Katie Couric Opens Up About Matt Lauer

Katie Couric says she has “no relationship” with Matt Lauer in the wake of his sexual misconduct scandal.  She discussed Lauer, her former Today co-host, during an appearance on the show Tuesday.  Couric and Lauer co-hosted Today together for 15 years. Couric left the show in 2006, while Lauer was fired in November 2017 following allegations of “inappropriate sexual behavior” in the workplace.  On Today, Couric was asked where she stands with Lauer today.  “We have no relationship,” she said.  Couric called the accusations against Lauer “disturbing” and “disgusting.”  “As I got more information and learned what was going on behind the scenes, it was really upsetting and disturbing,” Couric said. “It was really devastating, but also disgusting.”  “I think what I realized is that there was a side of Matt I never really knew, and I tried to understand why he behaved the way he did, and why he was so reckless and callous, and honestly abusive to other women,” she added.

Celine Dion Delays Vegas Opening

Celine Dion is delaying the opening of her new Las Vegas show at Resorts World Theater due to an unforeseen medical issue.  According to the venue’s website, she is delaying the opening of her show and canceling planned performances scheduled for Nov. 5 and shows between Jan. 19 and Feb. 5 while she is evaluated by her medical team.  “Celine has been experiencing severe and persistent muscle spasms which are preventing her from performing. Her medical team continues to evaluate and treat her. However, the symptoms she is experiencing are prohibiting her from participating in the ongoing rehearsals for the new show,” the statement on the venue’s website reads.  Those who purchased a ticket to any of the dates that have been called off were told that they can expect an automatic refund.   “I’m heartbroken by this,” the artist said in a statement on her website. “My team and I have been working on our new show for the past eight months, and to not be able to open this November saddens me beyond words. My partners at Resorts World Las Vegas and AEG have been working around the clock to get this brand-new state-of-the-art theatre ready, and it’s absolutely beautiful. I feel so bad that I’m letting them down, and I’m especially sorry for disappointing all the fans who’ve been making their plans to come to Las Vegas. Now, I have to focus on getting better… I want to get through this as soon as I can.”

Kanye West Gets An Official Name Change

Kanye West is officially no more.  Ye is the new name after a judge in a Los Angeles Superior Court granted his petition for a name change, which was first filed on Aug. 24.  The name change was approved with no middle or last name.  “There being no objections, the petition for change of name is granted,” Judge Michelle Williams Court said in court documents.  Ye previously opened up in a 2018 interview about his reasoning for petitioning the name change, telling radio host Big Boy that he did it as a reference to the most commonly used word in the Bible.  Merriam-Webster’s etymological history delineation of the word sees it appear frequently in the religious scribe as a plural form of “you.” Merriam-Webster also notes that it more commonly appears as an archaic form of “the.”  Ye has been the music and fashion mogul’s Twitter handle for a while and he even released his eighth studio album titled “Ye” in June 2018.

Flavor Flav Arrested

Flavor Flav was arrested for domestic battery in Las Vegas earlier this month after he allegedly attacked a woman and threw her phone.  The Public Enemy rapper was booked on a misdemeanor charge of domestic battery on Oct. 5 by the Henderson Police Department, TMZ reported Tuesday.  The criminal complaint, obtained by the site, claims the rapper, born William Drayton Jr., poked the victim’s nose, grabbed her, threw her down and grabbed a phone out her hand.  The City Attorney said Flavor Flav is officially charged with misdemeanor battery constituting domestic violence.  “In alleged domestic violence cases, there are often two sides to the story, and we will explain our side in the courtroom and not in the media,” Flavor Flav’s attorney said in a statement.  He last had legal trouble in Sin City in 2015 when he was arrested on drug- and alcohol-related charges. He pleaded no contest to misdemeanor driving under the influence and was fined $685 and ordered to attend a victim impact panel and drunk driving school.

New Lucille Ball Trailer

The “Being the Ricardos” trailer, released by Amazon Studios Tuesday, gives loyal “I Love Lucy” lovers a glimpse at the less-than-lovey-dovey disharmony between Lucille Ball, who died at 77 in 1989, and Dezi Arnaz, who died at 69 in 1986, during a particularly tumultuous time in their 20-year marriage and television careers. Accompanied by the rhythmic beat of the conga drum, maracas and trumpet, the film’s fast-moving preview offers peeks of the backstage strife between Ball and Arnaz during a week in September 1952.  Javier Bardem, 52, plays Arnaz as Ricky Ricardo opposite Nicole Kidman in the upcoming movie — which is slated for limited release in theaters on Dec. 10 and will be available via Amazon Prime Video on Dec. 21.   See the trailer HERE.

