Conan O’Brien Announces End Date

Conan O’Brien has announced that the final episode of his TBS late night show Conan, will air on June 24^th.  He made the announcement Monday to open Conan. He said that over the next two months, Conan will feature special guests and look back at the past 11 years of the show.  WarnerMedia confirmed in November that Conan would be ending in 2021 and that O’Brien will be going on to host a new, weekly variety series on HBO Max.  O’Brien previously hosted Late Night with Conan O’Brien and The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien on NBC before he moved to TBS with Conan in 2010.  “I just want to point that for 11 years the people at Turner have been absolutely lovely to me and everyone here at the staff. They gave me a home when I needed one most and I am eternally grateful. I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished here,” O’Brien said.

Adam Sandler Responds To IHop Video

Adam Sandler finally responded to the viral video that captured the moment he was turned away from a Long Island IHOP.   He was praised online for his positive attitude after he and his daughter were told by a teenage employee at the restaurant that there would be a lengthy wait to be seated, prompting the star to politely exit the restaurant. The teen shared a video of the brief encounter on TikTok and noted how embarrassed she was to have not recognized the famous comedian and movie star at the time.  Sandler was quiet about the viral video until Monday when he took to Twitter to make a brief self-deprecating joke about the incident and his diet.   “For the record, I only left the IHOP because the nice woman told me the all-you-can-eat deal didn’t apply to the milkshakes,” he joked.   Dayanna Rodas was the “nice woman” who posted security footage from the IHOP chain she works at to TikTok along with a video of herself looking like a clown. The clown filter was there to highlight her embarrassment for not recognizing Sandler, who was wearing baggy shorts, a hoodie and a face mask to protect from the coronavirus at the time.  Although Sandler clearly looks disappointed in the video, many took to the comments section of the now-viral TikTok to praise the actor for not giving the staff member a hard time or flexing his celebrity status in order to get preferential treatment.   Instead, the video shows Sandler simply leaving the restaurant, presumably to find another place to grab a meal with his kid.

Meghan Markle has written her first children’s book in honor of her husband Prince Harry and their son Archie.  “Duchess Meghan has written her first children’s book, The Bench, about the special bond between father and son-as seen through a mother’s eyes,” Omid Scobie, royal editor of Harper’s Bazaar and “Finding Freedom” author tweeted on Tuesday.  “It’s out June 8 and is inspired by Prince Harry and Archie’s close relationship,” he shared. “The book is illustrated by Christian Robinson.”  Scobie also noted that she will narrate the audiobook.  “‘The Bench’ started as a poem I wrote for my husband on Father’s Day, the month after Archie was born,” Meghan says in a statement, as quoted by Scobie. “That poem became this story. Christian layered in beautiful and ethereal watercolor illustrations that capture the warmth, joy, and comfort of the relationship between fathers and sons from all walks of life; this representation was particularly important to me, and Christian and I worked closely to depict this special bond through an inclusive lens.”  “My hope is that ‘The Bench’ resonates with every family, no matter the makeup, as much as it does with mine,” she added.

Ben Affleck Goes Viral From Dating App

A video of Ben Affleck allegedly pursuing a woman on a dating app has gone viral.  Tik Tok user Nivine Jay on Monday appeared to leak a video she received from Affleck, 48, on the celebrity dating app Raya.  Jay shared a video of herself reacting to the alleged video from Ben with the caption: “Thinking of the time I matched with Ben Affleck on Raya and thought it was fake so I unmatched him and he sent me a video on Instagram.”  While Affleck has yet to confirm or deny it’s really him in the video, his face appears on the screen and he says to the camera: “Nivine, why did you unmatch me? It’s me.”  Jay’s video has been viewed over 3.8 million times and liked nearly 500,000 times. In the video, she stares at the camera and shakes her head before Affleck’s alleged video message to her appears.

Marshmallow Record

A pair of Utah men broke a Guinness World Record when one launched a marshmallow from a slingshot and the other caught it in his mouth 225 feet, 10 inches away.  Dallas Anderson and Jon Paleka, the YouTubers behind the Thrive On Vibes channel, said experimenting with catching marshmallows with their mouths for an earlier video inspired them to seek the world record for distance.  A video posted by the men shows Anderson launching marshmallows from a slingshot while Paleka attempts to catch them.  The pair ended up with their successful attempt spanning a distance of 225 feet, 10 inches, capturing the Guinness record for farthest marshmallow propelled and caught in the mouth.  See the video HERE.

Baby Delivered On Delta Flight

A doctor and three nurses aboard a flight from Utah to Honolulu helped a fellow passenger deliver her baby in mid-flight.  Lavinia Mounga was aboard the Delta Airlines flight late last week when she unexpectedly went into labor after only 29 weeks of pregnancy.  Dr. Dale Glenn with Hawaii Pacific Health Family Medicine was on board the plane, as were North Kansas City Hospital NICU Nurses Lani Bamfield, Amanda Beeding and Mimi Ho.  The baby was born quickly, and the nurses, who specialize in caring for premature babies, went into action.  “I don’t know how a patient gets so lucky as to have three neonatal intensive care nurses onboard the same flight when she is in emergency labor, but that was the situation we were in,” Glenn said in a news release from Hawaii Pacific Health Family Medicine. “The great thing about this was the teamwork. Everybody jumped in together and everyone helped out.”

Galaxy Quest Plays During Subcommittee Meeting

A House Appropriations subcommittee hearing was delayed Monday when 22 minutes of audio from the movie Galaxy Quest played while members were speaking.  The House Appropriations subcommittee on energy and water meeting was held via Zoom and livestreamed online, where viewers noted the audio from 1999 sci-fi comedy Galaxy Quest — and, later, some disco music from The Village People — was playing in the background.  The members of the subcommittee were apparently unaware of the audio issue until a recess was called to address the problem.  Appropriations committee spokesman Evan Hollander said the audio issue was the result of a problem with the House Recording Studio feed, not a member loudly watching TV with their microphone on.  See the video HERE.

