The Queen Attends Service For Prince Philip

Queen Elizabeth II and members of the royal family celebrated the life of the late Prince Philip on Tuesday during a Service of Thanksgiving at Westminster Abbey — almost a year after the Duke of Edinburgh died at the age of 99.  The queen, who’s battled COVID-19 and other health issues in the past, used a walking stick to enter Westminster Abbey on the arm of her son Prince Andrew at Tuesday’s event.  Prince Charles and Prince William — the heir and second in line to the British throne — both attended Tuesday’s celebration with the queen’s other children Prince Edward and Princess AnnePrince Harry, the queen’s grandson, and his wife Meghan Markle did not attend Tuesday’s ceremony honoring Prince Philip and opted to stay at their home in Los Angeles. Prince Harry has previously expressed concern about security for he and his children if they returned home to Britain.  Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip had been married for 73 years before he died. He was the longest-serving consort of a reigning British monarch.

Taylor Swift To Receive Honorary Degree

Taylor Swift will receive an honorary degree from New York University in May.  NYU announced Monday that Swift will receive a Doctor of Fine Arts, honoris causa, at this year’s commencement ceremony May 18 at Yankee Stadium in New York.  Swift will also address the Class of 2022 during a speech at the event. The commencement ceremony will be the first to be held in person since the COVID-19 pandemic.  “I cannot overstate how thrilled I am to be coming together with graduates, parents, faculty and honorees for NYU’s Commencement. Since 2019, we have been deprived of Commencement’s festive, communal joy, and its absence has been keenly felt,” NYU president Andrew Hamilton said.

Alec Baldwin Is On Chris Rock’s Side

Alec Baldwin is siding with Chris Rock after the comedian was slapped by Will Smith at Sunday’s Oscars ceremony.  Baldwin took to social media early Tuesday with a message for Rock.  “I am not reading much about how, or even if, the producers attended to Chris. But I love you, @chrisrock,” Baldwin posted.  “And I’m sorry the Oscars turned into the Jerry Springer show,” his tweet continues.  Baldwin’s post comes as he is overseas in Rome filming a new project. On Monday, he was photographed video chatting with his kids.  Baldwin is not the first celebrity to weigh in on the slap scandal. In a video director Michael Bay was asked during a beach outing about the viral moment, which he said he hadn’t been watching live and “really didn’t see it all go down.”  Bay said that he isn’t sure whether Smith should have been escorted out of the Dolby Theatre for the incident. The director doesn’t “know the rules, but it was a little unlike Will. He’s a very steady guy.”

Jada Pinkett Smith Posts Message About Oscars

Jada Pinkett Smith is speaking out two days after husband Will Smith struck Chris Rock onstage at the 94th annual Academy Awards on Sunday.  She posted a message on her Instagram that read, “This is a season for healing and I’m here for it.”  Jada’s statement comes after Will issued an apology of his own on Monday, writing, “Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.”  “I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris,” the King Richard actor continued. “I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”  “I would also like to apologize to the Academy, the producers of the show, all the attendees and everyone watching around the world. I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us,” Smith concluded. Britney Spears Goes After Justin Timberlake

Britney Spears appears to have had a change of heart about her feelings toward ex-boyfriend Justin Timberlake.  Despite previously posting videos of herself dancing to his songs in the background of her Instagram videos, she is now blasting Timberlake for “using” her name to sell records of his debut album, “Justified,” back in 2002.  She wrote in a since-deleted post shared to Instagram this week that Jesus spoke to her about those who betrayed her.  “Your mom had a serving with her book at the exact time when you needed her most …all for WHAT ??? FAME and ATTENTION!!!!,” she claims the Lord said of Lynne Spears.  Britney’s mom released “Through the Storm: A Real Story of Fame and Family in a Tabloid World” in 2008, which covered much of her daughter’s public struggles with paparazzi and mental health.  She then added of Timberlake, “Your ex did the same thing … he served with his first album using your name claiming you did him dirty!!!!”  They dated from 1999 until cheating allegations on Britney’s behalf surfaced in 2002.  Timberlake confirmed those rumors by releasing his hit heartbreak track, “Cry Me a River,” that same year, and hiring a Britney look-alike as the model for the video.