Harrison Ford Back On Indy Set

Harrison Ford is back on the set of the fifth “Indiana Jones” film after suffering a severe injury in June, which paused production for several months.  Photos show him  in Indy’s iconic leather jacket and hat cavorting on set with co-stars Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Antonio Banderas in Castellammare del Golfo in Sicily, Italy.  He had been on hiatus after injuring his shoulder while shooting a fight scene back in June, Disney confirmed in a statement.  “It was not what anyone was expecting, so to have to change everything is a huge blow,” the film’s bosses said at the time. Due to the severity of the injury, they guessed production on “Indiana Jones” would resume in the fall.

Expensive Vase Bought At Thrift Store

A glass vase purchased for $4.99 at a thrift store in the Pacific Northwest is expected to sell for up to $15,000 after it was identified as a rare piece from 1902.  Heritage Auctions said the Oct. 28 Tiffany, Lalique & Art Glass: Including Art Nouveau & Art Deco auction will feature a rare Loetz Argus glass vase designed by Austrian Kolomon Moser, a participant in the Vienna Secession art movement.  “The Loetz Argus glass vase is one of the finest examples of this rare and important model to come to market. It does so following its unlikely discovery in a thrift store in the Pacific Northwest by a shopper with an exceptionally discerning eye,” Samantha Robinson, consignment director of Decorative Arts and Design for Heritage, told ARTFIXdaily.com.  The vase is expected to fetch between $10,000 and $15,000 when it goes up for auction.

Ancient Sword Found

The Israel Antiquities Authority said a diver off the country’s northern coast found a 900-year-old sword believed to have belonged to a knight during the Crusades.  The authority said Shlomi Katzin of Atlit was diving off Carmel Beach when he spotted a barnacle-encrusted sword on the seabed.  A video of Katzin’s dive shows his discovery of the sword, along with a barnacle-covered boat anchor.  Katzin took the sword to the northern district office of the antiquities authority’s Robbery Prevention Unit, which handed the artifact off to the National Treasures Department.  “The sword, which has been preserved in perfect condition, is a beautiful and rare find and evidently belonged to a Crusader knight,” Nir Distelfeld, inspector for the Israel Antiquities Authority’s Robbery Prevention Unit, told The Times of Israel.  Officials said the sword will be cleaned and studied by experts before going on display.  See the video HERE.

Giant Pumpkin Disqualified

A Wisconsin farmer grew a 2,520-pound pumpkin believed to be the heaviest grown in the country this year, but it was disqualified from competition due to a crack.  Mike Schmit of Markesan said he has been growing giant pumpkins for years, but this year marked the first time one of his gourds surpassed 2,500 pounds.  Schmit’s 2,520-pound pumpkin is believed to be the largest grown in the United States this year, but it was disqualified from competition due to a fingernail-sized crack in the vegetable’s exterior.  The grower said the crack is believed to be a result of internal pressure from the pumpkin’s large size and the awkward way it was growing.  The pumpkin could have earned Schmit a $22,680 prize from 2021 Safeway World Championship Pumpkin Weigh-Off in California, which offers a $9-per-pound prize to the winner.

Tennessee Man Illegally Shoots Doves

Wildlife officials in Tennessee confiscated 74 doves after a hunter was accused of using bait to lure the popular game birds. The Cumberland County man, who was not identified, pleaded guilty to charges of baiting on Oct. 7 and was ordered to pay $499.50 in fines and court costs, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency said in a news release over the weekend. He also lost his hunting privileges for a year, officials said.  Hunters typically shoot at the fast-flying birds as they approach a field to feed or a body or water to drink. Hunting can start up to a half hour before sunrise and continues until sunset, according to Wildlife Resources. Tennessee state law bars hunters from using bait to hunt wildlife “unless the bait has been removed and any electronic feeder disabled at least 10 days prior to hunting,” officials said. Baiting refers to deliberately placing food such as corn or wheat to attract birds. According to the state agency, an area is considered baited for 10 days because birds will return to the same spot for several days even after the food supply runs out.