Guy Catches HUGE Sturgeon!

Conservation officials in Michigan shared a photo of a “once in a lifetime catch” — a lake sturgeon measuring 6 feet, 10 inches long.  The Alpena Fish and Wildlife Conservation Office said researchers on the Detroit River reeled in the 6-foot, 10-inch lake sturgeon last week and the fish weighed in at a staggering 240 pounds.  Biologists estimated the sturgeon, believed to be a female, is likely more than 100 years old and is one of the largest lake sturgeon on record in the United States.  “We knew it was big in the water, but when we saw it on the deck of the boat, we were all like, ‘yep, this is very large,'” Paige Wigren, a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologist who was on board the boat, told WWMT-TV.  Officials said the massive sturgeon was returned to the river.

5 Effects Of The Pandemic You’re Only Just Now Feeling At Work

1. You have no motivation left to do your job.

When you reach a breaking point, your mental health suffers, and this can show up as feeling generally overwhelmed at your job and thinking, “Ugh, when is this going to be over?” Horsham-Brathwaite said.

Consequently, feeling that you have too much to deal with during an indefinite pandemic can also lead to being bored and disengaged, she said.

This lack of motivation can lead to being easily distractible, unable to concentrate and feeling “checked out” at your job, said Yesel Yoon, a psychologist who specializes in career transitions and job uncertainty.

What could be causing this disengagement? By this stage of the pandemic, we may be acutely missing the wins that raises or bonuses gave us, or much-needed breaks in the day that commuting or socializing with co-workers gave us, Yoon said.

“We’re social creatures, we’re not robots. We want things to evolve and change, and want to adapt,” she said. “And not having that much in the work space, is what is leading to this malaise … that feeling of ‘Oh, I’m so over this.’”

 

2. You feel resentful when others act like it’s business as usual.

Resentment can fester when the reality between what you experience differs widely from what your bosses are saying. For many outside the C-suite, the status quo isn’t working. A Microsoft survey released in March found that 61% of business leaders say they’re “thriving” right now, while only 38% of workers without decision-making authority say the same. In fact, nearly 1 in 5 professionals in the survey said their employer doesn’t care about work-life balance, and most said they were overworked.

If people are being asked to do the same level of work without recognition that this is still a stressful time, they can feel resentment, Horsham-Brathwaite said. “What I’m hearing from people is that their employers have gone back to business as usual when it’s not business as usual.”

 

3. You feel anxiety about returning to the office.

The transition to remote work was disruptive at first, but now that employees have crafted new ways of working, there may be a hesitancy to return to the office, Jessica Methot, an associate professor in Rutgers University’s School of Management and Labor Relations, told HuffPost.

More companies are either planning a return to their office spaces or actively calling workers back to their buildings. This may bring excitement for some, but for others it can prompt a lot of uncertainty and anxiety about what the post-pandemic office will look like, and whether your boss’s version of a safe communal workplace aligns with your own.

Those who are not eager to return to the office may be feeling especially wary when receiving notices for reopening plans and phases, Yoon said. “I’ve definitely heard and felt the anxiety coming up from other people of ‘Oh my gosh, what is that going to look like? How are we even going to all interact?’”

 

4. You are seriously considering a job switch.

A majority of Americans surveyed by LinkedIn in March said they had put career moves on hold, citing the need to collect a steady paycheck during the pandemic and wanting to wait for a more favorable job market. For some people, the time to make a career change might be now as states announce reopening plans and vaccine availability is becoming less of an issue.

Yoon noted that professionals who initially made the choice to hunker down at their jobs may now be thinking, “‘Maybe I will go back to taking a look at my job application material and really get to work on this, because clearly this isn’t changing and I’m still unhappy,’” she said. ”I think delayed plans have reemerged back to the surface.”

Though restrictions remain in place in parts of the country, many Americans are eating at restaurants and traveling again as the U.S. economy reopens. As a result, professionals “get mixed messages,” Yoon said. “Things are still hard, but then they’re also seeing, ‘Well, the economy is moving a little bit, so there are actually jobs starting to open up’ … I think that has spurred people’s hope.”

 

5. You view your career totally differently now — especially if you lost your job as a result of the pandemic.

Losing a job was an unfortunately common event last year. One Gallup poll conducted in the second half of 2020 found that over a billion people worldwide lost their jobs or business due to COVID-19.

That may be impacting how you view your career now in unseen ways. When you are laid off or fired, you not only lose a steady source of income, but you can also lose purpose and a sense of security.

People who experience job loss may internalize a risk-adverse mindset as a defense mechanism and think, “You never know what’s going to happen, so you better be happy,” or “I’m lucky for what I get, even if I’m unhappy,” Yoon said.

“If you let those messages go unchecked for too long, it can start to pervade all senses,” Yoon said. “You don’t really ever try to take any risks, you don’t question anymore. … I can imagine [for] this cohort or generation of people who have gone through this, that’ll be a ripple effect going forward. It could potentially make an impact in how they think about change in their career.”

Even if you didn’t experience job loss, you may be feeling uncertain about the future, too. But either way, you shouldn’t let thoughts like “It’s too risky” stop you from considering the career or role you want.

Yoon suggests that if you’re experiencing this sort of risk-adverse mindset about your job, you should ask yourself what exactly is risky about it so that you can begin to figure out what you need to do to reduce the risk. That way, fear is not in the driver’s seat of your career.