Metal Detector Saves Proposal

A stranger with a metal detector came to the rescue of a British couple who lost their ring just moments after becoming engaged on a beach.  Joe McGrath proposed to his girlfriend, Becky on a beach near where she grew up in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire, England, but when they were preparing to leave the beach a short time later they discovered the ring had fallen into the sand.  “At first I thought it was going to be one of those things that we will laugh about and we will find it straight away but, five minutes in, I started to think ‘crikey this is scary now,'” McGrath told the BBC.  McGrath said he found a metal detector for sale nearby on Facebook Marketplace, but the $26 purchase turned out not to be of much help.  “It just didn’t work at all. I don’t know what it was finding but it certainly wasn’t finding metal,” he said.  McGrath turned to a local metal detecting group on Facebook for help, and his plea was answered by Marc Robinson.  Robinson, using his functioning metal detector, was able to find the ring in a matter of minutes.

Bear Trapped In Porch

A New Hampshire woman said her family was faced with an unusual problem when a black bear ended up trapped on their enclosed porch.  Melissa Champney of Grafton said she and her husband awoke late Saturday night to a loud sound that appeared to be coming from inside their home.   “I looked out the dining room window and there was a really big bear stuck on the porch – eating the porch, as a matter of fact,” Champney told WMUR-TV.  Champney said the door to the mud porch is sometimes left ajar so the couple’s cats can come and go as they please, but the bear had apparently shut the door behind it when it came in.  Champney posted photos to Facebook showing the damage wrought by the “worst house guest ever.”  “He pretty much trashed the entire porch,” she said.  See the video HERE.

Herd Of Deer Rush Into A Pub

A Wisconsin bar shared video of the moment a herd of deer overran the establishment’s patio area — and one of the animals crashed into the pub through a window.  Dublin’s Irish Pub in Oshkosh posted photos to Facebook showing the mess of broken glass left behind by “an unexpected guest that decided to use our window as the entrance.”  The bar later posted an “update” after a review of security camera footage showed the deer hadn’t acted alone.  The video shows an entire herd of deer vaulting over a short wall and overrunning the pub’s patio seating area when one of the animals leaps right through the window, shattering it.  The pub said the deer dispersed within seconds of arriving at the business.  See the photos HERE.

Woman Keeps Getting Unwanted Shoes

An Illinois woman said more than 15 pairs of “really, really, really tacky” shoes have been mistakenly delivered to her home over the course of a year.  Simone Boutet of Oak Park said the shoes started being delivered to her home by UPS about a year ago, and between 15 and 20 pairs have since arrived.  They’re really funny,” Boutet told WLS-TV of the shoes. “And they’re really, really, really tacky.”  Boutet said she returned one box of shoes to a UPS store.  “I explained the whole thing to her and she understood it. And so she took them back and then like four days later they came back in the mail to me,” she said.  Boutet said in a Facebook post that she determined after a January delivery that the shoes were apparently supposed to have been returned to Amazon.  UPS officials said the shoes are supposed to be returned to an Amazon vendor out of China, and the vendor’s return label bears the words “Simone” and an address on Elm Street in Chicago. The address is not a return center, so a UPS attempt to correct the address error led to them being sent to “Simone” in Oak Park.  UPS said “a clerical error” was to blame for the shoes arriving at Boutet’s home. The company said it would work with the vendor to get the return labels corrected.
*********It’s really strange, but Amazon doesn’t really WANT the returns!! They’d rather you keep them!!

How To Make A Tank Of Gas Last Longer

HUFFINGTON POST

Watch your speed.

“Try to follow the speed limit, and you’ll save a lot on fuel,” said Gerdes, coiner of the term “hypermiling.” Driving 5 or 10 miles over the speed limit might get you to your destination a little faster, but you’ll wind up wasting that saved time and pay more money by having to go to the pump to refuel sooner.”  He recommended getting out of the mindset that you need to race to where you’re going or simply giving yourself more time to drive to avoid the temptation to speed.

“Fuel economy peaks at around 50 mph on most cars, then drops off as speeds increase,” noted Ellen Edmonds, public relations manager at AAA. “Reducing highway speeds by 5-10 mph can increase fuel economy by as much as 14%.”  Make use of cruise control when you’re driving on the highway to keep your speed consistent as well.

Don’t drive when you don’t need to.

