to be efficient.

“Just like when the conversation is over, when the meeting is over, say goodbye and leave the meeting,” said Mitchell. “Unless you and the other parties decide to chat informally for a few moments, be prepared to end the meeting, allowing you and others to move on to other tasks, appointments, etc. If the meeting is over an hour and a half, people need a break.”

If you’re the host of the meeting, however, it’s best to wait until everyone else has left the call before hanging up.

“Let every participant leave at their own pace and see if there are any attendees who might want to exchange some final words,” Rossi said.

Having An Inappropriate Background

“There’s a wide range of what’s considered ‘appropriate’ depending on your personality, your company, and your industry,” Leighton noted. “Just be mindful of this, whatever background you choose.”

Try to pick a presentable spot in your home for meetings, unless you’re using a fully virtual background. Avoid visibly messy rooms or inappropriate posters or objects in the background.

“Because of COVID-19, we are more gracious and accommodating of children, pets, and spouses in the house, but as much as possible, create space to be fully present and keep interruptions to a minimum,” Mitchell said.

Not Engaging

“Turn on your camera,” Gottsman advised. “Some people want to opt out or feel nervous so they don’t join in person. It immediately forms a barrier. Make it a point to use the chat option or ask a question. Engage in some form.”

Make sure your camera is stable and positioned at eye level so that you can be present during the meeting.

“This way you create a better way of engagement with everyone involved,” Rossi said, adding that the meeting host should also give everyone the opportunity to introduce themselves if needed.

“Be focused and don’t multitask,” she advised. “Do all your other tasks once the meeting is finished.”