“As far as saving fuel, the motto to live by is ‘don’t drive when you don’t have to and drive smart when you do,’” said Wayne Gerdes, founder of CleanMPG.com. “Only about half our miles are actually going back and forth to work. The other half are optional.”  In addition to combining errands to cut down on car trips, he suggested walking or taking public transit more often if you live in a place where that’s an option.

“The best way to cut gas spending is to drive less, which you can easily accomplish by setting up carpools to and from work and school or sports practice with other parents,” Woroch added. “You can even find ride shares using sites like ridesharing.com.”

Plan ahead.

A little advance planning can go a long way when it comes to gas usage.

“Map your route before you go to minimize unnecessary turnarounds and backtracking,” Edmonds said. “Avoid peak traffic times. Combine errands and go to ‘one-stop shops’ where you can do multiple tasks like banking, shopping, etc.”

Avoid excessive idling.

It’s tempting to keep your car on when you aren’t moving, especially in winter. But Edmonds advises against doing this when you aren’t in motion.

“A car engine consumes one quarter to one half gallon of fuel per hour when idling, but a warm engine only takes around 10 seconds’ worth of fuel to restart,” Edmonds said. “Where safe to do so, shut off your engine if you will be stopped for more than a minute.”

Steer clear of traffic when possible.

Edmonds advised taking advantage of flexible work hours to avoid commuting during rush hour. Even if you can’t control your commute times, look for other ways to stay out of peak traffic.

“Use ‘fast pass’ or ‘express’ toll lanes,” she suggested. “Avoiding unnecessary stops or slowdowns on the highway helps save fuel.”

“Make sure your tires are properly inflated, which provides maximum fuel efficiency so you don’t waste any gas,” Woroch said.  Keeping your car in shape with properly inflated tires and routine inspections is especially important to avoid higher costs later on.

Pay attention to acceleration and deceleration.

“Be mindful of how you accelerate and take it easy on the gas pedal,” Woroch advised. “Accelerating too fast too often will guzzle your gas.”

Gerdes noted that driving smoothly and going easy on the acceleration and deceleration is better for your tires as well.  “When you accelerate and brake hard, that works through your tires, but if you’re gentle with your car, your tires are going to last much longer and you can get a better mileage rating,” he said.

Pay attention to traffic ahead and try to maintain momentum as you approach stoplights to avoid unnecessary stopping and going.  “You want to keep your vehicle rolling,” Gerdes said. “When you see a stoplight, let your car gradually slow down. Don’t feel like you need to race to the stoplight and then brake right there. There’s no prize money for getting there first.”

Use recirculation in warm weather.

As temperatures start to rise again, it’s worth paying attention to your A/C usage to maximize fuel efficiency.  “Cars typically are more fuel efficient when the air conditioner is set to re-circulate interior air,” The Wall Street Journal noted. “This is because keeping the same air cool takes less energy than continuously cooling hot air from outside. Of course, turning off the air conditioner saves even more fuel.”

So if you’re driving in warmer weather and using the A/C, consider pressing that air-recirculation button.

Stop getting premium gas.

If you can fill your car with either premium or regular gas, Edmonds recommends going with regular.

“If regular gas is recommended for your vehicle, that’s all you need,” she said. “Opting for premium when your car doesn’t require it will only cost you money and doesn’t improve fuel economy.”

Shop around to save on gas.

“Gas prices fluctuate daily, but you can track down the cheapest price per gallon in your area using apps like GasBuddy, which is especially helpful if you’re driving in an unfamiliar area or on a road trip,” Woroch said. “If you have a membership to a warehouse club like Costco, fuel up at their gas stations for the lowest price per gallon, but go early morning or late at night to avoid long lines.”  The AAA mobile app and website also include a gas price finder to help users locate the cheapest option in their area. Woroch also recommended paying for gas with cash, as many stations charge transaction fees for credit cards. Or if you must use a card, consider investing in a gas rebate credit card to maximize cash back on fuel purchases.

Additionally, she suggested purchasing groceries strategically by going to stores that offer gas saving programs with rewards at the pump.  “For example, Kroger store loyalty programs offer 1 Fuel Point for every $1 you spend on groceries, which can be redeemed for savings at Kroger gas stations or Shell stations,” she explained. “Shop & Stop offers similar savings through their GO Rewards program, which gives you 1 point for every $1 spent, which you can redeem for up to $1.50 off a gallon at the store brand’s gas stations and participating Shell gas stations.”
